Old Lenses for New Cameras?
มุมมอง 771ปีที่แล้ว
The transition of full frame mirrorless cameras from SLR has reduced the number of lens options available to photographers, and given the tiny number of those using them underwater, there are some gaps in appropriate lenses for using with them. Alex and Adam discuss some of the older lenses, including Nikononos, and how some of these may work with the new cameras, while others currently will no...
Is the Sony a7RV the SLR Killer for Underwater Image Makers?
มุมมอง 3Kปีที่แล้ว
During his recent Grand Cayman workshops, Alex Mustard could borrow and extensively use a Sony a7R V mirrorless camera. The camera is now receiving favorable reviews in the "above water" photographic community, so this is a rare opportunity to get an early opinion specific to underwater use about an exciting new camera body. Joined by Adam, the duo had some technical issues with the recording; ...

What Makes An Underwater Image Iconic?
มุมมอง 1.2K2 ปีที่แล้ว
In a dive into some older posts on the Wetpixel forum, Alex and Adam discuss what makes an image iconic and truly memorable. They discuss the differences that can occur due to the viewer's context, and how the profusion of social media channels has affected how individuals view and react to images, and that the circumstances around an image's capture matter less than the image itself. kindly sp...

Why cant we do a manual white balance with the video lights turned on?
What’s a stop of sharpness?
Im using micro 4/3rds
Very helpful, thank you
Thanks for great content
Hi adam I'm having trouble with my camera focusing at depth when it's pretty dark and there isn't much ambient light available. Would a focus light be beneficial?
thank you very much !
Great video. I have a question for both of you. Dive, buddies, what would be your recommendation if shooting with Sony A7R5 for best results? Is there anything i can add to this system other than just shoot with a 90mm or 105 lens? Does anyone thats read this shoot with a Sony A7R Series camera. I have a few questions
hi i shoot with the sony a7r5 but for the moment just wide angle
@@joel33famara61 do you have IG.
My strobe choice is arrived at the opposite way. I spent 20 years shooting on Silver on my Motomarine and its little Yellow sub Strobe.,Everything was manual, mùanual focus, no aids, Manual aperture manual speed. The only automatic thing was TTL on the strobe. The first time I put my Motomarine in the water was in the Sudan. By mere chance, I was diving with Fred DeMiglio, the current underwater Photography world Champion (He won it 3 timpes) . He had a look over my kit, straight in focfus on the strobe, Wow that's going to be great for marcro, TTL you must use that, don't chase the fish, let them come to you, so close you could touch them. From my first weeks underwater photography, I actually won a competition, The first prize was a full paid holiday, i won the second prize, a T Shirt. Over 20 years with the same Kit, I learnt what I could take with that little Strobe NOT what I wished for. When the world went Electronic I started Gopro, I needed my light, ended up using up to 5 LEDs, great for video but could not match my little strobe in still photography. So I moved up to TG6 and tack on A Yellow Sub 3 strobe. It's the same as before, same battery compartment, probably the same power. results immediately are Brilliant. Effectively I adapted to what the Strobe can do not vice versa. But with Fibre optics twin strobe is eazy, so I have bought a second strobe. Forget Guide numbers, a second strobe doubles my power. Flying to the Maldives This Saturday to find out.
Always interesting stuff. For myself, I am looking for over under shots so any shows that you do focusing on dos and don'ts in that arena will be in my list of watch again videos
Thank you for these videos! There is so much valuable information for beginners like me. I received a used Seafrogs housing with an 8" dome port for my old Sony a7rii full frame camera yesterday. I tried it with a Viltrox 16mm f/1.8 at home at the pool and everything seems to all working quite well (as far as I can tell without any experience in underwater photography). Corners start to look good from f/11 and great from f/13. However, the lens has a minimum focus distance of 27 cm. I wonder I could run into problems in certain circumstances. Unfortunately, you did not quantify how close a lens would need to focus in order to be a great performer underwater. What tests would you recommend to find out whether a lens performs well with a certain dome port? Kind regards
This was super helpful!!! Loved this talk. Waiting for more of these ^_^ Especially ones focussed on using open source or free solutions.
Hi. Micro hydrophone, condensator, batery cell. The hydrophone could directly feed the batery trough condensator or direct electric flux. The environmental utrasounds or sounds could feed the scooter. My best regards.
Do you have any arm clamps you recommend?
Adam, you need to communicate and pay back the money you owe me and others. You have been reassuring me for months that you would get me my 5,000 dollars back from the Lembeh trip you rescheduled once your health allowed you to do so. I you are able to post new trips and collect money from people you can send me my money back. There is no excuse for this behavior. I warn others that there is a pattern of collecting money then no communication and sometimes not even a trip like this Red Sea one. To not talk about it and reveal what Adam is doing is hurting the industry and protecting someone that is fraudulent and causing great damage to the industry.
Thanks for the update. Lot of incredible information on this channel.
I used sea&Sea film cameras for 25+ years. When I went digital it was Gopro, 4 then 7. now I need Light, so i riggedup to 5 LED lights around my Gopro. Friends called it Gopro on steroids. These LED lights cost 25 euros each that doesn't break the bank on a 3000+ holiday. At the end of the holiday 3 of 5 LEDs were flooded but I was still filming. Todays chinese LEDs are better, Suptig LED at 35 euros robust brilliant. However Gopro is CRAP for still photography. I was diving RED Sea and my Buddy was diving a TG6 with a hand held torch. Back home I saw his results. Couldn't believe it. I had to have it. So now I run TG6 in -60m case, with Strobe' and LED. Complete system less than 1000 Euros. my friends with cased SLRs and two big barrage baloon Strobes in Macro can only compete if they have decided to dive the whole dive in macro. I use a wide angle adaptor screwed onto the front of the rig. I can shoot wide angle, normal and even Micro, through this wide angle adaptor. OR If I want unscew it and put it in my pocket. 1000 Euros can get you a long way.I don't neet mega mega pixels I watch my pics and vide'os on the computer screen.
I don't live near the sea, am a Holiday diver, so post trip maintenance is a big thing.. All gear goes in the bath, camera gear gets its own special bucket. Then the camera gear gets a soak in demineralised water, which you buy at the local DIY shop. The water where I live is particularly hard. If left to dry on quality Glass you can see a crystalline trace..
On analog I used single strobe S&S for 30 years axed mostly macro. Digital I started with Gopro and immediately started adding Cheap LED lights I NEED LIGHT. These cheap chinese LEDs kicked outr a bit of light and I would mount up to 5 on my rig. It gave me a wall of light. My friends called it Gopro on Steroids. OK these LEDs cost 20 Euros cheap Chines crap. Ina weeks diving holiday two would flood and get thrown away. A gopro is not great at still photography but it taught me video. To get back to some great still photography so I got a TG6, YS strobe and built a new rig. This is a TG6 + Gopro + strobe + 1 or more LEDs. Yes TG6 does good video but the Gopro is filming away in the background while I work on my still shots. The Latest Suptig LEDs are now quite good don't flood easily and only cost 35 Euros. For most stufrf they are better than an expensive dive lamp. Dive lamps are too focussed will give you uneaven exposure and when video wide angle just give you a blob.
Possible to let new mebers onto the wetpixel forum? Been waiting since September and can see many great posts on google that I can't access. Also would like to look at the classified section.
Thanks for sharing Adam and Alex! I just to want buy 45 viewfinder until I watched this video, and now I'm really considering using nauticam viewfinder 40°/ 0.8:1 I just want to make it clear, can I use it for DX DSLR camera? I'm using D300s with sea&sea housing. Thank you for answering my question, cheers.
What is the remote trigger talked about at 21:09? I have serached for it an can't find it anywhere. Thanks!
Thank you!! So, there might be some hope for my Nikonos glass!!
Great video, helped me understand the method for my class!
would love to see picture examples in here with different lenses.. looks like my first underwater lens will be the EF 16-35 f4 (mainly because the housing i purchased came with the right port and extension) but cant find a great deal of examples from photographers that specify what they use.
Awesome lights, great explanation..thank you
what is the name of the close lens he is spaeking about in min 5:36 ?
😎🇺🇸🏴☠️🧜 I ❤Tiger🦈 Beach !!! Big Shout Out To Captain Jimmy Abernathy !!!😎🙏🤙
Hi both, I’m a video shooter, and I configured my setup to be able to use back button focus, for the same reason your talked about, sometime you don’t have time or your system don’t have time too focus right, a specially into heavy particules water trying to focus on big animals whitch appears grey on grey … last year I missed all the shots on treasure sharks because of that, all wasn’t in focus My only concern is will I be able to remember when I’m on one mode or another … big questions, I’ll answer in a few months 😂
Thanks for sharing It’s really a learning process on a long time Alex talks about being patient for some specific subjects and maybe they are not for you (in your learning process) ahah, that make me remember last dive trip in April, I spent several hour trying to take a shot on mandarin fish, it was very painful, not sure it’s for me right now still have to learn ahah Thanks for sharing both
Sad to hear the news about Adam being the Heisenberg of the seven seas
Madoff you mean..
so lens should be very close to dome port front glass or as far as possible from front glass?
I'm still using the old Ikelite electrical flash trigger, which has been quite reliable. Is that a more resilient option than optical strobe triggers?
Great share both, my next camera ? would love that :)
Great information once again, thanks!
Thanks for this video, lots of information in there for me. Cheers.

I don’t understand why you didn’t get more comments on this one. You put out consistent content on important topics that aren’t covered by very many channels. Thanks.
A couple tossers.
Is Phil drunk 🙄
incredibly interesting. I wonder about the ever changing position of lights and cast shadows and how they get processed in the final model - same as changing colour with distance (green/blue in more distant objects, beter WB in closer, strobe illuminated objects). I cannot imagine how complex the software must be to process all this and wonder how much manual involvement is necessary or possible. Thanks for this info!
When you talk about droplets on the dome. I have heard of guys using ''Mexican spit'' or what is commonly known as anti-fog drops like what you use in your mask. Rain-x works but is a bit of a gamble as it seems to leave residue.
I love that at the time of recording the trioplan was a "cheap lens" to buy, but has since skyrocketed to £400+ for the original ones hah I managed to get a pentacon projector lens with a manual focus, which is ultimately the same lens.
Interesting review, as this is likely to be the same as the Z8. However the latest firmware has improved AF drastically, where it is, apparently, on par with A1. However I don't know about it's macro capabilities. I find it odd there is such a lack of reviews for the Z9 underwater, but loads on A1
