Contextually it’s important to acknowledge that this took place in the USSR. It may explain why they seemed to be blindly following commands. At the time the USSR were in a Cold War with the US, and wanted at all times to remain seemingly perfect to the outside world. An extremely corrupt society that saw that corruption manifest in a stupendous mess during Chernobyl. It’s also important to acknowledge that at this point and till this day, a core has never exploded and it was seen as an impossibility. So in a scientists mind, it just wasn’t plausible even with evidence that this could happen, so what you’re seeing is shock but also honest disbelief. From what I’ve heard this series is very true to fact.

I read Legasov's papers (interview), which, like, was on tapes, and I can say, goverment sent many scientists on plane to Chernobyl at once when Chernobyl situation appears (also in Department of Energy came from Chernobyl signal "1;2;3;4" which means all types of danger: nuclear, fire, explosion, radiation). The Comission was created on this situation, which included Legasov in the same day, when all this happend. Scientists saw all this staff in Chernobyl, and started to do something. And one of the first questions was about evacuation. This was little bit longer than should because level of radiation was within normal limits, pretty low, and doctors thought, that this will be ok, but scientists (physicists) realised, that there will be rising of this level. But doctors didn't sign papers of evaquation because of normal level, and scientists signed papers by themselves, and only after that doctors also signed. Preparation of evacuation wasn't in one day. People were warned before evacuation, but in the form of leaflets at first and policemen went to apartemts and said it orally. And it wasn't effective, because people were told to stay at home and don't go outside, but still mothers with children walked on the street. After that about evacuation was said three hours before evacuation. After that was buses (but some people wnt out of Pripyat by their own cars), which was prepared for the short time. But about temporary evacuation - it's true. This information from Legasov's tapes (it's in Russian, but, I think, Goggle translate will be ok: viperson.ru/articles/tekst-iz-pyati-magnitofonnyh-kasset-nadiktovannyh-akademikom-legasovym-v-a-ob-avarii-na-chernobylskoy-aes knigago.com/books/nonf-all/nonf-biography/334981-valeriy-alekseevich-legasov-tekst-iz-pyati-magnitofonnyih-kasset-nadiktovannyih-akademikom-legasovyim-va-ob-avarii-na-chernobyilskoy-aes/?p=1)
About "Death bridge" - it's legend. This is nuclear city (new, and not as shown in the series), people knew, what can they wait. But like dramatical move in show - it's ok.
KGB existed in this period. But not like in Stalin's period, how was shown in this show. It's Gorbachev's period. Perestroika, you know. Very soft period. They wasn't on every corner to prepare of censure something or shoot you. It was in Stalin's period, he really liked that (XD). But this is laughable in Gorbachov's period of USSR.
Legasov said "truth" about Chernobil in Vienna's conference. And goverment was "ok" with that fact, but wasn't "ok" with a fact that Legasov revealed some secret information that he was not authorized to disclose. After that only panishment he had that he didn't receive state awards. He was worried about this and because of the fact that he had cancer due to Chernobyl, which is why he killed himself.
I think, you heard that accident with helicopter was in different time and wasn't because of radiation, but this was just an accident. But I am ok with that. It's for dramatical purpose.
Miners... Geez... Russians will never work without at least underwear. It's not healthy, you know (in Chernobyl especcially). There are footages from this period on TH-cam (and in the end of the show) and no one was naked. And minister wasn't like this. People respected him because he knew all this miner's job (he used to be miner). And in this period no minister came to the people with machine gunners. It was unneccessary and unimaginable.
And many, many things also wasn't like it was shown...
This show mostly was based on the book "Chernobyl prayer", but not the real facts. Yes, still, there is the real facts you can see in this show, but they mixed with lies. And this is so ironic. This show about "truth" but lied to people, who wasn't lived in this period and know about catastrophe only because of this show.
It was strange for me that this show didn't show 1st May parade in Kiev, when Chernobyl happend. When people in this time didn't know about catastrophe, and goverment didn't cancel parade. It was horrible, but at least it was true.
Still, I respect this show because they showed this catastrophe for more people. I was suprised that on the West so many people don't know about Chernobyl.
Camera work and montage are good, I like development of Scherbina character (but I can't compare him with real person because he met with Legasov just few times). I like the first episode (but, how I know, workers on the station also helped with fire) but don't like stereotypical moments about this period. And I don't like the last episodes because it feels like creators will do anything to lead the viewers to the moral that was voiced at the beginning of the show, and this episodes existed only for that. And I don't like show to show USSR in this period so stereotypical for Western viewers. USSR wasn't saint. But in this period they weren't like this like it was in Stalin period.
Don't think that in this show it's all truth. It's mistake. It's just show based on real events with his own moral and distorted details to achive the desired effect and the right level of drama. Like this - it's a good show. Like telling the truth about those events - it's not. But I hope that people after watching show will do some research about all this events and USSR of this period.
I recomend to watch this review about this show from russian reviewer, where he do some research about all events. Even if you sceptical, maybe, it will be interesting to you to see the different point of view on this show with included facts (there are english subtitles): th-cam.com/video/dvVkvrA-TPc/w-d-xo.html
(P.S. Sorry for such a long comment and mistakes in text. I am not english speaker and I tried to my best ^_^")

A lot of the same "just following orders" stuff happened with 3 mile Island in the US, thankfully it was a much smaller scale disaster.

I can understand them being like 'nope didn't happen' because nothing like this had ever happened before, they literally didn't know it could explode like it did..

Visiting Chernobyl isn't illegal. They offer tours of the "Safe" areas and I'm sure the giant Safe containment unit is off limits.

Amazing show, but such a real life tragedy. I was a young girl in the USA when this happened. Don't remember much other than it being on the news alot and my parents talking about it. I know alot was changed for the show but most was very accurate. The USSR was so secretive that no one trusted what they said about the accident. But this really was and still is a huge problem for the region all these yrs later. It never happened before so no one knew what to do to fix it. Smdh

Valery Khodmuck was vaporized when the core exploded. There is only one firefighter that survived and he is still alive but his fellow units didn’t survive. Chernobyl was the beginning of the end of the Soviet Union even Gorbachev said it was the true cause of the collapse of the Soviet Union

Not really true about the firemen. Lots of them did survive, and many of them gave testimonies about it. Only 7 or so died from immediate effects. Mostly from being on the roof. Those on the ground suffered from ARS too, but the fields weren't as strong there as they were on the roof where most of the radioactive material landed

One of control room operators, Boris Stolyerchuk, also survived, and is still alive today. Khodemchuk was not vaporized, though. He was buried under the debris and his body was never recovered, because the room he worked in, was right next to the core. When it exploded, he worked in his duty post as pump operator. He was the very first victim of Chernobyl.

I think that if someday someone makes a miniseries about the pandemic here in the US, it would work as a sequel to Chernobyl. There are very similar elements to both stories.
