    Thanks for being so open and honest about the cost. The great thing about camping and caravanning is that there's a way to do it on just about any budget as there are so many options.

    Excellent Excellent video - well done for all the details but more importantly as you rightly highlight the benefits of the RV lifestyle are enormous. The travel, the discovery - the being out there and DOING things - the benefits to health and Mental health are tremendous.
    All that great activity and visits and for fraction of hotels / cottages / bnb and like you said more opportunity for more nights away for the same outlay.
    So thanks for making the video which equally applies to Motorhomes , Caravans and Tents for getting out there and doing.

    Fantastic, I know initially it sounds a lot and indeed it is but, just look at all the places and good times you have had and people you have met. I'm retired and a pensioner but, my wife is only 51 and we are working out our finances to see if we can get her to retire next year. We have just changed our Bessicarr E540 for a new 4500kg Hymer which should last us for many years and we are hoping to go away next year and subsequent years for 3 months at a time abroad using both Aires and the ACSI card.

    Bob and Jenny thank you so much for a super vlog so informative .... we are relatively new to motorhoming (18 months) we used to have a home in Spain but we didn’t like leaving our boys (aka mini schnauzers) behind although they did come with us on several trips, .but having the the motorhome has really been the best decision we have made .... so many places we have visited and many a great dog walk has been found 😊 we have gleaned so much from your travels - we have booked to go to Ypres in Belgium next year and now have car in tow with an A frame I do hope maybe on our travels in the future we bump into you both and Poppy- looking forward to seeing your review of your
    Motorhome - I do hope Poppy

    Scary eh , when you add everything up. I love motorhoming as you can find so much nicer places, than trying to find a cottage that's available when you want it, a nice area and most importantly dog friendly. Also if you're in a cottage you don't talk to neighbours, this is a surprising benefit , I didn't think about. Great work .

    Hi from NZ . Really enjoyed your chat about the costs of owning a MH and of course Poppy! Of course some of the charges are different here in NZ we have diesel road user charges you seem to have a tax of some sort. Hi Bob, very informative video as in the future we will swop the caravan and big car for a Motorhome. Some of the costs with the caravan are similar, site fees, insurance, service etc. So not a big jump as it initially sounds. In education, being pc you can't use brainstorming, it needs to be shower thoughts or some other such daft terminology.

    You guys are so funny. Love the sense of humor about everything. I like how thorough you are, the whole brainstorm thing like when you work at a company. I wish I enjoyed keeping track of expenses. But I don't. I made a spreadsheet and keep track of all income and expenses for a few years and then last year I didn't do it. I just can't motivate myself. But it is really nice to see the total for the year and where the money went. And I'm just taking about house and living costs. I don't own a motorhome.

    A very interesting video Bob, the costs are likely to scare many people away.However, it looks that you have depreciated the vehicle costs over the 4 years, so the next few years will see some large cost savings- unless you change the van.Owning a motorhome isn’t a particularly cheap affair, but has its advantages, if you take you costs over the 4 years it’s about £15k per annum, you can have some great holidays for this amount of money but possibly not going away for over 100 days a year, some people may not wish to be away this amount of time. I have been discussing with Alan Heath the high costs of such vehicles here in the UK compared to Germany, which makes this keeping lifestyle unaffordable to many. To arrive at a more realistic cost, I would be tempted to depreciate the vehicle over 10 years, and there would be some residual value left for a potential part Ex judging by the second hand values of these vehicle. I hope you agree?

    • @BobEarnshawMoHo
      @BobEarnshawMoHo  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, we didn't make the video to scare people off. The main point is that the biggest cost is buying a new Motirhome or upgrading to a new one. I don't think we'll be keeping it for another 6 years though, so some expence will be incurred.

    • @adrianhockey9334
      @adrianhockey9334 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Bob, thanks for your response.Your video reflected an accurate and open assessment of operating such a vehicle and was worthwhile sharing your experience for the benefit of existing owners and potential purchasers seeking the flexibility of pursuing this lifestyle.We were seriously tempted ourselves now that we have retired as we love to travel all over the UK and Europe, we looked at several vehicles and even hired one for a short trip to the Isle of Wight, which was interesting for our first adventure especially navigating the narrow roads and small villages!. The circa £50k plus for a decent vehicle was a bit daunting but affordable if we used to for about the same period as you and your good wife.However, my Certified Accountant wife decided we could perhaps pursue our love of travel using bricks and mortar accommodation for roughly the same cost albeit for slightly less number of days on the road. I remain very interested in Motorhome life and continue to watch all your videos as well as Alan Heath and Andrew Dutton for their great reviews etc.

  • @gregoriousgilbert519
    @gregoriousgilbert519 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi. great film, great details. You spend about the same per year as I do in a little house with my hounds. Am just wondering about the extra cost towing your car? It would have extra wear an tare too, all the miles you do with the 'van,' the car's tyres would do too? though their would be no load on them, is it difficult to deal with? Like when you used the big trailer, you said that was hard to do, with the A-frame, is that easier? Cheers

    • @BobEarnshawMoHo
      @BobEarnshawMoHo  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The A Frame is far easier to handle than that big trailer, plus I can't fold up the trailer and put it in the car's boot. We have done 21k driven miles in the car in nearly six years and I've changed worn tyres once and brake pads never. Probably equivalent to doing 30-35k miles.

    I think the original purchase price should be considered an investment and the true yearly cost should be offset against the joy of the life you get from it. Very interesting. You didn’t factor in the vehicle depreciation. Is this because you intend to keep this vehicle for good? If so, the depreciation isn’t a consideration. If however, you intend to update your vehicle at some point, then it must be a factor. Just a thought. Really enjoy all your episodes.

    • @BobEarnshawMoHo
      @BobEarnshawMoHo  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks, no, but we factored in how much we needed to put in after trading in the previous 'van. We do keep a record of depreciation in our Money Tracker program and we know how much we'd need to find on a new 'van! Which is scary.

    Surely the cost of the investment in the vehicle shouldn't be included in the four year assessment, as a cost, because it's not exactly a consumable item in that it should continue to last longer than the four years unlike the other costs. Only the depreciation of the vehicle should be considered. This will greatly improve the truer costs accrued over the four year, 500 night, days of use.
    Great video's, we've just ordered a used fiat Ducato cherrikee wheelchair accessible modified motor caravan after years of caravaning and struggling with heavy awnings and excessive equipment carrying. Hope to see you one day. Dave and Sue.

    Do you drive with the gas bottle open?, would recommend not to do this your fridge freezer works well on the battery when driving.and should switch between 240V, 12V, and gas as it is available.

    • @BobEarnshawMoHo
      @BobEarnshawMoHo  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We have a Truma crash sensor that shuts off the gas in the event of an accident, so if you want to use gas for heating on route, you can. The fridge has auto energy selection, so that when the motor is running, the fridge will not switch to gas, and use 12v. For safety reasons, the fridge will not switch to gas until 15 minutes have passed after the engine has been running. However, you should switch off the gas at fuel stations and on the Eurotunnel.

    based on your figures for fuel if 1.00 a litre your average mpg is 24 and at 1.20 a litre is is over 28 mpg. My guess is that on average it will sit nearer the 28mpg as it hasn't been often 1.00 a litre has been obtainable.

      I only went off the average on the dashboard, probably inaccurate.

      @@BobEarnshawMoHo what does it say on the dashboard as an average? With Luton 3.5t commercial vehicles which had a higher frontal area you can usually get 30 mpg driven steady.

      Depreciation is pretty low on Motorhomes! Saw a 15 year old motorhome for £19k the other day, cost new around £35k. How much would a £35k car be worth after 15 years?
