Nice video Bill, took me a few days to get time to watch the full length 😂

Nice shave. I think GDs are great for shavers and honers. I've enjoyed plenty of good shaves with them but I haven't tested the edge retention on them yet. Honing-wise, I've had my share of frustrations with them but I was able to learn and figure out a method to work em out. Always learning.

Thanks Tim. I have always been able to get them to shave. I suspect that based on volume they have become the worlds largest manufacturer of straight razors. Shame that they can’t even get a symmetrical grind, and so glaring mismatched at that.
I perceive there to have been a drop in the prices of used vintage pieces recently. Not a bad route there.

Nice shave Bill, I love the Electric Sheep soap with mutton tallow. I need to use my Stirling soaps more often.
I have been using my shavettes more often recently.
The end result is a great shave but with a straight razor it feels like it has more soul.
Haven't had much time for honing lately.
    Have a great week.
    Very best regards Gordon 👍

Thanks Gordon. Stirling Mutton tallow rank very high for me too.
Shaving with and maintaining straights is a labor of love for sure.
The best to you and yours.

Hi Bill, great video. Thanks for the information. I look forward using the razors. I see below that you and Bowtie RN are discussing the Essence. What are your thoughts on the Feather AC DX ? Thank you again. Have a great day and smooth shaves

    • @billm.2677
      @billm.2677  ปีที่แล้ว

I have both. New AC DX models seem to be available for lower $$ than when I bought mine.
I think they perform almost equally. Each has its own very slight advantages (DX can get under the nose easier - Essence is thinner and can shave at a lower angle.
The biggest thing is the oh-ah wow factor. If you are like me and don’t mind a couple hundred extra to be cool, you always find the money somewhere.

Thank you Bill. As you know I’m new to this version of shaving. I keep hearing about the Tedalus. I’ve stayed away from straights because of the extra work in maintenance. Now I’m trying to decide do I commit to straights or lean towards the Essence

An Essence razor will have a good resale value if you decide to bailout. The option of using a ProGuard blade is good for beginners IMO.
      I love mine.

@@billm.2677 I have a feather AC kamisori still and like the Schick P20 without the guard. I will have to consider

Proline blades are great. I like them better than Feather Professionals. Pro Supers are my fave but don’t yield as many shaves.
One of these days I should get me an AC Kamisori style. Like I need MORE RAZORS! 😵‍💫

I’m decidedly not a shavette guy. Part of my motivation for straight razors was the return to nostalgia. The hobby of traditional straight razors includes the honing. It really doesn’t take that long under normal circumstances, but it does take a commitment of some time and money for good stones.

  • @LetsShave61

What do you think of those straight razors that take disposable blades like a safety razor? I ordered a couple for shits n giggles. Curious how well they work.
Nevermind, i spoke too soon lol. Great video.

That shavette would be my fave budget minded tool. I have a couple other that use a half DE, but I like that one best.

That "razor" in question is a histopathology 'knife' for making tissue samples for microscopic review...
    Are gold dollars any good?
There are only two things that make a good (subjective of course) razor:
    1) The quality of the steel
2)The nature and quality of the grind..
Gold dollar razors are pot metal, questionable steel, with completely unpredictable heat treat ..yes you can get an edge on one ....we used to use them just for honing practice...
You can sharpen a leaf spring enough to shave with (which is better steel than most G.D.'s ), you can sharpen a tin can, or even a spoon (see Murray Carter) enough to shave with...does that make them good razors? 🤷🏻‍♂️ If so, stop spending 400$ on filarmonica 😅

Gold dollars are for practice honing only , until you get lucky with a good one 😂. Most are warped ! and as you pointed out take ages to hone straight.
Ps I found another convex cased strop " The Dandy" scientific strop .it also states " science demonstrates "The convex curve as the correct principle" ...I don't have you on Facebook , or WhatsApp Bill 😒 so I can't send you the photos .
