Woodturning - Exotic Timber Shavings To Unexpected Pieces?!

  • I've had all of these shavings on the work bench for a while now, they are just too beautiful and I couldn't bring myself to throw them away. You may recognise them from previous projects; points to anyone that can name any of the projects they come from.
I was really struggling to think of what to use these for but then saw the little plastic cups I used in the middle and thought about a whisky tumbler.
However, I think they may be a bit too big, and it's really unfortunate that the glue I used to hold down the cups in the middle dissolved and sent small glue chunks throughout the epoxy. Does look a bit like snow now! 🤷‍♂️
Let me know what you think! And don't you traditionalists worry, I won't use epoxy in all of my videos... I just had a few ideas 😉👍

My videos are for entertainment purposes only. I am still relatively new to woodturning and some of my techniques might not be the "best" or safest. When using any tools or machinery always read and understand safety/manufacturers guidelines.
Yes, I'm aware that wearing gloves while woodturning is considered an unsafe practise. The gloves I wear are tight fitting and don’t have any loose threads. I wear them for the protection of my skin. This is a risk that I am willing to take, however I am still very conscious of the potential danger and I do not touch any spinning parts of the lathe. DO NOT do anything you don’t feel comfortable doing.

This was the last video with the old lathe! It was sad to say goodbye, but it was time for an upgrade. I've got the new Axminster AP508WL installed and ready to turn, so stay tuned for lots more exciting projects. What lathe does everyone else have? Or are you looking to buy your first? 😁👍

I have a little Axminster - an old version of their current 305WL. I do wish it was a bit bigger sometimes but I don't really have the space for anything much larger!

Great job as usual Harry! I started less than two years ago with an Holzmann DF460FXL. Last year I had an upgrade with an Holzmann 810. It' an Austrian brand, I choose it for the low price, but it works well for my little projects. Cheers from Italy!

I have a tiny bench top antique lathe, powered externally. I currently hook it up to a vintage Black & Decker single gear drill via a dimmer switch, for primitive speed control. As you might imagine, I don’t video my projects, such as they are!

Stratos XL. It'll probably see me out. I started off with a mini Proxxon model makers' lathe to make pens. I belong to a woodturning club and it's traditional to pass your old lathe onto a beginner or someone on low income when upgrading.

Great idea Harry and I really like the finished product! I've just been turning some Rose Myrtle and Purple Heart and have got a load of shavings - and you've started me thinking! Where do you get your resin?
Congrats on your new lathe, I look forward to seeing it in action!
I started with a little Axminster hobby lathe but treated myself to a Coronet Regent a couple months ago - it's a good balance between power and versatility while still being compact enough for my limited workspace. I'm still getting to grips with it but loving the gains. That said, I love the quality and reliability of all the Axminster range - I will keep my old Hobby lathe for when I start going to craft fairs and for smaller projects. Why do we get so attached to our lathes?

I'm trying to figure out whether I'm just hangry or my negative feelings about this video are genuine.
First, I notice almost a third of the video is about vacuuming the epoxy. That's a part I just skipped. Then, after the usual process of turning the pieces that turn out to be a pair of tumblers, I see whiskey being poured *from a measuring glass*, notice how murky the tumblers look, and then you even add a couple ice cubes just to cut my appetite. Then, to top it off in the most ridiculous manner, there's the plastic sound from the glasses clinking, ending the video abruptly. I had to rewind the last few seconds to try and have a look at the glasses because you didn't take the time to show them off, but none of the wood chips show, just a nondescript dark coloured bottom.
The whiskey serving preferences aside, I think you missed the opportunity of showing off the finished glasses properly. I hope my comment inspires you to play around more with lighting and camera angles. As they were shown, the top part seemed almost dirty (which is sort of off-putting when consuming a fine beverage), and the bottom part showed pretty much nothing special. I know you've done better, so here's one hoping for progress!
