Woodturning a Spectacular Split Log Vessel

- Thank you very much to everyone who voted in the poll for the color of this piece. My wife found a Facebook post for free wood in my area. I was able to get a bed full of these Eucalyptus logs. I cut most of them into a variety of bowl blanks, but kept a few logs as well. I specifically did not seal this particular log because I wanted it to crack for this specific design. Unfortunately there are hundreds of Eucalyptus species and I do not know exactly what species this wood is, but it sure is beautiful. The Okinawa green from Eye Candy pigments looks fantastic with the deep pour epoxy from Superclear epoxy. I was also able to use the new flat tool rests from Simple Woodturning Tools for the first time on this piece. They worked amazing and I will definitely be using them more in the future. I really like the way this piece turned out and will likely come back to this design in the future. I rarely like to make anything more than once but this one will be an exception. Thank you for watching and all the amazing comments. You all are awesome! I hope you have a wonderful day!

This is a great video and stunning result! In the past I've watched quite a few of these kinds of videos - which I've greatly enjoyed - but I think you and Olivier Gomis are the only people I've seen use a stabilizing roller device (I think he has used them for these really big pieces). I have seen the consequences in a few videos of having a piece fly off the lathe when held at one end by a mortise or tenon which is horrifying and heart breaking though I guess fortunately infrequent. The device you're using seems genius to me in preventing that. Also, I have never seen the laser guide before - does that help you track the depth/width while gouging the interior? Again, great video!!! 👍
I really like your video
That’s absolutely amazing great work.
Thank you very much Jim, as always I appreciate the kind words. Thanks for watching. I hope you have a great day.

Very very cool piece. The green goes so well with the wood color and it looks like a starfish so that really adds to the outcome as well.

it gets better and better as the beard grows :)
Wow love this
Thank you very much!
Che bello valorizzare un pezzo di legno altrimenti non utilizzabile se non nel camino.
Quelle fessurazioni, debitamente saturate in resina, ne hanno fatto un'opera d'arte della natura !!!
Not only is this a beautiful piece of art, but it’s a really well produced and edited video. You were fun to watch in creating this vase, you certainly deserve a subscription from me and many more Scott. I look forward to seeing more of your talent on display.
Thank you so much! I really appreciate you taking the time to leave this comment. It means a lot to me. Thanks for watching, I hope you have a great day!
Scott
Nailed it.
I love it because it's one of those alien face huger eggs and it's just hatched :o
It is really beautiful and I love the Alien movies, well at least the first two
I will not be able to unsee the alien egg now. Thanks 😆😆. Thank you for watching. I hope you have a wonderful day!
Scott
@@squareandlevel you are welcome, haha
Brilliant
Thanks!
Would look really cool to do the same or similar design with a transparent smokey resin so that you can see into it
Great idea! Thanks for watching. Hope you have a wonderful day.
Scott
Очень красиво, бесподобно !
Красиво. Редкая ваза, которая понравилась. Последнее время люди не знают, чтобы такого сделать ив результате часто показывают ординарные неинтересные изделия. У вас много красивых!
Magnifique,
Bravo
Thank you
Keep that outer part, you can cut it up and use it for something equally stunning. :D
Absolutely! Thanks for watching.
Scott
Love this…….
WOW!!!
Saweeeeet!!!!
Thanks!!!!
We have chosen wisely.
Hermoso, muy creativo!!! 👏👏👏💖💖💖🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷
Thank you!
Superbe
That's a awesome piece, What kind of hot glue is that? I didn't know hot glue gave you that much time b4 it dried
Thanks! It’s nothing special. Picked it up cheap on amazon. Thanks for watching. Hope you have a good day.
Scott
👏👏👏👏👏
Have you considered using straps to lower in the mold? They could be used to pull it back out too.
Also, you might use silicon caulk for the seal?
This is a very, very nice piece and a great idea. Would you mind if I do the same in the future?
Absolutely! I look forward to seeing your take. I just subscribed to your channel. Thanks for watching. I hope you have a wonderful day.
Scott
@squareandlevel thank you very much. I don't know when I will make this vase, but yours is really, really nice. Here in Slovenia, it is a very rainy day, but when I watch your video, I forget that it is a bad day outside 😊😁
So what interesting use do you have planned for the discarded shell (6:49 - 6:53)?
Already used some of it. I’m sure I’ll come up with something for the rest. Thanks for watching. I hope you have a great day.
Scott
Wow
How did you sort out the problem with the leak in the pressure pot?
All good now. Was able to cut out the wood with a multitool and broke the resin with a hammer and steel pipe. Thanks for watching. Hope you have a great day.
Scott
Subscribed! The epoxy+turning craft is amazing to me and your channel does not disappoint. I also really like your video creation style. This particular piece came out amazingly well. Dang, that leak in pressure pot is painful.... sorry you had to deal with that 😣 Now I only wish I could learn to use a lathe while also learning the required common sense to maintain "life an limb" so-to-speak 😂
Thank you very much for taking the time to leave this comment. I really appreciate it. The pressure pot is “good” as new and ready for use. As for wanting to learn there is no better way to do it than just getting started. I’ve only been using a lathe for about 8 months now. I’ve made mistakes and that’s ok. Best way to learn imo. Thank you very much for watching. I hope you have a wonderful day.
Scott
If this piece were to show up in a shop, what might the price be?
Unfortunately I cannot answer that question. I have never sold any of the pieces I make. This is my hobby and I enjoy giving the things I make away to friends and family. Thanks for watching. I hope you have a great day.
Scott
@@squareandlevel That's too bad because I would consider purchasing it.
👍👍👍
5:15 I'm curious how to fix it?
I fixed it with a multi tool, steel pipe and a hammer. It’s all good now. Thanks for watching!
Scott
🎉👍🇵🇹
👍👍❤❤👏
't's but a scratch!
Put item into vacuum first, then pour.
Thanks!
Love it. Very nice!
Thank you!
I prefer wood turning over massive generation of micro plastic. Good luck and bye.
So macht man also Microplastik, sehr Umweltfreundlich.
