Thank you very much to everyone who voted in the poll for the color of this piece. My wife found a Facebook post for free wood in my area. I was able to get a bed full of these Eucalyptus logs. I cut most of them into a variety of bowl blanks, but kept a few logs as well. I specifically did not seal this particular log because I wanted it to crack for this specific design. Unfortunately there are hundreds of Eucalyptus species and I do not know exactly what species this wood is, but it sure is beautiful. The Okinawa green from Eye Candy pigments looks fantastic with the deep pour epoxy from Superclear epoxy. I was also able to use the new flat tool rests from Simple Woodturning Tools for the first time on this piece. They worked amazing and I will definitely be using them more in the future. I really like the way this piece turned out and will likely come back to this design in the future. I rarely like to make anything more than once but this one will be an exception. Thank you for watching and all the amazing comments. You all are awesome! I hope you have a wonderful day! This is a great video and stunning result! In the past I've watched quite a few of these kinds of videos - which I've greatly enjoyed - but I think you and Olivier Gomis are the only people I've seen use a stabilizing roller device (I think he has used them for these really big pieces). I have seen the consequences in a few videos of having a piece fly off the lathe when held at one end by a mortise or tenon which is horrifying and heart breaking though I guess fortunately infrequent. The device you're using seems genius to me in preventing that. Also, I have never seen the laser guide before - does that help you track the depth/width while gouging the interior? Again, great video!!! 👍
I've seen many pieces of different epoxy resin compositions with wood and I just wanted to say that this particular piece is most probably one of best that I have seen. Thank You
I'm not one for turning epoxy turnings but I do like how they look and this is awesome and love how you came up with the idea! My hat off too you!!!👏👏👏👍
What an innovative way of bridging the pieces for the pour. Your solutions look so simple and straightforward..., which means a hell of a lot of thought must have gone into it! Stunningly beautiful result!
Man, allowing a log to split in times past, and not even that long ago, would have resulted in firewood, not a project that turns out so mesmerizing to look at.
just a suggestion, but pour a 1/2 inch layer of silicone in your pressure pot and vacuum chamber if you have one. Then if you get a resin spill it will peal right out.
Thank you Mike. This is one of those pieces I want to try again with different wood species and colors. Should be pretty easy to cracked split logs. 🤣. Thanks for watching sir. I hope you have a great day! Scott
Not only is this a beautiful piece of art, but it’s a really well produced and edited video. You were fun to watch in creating this vase, you certainly deserve a subscription from me and many more Scott. I look forward to seeing more of your talent on display.
Thank you so much! I really appreciate you taking the time to leave this comment. It means a lot to me. Thanks for watching, I hope you have a great day! Scott
That came out really cool. Good luck getting the spill out of your pressure pot. And thanks for including links to the tools you use. So many times I see one that I might be interested in but have no idea what it is.
I'm not a huge fan of epoxy even though I have used it to make some very nice pieces but in this case it just seems appropriate. Excellent job as always 👏
Some will say negative things about including resin in wood turning etc. It's just a substance and art is made when an artist uses whatever to create their art. I personally think it turned out nice :)
Thanks Tim. I also have a pecan log that checked a bit while drying in the shed. I’ve never turned pecan before. Maybe I’ll give it another try with the pecan. Thanks for watching as always. Have a great day. Scott
OMG, wow, that is spectacular and I’ve never seen anything like that before. I would certainly find a home for that one :-) it truly is amazing what can be made out of essentially scrap wood which goes to show never write off anything.!!!
Che bello valorizzare un pezzo di legno altrimenti non utilizzabile se non nel camino. Quelle fessurazioni, debitamente saturate in resina, ne hanno fatto un'opera d'arte della natura !!!
Just found your channel and that piece is absolutely stunning! My wife can see an alien starfish holding that log. 🙂For a while now i have been thinking about using resin, and although it's quite expensive to buy in the UK, i think the results might be worth the outlay.
