I do say because you are the one who said that the first generation TT was a "hairdresser's car". Obviously, this is the first generation, so why bring it up..............
I love coming back to this video periodically, it really shows what APR is capable of. It’s also what inspired me to work there for 2.5yrs Thanks for putting together a great video all those years back Matt 🤘🏼
I am an older person who occassionally watches fast cars tested & eval'd & never having driven anything fast, I sometimes get excited, imagining myself in one. But this little (I have seen them) car, with this power & sweet sound, may be better than the manly Mustang 302 sound, does have me excited. I like the guy from APR talking quality. I want 1.
I took delivery of my APR Stage 2 + RSC Audi TT RS just a few weeks back. Incredible! With their racing program, APR are building data, reliability, and performance into a great package!
We drove the RennTech CLS63 stage 2 and HOLY SHIT is it good. My list of priorities for a luxury car now include "Must be able to do rolling burnouts at 60 mph"
I have a MK1 Audi TT Quattro with the 6 speed with the stage 1 APR upgrade. Ive had if for a year and its been awesome. Drove halfway across Canada last summer and no problems! Pretty fun fast used car for a pretty good price nowadays. I watch this review once a week and dream of owning one of these newer TTs with that stage 3 APR upgrade! Thanks Matt and The Smoking Tire for these amazing inspiring videos! Drive On!
As this is a prototype kit, pricing hasn't been announced yet, which is why we didn't say it. Based on recent information, it's going to be "give or take" $10,000 for the upgrade, which is a hell of a bargain if you ask me.
APR develops everything themselves. This is why I believe they offer good value. Sure, there are other parts that can be had for cheaper but the quality of the APR (and certainly Stasis as their's is warrantied) is what makes them well priced. You can mod cheap or you can mod well, rarely can you do both.
Here's the test: using only this video as evidence, prove the time, date, location, and exact speed I was going. If you can't do that, neither can the cops. We film in a certain way specifically to get around certain things. But at the end of the day I still have a ton of tickets and my insurance rates are insane.
I always dreamed of a shop that wud specialize on audi performance now i know it exists and thank you APR FOR HAVING SAME PASSION FOR AUDIS AS WE AUDI FANS DO
Markanaldo I don't doubt for a second that it's brilliant. But this(And the S3) deserves a constant 40/60 rear-bias Quattro system, I think all Audis do. No haldex, no FWD, just Quattro.
parptarf so the R8 doesn`t have a quattro either?! that one uses an totally "oldschool" visco clutch (you know...the awd system that was used in the VW Golf 2 Synchro and T3 Syncro e.g. back in the 80s and early 90s ;) ) ...with a torsen system it wouldn`t have been as RWD biased as it is btw. "quattro" is just a brand...it doesn`t really say anything relevant about the tech underneath it. even during the 80s when they started that brand it was used for relatively different AWD systems over the years. i think the haldex system works really well...i own an 3.2L TT (8J) and it drives absolutely great! the only "disadvantage" (if really you want to call it that way) is that without software mods on the haldex system and fiddling with the overall balancing you can`t power-oversteer the car on dry roads. though you can easly do that on snow, gravel and also to a certain degree on wet roads. on the other hands...besides doing donuts, continuously drifting an torsen-quattro isn`t all that easy on _dry_ roads too...you need to tune the shit out of the car and even then it isn`t as fluid as in an RWD. ;) PS the 40/60whatever bias of an torsen system is by no means _constant_! in fact it wouldn`t make sense if it`d be that way. :-P
But still, with all that writing you did. No haldex system, regardless how expensive the car is, isn't the same as the Quattro system that the old Audis had. That's sort of my point, I was hoping Audi put the old 40/60 RW bias into the car they put a straight five in.
8:13 on says it all, owned VWs and Audi's my whole life. Love these things. Maintain and stick with APR, you will love life and not have to drive a Mustang with Chrome plated switches, 😆
I live in New Zealand and South Africa, and there are dealers in both of this countries. I don't work for APR, but most of the VW and Audi drivers would recommend APR mod because its very reliable and safe.
Thanks for this review. I know it's over 3 years old, but my TT is well over that, too ('08). Think I'll have to contact APR to see what good things might happen with the 3.2L engine. Hmmm...
Mark Johnson Unfortunately not much, its a real struggle to get anything substantial out of the naturally aspirated cars. The 3.2 does sound nice with an exhaust though.
+Mark Johnson ECU,exhaust and filter will make a difference for you car but it would have made much bigger difference if it was turbocharged... But go for it :)
There is a company out of the UK named jdsautodesigns that make turbo kits for your model tt. The stage 4 is their top kit producing 650hp with 550 on the torque. Beware tho, it is extremely pricey! If I remember correctly, it's like 24k for the stage 4 and that's not including beefing up the clutch disc on the dsg or clutch assembly itself on the manual tranny. IMHO, you have to really love that particular car to spend that kind of money on it. In reality tho, it still beats spending 100k+ on a car with way less power/fun, minus the extreme luxuries and refinement.
I couldn´t really grasp that fact either. I would have seen it at a mid to low 3. Under 3 is absolutely phenomenal! And you just have to love that 5-cylinder engine!
Joey Kissinger As I said, cars are cheap in America. Audi TTRS is about 120 000 dollars in EU and that's just the base model plus whatever the stage 3 upgrade costs...
I have stage 1 APR on my volkswagen, it's literally upped it 60 hp and about 100 tq just from a ecu upgrade, absolutely amazing. better milage (as long as you don't punch it) and it's still as reliable as the day I bought the car. I recommend APR to any audi/volkswagen owner.
You talk about the clutch, but what about the gear box? Can it really handle that much power? And what would an Audi dealer say if you bring it in for a service?
+zemekiel The manual can't really, the 2nd/3rd syncros are rather weak and will often smash if you drive it have at increased power - need to have them superfinished/ converted to titanium
This car just is flying, like MACH 5 at 2.8 seconds, WOW! at 5 seconds you are enjoying the road, 4 seconds just unbelievable to be in the car without loosing CONTROL! 2.8 seconds NOT sliding, crashing well:) DONT forget UNITRONIC tunes for FORD, CHEVY, all others and local too in most big cities stage 3 is offered!
LOL! Anecdotal evidence is the source for most opinions (based on my observation, which is...you guessed it - anecdotal evidence!)! All joking aside, APR is US based and MTM is European so their popularity is regional.
Haldex slows the car, with a proper quattro transfer case it would launch faster. I can`t tell how much I hate haldex, I drove sti`s, evos, I own an X, and a proper awd system can make a car handle better and be more forgiving for mistakes, but a haldex is just a load of horseshit compared to these.
William Dieke You've obviously never been in a TT - enough 'cargospace' to fit a large mountain bike. And as I say to every other moron who calls its a hairdresser's car... You car is obviously a lot shitter and slower than a hairdressers car then.
Great video. I was a huge fan of Hans Stuck and Walter Rohrl in the IMSA GTO and Trans Am 5-cylinder quattros back in the day. My TT RS is set to arrive next month. Anyway, one correction -- on the Audi USA website, if you type haldex into the search box you get a link to a glossary entry that says "it is able to transmit as much as 100 percent of the forces to one of the two axles."
Being an audi owner this makes me so happy haha, even though I don't have an APR tune I do have APR products! They are great, but for my car (b7 a4) the tune just wasn't aggressive enough :D
I can understand that, hell I even used to think like that. But you would be surprised how much more people listen and believe you when you can spell and punctuate. Again, knowing that english is not your first language, you have my respect. And you are right... 2.8 seconds 0-60 in just under 600hp is hard to believe, even though the car is AWD. I'd believe like a 3.2-3.3, seeing as the car isn't stripped out or anything like that.
BECAUSE HE'S A CAR GUY, and we can level with him. He's one of the best presenters online to me, because he is JUST a normal guy. We aren't going to be able to handle a car like Nedell, so we can't take his driving impressions completely seriously.
Why have i never seen an audi tt rs in person? the greatest looking, greatest sports car in production today. really 0 idea what people are buying now a day
we have really been going back and forth. so many cool cars. but i think me and my wife have decided on the 2017 tt rs. gonna go nuts, get a custom color and do the European delivery. just have a ton of fun with it.
Man, I know this video is old, but GD! This thing sounds nasty! I've liked the TT since it came out, I drove the very first one at a dealership in our tri-state area, it was the 180hp 1.8 turbo and it was fairly impressive, I've respected them since then. I ended up with a S2000 after also driving the IS300.
Good review. Your spot on with the low end lag of the I5, same issue with my AAN running 26 pounds through the stock turbo,,, but when it goes, it goes :D So good to hear the 20v rumble again!
OMG I've seen that blue Audi WAGEN 00:07 near me in Mobile, AL. Makes me happy to see fellow APR enthusiast around. I don't see it to often. I must meet this mystery WAGEN man.
We won't be filming with Underground. When scheduling filming for this season, they did not make it a priority to return our calls, so we did not make it a priority to give free publicity to their company and their cars. We filmed a Heffner TT Gallardo instead, which makes sense, since he did a TT kit in the Gallardo 2 years before UGR did anyway.
it probably isn't. But the fact that the little Audi can run the kind of numbers normally reserved for a 911 Turbo with a bolt-on kit that costs around $10,000 is very impressive.
We can ALL relate to THAT!! You guys should do a LASER JAMMER / RADAR DETECTOR episode!! Whaddaya think? Good Idea??? Good Idea??? I know Alex Roy has talked about detectors and his famous M5, but how about a whole episode?? Tips..pros/cons..etc?? DO IT!!! DO IT!!
I love how APR IS inspired by the 5cyl and loves this engine cus thats wat got me into audis asswell i love those audi 80s rally days with the S1 quattro
I was one of the lucky people that actually got to daily drive the homogenization 1985 Audi Sport Quarto cars, Charcoal Gray. IT was an out of the world experience, faster and handled better then my 911 of that same year. I miss that car so bad, should have kept it, there worth a fortune now. Have been somewhat disappointed in Audi's over the years this is the first time I am considering my new car to be the TT RS. :-)
APR...AUDI PORSCHE RACING.....I hope they make most of there products! Proves they are one of the best for your car right there...Thank you for admitting it!
All you can hear when he's on it is the turbo sucking all of the oxygen out of the air. 5 cylinders can have one of the best / most unique sounds out there
Your point is, unfortunately, well-made. But, rest assured, we're not all like that. In 7 weeks I'll be driving my APR-tuned Mk4 GTI from CA to Austin, TX to attend the inaugural USGP at COTA. It will be the first motor sport event I've ever been to. BTW & for what it's worth, we Americans are starting to build some pretty cool cars, again.
Like i said, it was on a stock clutch because they haven't installed the new, upgraded on yet, as this is a prototype vehicle. There's hard and then there's "sidestep it from redline" hard. I released the clutch from about 4,000 RPM, which is as abusive as I was willing to get with a borrowed car.
Just saw some of the race versions of this TT RS at Nurburgring this weekend (at the VLN Endurance race on Saturday), I am seriously debating these over a used GTR they are that incredible. Props to APR. That turbo lag is normal for me with my Evo now, I spool around that same RPM range, 3300. I'll post some videos from the track on my channel. Great review though, nice work.
Oh my lord! I so want this car! I sold my mkI TT after modding the crap out of it to get something faster...a Hayabusa. I would return to the TT with this for sure!! Ridiculous power!
Love how hes straight up and not cocky about his vette and hes honest that it will eat his big boy toy.. Awesome most guys will totally bull shit about that cause their heads too far up their ass.. Right on man APR #1 champ.
Okay guys, lets set this straight. From Wikipedia: The Audi TT takes its name from the successful motor racing tradition of NSU in the British Isle of Man TT (Tourist Trophy) motorcycle race. NSU began competing in the TT in 1911, and later merged into the company now known as Audi. The Audi TT also follows the NSU 1000TT, 1200TT and TTS cars of the 1960s in taking their names from the race. The TT name has also been attributed to the phrase "Technology & Tradition"
Great video and drive does great work. Have to say that the camera work isn't up to the usual standards set by you guys. Far above the average youtube channel but seemed a bit spotty compared normal. Still, love you guys for doing this and thanks for living one of my dreams.
man who ever thinks the TTRS is a girly car isnt a man this car is beautiful and powerful
First generation TT has always been seen as a hairdressers car.
Themayseffect TT 8N driver confirmed.
Anders Kristensen
This obviously is not the first generation TT.............
1820AL You dont say?
I do say because you are the one who said that the first generation TT was a "hairdresser's car". Obviously, this is the first generation, so why bring it up..............
I watched this video a million times before I flew out to Virginia and bought a Misano Red APR Stage 3 TTRS. Best 9 hr drive back ever
I love coming back to this video periodically, it really shows what APR is capable of. It’s also what inspired me to work there for 2.5yrs
Thanks for putting together a great video all those years back Matt 🤘🏼
Watching this video also inspired me to clean the apr toilets for several years
I know this video is old, but even today I want the 2013 TT Rs. it is my dream car. I am saving my money for this car no matter how long it takes me.
PhysicsPixel good job my dad did the same he had a coupe a RS2 and a RS6 but he sold both the coupe and the RS2 still hate it
The 2017 is gorgeous. It is my dream car, of course with it including APR's Stage 3 tune on it once it is developed.
PhysicsPixel awful daily car!
Did you get one?
i always come back to rewatch this video here and there. =D
Me to mate i have an audi urs4 same silver one they showed in the shop
Wow! Me too.
I want 1.
I live about 2 minutes from this place. APR R8 that drives through town is crazy awesome.
I took delivery of my APR Stage 2 + RSC Audi TT RS just a few weeks back. Incredible!
With their racing program, APR are building data, reliability, and performance into a great package!
The TTRS was my dream car in college, and still is.
2.8 sec to 100 not bad.
you can do it even better.
the new ones look so brute. I would actually buy one
Maybe...if my amg broke....if amg started producing shitty cars, or if the M3s stopped driving like they are on tracks
I love it too Matt! The new TT looks great and 600HP is exactly what the doctor ordered!
The Audi TT RS is an amazing car. Test drove one recently, amazing drive and easy!!!
Practical R8?
but faster :)
Fred Bloggs It‘s not faster stock vs. stock and neither is it tuned vs. tuned. If anything it is a budget R8.
Love the stage 3 turbo kit on this car. im a huge fan of german cars and I have a turbo Audi TT RS. It is awesome.
This thing would be an absolute sleeper!
You can’t make an Audi badge a sleeper especially when the badge says “R.S.”
@@KING0SISQO Well if you make it "Lambo killer", you might call it kinda sleeper"ish

Man the video Editor of this video is PROFESSIONAL
it will, for a while. APR recommends (and sells) a clutch upgrade if you plan on launching the car at all.
When I heard the TTRS didn't have Quattro but haldex I died a little inside.
still 4wd? iv got an s3 and its brill
Markanaldo
I don't doubt for a second that it's brilliant. But this(And the S3) deserves a constant 40/60 rear-bias Quattro system, I think all Audis do. No haldex, no FWD, just Quattro.

i think the haldex system works really well...i own an 3.2L TT (8J) and it drives absolutely great!
the only "disadvantage" (if really you want to call it that way) is that without software mods on the haldex system and fiddling with the overall balancing you can`t power-oversteer the car on dry roads.
though you can easly do that on snow, gravel and also to a certain degree on wet roads.
on the other hands...besides doing donuts, continuously drifting an torsen-quattro isn`t all that easy on _dry_ roads too...you need to tune the shit out of the car and even then it isn`t as fluid as in an RWD. ;)

Also another thing, I don't say the fwd bias haldex sucks, I've drivien it and it's great. But the 40/60 rear biased Quattro is just better.
APR!!! I'm a stage 3+ owner... brings a smile to my face allllllllll the time
Corvettes should always come in 'nutsack red'.
After reading previous reviews about this car,I'm speechless. That's why I like this guy.he.knows everything. Looks like I need to safe my pennies
8:13 on says it all, owned VWs and Audi's my whole life. Love these things. Maintain and stick with APR, you will love life and not have to drive a Mustang with Chrome plated switches, 😆
I love how everything looks so uniform under the hood
In a memory of Group B...
I live in New Zealand and South Africa, and there are dealers in both of this countries. I don't work for APR, but most of the VW and Audi drivers would recommend APR mod because its very reliable and safe.
Wish I had 10k to put into my S4..
I might be picking up a used one of these. I really appreciate this video, thanks man
Thanks for this review.
+Mark Johnson ecu upgrade , intake an exhaust. however you can go to places that make custom turbo kits for any car dude same results
+Mark Johnson Just buy a TTRS and be very happy with what that 5 cylinder is capable of.
I couldn´t really grasp that fact either. I would have seen it at a mid to low 3. Under 3 is absolutely phenomenal!
And you just have to love that 5-cylinder engine!
i freaking wish i was rich after watching this. wow
You probably wish you were rich every day.
Or just move to America, that car is cheap there. In Europe on the other hand...
That's a $60,000 car in America plus whatever the stage 3 upgrade costs.
Joey Kissinger As I said, cars are cheap in America. Audi TTRS is about 120 000 dollars in EU and that's just the base model plus whatever the stage 3 upgrade costs...
pavettto
still not exactly cheap
I have stage 1 APR on my volkswagen, it's literally upped it 60 hp and about 100 tq just from a ecu upgrade, absolutely amazing. better milage (as long as you don't punch it) and it's still as reliable as the day I bought the car. I recommend APR to any audi/volkswagen owner.
German cars al the way
Man I live in Alabama about an hour from APR & I still couldnt believe it.
You talk about the clutch, but what about the gear box? Can it really handle that much power?
And what would an Audi dealer say if you bring it in for a service?
What warranty?
+zemekiel if youve gone so far as putting upgraded turbos and changing all the cooling in the car you shouldnt be worried about warranty. Pay to play.
2.8 seconds NOT sliding, crashing well:) DONT forget UNITRONIC tunes for FORD, CHEVY, all others and local too in most big cities stage 3 is offered!
lmaooo I died at "nutsack red"
I just got a new S4. I love this thing!!!! Not going to tune it for a while though.
the most famous audi tuner is ABT or MTM
What are you basing that on?
if6was929 the amount of guys having stickers on the back of their audis ^^ very scientific, i know
LOL! Anecdotal evidence is the source for most opinions (based on my observation, which is...you guessed it - anecdotal evidence!)! All joking aside, APR is US based and MTM is European so their popularity is regional.
true words..
im from EU so thats seems right for me
That strip decal APR has added to the car looks nice. Very tastefully done.
57.000usd is the price in the us??
Yup.
TheVman551 Cheap as butter.
Tommy G We don't use periods, we use commas. It's $40,000 I believe actually.
***** In your dreams its 40k$ new..
Tommy G I think that's for the base TT. Once the TTRS is available, it's actually more like $80K++. Great cars, but you have to REALLY want it.
Jetta plus APR =bullet proof performance
Haldex slows the car, with a proper quattro transfer case it would launch faster. I can`t tell how much I hate haldex, I drove sti`s, evos, I own an X, and a proper awd system can make a car handle better and be more forgiving for mistakes, but a haldex is just a load of horseshit compared to these.
Nagy Szilard I don't think the Haldex slows it down in a straight line. It just means it handles more like a fwd car.
I drove one of these today with the apr tune 420hp 430 Torque. Awesome car for the money! Very fun car to drive :)
Just think! It would have been even faster if he wasn't so fat. Amazing!
That thing's exhaust note is soo nice.. Reminds me of the first time I test drove some mk4 R32 with an exhaust flap mod..
Too bad Audi put the engine in a fucking hairdressers car, it should be in A4/A6 chassis.
***** That is no more than a toy with almost zero cargospace, the A4/A6 are usable...
William Dieke You've obviously never been in a TT - enough 'cargospace' to fit a large mountain bike. And as I say to every other moron who calls its a hairdresser's car... You car is obviously a lot shitter and slower than a hairdressers car then.
Adam Collingburn i agree. I have a tt and i drive bulldozers for work. Ill see their crappy cars in my rearviews
No cargospace? I fitted a dismantled greenhouse in the back of my mk1 TT coupe. :-) you could probably sleep in it.
brian niven
LOL I've slept in mine, and I wasn't alone ;)
Great video. I was a huge fan of Hans Stuck and Walter Rohrl in the IMSA GTO and Trans Am 5-cylinder quattros back in the day. My TT RS is set to arrive next month. I can understand that, hell I even used to think like that. But you would be surprised how much more people listen and believe you when you can spell and punctuate. Why have i never seen an audi tt rs in person? the greatest looking, greatest sports car in production today. really 0 idea what people are buying now a day
I've been living in Opelika for the last 9 months and just realized APR is here
Wait until you see the next generation shortly! WOW and interior even BETTER in the USA!
we have really been going back and forth. so many cool cars. but i think me and my wife have decided on the 2017 tt rs. gonna go nuts, get a custom color and do the European delivery. just have a ton of fun with it.

Damn love that this TT-RS is all wheel drive
03:04 - my curent favourite moment in any drive video so far, when this turbo spols up and peels the tarmac, lol. Love it!!!
it probably isn't. But the fact that the little Audi can run the kind of numbers normally reserved for a 911 Turbo with a bolt-on kit that costs around $10,000 is very impressive.
APR rocks!! thanks for doing this episode! hope to see something on an APR stage 3+ gti!!!!
i love their tunes on my s4 avant and my allaroad... cant wait to do more
We can ALL relate to THAT!!
I never liked the earlier Audi TT's mainly because of the design, but I love the design of the TTRS!
Standard clutch actually holds that much power and torque? That's impressive!
this guy is incredibly entertaining
I was one of the lucky people that actually got to daily drive the homogenization 1985 Audi Sport Quarto cars, Charcoal Gray. IT was an out of the world experience, faster and handled better then my 911 of that same year. I miss that car so bad, should have kept it, there worth a fortune now. Have been somewhat disappointed in Audi's over the years this is the first time I am considering my new car to be the TT RS. :-)
Loving my APR tuned S4. Huge fan
Thanks for that, Matt. Like I wasn't lusting after the TT RS enough already. Jeebus.
APR...AUDI PORSCHE RACING.....I hope they make most of there products! Proves they are one of the best for your car right there...Thank you for admitting it!
All you can hear when he's on it is the turbo sucking all of the oxygen out of the air. 5 cylinders can have one of the best / most unique sounds out there
A man of my own beliefs... Deeply appreciate it...
Im not a big fan of the VW-Audi-Groupe (VAG) but APR looks to me really professional they do a great job.
greetings from Germany
If that's only Stage 3 turbo system... then the Stage 3+ system must be INSANE!!!! :)
@sawyerbobby Several cars employ this system, but usually 6 or 8 cylinder cars. This car has a single turbo
Great show Matt!
Most badass engine of all time
I was thinking about getting my audi tuned by APR. Great tuning company.
Those roads really fit the TTRS
Love how hes straight up and not cocky about his vette and hes honest that it will eat his big boy toy.. Awesome most guys will totally bull shit about that cause their heads too far up their ass.. Right on man APR #1 champ.
Coming back to this old video to see more 5 cylinder content. That silver urS4 is gorgeous! When are you guys going to have an urS on the channel?
Okay guys, lets set this straight. From Wikipedia:
The Audi TT takes its name from the successful motor racing tradition of NSU in the British Isle of Man TT (Tourist Trophy) motorcycle race.
