    The tufts and the plants combine perfectly.
    Fantastic use of cork bark by the way.

    Just had to say that you have done an excellent job at not just your video "how too's" but also your product's and your website, very professional ! Been wanting to do something (same but a little different) for a long time now, I just never get round to it, :( Hopefully I will at some point, and it would be a pleasure to sell some of your product's ! Hello James! Thank you for reaching out!
      In that step we applied a mixture of putty and PVA glue to add some height volume to the bases, in this way you can create the desired slopes/crevices of the setting.

    Oh my god, I never thought to sand down the bottom of my bark. I have been doing this hobby for over ten years and now i feel very, very dumb.

    I got the AK muddy ground, as I couldn't find the MiG one in stock anywhere. it looks like it will do the job, but it has a slight grit texture to it. Does the MiG stuff have any sand n it, or is it totally smooth?
    I hope it will work to do this kind of base, as I think this is for doing tyre tracks and stuff like that on military dioramas. It's hard to find decent info on this stuff before you buy it though.
    Even if it doesn't get used for these bases though, it'll definitely come in useful. it looks much more realistic than the citadel ones.

      You're right! Its always a nice idea to study the base space as you build them.
      A good way is to keep your miniatures close and try out how they best fit in your desired layout.

      To create the thin vines in green stuff we first roll them with our hands by applying a rolling pressure. Please see this GIF where we show you a visual example: media.giphy.com/media/v1.Y2lkPTc5MGI3NjExZjI1OTM2OTI0YjlkMjcxNmJmMWY5ODNjOTUyZDI4ODg1ZTYwOWRmNCZjdD1n/7nMYUpipPDREUGonuC/giphy.gif

    Which vallejo pigment do you use here? I have four in my mind but don't know which one was here:
    Natural Umber, Green Earth, Light Yellow Ochre or Desert Dust?

      I think we used the "Light Slate Grey" pigment for that theme. But "Desert Dust" can also achieve a similar effect!

    wondering what undercoat you used for this, please? (the spray) is it fur brown army painter? I thinking it is similar to resistance rust by TT combat, but it's probably closer to to fur brown.

    • @GamersGrass
      @GamersGrass  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello! Thanks for your question!
      We used two different primer sprays for these.The first, which we use to undercoat all of the surface, is FOSCO's "Flektarn Brown". The second is Liquitex "Burnt Sienna", which we applied horizontally from just one side of the bases, to create a sort of light variation. We sometimes do this to help us see the shadows and create slight variations.
      We hope this helps!

  • @D00M3R_MAVS

    will you guys be making the alien plants in different colours, too? I'd like to have them to match the other alien tufts as well. I am working on a design for my tau, I originally just was going to use some basing sand and rocks and stuff, paint it black and then barely highlight it up, then likely use a mixture of void tufts, bloodmoon, the dark purple ones and the pink ones 9not the pink with the blue under, the ones that are almost a salmon colour)
    I mainly wanted to do this design for the sheer contrast of it. My Tau are mostly white (the armour at least is) so the black bases with some bright tufts either in common or in contrast with colours on the armour. I do really like what you guys have done here though in creating a sort of Avatar planet. I might take cues from here and actually sculpt the earth a bit more, use some wood and other plant life. I definitely want to keep the overall look as incredibly dark though.
    I was thinking like volcanic soil or something. I'm sure there is actually black sand IRL, right? But it's alien, and fantasy so like whatever goes, ha ha. It is nice to have something that at least looks based in reality though.
    Would really like to see you guys do a sparse desert theme as well. I really want to do some rolling sand dunes and buffeted skeletons, partial ruins etc. Would look awesome. I've never done much with the basing textures though, so probably a bit too technical for me (to get the sand looking right) but this style of base with Necron ruins would be amazing. the black and green of the black stone against the yellow sand, would look really nice IMO.
    I did something similar, only with a red planet style. I only ever made one though. I did the ruin with one of those green stuff world rollers, and just used green stuff to do a details layer. I couldn't really master the half buried look though, as I didn't have all the proper tools (textures mainly it seems) to do it. I tried using some of the citadel texture stuff, but that's pretty limited, you can't really sculpt too much with it... it looks alright TBF though.

      @GamersGrass  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much for your feedback!
      Cool insights! Your idea for a dark setting for the Tau seems great! It will surely bring a nice contrast. Regarding that your Tau are white in color, we could perhaps suggest using darker colored tufts for contrast, and also focusing towards one color (that would be dark, like the overall color of a given planet). For example for a dark reddish planet, using a mixture of the "Alien Void" and the "Brown" tufts (in a dark, slightly red earth). Or for example a dark blue planet, mixing the "Alien Void" with the "Alien Frost" or "Alien Turquoise", and with the "Alien Fern" and "Alien Rosette" Laser Plants.
      The most "Alien" of catalog of Laser Plants are the "Alien Flytrap", The "Alien Fern", and the "Alien Rosettes", they can match the tuft colors by contrasting a lot with them (for example the "Alien Fern" with "Burned" Tufts), or by matching with their color (like the blue "Alien Rosettes" with the "Alien Turquoise" Tufts for example.
      The "Black Magic Taro" plant has also a nice dark purple color that can be used well in "Alien" worlds.
      Thanks again!
      Happy Hobbying!

      @@GamersGrass thanks for the tips, I'll refer to these when I start making my bases.
      I got some of those brown ones as they seem really useful, and the micro beige as well... also some of the rossettes.
      I'll see what I can come up with once I start building the bases.

    • @D00M3R_MAVS
      @D00M3R_MAVS ปีที่แล้ว

      not seen those black magic ones, will have to look them up.
      also for my tyranids I'm doing these frozen bases (that are simple to do, I learned them from Trovarion)
      essentially you start with varying sizes of basing sand, then paint it black. Then you paint the entire thing with the turquoise liquid pigments from gs world. Then you use less of the white liquid pigment.
      This gives you the base for your frozen world, and then you use the GS world snow texture to add (well snow, Lol) to it. It looks different to other snow in a pot though, and more like snow that has sat there a while and is a bit Icey.
      I got the frozen alien tufts to go on these as well. while they are very similar in colours to the base, it will blend in nice.
      I got the spiky white tufts you guys made as well, so will be adding some of those, too (I do have the other snow tufts as well, but they might be a bit to realistic to go next to the frosty alien ones. I will have to test and see how it looks)
      I also have the spiky brown, beige and green. I love these tufts for adding a bit of height.
      I should be able to use the Brown ones on my Tau bases as well. I'll likely go with void, brown, spiky brown and then maybe the salmon pink ones (or even the darker purple ones)
      I did want to have at least one bright colour on the bases that looked good against the tau scheme (the scheme is white armour plates with brown panel lining, blue lenses and some red parts. essentially the same as the new, Tau box art)
      So having some colours that contrast well with the blue of the lenses and the red armour sections.
      I have all of the alien colour tufts now though, so I can test out some different colours and see what looks best.
      PS: you used the mini beige tufts on the rocks on your design, right? I picked some of those up as well as they look cute and I'm sure I'll get use from them.
      I would really like to do a base with the pink/blue and the blue alien tufts like you have in this video, but I have no idea what army I would use it for.
      What kind of colour schemes do you think this base best suits, please?

    • @D00M3R_MAVS
      @D00M3R_MAVS ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GamersGrass the blue sounds really cool actually. the tau scheme has some very sparse red panels (sometimes the helmets are red, too) and then the lenses are blue as well (if you look at the newer tau boxes, this is the scheme)
      So both of those ideas would work I think. either a dark red earth or dark blue earth.
      If I was to go for the dark red though earth though, I'd probably use brown, void and then maybe the dark alien purple as well.
      I won't always use all 3 colours on every base though, it's just to have more variety going on.
      Do you think the alien rosettes might look good with these colours as well? I only have these from the laser plants range so far.
      definitely plan on getting more though.
      TBH I almost want to do a Jungle base now to use more of the laser plants. I could do jungle for my Eldar though and go with red armour. This would have awesome contrast against a green, jungle style base.
      I think I will be doing some Eldar next TBH, so definitely something to look into.

      Hi Simon! Thanks for reaching out!
      We used acrylic paints from Vallejo, AK Interactive and Army painter. After priming with a reddish brown spray, we used a deep blue on the rocks. Afterwards we went kept adding a bit of white to the blue paint with each drybrush step. And for the ground we used an orange, not a very bright one.

    • @GamersGrass
      @GamersGrass  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello! Thank you very much for your question!
      It's not Paint, it's Thinned down PVA glue. We use it to seal the bark (or other organic materials) and to strengthen the overall base resistance. In this case, even though we didn't sprinkle any sand after the pva glue, we applied it to the ground as well, since it hardens the upwards texture we created for the ground.
      Happy Hobbying!

      Hi!
      Do you mean the first white paste we use to add height volume? - That is a mixture we prepared of wall repair putty (any brand will surely work) and PVA glue.
      We later covered it with a ground texture - this is the "Muddy Ground" from AMMO by MIG.

    • @D00M3R_MAVS
      @D00M3R_MAVS ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GamersGrass yes, thanks. it was the white stuff. I got some moddling stuff that will hopefully give me the same sorts of results.

    • @D00M3R_MAVS
      @D00M3R_MAVS ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GamersGrass I bought some liquitex modelling paste or something along those lines. I enquired and it should do the job at least for adding some height before I use the muddy texture.
      I couldn't find the mig one in stock, neither so I got an AK version.
      I also bought some wood chips for lizard houses, I should be able to cut them to size though... I just hope they're not too small, but I got a boigger bag as apparently you get bigger bits in bi9gger bags.
      This is way cheaper than buying bags of bark chips from gaming companies though (and I guess cheaper again to buy the giant bags for playgrounds and stuff, but at least with the lizard tank, stuff you know it's all dried out already)
      I've been wanting to get some of these to use for rocks for a while now though, it's infinitely better than cork (with cork especially you have to do a lot of work to it to make it not just look like a piece of cork)
      I really would like some of the resin materials you guys make, pillars and rocks and stuff. Element never has them in stock when I go to buy them though.
      Are you guys based in Europe as well? I live in UK, so maybe I can just order directly from you guys?
      Big fan of your stuff though. I probably have around 20 (at least) different styles of tufts from you guys, ha ha) like I say though, I'm addicted to nice basing materials. I probably like designing bases even more than painting minis.
      I'll have to share some stuff with you guys when I get some finished.
      I definitely want to show you guys my Ice planet bases and whatever I settle on for my alien jungle style bases for my Tau also.
      I'll definitely use your video as a guide though. great idea for making vines from green stuff.
      I just hope it transfers mover with the palette swap. as like I say I want to go really dark as the base colour.
      I'll do some testes though and see what has the best contrast/unity with my scheme.
      I am pretty good at colour theory (and have a wheel to fall back on if need be) so confident I can make it work.
      oh I just realized. I don't have the toxic green tufts yet. They're the only alien tufts I don't have yet.
      I definitely would love to do some swampy bases at some point though, and I'm sure these will be great for that kind of environment.
      You guys should totally do a swamp base tutorial (and a desert one) I think I already mentioned doing a desert one though with some Necron ruins.

      Hello! Thank you for reaching out!
      We used acrylic paints from Vallejo mainly. At the time of the video we didn't add the paints in the description yet (unlike the latest videos) so I can't remember the exact paints themselves.
      However the rocks and ground revolved around deep blues and brownish orange tones.
      Also, feel free to try out similar paints of similar tones for your scheme, it will surely work fine for the bases.
