    these look Really Great!. i can imagine a Tcheentch Chaos Demon on there Model Pistachio Shells perhaps a bit more purples and way more Cyan and less Magenta if the model I'm using on it is a Pink Model. and More Magenta and a bit less Purple and way less Blue if the Model is Blue. i was even thinking of Gluing a couple Pistachio Shells on to the Base. and Painting them to look like Eye Balls Opening up from the Alien Terrain. perhaps using Hot Glue for a water effect and painting it with Glow in the Dark Paints to look like Liquid magic, where there would be water... so much Inspiration from these Bases.

    This couldn't have come out at a better time. I'm about to start making bases for two separate armies that are supposed to be on alien worlds, an alien tundra and an alien jungle/rainforest/fungal bog respectively. You even demonstrated it using a lot of the colors I was heavily considering using, and it looks great.
    One piece of advice I can give back is that another way to make a cheap and weird alien plant/fungus is to use plastic coffee stirrer straws. Use a lighter or something and carefully move the stirrer towards the flame until the end starts curling, then pull it away. After it's cooled, which only takes a few moments, snip off the curled edge with a bit of extra length from the rest of the stirrer and then melt the new end, repeat this process several times. After you have a few lengths of these you can stack the non melted part of the snippings into the melted part of a different snipping. The end result is a weird, ridged, smokestack like plant/fungus. If you have ever played it, it looks a bit like the spore throwers from the game Alpha Centauri.
    So next time you go out and get a coffee somewhere remember to save and clean out those little plastic straws!
    Thanks for the video tutorial!

    The Green Stuff World tentacle roller is an excellent tool for those of us who aren‘t drowning in Skaven tails but still want some tentacle action on the base. Best part, since you‘re making them from your sculpting mass of choice you can freely pose them ;)

    Very cool!
    I painted the Daemonette Start Collecting box set a while ago. I wasn’t overly happy with how I painted them, though, so they ended up stuffed in a drawer (I never intended to play them anyway), waiting to be stripped and repainted. But, the other day, I was searching through my drawers for a lost figure and came across my Daemonettes. I was pleasantly surprised, they actually look quite good (I think this might be the curse of using a magnifier to paint. Poor lighting, too). So I started thinking about basing ideas... This video has come out at exactly the right time for me.
    I really want to get some stuff from Gamer Grass, but with diseases and Brexit and not knowing where they are based, I’m not sure if it’s worth trying to put an order in right now.
    I never did find that lost figure. So now I have an Orruk rider without a mount...

    • @VinceVenturella
      @VinceVenturella  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I will say that the Gamer's Grass stuff should be available directly in the UK, check out Bad Squiddo Games, they might have some. As might Element Games.

      Thanks. No luck with Element Games (which is a shame because I have bought from them in the past), but Bad Squiddo have them. Though guess which one is out of stock... They do have the Alien Fire tuft, though, which is ideal for the Orruk Bloodbowl team I have on the way, which is going to be based based on Hellfire Peninsula from World of Warcraft (The team will be called the Hellfire Hellboars).
      While looking at pictures of Hellfire Peninsula, I spotted Zangarmarsh in the distance, an area that I have always loved. I was thinking that it’d be ideal for an alien style base, but I think it’d need OSL skills to properly pull it off; something in which I am sorely lacking.

    Love that base Vince. I usually tend to shy away from colorful bases as I feel like it will distract from the mini. How do you balance this with your own minis? Thanks and keep ip the awesome vids! :)
    PS New thumbnail is much more appealing as its cleaner. hope more people find these videos because of youtubes algorithms or just the click factor. If you really wanted to make the thumbnail irresistible you could have an “alternate title” there, like “synthwave bases” or something similarly trendy. But regardless your videos are top notch and ill watch them with whatever thumbnail :)

    • @VinceVenturella
      @VinceVenturella  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      So in general, I use very bright, saturated colors on the minis, so this wouldn't clash with a bright tyranid for example. If you are painting some muddy death korps of kreig, I woul stay away from this sort of thing or tone it down.

    Nice tutorial!
    I have a qustion: How would you paint pearls? Upcoming Hedonite mage seems to have huge pearl on top of his staff. It looks like it has some light orange/brown and greenblue shades in it. Would it be best to use oil paints for this case? Thanks!

    • @VinceVenturella
      @VinceVenturella  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not a simple question, pearls or the pearlescent effect is one of the most complex things you can paint. I have recorded a tutorial on it a few times, but I was never really happy with it. I am going to refine the recipe and have something ready when the Slaanesh release comes.

    When I did snow bases, I used gloss varnish (over a full covering of matte) on everything that would be shiny due to the snow & moisture. Were you saying I shouldn't of done that?

    • @VinceVenturella
      @VinceVenturella  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is one of the few cases where you are okay with gloss, I would still be choosey with it, snow still creates specular highlights, but I use it to show melting snow on the edges and keep the piles of snow matte other than a little pearlescent powder to cause some minor catch lights.

    So after binge watching your tutorials any pointers regarding a obsidian base ? I imagine it's similar to your marble basing ?
    (Picked up the runic greenstuff world Roller and was thinking of using obsidian as the stone that the runes sit in )

    • @VinceVenturella
      @VinceVenturella  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Obsidian is actually one of the toughest things to paint. Because it's gloss black, so there are two options.
      1) You do a very extreme NMM black with a very short transition from pure black to white reflections. This will make it look like obsidian if you place all the lights correct, but is extremely time intensive.
      2) You just paint it black and then give it a gloss black. Much less convicincing, it will look cheap, but it is a lot quicker. ;)

    • @austinj2065
      @austinj2065 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@VinceVenturella thank you so much ! Would it have a better convincing effect if I did the second option added rubble and edge highlighted the Rubble ?

    • @VinceVenturella
      @VinceVenturella  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@austinj2065 Less likely, the challenge is then you will have some highlights that are static and some that are dynamic, this is the challenge, if you added little rocks, you'd want them in the same style.

    I wonder how well it will work with Kharadron Overlords. They have a lot of warm copper and gold that's difficult to balance with other metals, and Chamon was invaded by Tzeench so weird stuff on the ground should fit the lore.
    A great product to use with alien bases is Green Stuff World's tentacle maker. Fluorescent paints fit here, too.
    Btw I remember you only did a tutorial on using oil paints to shade large metal parts. Can you do a Hobby Cheating on how to paint airships with Vallejo Metal Color? More precisely, how to shade their bottoms, because they are up in the air so they are lit by global light and reflection from the ground, but at the same time they should be in the shadow of the ship itself. Do I need to use a darker VMC paint there (say, going from Aluminium on the hull to Gunmetal on the bottom) or is it okay to use an oil wash and airbrushed dark ink to create a believable shadow?

    • @VinceVenturella
      @VinceVenturella  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure, I will add it to the list, but the general answer is don't over think it too much on large vehicles, the metal paint in VMeC will do most of the work for you. My general method is to have a nice shadow that is at the top 0 degree line and then go up in highlights toward the bottom of the ship (from the reflected light).
