  • As we start the next course of the hyperadobe earthbag roundhouse, we realize we may have a huge problem. One of the straight walls is more than 12' without a buttress. Or is it? Depends on what feet you use.

I love it all! That sweet, sweet dog sleeping in the sun! Your kids are fantastic! I love that you can start and stop when you want to. You don’t punch a clock and you can quit when you’re ready. And you have the freedom to stop one project and work on another if you want/need to! Bliss! I envy your lifestyle, but I do not envy the hard work! Love you guys!

You are good for my health. In the past I was painter, renovator, and community activist. Since my heart attack and 11 stents I have not been able to do much physical labor. I lived off the endorphins produced hard work and the excitement of achieving. Watching you guys has given me that endorphin I used to get from work. my heart thinks you, my Dr. Thanks you, but most of all I thank you.

Ashley, suggest some type of hook or hanger (maybe one of those tall planter hangers) near the mixers. Hang the hose up each time you use it. Dropping the nozzle on the ground is what is causing it to leak. I went through a few nozzles before I realized I needed to stop throwing them on the driveway/patio/garage floor. 😍🇨🇦

Guys love these videos. You are so right that there is always a project to be done. FYI please take in consideration about possible injuries that require larger openings. Really wonderful suggestion, everybody gets a visit from a family or friend who needs to use a wheel chair or walker at some point in time, and the doors and frames get less nicks and dents during their use.❤

And my mother in law tells everyone I changed our house plans 100 times. But my husband says he was good with it, since I never made a change after material was in place. So, as long as you don't have to unbuild anything, y'all are golden! Ignore them couch worriers.

Using sign language for distance communication is always helpful! I once toured the Washington Post printing department; at the time, because of the loud machinery, nearly everyone hired was deaf, and if they weren't when they started, they were when they left! Everyone working there knew ASL, and used it to communicate over long distances or short. It got me into BSL (British, Glaswegian dialect) translation!

The one thing I will advise you to do when it comes to doors is make them wider than you think you need. My parents were building a house what doesn't seem like 30 years ago, but my how time creeps up on you. My mom and I both worked in health care at the time (she is now retired and I have another 20+ years to go until I retire) made sure the doors were wide enough to get a wheelchair and a walker through. I designed her master bathroom and told her what she needed to do to make sure no changes would need to be made to the house when they got "older". My mom was actually younger than I am right now when she built her house. I had a home care client at the time I had to shower and they had this "bench" built into their shower. I told my mom about this, roughly drew it out on a piece of paper and she incorporated the same thing into their house. You can use this bench for shampoo and soaps also sit on this bench which is what my dad did when he had his knees replaced. There's stuff you don't think about until the time comes and it will come faster than you think. I was thinking about hyperadobe until I saw you all doing this and if I build something like this, it'll kill me. I am going to go with straw bale and just like hyperadobe, you have to interlock, otherwise the walls are not sturdy.

I would check with a firefighter supply and/or horticultural supply company. The Forest Service equipment I’ve used in the past is hard core and long lived. Real thick brass and real thick rubber. I can’t recall the companies but maybe a call to the local fire house or forest service office could guide you.

Dramm nozzles seem to work the best for us, but even those leak after a short period of time. We put a good quality shutoff between the hose end and nozzle. We have no leaks when we shut off there. At first it seems a little awkward, but muscle memory kicks in after a short time and now we don’t even realize we’re turning it on and off at the shutoff.

Still watching you all! I assume you're referring to hose nozzles when you asked. Our hard western water is really hard on plumbing. Check out Dramm. You order the parts ala carte: handle, wand, head. You can replace parts as they fail. I have a Dramm twisty head, which ends up soaking in vinegar-water a couple times a season, on a short wand. I also use a full flow head on a long wand with a shut-off valve attached. High pressure nozzles are available too. A little plumbers tape where the parts connect to the wand and Bob's your uncle! Same heads and wands after seven years--no leaking. Worth every penny.

Maybe it could help you in the future, when you add glass bottles, to have both sides of the bottle in a plastic bag. Both sides will get 'dirty' only after the last coating. You just cut the plastic round and the glass will be very clear and clean.
What do you think, if this will work?

Your family is amazing. How do you keep yourselves and your family motivated. The respect, commitment, and communication is beautiful.
Also, if someone has a couple of loose shingles on hand that would help with the slipperiness of the ramps. Attach a section of shingle to the ramp. With Adalai’s adobe, Hayden had barbed wire between the rows… do you plan to do the same thing?
Thanks, again, for sharing your amazing story.

Thanks, hyperadobe bags don't need barbed wire because the mesh allows the material to connect with the previous layer.

May we have another look at the chickens inside the chicken garden?

Replacement of rubber gasket in handle and plumbers type around hose threads and tighten from time to time. As we work we have a tendency to drop the head of hose to the ground

Replacing hose gaskets is easy. Our nozzles fail internally.

Hey! I noticed you asked about a good nozzle! Definitely confirmed Dram
Nozzles. Also, consider quick disconnects to minimize screwing all of the nozzles on and off. You have a dessert to deal with. Sand is likely your nozzle problem. :)

It’s the sand, but it’s not where it screws on. It’s like it’s inside the handles.

Could you possibly stop a few feet before the overlaps & work on the inner first. Then come back & do the overlaps, adding those nailer board at the joins. Each time you stop before the overlap at a different point, like brick layering 🤔 Like a foot difference, back & forth on each inner row. Then do the outer circle & those overlaps would kinda be like doing buttresses. Eeek, I can see it in my mind, reality of course could be a whole different story.
