I loved your changes to the sweaters. I loved all of them but the purple one was genius. I could not imagine what you were doing until the end! It looks great on you.
Very helpful ideas for adding closures to those buttonless sweaters! Much more cozy. An idea for the last sweater, if people don't have some scrap chiffon, is to thrift a coordinating scarf to use for the closure, or as lining, as you have done. Your videos are very encouraging. You are probably a really good teacher to your students, as you are to us.
I’ve seen twill tape used to stabilize the front of a sweater before adding the zipper. The tape is cut in two identical lengths and that way the sweater front can’t stretch unevenly. Then the zipper is hand basted. Sweaters with horizontal patterns can so easily distort. I loved this video. So inspiring.
Thanks! And thanks for the glasses opportunity, and that Cowichan sweater, as a knitter familiar with its history and various cultures and traditions, I’m in awe. ❤
All great ideas! I just turned 2 long cardigans into dresses, one with a 2-way zip, and the other one I sewed together along front band and added non-functional buttons (to avoid gapping) 💜
I have never seen a sweater like that hand knit, heavy wool one with the beautiful patterns knit into it. It looks gray and cream on my screen. You did a great job sewing in that zipper. That would be as warm as most winter jackets.
Thank you Catherine. Last winter I updated a few cardigans but didn't think of adding closures. Wonderful idea. I am in Australia so we are in spring at present but this will be great for next year. I always enjoy your videos. I have even had the courage to do some alterations for people.
I don’t wear jewelry but I do have various colors, shapes and sizes of glasses. You can be sure I will be using your code to add to my collection. This sweater update video has got to be in my top ten of your videos too. Love the variety of ideas and techniques. Lastly, gurl congrats on the 100,000 subscribers!!🎉
My kingdom for a Value Village. Seriously. I went a couple of times while visiting my daughter in Anchorage and oh my. Best. Thrifting. Ever! You are so brave to cut into a sweater - although it's not the cutting for me as much as the cutting and sewing. Steam, steam, steam is the answer and thank you for both the inspiration and the tips! My fav is the purple but I love them all. I have 2 up north that I've struggled with closures - why did I never thing of frogs? Doing that as soon as I get back! I do miss cardigans (too hot for FL) and the days of the Laura Ashley sets . . . oh, the '90's . . . p.s. You hit it! Well done and deserved! 👏🎉
That was such fun to watch! I can see lots of sweater updates in my future and I LOVED the eyewear fashion show. I JUST spent a fortune on new glasses and plan to check out the savings and options for a few more fun looks!! 🎉😂❤ Thx Catherine. 100K. WoooooHoooooo!

Oh, and I'll have you know that TONIGHT I am using that tote bag that you gave me, back in 2011! I use it every time I need to do marks, and it reminds me of you! hahaha
Congratulations on 100k! I love starting my morning with a CatherineSews video - especially wardrobe tweaks like this one! Wonderful results on all of them!
I love thriftiness as much as you and really enjoy your tutorials. I Smiled when you mentioned using a clapper. I found a great small vintage pig cutting board at a thrift store, I use as a clapper. It works so great😊🐖
Ohhh, I am so jealous of your Cowichan sweater! My grandmother used to knit them for family but I was never able to be a recipient before her passing. I don't knit and I am always on the lookout for one. I have been wanting to learn to knit so that I can knit myself one. Beautiful transformations.
Oh my, seeing that Cowichan sweater inspired me to look for an old High Sierra sweater I got many years ago from the thrift store and fix it up. It's not as chunky but similar colors and I'm sure it's wool. I'll need to do lots of shaving and I'll have to get some yarn to fix a few holes but it's totally doable. I'll be so happy to wear it again! AND thanks for the info for the glasses, I am one of the many who asked for it! ❤
Back in the day, we used disposable razors to remove fabric pill. Now we know better about plastic waste, using a metal safety razor eliminates plastic waste & sharpening the blade on a whetstone (like we should also be doing with our craft knives) makes blades last much longer. When we do recycling, all the sharp can lids are supposed to go inside one of the closed cans along with other same metals, so the blades being non-surgical can go safely inside with them. (Otherwise, dispose with local sharps guidelines, obviously - it just seems more sensible to me that they're safely recycled at 1500degC, instead of being left wrapped up in duct tape, in landfill forever.)
Catherine, those were amazing transformations on your sweaters! Loved every one! Quick question: when sewing sweater knits, do you use a lower tension on the presser foot? Congratulations on 100K subscribers too! Your channel is my favorite 😊. The Firmoo glasses look really cool! I used to accessorize with eyewear years ago, having half a dozen pairs in different colors. But they've become so expensive now - I welcome the chance to try a new resource for eyewear! Cheers! 🎉
What brand of steam iron do you have and do you like it? I have an olisio and the water comes out rust and ruins my fabric? It looks like yours has great steam. Love all your upcycle videos. I live in a small rural area in Indiana and that’s all upcycling for us with no big stores around nearby.
My mum spent months knitting my dad a sweater in chunky wool in a similar reindeer pattern. Then she put it in the washing machine, the colours ran & it shrunk. She was heart broken.😪 I'm going back to the 1970's when you couldn't really control the temperature of the washing machine. She was in too much of a hurry to hand-wash it.
Very neat ideas to do with sweaters. I bought some extenders at Michael's a couple years ago, I think they were extenders for making jewelry maybe bracelets I have a lot of long sweaters that are just plain and needed something to put at the chest area, just below the bosom. Thank you for the coupon code I am going to see if I can find it online I think you said firmoo?
I drape mine over hangers, like pants. But first I put cardboard rolls (from inside toilet paper rolls) over the hanger. So the sweaters don't get a sharp crease.
Wait, we just bought new glasses too, 4 pairs between us - for reading & distance. You can't drive in Australia without eye protection, so prescription tinted varifocals - thousands of dollars later, you tell me you can get glasses for $40????? How do you get to keep the same glasses for 5yrs? We spec wearers have to have eye checks every year, here! Kinda thankful about that, as I've really gone off the new pair.
I am not a beginner sewist, but I'm also not an intermediate sewist. I feel silly even asking this but sometimes it's hard to tell what people are actually doing when the buttonhole maker is being used. You have to move the fabric yourself, right? Unless it specifically is an automatic buttonhole stitch? I have a Janome and it does have settings for automatic buttonhole stitches but I also have the little plastic clippy thing buttonhole foot, and I just don't ever get a clear answer to that question when I watched videos on how to use them.
As long as you actually wear the glasses. You have to remember to take in to account for the resources and the production that is never cheap to the environment. I don't mean you but too many people do throw away cheap stuff after just a couple of uses even glasses. And they are made in China. That's nothing new, today most everything is but just so people know as they may not.
@@Ami5Jo Yes, you’re absolutely right. And they’re plastic, so there’s that. When I’m done with a pair of glasses, I donate them to a group that gives them away in South America.

I can’t believe I missed that! She humbly let that go unannounced, didn’t she?
I took some of my old cardigans and stitched the front closed for tops to wear at home. I just stitched all along the edge of the placket. Works well
I’ve done that too! Also with button front dresses - the lower buttons, hip down.
