I'm so glad you took the break that you needed. I'm always worried that the podcasters that I enjoy will feel pressure to produce FOs, etc, to keep viewers happy and engaged. I'm sure most people are like me...we just enjoy the company and inspiration ❤
hi Emily, when I want to knit a relaxed top-down raglan sweater without a pattern, I always do it as it's done in the Amy Sweater. I make a gauge swatch from which I calculate the sts number needed for the neck circumference. For me this is usually ca. 45-50 cm. I divide this number by 8: 1/8th is for each sleeve, 3/8th are for front and 3/8th for the back. I factor in the stitches for the raglan lines, so that my overall stitchcount still gives me my desired neck circumference. I cast on as follows: 1 stitch for right front, stitch(es) for the raglan line, stitches for right sleeve, stitch(es) for the raglan line, stitches for the back, stitch(es) for the raglan line, stitches for left sleeve, stitch(es) for the raglan line, 1 stitch for the left front. The first (wrong side) row is a purl row, where I place all my markers. After that, I increase in every right side row along the raglan lines plus 1 stitch on each side of the front. When I reach the desired yoke depth, I separate sleeves and body, adding as many sts I want at the bottom of the armhole. That's all there is to it :) I knitted dozens of relaxed fitting sweaters like this, it worked every time. (It is NOT suitable for more fitted garments, though. Those need a lot more calculating.) Maybe you didn't want to know this? ... I admit, I got carried away with the subject :)
I love this! Thank you for sharing the details of what you do. For me, the barrier to freestyle knitting is usually this front-loaded calculating, so this is definitely helpful 😁
@ingeborggroth1415 you're a godsend omg haha. When did you first learn to self-draft? I've been interested in giving it a whirl since I can't find a pattern that's exactly what I want and I typically modify my patterns anyway!
I agree with the other writers: I appreciate your content whenever you are able to produce a podcast. I love that you are real and honest with your audience. The knitting community in general is very relatable! Keep up the great work!
Aw, Emily! I'm so grateful that you are caring for your self. I completely understand that it challenging to translate a passionate hobby into a business, and please keep protecting your joy and inspiration. Less frequent posting is absolutely fine with me and I'm here no matter how often you show up
Your Amy sweater is beautiful. Thank you for mentioning how it’s constructed. Now I have to make it because you’re right. The turtleneck is curving down the collar and not cutting across. It looks more comfortable for people who can’t handle regular turtlenecks.
Super delighted to have watched you and all of your beautiful projects. Your Algonquin trip looks spectacular. What a stunning spot to have knit and now be able to enjoy the memories when you wear your sweater!
so glad to see you back! can totally understand wanting to slow the pace of posting, it is so needed sometimes! I love all the colors you've picked and may have inspired me to cast on the Amy sweater.
Nice to see you back. As a fellow teacher, I know that there are so many deadlines and commitments that we have so I'm pleased to see you taking time out for yourself and re-connecting with your joy of knitting. Take your time in all things x
It’s so good to take a break when you need it, I know how to feels. Knitting is such a slow process that demands a lot of inspiration and such breaks are definitely needed ♥️ I am so in love with the color of your Amy sweater. I wanted a plain color, and checked a non-tweed wool of the Andes, they have it! It’s called burdock heather and I want a cabled sweater in it 😍 such a complex deep interesting shade! Loving all your projects and looking forward to a new video 🤗
I find your phrasing here so interesting! The idea of a demand for inspiration makes me think about the duality of creativity: it’s a muscle that can be strengthened by practice, but some downtime, rest, and even boredom can make space for new ideas!
I've missed your frequent content but I fully support you making a smart choice for you. I will celebrate every new episode that comes out, whenever you share it, and I'm that much more appreciative. Take care and stay focused on your "why."
Emily, I love your projects. The Eun is stunning and cozy. I'm very attached to that knit. You are tiny and tall but small otherwise. It seems odd that you wear a large. Interesting. I knew you said your gage was off; it looks so cute. The Amy sweater is also attractive. I've missed your podcasts, but seeing you again is excellent. Your projects are always very nice.
Thank you, Trudy! Sometimes it can be tricky to discuss sizing since designers and commercial brands can have some variability in grading. I think that’s why I found measuring my favourite sweaters worked well for me!
Yesterday I realized that I hadn’t seen you in a while, and what a delight to find an update this morning! It makes total sense to pause and reset when what you’re doing isn’t bringing the joy. I love your finished sweaters - that plum color looks sooo good on you - and look forward to seeing progress on your current projects. I just finished the Westknits MKAL and am knitting up a scarflet with some of my leftovers. I then have some gift knits that need my attention. 😊 ~ Brenda
Ahh, so nice to have you back! All of your reasoning was super valid, and I've definitely felt the same when it comes to posting knits on Instagram. Happy to have you whenever you feel up for it! I'm also planning a Lumme sweater for this winter, and it'll be my first colourwork project. I definitely went the more traditional route (red MC and white CC), but I'm absolutely obsessed with the palette you chose. Might have to start planning for a second one...
@@highfiberknits I'm curious about the feeling of the wool. Is it scratchy? because I think I'm going to knit the Amy Sweater as well and am interested in this yarn. I'm also wondering about shipping as a fellow Toronto girl! :) thank you!
@@amswimmergreat questions! I would say it feels similar to Sandnes farm peer Gynt or knitting for olive heavy merino, if you have ever used either of those, but closer to the scratchier end of the two. For shipping, I usually try to order enough from knit picks to reach the free shipping threshold, so I will try to plan my projects accordingly. Shipping time is usually within a week.
Good for you for taking a break and focusing on yourself! And thank you for sharing your GORGEOUS Amy sweater. I have a sweater quantity of yarn on hand and was debating between several different turtleneck patterns until I saw your beautiful FO on Instagram and it completely sold me! Can't wait to cast it on and I hope it turns out half as nice as yours!
so nice to hear back from you, with this new perspective of showing up when you genuinely want to be present! Just a fantastic episode with a great energy. Your lumme is gonna be epic!
welcome back! i prefer podcasts where people post when they want to, not because they feel like they have to. Hope you are settling in to the new place. The Eun sweater looks beautiful, I love the split hem, but for me the most eye-catching detail is the ribbed raglan detail.
Welcome back, Emily! Hood for you for taking some time for yourself!! I’m truly obsessed with your Amy Sweater and might have to recreate it for myself!!
What a wonderful episode! I've missed your podcasts, so this is a bright spot in my day! I love the colors you chose for your Lumme and I really love the purple sweater you are wearing! Just stunning on you! Can't wait for your next episode! Congrats on the new job and the move! Hugs from Texas!
Hi Emily, nice to see you. I am knitting a basic cardigan to fit into my wardrobe. The color happens to be the same blue as your slip over. Mine will be paired with a skirt made from IKEA fabric. Enjoy.
Welcome back! I actually like a more spread out posting schedule to see more progress and have more things to talk about. Weekly seems insane. I appreciate the time and love you put into these podcasts, and am happy to follow along with whatever works for you at this stage of your life. ❤
Happy to see you back! I'm kind of obsessed with the kfo poppy blue colourway, so it'll be really fun seeing your slipover worked up. Oh and also, your Amy Sweater is absolutely gorgeous! I wasn't a fan of that pattern myself, but the version you did in that Knit Picks yarn is starting to sway me
I've been working on the Snow Crocus by Midori Hirose in a undyed cream color! The cables are really fun and surprisingly easy. I'm hoping to finish before a trip out to rainy Seattle this November. Hoping to look cozy and coastal, haha!
I was so happy to see you podcasting again. I was wondering, whether you were alright. So I hope you find a good way for yourself to enjoy podcasting. I will wait patiently no matter, if it takes weeks or month between episodes.
I knit the Oban Sweater using a gorgeous colour in Wool Of The Andes, but I never wear it because it is SO. DARN. ITCHY. Have you had any problem with that?
The color selection is SO good! I usually wear a higher neck t shirt or a mock neck sleeveless top underneath, and I haven’t had an issue with comfort yet. I think the super oversized nature of the garment helps keep the fabric off my body as well!

Hello Emily I did the Eun sweater and I had problems with the hem ( rib ) . Did you keep the same size of needles ? Thank you
I kept the same needle size! The yarn choice may impact how tidy the ribbing ends up looking, but blocking really helped mine!
