Hamas claims a victory in bringing down the government of Israel. Netanyahu can be removed after Victory but not before.
He seems to be conflating a jewish state with a religious state...which is odd considering he is smarter than that. A Jewish state means a Jewish majority state, not religious state. He knows this. When it ceases to be majority Jewish it will also cease to be democratic.

Very interesting ! As a non Jew , I cant understand why those 350,000 Yeshiva Students who live in Israel , feel they can live in Israel without contributing, like all other young Israelis . If they don't want to actually fight , I believe they must give the same 3 years or so , doing farm work or whatever the state needs at the time ! I went to Israel for the first 4 months of this year and worked on a Kibbutz as a volunteer fruit picker . The Kibbutz was on the Lebanese border , there was rockets every day ! but I didn't really feel I was in any big danger ( iron dome ) Point being , most days it was just me and an Israeli guy ( now my good friend ) Whole crops went to waste because there were no workers ! These Yeshiva Students must contribute like everybody else ! ( Dear friends of Israel, apart from the obvious, I'm so glad I went to Israel and made some great new friends) ! I highly recommend to all non Jews to go to Israel and work on a Kibbutz! I promise you, you will have a great time and valuable experience !
The way the army is structured today, it is not just an army, but an educational institution. That institution has statistically shown itself effective at distancing Jews from Judaism. The same forces that leverage the army for great reshapings of Israeli society, would do the same for other contribution frameworks. You're essentially saying Judaism shouldn't matter that much, something to which the Haredim are diametrically opposed.

I love how when he speaks on things he is sure of he is really strong in what he has to say and confident. But when he speaks on things more on personal views, you can see humility which is warming to see. I actually thought he was bit arrogant when i first heard one of his lectures before, but i think i may have be mistaken in that he was actually confident about his history, not arrogance. Ive been following Haviv for a while now, and I think he has a brilliant mind. I appreciate in particular his great efforts to educate Israelis and Jews in the diaspora about the history that has lead to the current reality of the Jewish people inside and outside of the state of Israel, and to help people decontextualize their identity away from silly abstractions that treat us like characters in someone else’s fantasy about us. However, I do have some criticisms. These criticisms are directed less towards Haviv himself than the platforms on which he speaks. And this criticism extends to the way that many other relevant, bright public speakers are platformed. We are living in a time of major transition in global politics and culture, and the world is headed towards another one of its periodic convulsions that take place at predictable intervals throughout human history. A lot of what Haviv says is thoughtful and takes into account a great many factors about Israeli society, but it fails to address the degree of chaos and unpredictability that Jews face in and out of Israel, as well as the multitude of variables at play in geopolitics broadly speaking. He still speaks about a two state solution as if it’s a precise mathematical equation, that makes sense, while a “one-state solution” is mathematically wrong. The reality is that any “solution” to the so-called “Palestinian-Israeli” conflict is so far off in the future that the realities and variables in Israeli and diaspora Jewish life will be completely different than what they are at the present moment. I would like to see more public intellectuals like Haviv be subjected to competing visions of the future (and interpretations of the present) such that the public can be exposed to a deeper conversation about what is possible or probable in the future. The bottom line is that none of the models work anymore, and as soon as we can at least acknowledge that fact, the sooner we can start using our imagination and creativity to constructively change the conversation. If what I’m saying sounds vague, that’s precisely the point. I’m not advocating for an ideology. I’m advocating for an acknowledgment that the models are broken and that people like Haviv need to engage with other intellectual leaders to start considering new models within an evolving paradigm. Maybe these conversations need to remain behind closed doors for the time being, but they need to happen one way or another. We’ve solved bigger problems as a people in the past, and I’m confident that we will solve the many crises we currently face. But we have to get to work.

FWIW, neuroscience has proved that being objective, for us humans, is biologically impossible. The brain actually edits our memories during sleep when it changes short term memories to long term memories. We have no conscious control over this editing. It's why you can be at an event with someone, & the two of you remember it differently. Lawyers have known since forever that no two witnesses ever tell the same story, no matter how bright or how honest each may be. Your demand that journalists "report facts" is unrealistic in the light of all of this. None of us surmounts being human. So the next best thing is to be able to understand opposing points of view; to see how others come to opposing opinions, even when you disagree w them. I think this guy is strong in doing just that. MRI scans can track if a neuron is firing or not, so they make metaphors w computers & call the info kilobyts. Like a juicy metaphor they have is the conscious mind processes about 66 kilobytes of info per sec while the subconscious processes about 66 million kilobytes per second; but the metaphor falls short. It makes it seem like "on" or "off" is all a brain neuron does, which ignores that they've found over 5,000 kinds of brain cells, & ignores how hormones (the endocrine system) affects the brain. Still, learning about things they have discovered (like the editing of memories when we sleep) is real interesting.

Regarding leadership: in Australia we haven't had a good, strong leader for many years. There are good people in government but they don't have the power to influence or make changes. I think this is common in many countries.
Great discussion but the answer on the question of the continued utility of Zionism misses the point,. I think we should stop using the term “Zionism” for any purposes other than to describe the historic movement to build a polity for the Jewish nation in the holy land. Since that has been done and the state exists, we should retire the term. Its continued use suggests that Israel is an abstraction, an idea that you can agree or disagree with. My theory as to why Iran is obsessed with Israel, and also why Oct. 7 was perpetrated, is this is a power struggle over who dominates the Middle-East; Iran and its proxies on one side, and Israel and Saudi Arabia on the other. Oct 7 was done to scuttle the Abraham accords, a raproachment between Israel and the Saudis. It's not as if the Saudis love Israel, but they need their expertise and technology to deter Iran. If Oct. 7 hadn't hapenned, Israel would've continued its expansion in the West Bank and the Palestinians would have been left out and forgotten. The Middle-East might have even settled down somewhat.

@@davidk2471Even without being Israeli I can give you some reasons. 1. The entire Israeli defence system was completely unprepared on Oct 7. Imagine the Israeli air force went to the breached fence quickly. Hamas invaders would have been killed before most of the killing began. There would have been no hostages. It would have taken a couple of minutes for planes to get there, & a couple of hours for tanks to get there, because Israel is small. 2. There were Israeli soldier girls who wore hijabs who spied in Gaza. They knew something was brewing & their warnings were ignored. Why? Their very purpose in Gaza was to look for signs of military preparations. Why were their warnings ignored? Unless Netanyahu proves himself there will be investigations in these matters once the war ends. He has already set himself up to fail Israel in his promises because he promises both the defeat of Hamas & the rescue of the hostages. It is a no-brainer that fulfilling both is mutually exclusive. Sinwar will keep a group of hostages as his own personal human shields to the very end, & will kill them if the IDF gets close, the way they did recently. A great leader would prepare his people that achieving both goals would be almost impossible, but he would try. Instead Netanyahu lies that he will do both, adding more impossible promises to impossible promises he has made down the years.

But given his rhetorical questions, (such as: why is HAMAS destroying Gaza, why is Iran interested in Israel when it has no border with Israel), reveals an utter lack of understanding of Islam and compels the conclusion that he never read the Koran. If so, given that little Israel is surrounded by 22 Muslim states and over 400 million muslims, this is incredibly incompetent of him. And, when he claims that he does not understand how could Sinwar have launched 10-7 when there must have been other sane persons in the organization, who are presumably not sociopathic or psychopathic, and could of prevented it, shows a colossal idiocy on his part. For they are all extreme Muslims on a Jihad to establish the supremacy of Islam over Israel. I've heard him address the topics you'd prefer hearing about, in other videos. If you don’t realize this, go watch his interview with The Free Press from March 21st “The Gathering Storm”, also available on TH-cam, where he dives deep into the nuances of the different elements of Islam at play within the wider regional conflict.
Listen to the interview again, he mentions these questions as as a criticism of international journalists who do not bother to deeply understand the politics and ideology of the parties involved, and who do not bother asking these questions.

Haviv is always so intelligent and interesting to listen to. I wish his disdain for Israel’s government wasn’t so apparent though, especially because the majority of Israelis do support Netanyahu. So when people complain about Netanyahu, it’s ultimately disparaging the majority of everyday Israelis who believe he is the most capable leader we have. This kind of disdain is what is driving the wedge. Also, why should Israeli politicians show up in places where they will get brutally heckled? No one should be subjected to that, and haviv knows perfectly well that’s what would happen. These politicians are even heckled overseas by that crowd.
Most Israelis do not support Netanyahu, he has 30% support right now. And many of those who do "support" hi, say that they don't approve of how he's handling things, but don't think there's a better option out there. In my opinion he gives this irresponsible, authoritarian, corrupt government much more respect than they deserve, they are dragging Israel into the abyss.

That said, wisdom does not mean his analysis takes into consideration political realities that he seems to ignore. What are the optics of removing Netanyahu after Oct 7. Hamas claims a victory in bringing down the government of Israel. Netanyahu can be removed after Victory but not before.
He seems to be conflating a jewish state with a religious state...which is odd considering he is smarter than that. A Jewish state means a Jewish majority state, not religious state. He knows this. When it ceases to be majority Jewish it will also cease to be democratic.

Very interesting ! As a non Jew , I cant understand why those 350,000 Yeshiva Students who live in Israel , feel they can live in Israel without contributing, like all other young Israelis . If they don't want to actually fight , I believe they must give the same 3 years or so , doing farm work or whatever the state needs at the time ! I went to Israel for the first 4 months of this year and worked on a Kibbutz as a volunteer fruit picker . The Kibbutz was on the Lebanese border , there was rockets every day ! but I didn't really feel I was in any big danger ( iron dome )
Point being , most days it was just me and an Israeli guy ( now my good friend ) Whole crops went to waste because there were no workers ! These Yeshiva Students must contribute like everybody else ! ( Dear friends of Israel, apart from the obvious, I'm so glad I went to Israel and made some great new friends) ! I highly recommend to all non Jews to go to Israel and work on a Kibbutz! I promise you, you will have a great time and valuable experience !
The way the army is structured today, it is not just an army, but an educational institution. That institution has statistically shown itself effective at distancing Jews from Judaism. The same forces that leverage the army for great reshapings of Israeli society, would do the same for other contribution frameworks.

I love how when he speaks on things he is sure of he is really strong in what he has to say and confident. But when he speaks on things more on personal views, you can see humility which is warming to see. I actually thought he was bit arrogant when i first heard one of his lectures before, but i think i may have be mistaken in that he was actually confident about his history, not arrogance. I also thought it was very wise what he was asked about 'hope and fear' and he replied with" isreals hopes have already been realised " your not hoping for you something you already have" that was a very good answer.

Ive been following Haviv for a while now, and I think he has a brilliant mind. I appreciate in particular his great efforts to educate Israelis and Jews in the diaspora about the history that has lead to the current reality of the Jewish people inside and outside of the state of Israel, and to help people decontextualize their identity away from silly abstractions that treat us like characters in someone else’s fantasy about us. However, I do have some criticisms. These criticisms are directed less towards Haviv himself than the platforms on which he speaks. And this criticism extends to the way that many other relevant, bright public speakers are platformed.
We are living in a time of major transition in global politics and culture, and the world is headed towards another one of its periodic convulsions that take place at predictable intervals throughout human history. A lot of what Haviv says is thoughtful and takes into account a great many factors about Israeli society, but it fails to address the degree of chaos and unpredictability that Jews face in and out of Israel, as well as the multitude of variables at play in geopolitics broadly speaking. He still speaks about a two state solution as if it’s a precise mathematical equation, that makes sense, while a “one-state solution” is mathematically wrong. The reality is that any “solution” to the so-called “Palestinian-Israeli” conflict is so far off in the future that the realities and variables in Israeli and diaspora Jewish life will be completely different than what they are at the present moment. I would like to see more public intellectuals like Haviv be subjected to competing visions of the future (and interpretations of the present) such that the public can be exposed to a deeper conversation about what is possible or probable in the future. The bottom line is that none of the models work anymore, and as soon as we can at least acknowledge that fact, the sooner we can start using our imagination and creativity to constructively change the conversation. If what I’m saying sounds vague, that’s precisely the point. I’m not advocating for an ideology. I’m advocating for an acknowledgment that the models are broken and that people like Haviv need to engage with other intellectual leaders to start considering new models within an evolving paradigm. Maybe these conversations need to remain behind closed doors for the time being, but they need to happen one way or another. We’ve solved bigger problems as a people in the past, and I’m confident that we will solve the many crises we currently face. But we have to get to work.

The brain actually edits our memories during sleep when it changes short term memories to long term memories. We have no conscious control over this editing. It's why you can be at an event with someone, & the two of you remember it differently.
Lawyers have known since forever that no two witnesses ever tell the same story, no matter how bright or how honest each may be.
Your demand that journalists "report facts" is unrealistic in the light of all of this. None of us surmounts being human.
So the next best thing is to be able to understand opposing points of view; to see how others come to opposing opinions, even when you disagree w them.

MRI scans can track if a neuron is firing or not, so they make metaphors w computers & call the info kilobyts. Like a juicy metaphor they have is the conscious mind processes about 66 kilobytes of info per sec while the subconscious processes about 66 million kilobytes per second; but the metaphor falls short. It makes it seem like "on" or "off" is all a brain neuron does, which ignores that they've found over 5,000 kinds of brain cells, & ignores how hormones (the endocrine system) affects the brain. Still, learning about things they have discovered (like the editing of memories when we sleep) is real interesting.

My theory as to why Iran is obsessed with Israel, and also why Oct. 7 was perpetrated, is this is a power struggle over who dominates the Middle-East; Iran and its proxies on one side, and Israel and Saudi Arabia on the other. Oct 7 was done to scuttle the Abraham accords, a raproachment between Israel and the Saudis. It's not as if the Saudis love Israel, but they need their expertise and technology to deter Iran. If Oct. 7 hadn't hapenned, Israel would've continued its expansion in the West Bank and the Palestinians would have been left out and forgotten. The Middle-East might have even settled down somewhat.

@@davidk2471Even without being Israeli I can give you some reasons.
1. The entire Israeli defence system was completely unprepared on Oct 7. Imagine the Israeli air force went to the breached fence quickly. Hamas invaders would have been killed before most of the killing began. There would have been no hostages. It would have taken a couple of minutes for planes to get there, & a couple of hours for tanks to get there, because Israel is small.
2. There were Israeli soldier girls who wore hijabs who spied in Gaza. They knew something was brewing & their warnings were ignored. Why? Their very purpose in Gaza was to look for signs of military preparations. Why were their warnings ignored?
Unless Netanyahu proves himself there will be investigations in these matters once the war ends. He has already set himself up to fail Israel in his promises because he promises both the defeat of Hamas & the rescue of the hostages. It is a no-brainer that fulfilling both is mutually exclusive. Sinwar will keep a group of hostages as his own personal human shields to the very end, & will kill them if the IDF gets close, the way they did recently. A great leader would prepare his people that achieving both goals would be almost impossible, but he would try. Instead Netanyahu lies that he will do both, adding more impossible promises to impossible promises he has made down the years.
For those of you who claim that Israel is the aggressor, remember Israel pulled out of Gaza in 2006 and also from Lebanon
but it didn't really, it still controlled the sea, air and borders and continuously committed aggressive incursions and wars..

Until this interview I respected Haviv Rettig Gur. But given his rhetorical questions, (such as: why is HAMAS destroying Gaza, why is Iran interested in Israel when it has no border with Israel), reveals an utter lack of understanding of Islam and compels the conclusion that he never read the Koran. If so, given that little Israel is surrounded by 22 Muslim states and over 400 million muslims, this is incredibly
incompetent of him. And, when he claims that he does not understand how could Sinwar have launched 10-7 when there must have been other sane persons in the organization, who are presumably not sociopathic or psychopathic, and could of prevented it, shows a
colossal idiocy on his part. For they are all extreme Muslims on a Jihad to establish the supremacy of Islam over Israel. Its a 1400 year religious war ordered in the Koran (i.e. the word and directive of Allah himself devoid of any morality). If that alone is not sufficiently sociopathic, I don't know what is. I think he takes it for granted that listeners have the overview you spell out in detail.
The rhetorical nature of the questions led me to think that Gur actually does know the enemy really well. He was just trying to show how incurious western journalists are that they do not notice these seeming incongruencies and ask more questions about it.
The podcaster chose 18 specific questions, & most of them were about Israelis' relationships w each other & w their government & history. I've heard him address the topics you'd prefer hearing about, in other videos. He did hint at your preferred themes early on with " . . . big religious ideologies that come for you because you play some role in a big moral historical cartoon in their own heads . . . . Welcome to Jewish history." (@ 1:30; that could apply to Islam & to Nazi thinking . . . .)

Sorry but Haviv is way more knowledgeable about Islam than your caricature of him here. If you don’t realize this, go watch his interview with The Free Press from March 21st “The Gathering Storm”, also available on TH-cam, where he dives deep into the nuances of the different elements of Islam at play within the wider regional conflict.
Listen to the interview again, he mentions these questions as as a criticism of international journalists who do not bother to deeply understand the politics and ideology of the parties involved, and who do not bother asking these questions.

Haviv is always so intelligent and interesting to listen to. I wish his disdain for Israel’s government wasn’t so apparent though, especially because the majority of Israelis do support Netanyahu. So when people complain about Netanyahu, it’s ultimately disparaging the majority of everyday Israelis who believe he is the most capable leader we have. This kind of disdain is what is driving the wedge.
Also, why should Israeli politicians show up in places where they will get brutally heckled? No one should be subjected to that, and haviv knows perfectly well that’s what would happen. These politicians are even heckled overseas by that crowd.
Most Israelis do not support Netanyahu, he has 30% support right now. And many of those who do "support" hi, say that they don't approve of how he's handling things, but don't think there's a better option out there.
In my opinion he gives this irresponsible, authoritarian, corrupt government much more respect than they deserve, they are dragging Israel into the abyss.
When Haviv begins an answer on his religiosity with "There is a G-d..." and is about to launch into an undoubtedly interesting point--and you interrupt him to insist on prodding him into declaring an identity affiliation...you are making a mistake.
Interesting to hear. Unfortunately, however, pretending to be an impartial reporter, Haviv sounds like part of the dividing, a publicity outlet who enjoys the exposure he gets, in the bargain. Despite the enormity of the cost, fortunately, the 'SlamoWoke will fail and the Jihadi effort will boomerang.
