Israel's 9/11: Israel-Hamas War 3 Months On - Astute Assessments and Reasoned Expectations

  • As we enter 2024 and near the end of three months of fighting in response to the massive Hamas terrorist attack of Oct. 7, two expert observers participate in CIE’s 12th weekly webinar on the war: Haviv Rettig Gur, a journalist for The Times of Israel, and Einat Wilf, a former Knesset member and a leading commentator on Zionism and antisemitism. They offer insights into why Israel must fight this war, why media coverage falls short, why Israelis aren't prepared to provide public explanations desired by American Jews, what has held the Palestinians back from pursuing peace, and whether Israel should care about protests on college campuses and foreign capitals. Ken Stein, CIE’s president and an Emory University emeritus professor of Middle East history and political science, moderates the discussion.

Two excellent guests. Each alone would be worthy of attention - having them both together is a real get!
Both are Sabra Israelis who very much understand the American way of thinking and can thus share the Middle Eastern way of thinking to an American audience.

Sadly your website is in Hebrew. Feel free to reply with links to any related or republished content that appears in English. Thank you. I’m interested because I’m committed to anti-terrorism; whether it occurs in West Africa (1,800 terrorist attacks in 2023 alone). Not meaning to distract from what you’ve been through, just contextualising where I fit in as far as groups of supporters of Israel.

Our website (israeled.org) is primarily in English. We have many items in Spanish, Hebrew and other languages, but everything is in English.

Except Israel does get a lot of diaspora support. All Jews are connected in a comceptual but also practical way. The existence of Israel transforms American Jews from being refugees to having chosen to live in the US. But Israel also gets support from the US and from US Jews.

As academic scholars they ve failed to exermine the real causal effect of this conflict. This is not a military solution

One of the best discussions I have heard on the subjects covered.
The term 'Muddle East' is sometimes used to describe the Middle East tragedy.

A bit wordy, but informative. It says that Israel is reflecting on the bigger picture. Also confirms the Jewish refusal to justify it's actions. It needs to learn how to do this! Thank you.

I'm Brazilian and when I hear journalists ask about the children in Gaza the answers may vary but the truth is that Hamas is responsible for the children and not Israel. In fact, Israel tries to minimize the damage to the Palestinians. Eylon Levy is perfect

Not true, study the truth, the history. Have you seen Tantura, the film, for example? What did the occupiers expect?

We need to promote a birthright-esque program for young Christians in America. Let them experience the same amazing biblical fantasy camp that I did as a college freshman on Taglit. Israel’s home to Christianity’s living history yet we dont promote it to non-Jews.

Sir please start by speaking truthfully it was not several thousand Hamas fighters, misleading and fake statements is why we are here, and thanks by misinformation that we are learning more about Israel and Hamas, at your age you should not be giving false information

uh... there were 3,000 hamas members. israelis killed 1500 of the fighters on Oct 7th. this figure doesn't include the number of palestinian civilians who also crossed over that day. they entered in waves and infiltrated 22 settlements. this has been confirmed by numerous outlets. how many people do you think that would take? who are you listening to? Al Jazeera? the news outlet of the totalian Qatari regime who doesn't publish anything without the regime's approval.?

Taking a snapshot of this, i note the anachronistic arguments.. Taking no consideration of the impact of globalisation. It is these thinkers who are buried in the ancient past and failing to understand that religious division today is not what it was centuries ago. The Palestinian resistance is a reaction by nurture not nature. The Israeli state has nurtured/ created the resistance. It is not some naturally occurring attempt at conquest- even the massacre- that was waiting for an excuse to happen. It is a resistance that was forced by years of oppression. Nationalism is just as important a factor as religion in the conflict yet pointedly these commentators refer to Palestine as if it were a homogeneous Muslim Califate: absurd. The strategy here is to justify entire annihilation as a defensive necessity.. More atrocious even than Netanyahu's rhetoric of 'necessary' genocide.
