      Lidar can’t do eye detect more like nose detect, has issues if angled and not on flat tilt, and requires calibration that doesn’t seem to always work. Those are just a few problems I have with the ronin 3D focus. Tech has a long way to go and likely won’t reach Sony or canons AF system. A hybrid of ai with lidar may be beneficial for extremely dark night shots which is the only area lidar makes sense over contrast based.

    We always need to keep in mind that Blackmagic has its roots in live broadcast video, where focus hunting is a mortal sin, and the camera op has a producer chirping in his or her ear calling shots that have to be dialed in quickly and with precision. And on film sets with serious budgets on the line, it’s inexcusable to lose takes because the autofocus decided to drift to a background object. Until you can talk with autofocus, describe the shot in human movement terms, and have it pull perfectly every time, autofocus will not become a meaningful selling point to a lot of camera ops.

    • @FrameVoyager
      @FrameVoyager  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very true! That's why I really think LiDar autofocus is the only really option in the future. Because it doesn't focus hunt, can focus on low light settings, and has a lot more control for the operators. Now that's for film and broadcast, plenty of others would use autofocus in single person shoots. I think that's really the segment that needs it the most

    I've been using Komodo's auto focus for talking head shots and some gimbal work lately. Sure, it's no face only/eye detect Sony/Canon autofocus, but it's surprisingly smooth and 100% usable as long as your detection zone/point is setup appropriately for the shot. I think everyone has been surprised about how good REDs first try at continuous autofocus turned out, especially since they had to figure out the RF stuff. I see no reason Blackmagic couldn't do the same.

      It's not just canon and EF lenses that suck...it's any stills lens being used as a cine lens, unfortunately. Full disclosure, I prefer stills lenses usually BECAUSE they have autofocus, which can be useful, but the same feel they are not. It makes me cringe every time I see a youtube reviewer talking about how awesome the manual focus ring feels on a focus by wire stills lens. I mean, I don't know if they're intentionally spouting BS, or if they're just ignorant to how much better the long, smooth throw of a lens that's also free from breathing is.

    I use lidar for 3d mapping with drones, which is a huge industry. It is definitely the future coupled with AI processing for object detection and tracking. It's not "shooting a laser at the subject." It's shooting hundreds or thousands of lasers and getting individual depth data from everything. It's basically like a cmos sensor except instead of individual pixels it's individual lasers reading depth data instead of color and luminosity data. The stuff being used for the camera world is still a gimicky afterthought, more of a proof of concept, but eventually someone from the 3d world will mate with someone from the camera world and have an amazing baby.

    There are a dozen cinema lens companies out there. BMD does not need to, and probable does not want to, enter that crowded arena. There is the "touch once only" on the camera displays, so that is a concession for new users. There are a lot of new users because BMD sells several types of cameras, some budget priced. They have a huge catalogue of rack mount and modules for studio/live use that no one else caters for. Their quality and performance is in the top 5.

    I don't see the need for autofocus and as long as Arri doesn't have it I don't believe they will. Also cameras in their price range that do have auto focus is pretty clunky and bad from what I read. I don't think they'd waste money on a feature that wouldn't yield real world usability. The 4K and 6K are in their own right great cameras but they are missing some basic things like weather sealng. If they're willing to cut corners on things like that I don't see auto focus in the foreseeable future

    unpopular opinion but Nikon and BM kinda have good relation. Nikon was first to use B-Raw in their Mirrorless cameras and Blackmagic is first to support N-Raw. on Reddit there was a discussion going on about BM and Nikon relation and what they can do. recent news about Nikon future road map suggest Nikon also want to focus on video and with having its own N-Raw codec we can say they are kinda serious and maybe even following BM in this case. BM and Nikon can take their relation to next level and have collaboration to help each other to improve their cameras. Nikon can take some help from BM for Video/Cinema Mirrorless cameras and it can help BM for Video AF and even IBIS. and BM doesn't need to develop and manufacture their own lens mount and lenses they can partner with Nikon to use Z mount. both companies can help eachother in many ways to take own more shares of Mirrorless and Cinema camera market. its upto BM what direction they wanted to go. but i think its possible for them to partner with Nikon if they wan to.

Z mount have largest diameter and minimum flange distance so you can literally adapt any lens on it. so it will be interesting to ask BM if there is any possibility for them to use lens mount with only 16mm diameter flange distance. using Z mount is more realistic.

      @victorngfilms 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Which makes sense. Camera assistants can't blame Blackmagic if they are out of work! I can understand that it's not Blackmagic priority to offer image stabilisation and continuous autofocus. Nowadays people can use a gimbal or hire a Steadicam operator and camera assistant for focusing. However people can still argue that low budget independent projects can't afford these sorts of crews. Then again, I doubt the Blackmagic Cameras price would be as low as it is if the camera does offer what other camera manufacturers offer. It's the debate of spending more money on camera to do everything or spend it on collaboration with other people. I currently own the Ursa Min Pro, Pocket 4K and recently bought the gh6. For small gigs that really have no budget, gh6 would be my go to camera because it's relatively cheaper, packs with features and similar colour science to Blackmagic. So I understand why people want to buy a camera that does everything, because it's convenient!

    Now here's a question that has formed over the course of the video: Who is the target audience of Blackmagicdesign? In my opinion it certainly isn't the broad consumer market. Imagine seeing an EOS 2000D and a Pocket 4k next to each other. I know that that isn't really a compareable pricebracket, but that speaks all the more for another target: prosumers/indie-filmmakers.
    For homevideo and youtube-vlogs autofocus is really helpful, but if you go deeper than that, manual focus is definitely the way to go. You have much much more control over the images you create, but you need to be able to use it correctly. People invested in filmmaking are (most probably) willing to learn how to focus manually, but you cannot expect the same from anyone else, really.
    So in my personal opinion, I think that Blackmagic should ditch internal autofocus completely and provide it for example through an external lidar-system.
    People who buy Blackmagic cameras have a tendency to rig (the shit out of) their cameras, so "one more module shouldn't hurt". Provided they want autofocus in the first place.
    Also: Switching off autofocus on an electronically controlled lens isn't comparible to a fully manual lens, I think.
    Vintage lenses (for example), that are only glass and metal, are SO much more responsive than anything with internal focusingmotors.
    There is always this lag to you rotating the focuswheel and the camera responding. ew, just ew.
    So to conclude:
    No, I don't want autofocus on Blackmagic cameras. Those "wasted" resources could be used to work on other things.
    Rather than having a shitty autofocus system, I'd MUCH rather hand of the focuspulling to a green 1st AC, than being frustrated by the "wonders of modern technology".
    Of course you don't alyways have a 1st AC on hand, but in that case, pulling focus yourself is (probably) the best option.

    • @blogpolyarnika
      @blogpolyarnika 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@FrameVoyager Some cameras are made for movies, others for blogs, others for television. Each standard is determined not only by the codec and picture quality, but above all by the operating conditions. The greatest misconception of novice videomakers is the pursuit of a universal camera that is suitable for shooting movies, youtube videos and television. A cameraman doesn't need autofocus, or a flip out screen, or sensor stabilization, or any unnecessary tab in the menu at all. Ask the cinematographer about focus. Just like a blogger doesn't need a RAW codec. A TV cameraman needs a reliable device with good sound, a strong battery, and preferably one monolithic piece.
      Shooting movies is a long and painstaking process, involving many people, that is usually well thought out in advance. Automatic focus is needed when there is no time or an experienced cameraman, or to shoot special shots. If you need autofocus, look to other brands that specialize in replacing human involvement in video shooting. If you're uncomfortable with manual focus, you're probably not shooting movies.
      If you imagine automatic Alexa, I assure you, the material from such a camera will be very similar to the material shot on the CANON RC5 or something like that. It is in the "manual gear" that the essence of the concept of "cinematic" is found.

    • @FrameVoyager
      @FrameVoyager  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@blogpolyarnika For sure! And I'm not arguing for Autofocus in cameras because I never use AF myself. But even in cinema, automated gear is slowly being worked into productions. With a LOT more care on when exactly to implement it for sure, but without some advances in automation certain movies would be impossible.
      When I talk about LIDAR autofocus as well, I almost see it more as an assistant to a focus puller where you could have a fully automatic setup if you wanted but you could also bring it down and have it as more of an assistant or something used in tricky filming environments. The nice thing with Lidar tech is you could automate an Alexa, but you wouldn't change anything internally on an Alexa so it wouldn't end up being like a cannon RC5. Lidar tech also removes focus hunting and doesn't have issues staying focused in lowlight conditions and it works with any lens.
      In all this not saying everything should always be automated. But I think there are situations where you could utilize automated tech to help you get things not possible through manual means. Not for every shot or the majority of a film. I'm always for more options in the creative process if it helps me achieve the goal rather than being stuck in some kind of box of what is considered "The way" things are supposed to be done.
      But I agree on the sentiment of a universal camera. You buy the tools that help you accomplish what you're trying to do!

      @@FrameVoyager, thanks for the great conversation and reason to talk about important things ;).
      I totally agree! When a creative idea or technical conditions require automation, it is certainly not necessary to shy away from new technological solutions. But these will always be rather unique cases that are uniquely solved by the intelligence and capabilities of the engineers on the set. This is why the film device does not have to be perfect. Because perfect is subjective. My perfect rig won't be perfect for you. The rig I use to shoot one movie won't be perfect for my other movie.
      That's why BM products are masterpieces. They give you the foundation, they inspire you to search and experiment, they give you the most important things: a great picture, a unique сodak and the best user interface on Earth for the affordable price. The rest: focusing devices, batteries, stabilizers, lenses - that's the creative choice of the cinematographer. Choices that some brands (looking to sell their vision of the perfect rig) take away from the creators.

      @@blogpolyarnika no problem! I actually love getting to have these conversations even if I don't agree 💯 with everyone.
      Usually you have convos like this and people just start calling you unprofessional 😂 but totally agree with everything you just said! I've always been big into learning film basics and then building and experimenting after you've grounded yourself in tried and true methods.

    I'm not sure it's accurate to say that lack of autofocus hasn't stopped people from buying their cameras. It's stopped me and I know a lot of people who didnt go with black magic because of lack of AF. They would sell a lot more cameras if they had it.

      Well right, I mean more of who their target market was with these cameras to start with. I think that's grown more so then they could have hoped for. As a result, more people want autofocus in the cameras!

      @@floreamariussorin8652 while I agree whole heatedly that manual for films makes total sense especially for storytellers. I think there is always a problem when people will just laugh or make fun of creatives trying something new out. If the tool works and you can get it to do what it needs to do and it makes your job easier? 🤷‍♂️
      But I agree, AF not where it needs to be yet. But I think LiDar could fix a lot of issues you're talking about. Think about ai presets that could mimic human manual focus. I think that's where we're headed

      @@floreamariussorin8652 you’re comparing apples to oranges here. Big budget films with large crews vs black magic users. Black magic users are usually doing lower budget small crew films or documentary work where it would absolutely be handy to have the camera pull focus for you. Autofocus is NOT just for vloggers. Wedding film makers, commercial work and gimbal use can all benefit from it and no ones going to laugh at them for using it. No one cares as long as you’re getting great shots.
