great video but that only produces 0.5 volts dc and it drops to 0.35 when you load it with your dc motor. Try replacing the copper and aluminium with lead and try filling the jar with sulfuric acid

But i will just say that to power a 10watts LED light this setup is not enough you need something much bigger, about running time is anybody's guess.

This is a good science project idea for a high school kid. I don't think the video is implying free energy idea but just opening your mind to more ideas than what is offered to us by corporations. The best idea is still elimination of fossil fuel by super advanced methods of separating water atoms most efficiently and harvesting the excess energy from the heat hydrogen and oxygen can generate by burning it. If you could get 5 times energy than consumed, using advanced high technology electronics, running a generator that produces electricity used to separate water atoms to use as fuel for a steam turbine which could not only generate electricity to recharge deep cycle batteries, but also hot water for your household needs.
i did the same experiments. only difficulty is that the corrosion products on the aluminum foil will create high resistance with in few hours and will make the cell almost dead. frequent cleaning of the Al plate is necessary

Electricity is basically the movement of electrons. In this case salt water is the carrier of electrons from the aluminium to copper. The solution works until there are no more electrons to travel from the aluminium to the copper.

The soda can is being used as a terminal to connect to the water and the wire, so yes it needs to be stripped of any paint. The can doesn't need to be unopened or empty, though leaving it empty would probably benefit the experiment (and yourself).

The yellow device is a multimeter. It shows there is voltage being generated by the salt water.
