When I was a kid I never really appreciated just how deep and thought-provoking this conversation was. Supergirl 1984 is the gift that keeps on giving.
I read one of the producers felt Helen Slater was miscast as Supergirl and Brooke Shields should've been cast instead. Helen Slater was *perfect* as Kara - she only deserved a better movie with a decent plotline.
Brilliant writing and acting!👍👍👏👏👏 I haven't seen this movie in its entirety in a long time. But this scene alone makes it definitely superior to e.g. Superman III (which I've always found very entertaining actually) and the vast majority of superhero movies of nowadays. And it eerily mirrors Helen Slater's own journey as an inexperienced actress: she's starring opposite such legendary actors as Peter O'Toole and Faye Dunaway and bravely carries the movie on her young shoulders.
This movie WAS pretty good, all things considered. The plot is cheesy and the special effects leave a lot to be desired, but Helen Slater did a creditable job in her first movie role, and Peter O'Toole . . well, he was Peter O'Toole. It's not going to win any Oscars, but back in the 80's it was an entertaining way to spend a few hours at a movie theatre, and that's good enough for me.
A movie doesn't have to be absolutely mind-blowing to be good. I wouldn't even call Supergirl good, but it's entertaining and very charming, and it has that sparkly 80s soft glossy look to it and the score is fantastic too. Plus, Helen Slater is very endearing in the lead role. It's a slice of good innocent fun.

1:07 I'm quite sure that was a smile, chuckle or smirk when she said "don't laugh at me, Zaltar." Maybe it was the silly sounding name. She looks up and to the left, towards the back of his head. Breaking eye contact.
So if we take the Richard Donner, cut of Superman two as the definitive version of that movie, and ignore the Richard Lester version wouldn’t Zod, Ursa and Non still be in the Phantom zone, Superman rewound time at the end of that movie (yes, the iconic rewind in the planet scene from the original was supposed to be in 2)
Zaltar was a genius scientist who built Argo city. I'm sure that building a small house in the ground and fermenting some booze would be child's play to him.
don't forget that zaltar exiled himself to the phantom zone. it's possible that he had small luggage with him like some tools, to make a shelter in the phantom zone?
We could die trying. We won’t. Yea. He will. Never showing remorse for the people you coax into killings themselves just so you can do what you want to do
This is such an odd scene. A ‘human’ (Peter O’Toole) is in the Phantom Zone wearing a filthy cotton/wool blend sweater and khaki pants, talking to a Kryptonian who’s been living on his home world of Earth for the past 15 years.
Umm . . . Peter O'Toole plays Zoltar, the scientist from Argo City who was banished to the Phantom Zone for losing the Omegahedron that sustained life in all of Argo City. Helen Slater plays Kara, the teenager who decides to go after the lost Omegahedron. You need to watch the first bit of the film to understand what it's all about.
He's Kryptonian too you idiot. Argo city built its own unique culture more akin to new age design rather than the stark icy Krypton we saw in Superman. I mean, how many sub-cultures are on Earth, and how many of them are 100% identical?
@Dave Thompson Probably because she's a young girl which is why she's called "Supergirl" and I think Helen Slater was either 20, 21, or 22 during this movie.

she captured the spirit of the character, kara never gives up hope
Helen Slater is a wonderful actress.
What a cool, creepy depiction of the Phantom Zone.
I read one of the producers felt Helen Slater was miscast as Supergirl and Brooke Shields should've been cast instead. Helen Slater was *perfect* as Kara - she only deserved a better movie with a decent plotline.
Brooke Shields= Cinematic Kryptonite
100% agree. She managed to maintain her dignity even when the script put her character into ridiculous situations.

Isn’t slater Linda Danvers and Benoist is Kara Danvers?
I'm in the phantom zone in real life. I can relate to Zaltar.
I admire her defiance
When I see him, all I can think of is "Youuuuu Can!!".
Brilliant writing and acting!👍👍👏👏👏

The first 30 seconds were just letting the camera roll on a drunken O’Toole while he chatted about his life.
Ahh boo whoo cry me an a ocean already
She has what few other women have...Sincerity! She was perfect for the role!
Peter O’Toole was thinking, “I was in Lawrence of Arabia! How did I get here??!”
This is so classic
Doesn’t know what a train is then figures out reverse psychology in seconds I love Supergirl
What a good movie

HELEN ET PETER DEUX ACTEURS SPLENDIDES
This is so damn good. 🙌🏼
YOU ARE EVERYTHING AND EVERYTHING IS YOU❤️❤️❤️ Dedicated To MY BEST GIRL FOREVER AND EVER HELEN SLATER!!! MUCH MUCH LOVE!!
Best movie ever made.
Great piece at (0:55), in which Zaltar asked Supergirl: "When's the next train?".

"Have a squirt instead" LMAO
I made the mistake of googling Supergirl and Squirt just to find this scene, note this was not the first result.
helen slater with peter o'toole ....a real fun
“Sometimes, thoughts of my dead wife manifest themselves as trains.”
Peter reminds me of Hugh Laurie
Yeah if only he’d been in some movies… 🙄
Peter O'Toole is very British and very drunk in this scene.
Merci pour ce bijou
She was gorgeous back then, wasn't she? It's a terrible movie but I did enjoy seeing inside the phantom zone, it's my favourite part.
She's gorgeous NOW.
His little phantom zone cave doesn't look that bad
It's Supergirl, in The Phantom Zone
She's very theatrical and he's very pissed

Huge plot hole that will never be resolved; unless it goes the comic book route ala the continuation of Burton's Batman movie in said route.
So they have a liquor store in the Phantom Zone? And construction companies to build houses?
Zaltar was a genius scientist who built Argo city. I'm sure that building a small house in the ground and fermenting some booze would be child's play to him.
don't forget that zaltar exiled himself to the phantom zone. it's possible that he had small luggage with him like some tools, to make a shelter in the phantom zone?
He says Phantom Zone but he means Friend Zone.
We could die trying.
We won’t.
Yea. He will. Never showing remorse for the people you coax into killings themselves just so you can do what you want to do

Wha? They’re both Kryptonian. Though it is funny that they dressed O’Toole up in an 80s pullover sweater.

@@Syklonus There is nothing in any fiction anywhere, that is worth calling someone an idiot over. Not knowing something that is fiction is not a loss.
Aren't they both Kryptonians? Both from that underlake / pocket universe city place at the beginning?
Even on earth the phantom zone
DC should make Supergirl new movie if Zack Snyder or Patty Jenkins will direct or not
Muhamad Adry Rosly That’s currently in development
No, keep Snyder away from anything "Super" related. Man of Steel and BvS were absolute dogshit.
@@Syklonus I like Man Of Steel and as for you not liking Bv S DOJ you need to watch the Ultimate Edition. Much better than the theatrical version
What is Peter talking about what is a squirt?
JP use your imagination. lol
Soda
I would love to sit with a drunken Peter O'Toole as he quoted Shakespeare and scolded me on my bad acting!
Was Peter O'Toole drunk in this scene or something?
Yes, He was Always, One of Our Greatest Drunk Actors, He was also an Acting Teacher
This is a retcon of the original Phantom Zone that was in the Reeve films.
It's not a retcon. We're just seeing what's inside for the first, and only time in Earth 789.
A squirt lol
Good thing she didn't find zod
LOL.
@Jairo G General Zod was already dead at this point.
We Are almost there
Alguém pode colocar o filme completo em português..
This scene is too short there is more than this
Why is peter o toole in this movie?
My friends Ashley and Austin look just like Helen Slater
j'aurai adoré revoir merci
How did Zaltar know that Kara was in the Phantom Zone?? Or was he just walking out randomly and stumbled along poor Kara??
Why wasn't she called "Superwoman"?
Because that's a different character.
Because she's a girl
She's mean to be 15.
@Dave Thompson Probably because she's a young girl which is why she's called "Supergirl" and I think Helen Slater was either 20, 21, or 22 during this movie.
Because she's about 15 years old?
imo the phantom zone in the superman/girl movies n series is inside a black hole hence why zaltar said they wud get sucked into a singularity!
Get back on the saddle when you book a train. Haha makes no sense in the matter 😀
The guy is a major Toole. Lol.
Squirt is a good citrus 🍊 beverage on earth that is
The script was horrible but Helen Slater was so perfect as Kara.
The script was good. The dialogue in this scene is Shakespearean compared to the garbage they make today.
