Schumann wrote this in 4 days I think and IMO is one of the greatest pieces for solo piano ever written. Definitely one of the most creative. Anyways, out of the 8 fantasies I think we can pick an artist we find plays each the best. I do...is that allowed?
Recorded in 1991 when András Schiff was about 38. Even then, so young, he was one of the world’s great musicians and pianists. Fills one with awe - the dedication, practice, study, determination, and his empathic interpretations of Schumann. Thank you for this jewel.
Superb interpretarion, far better than his more recent ones( I heard one which is abnormally slow!). Besides, he avoids inserting the five posthumous variations after Etude VI, a very reasonable decision...
@@PhedraBcn : That may have been the case for a little while, but listening to him now in 2022, his spirit has returned to fill him. Audible in everything he plays, but it is a more mature spirit and - I believe - deeper and wiser. I love listening to him, probably more than I do to any other pianist - apart from Elisabeth Leonskaja who is my heroine.
2020 now, and I have listened to the Études played by András Schiff 20 times or more; also to performances by other great pianists. Have to say, though, that it is Schiff’s performance I truly love above all others. For me, his playing, his music-making, are deeply moving in addition to the intelligence with which he performs. Thank you.
I will say something more later. I am just overcome by this performance. I love Schumann's works and love how Mr Schiff understands them totally. Immaculate i performance in every possible way.
25:27 I need more contrast from Schiff here. I feel like he understands Schumann deeply. But knowing his style, this is as much violent as he could muster. It has to be much more unsettling. But the whole Etude Symphoniques were SUBLIME.
Слухати виконання піаніста, музиканта А. Шіффа і отримувати неабияке задоволення, збагачення духовне. Цікава інтерпретація піаніста, надзвичайне туше дає змогу забути усі проблеми, стан війни в Україні 💙💛
2024 now. Haven't changed my opinion even one bit. András Schiff's musicianship has grown and flourished in the many years I've been listening to him. First time was 1988, Melbourne, Australia. I was mesmerised then - and am even more so now, particularly when hearing him play J S Bach. Many thanks for this repeat performance of two great Schumann works.
What is the story of Kriesleriana & what is the significance of repeating “galloping” theme? Very lengthy... played the Etudes on my sr. Recital in music school...loved them!

ThegreatSchiff : I agree. The more I watch and listen to András Schiff, the more I think he makes music with his entire being, his soul. Nothing is kept in reserve. Heard him asked, “Sir Andrâs, what is music to you?” He stopped walking, looked surprised, and then said, “Everything! It’s communication; it’s love. Yes, love.” That about sums him up!
william robertson : You are correct. And some artists feel music is their “job”, while other artists love music with all their soul, seeing it as a gift and a privilege. And these latter artists know full well that it should not ever be a competition.

I used to think Kreisleriana was boring and listless; now I agree with you that it is one of the greatest piano works ever written.

No...thank u..$$$$$$$$$
In what world is 38 young? Most people are married with kids by then
Me encanta como toca el piano.
Anybody knows what place it is where he's playing?

I much prefer the young Schiff. He was fascinating. He has become so meticulous and pécieux that he has kind of lost his spirit and soul. My two cents

A very clean performance. Interesting how Schiff chooses to end the Etudes with a quiet variation.
Caleb Hu : The final Étude that he played, was that perhaps the Posthumous Étude Wo0 6, No. 4? Am unsure, but feel it is a fine ending.
I think Schiff emanates soft and quietness in his playing. Whenever I think of him, it's the first thing that comes to mind: touch and sensitivity.

@@quaver1239 it is supplemental etude # 5 in D flat major.
Wauw, this is.....another level.
48:31 Purely magical. The melodic line, the second voice in tandem, the buildup, the climax and then the pleading 2nd voice. My God😢😢😢

Simply the best. Based also on a profound understanding of German romantic culture and literature, essential for any Schumann interpretation.
Where was this recorded? Germany?
Beautiful rendition of both masterpieces....

Of all interpretations of the études symphoniques, this has to be my favourite

Susan, you can Google Kreisleriana (note spelling, e before i) and read all about it. Fascinating stuff :)
Reposant, serein, aérien, magnifique !!!!
some have considered this the greatest work for the piano ever written.
Which one? There are two works here...
So what!!!
Un genio autentico.

Schumann Symphonique
My favorite Symphonic Etudes No.11,3 ,7,,8!!! One must be a master of pedal and fancy to play 11 convincingly !
And I think Schiff is!
Very interesting, and great interpretation. Thank you !

Certainly Andras has some qualities of Mr Bean while playing Kreisleriana

It's the symphonic etude,op 13, marked "vivace".
Sorry, can't match Cortot!
lapamful Can’t match Arrau either.
Well.. it is almost impossible to match a genius as Cortot, but nonetheless these are still interpretations of great intellect and beauty
