40% divorce rate in Japan is crazy. Westerners tend to have a false image of what Japanese women are like I guess. They are just as self-determined as Western women.

My thoughts is back when people got into arranged marriages there wasn't this idea someone better might come along and you can just divorce and marry someone else. It's this person or no one so you make it work and be grateful for what you have instead of always looking for greener pastures.

Yes social context is important. There's 2 big factors amongst many other factors, to consider first:
      1. Value Systems - should align between a potential husband and wife. It really helps if both have a clear common and higher vision for life they both believe strongly in - together. IE it's bigger than the self. It means you respect this and this in your spouse above yourself and vica-versa: If you cultivate this in the marriage you'll probably respect and deepen your love beyond the initial courtship phase which is emotionally powerful and exciting and stimulating but naturally transitions to the marriage and family phase which is like a lot of things in life, a lot of work and organization to make it work for everyone and share a fulfilling life eg get through the grindy bits of life, enjoy and share the special moments together, not argue over trivial things nor harbour thoughts of fantasy life elsewhere but embrace the life you are living.
      2. The Marriage Joins 2 Families Together - In which the resources of both families can be used to help the couple when they have children so they can work and live and raise children - which is a LOT TO DO in life! Hence all the extra help, guidance and experience and sharing resources. Trying to do it all as a nuclear family alone mostly is punishingly hard in contrast.

I think the 10% is in reference to present day arranged marriages. Not back in the day. Although much rarer than in the past, it still happens in Japan.

Arranged marriages are the only way Japan can increase its birth rate without immigration. In the 1970s, about half of all marriages in Japan were arranged, and as a result, the marriage rate in Japan was over 95% and the birth rate was more than double that of today. Even today, in Muslim countries where arranged marriages are the norm, the birth rate is much higher than in the first world. However, in modern Japan, westernisation has led to free love relationships in most cases. It is a good thing that the Japanese have become freer, but the number of Japanese who choose to remain single for life or are extremely sexually promiscuous has increased. This has undeniably led to a decline in the marriage rate and birth rate. Often when people talk about birth rates, they try to focus on gender equality and working conditions, but that is largely irrelevant because the more Japan and other western countries try to improve them, the lower the birth rate has dropped.

OMIAI (お見合い) doesn't translate as arranged, as it literally means to meet. It's an introduction usually through a common family friend. And people can choose to pursue or refuse based on preferences. Families in high society still have regular social events to introduce sons and daughters to other members of the same social class. They don't call it OMIAI and it's a different format but the purpose is the same.

about the marriage the important thing in the marriage is to let the girl and the guy choose, it's like the guy is the one who choose the girl that he likes/love and wants to marry and then he and his parents go to ask for marriage from the girl and her parents and the girl meets the guy and looks at him and then the girl choose if she want to marry him or not, btw that's the marriage, If the girl wants to choose first she need to give a hint to the guy that she likes/love and wants to marry and she must be sure that the guy really likes/love her and wants to marry her too first. this is so important in the marriage rules too is let the girl and the guy meet each other and look at each other, or it's okay to let them go out on a date drinking coffee/tea/juice, or let them go for a picnic in the park or walk so that they know each other and know if they want to marry and likes/love each other, let them marry and if not, no marriage. the parents should not force their daughter or their son to marry someone they're not okay to marry and that's not marriage.
