People called him a coward & "yellow" (another word for being cowardly) because he never fought back even when bullied. He wanted to honor his promise to his dying father. But just because he didn't fight doesn't mean he can't (or won't if pushed). It is strongly implied that the 3 Gatlin boys raped Becky, not just slapped her around while he was at work. They knew that Tommy wouldn't stand up to them, so they thought they could do whatever they wanted, even that vile act. But going after the one innocent & defenseless person he loved the most was the final straw. As the saying goes, "No more Mr. Nice Guy"
Yes, most of the time you should walk away because most folks are just stupid, but there are rare moments when you have to make a stand, for the ones you love. They actually made a TV movie based on this film. Kenny Rogers is a master story teller, another great one to check out is called "Lucille" (it's got one hell of a catchy chorus that will get you singing along too). 😊

The two times "Everyone considered him the coward of the county" are sung, it's giving very different messages. The first time establishes Tommy's apparent personality, that he is not a confrontational man, apparently impossible to provoke, even through his teens and twenties. I think the real emphasis the second time it's sung is the word 'considered'. They used to consider him a coward, but that's now a statement of the past, not the present. They no longer think he's a coward, because he has proven conclusively that he is not. He went into that fight outnumbered and inexperienced in violence, but even in a public place, those handicaps did not stop him from attaining at least a measure of justice for Becky.
Love Kenny Rogers music from when he was with the First Edition (60's-70's) to his solo career. He was a great story teller in many of his songs like "Coward Of The County" & "The Gambler". He had so many hits "Lady", "Lucille", "Through the Years", "She Believes In Me", "You & I" (written by the Bee Gees) etc. He did a lot of duets such as with Kim Carnes "Don't Fall In Love With A Dreamer", with Sheena Easton "We've Got Tonight" & with Dolly Parton "Islands In The Stream". He also did quite a few duets with Dottie West.

It's a great message. You don't have to fight to be a man, but sometimes you have to fight when you're a man. They got off easy. I guess I am not as nice a guy as Tommy. He let them live, or at least it was implied he did. Then again, it is open.....I dunno now. Huh.
