Hi Britt. Tom T is one of the all time great songwriters. I know you did a song by Jeannie C Reilly called Harper Valley PTA. Tom T wrote that too. The old man he described as an old, grey, black gentleman, meaning an old grey haired man who was black. Oh and the man was picking up the change that Tom T left on the table not a chain. As to watermelon wine. It is a thing. There are quite a few brands that sell it. I think there is a brand called Stella Rosa (or something like that) that might be available (among other places of course) at Target. I'm sure if you google watermelon wine you will find lots of options. For more of Tom T you might try "I Love", and maybe "The Year Clayton Delaney Died". Wishing you and yours a wonderful and Happy Holiday Season. Stay safe and well, and of course beautiful and adorable.

He was such a great guy. My daddy was a truck driver for a company called Valleydale. The pay was not great, enough to keep a family going. They had a dinner once a year for the drivers to award them for safety. Many of those years Tom T Hall came to eat with them and entertain them. He just settled in like an old friend. He brought great joy to hard working men, a great guy.

One of the greatest songs ever written in Country Music History
    Update after watching your reaction:
Johnny Cash told him that drinking makes him “break out”…. Dallas, Fort Worth, windows, doors…. = meaning he gets a bit violent when drinking, so he quit.
The “Old Gray Black Gentleman”= he’s painting a picture of a older gray haired black gentleman.
“Ironside” was an old Raymond Burr Crime Drama television series in the late 60’s / early 70’s
Tom T Hall was a Country Music Legend. His storytelling songs were classic from the start.
    He had
    35 studio albums
    50 singles
8 #1’s (I would have thought more, as he was huge in his day)
This was his final performance at The Country Music Hall Of Fame

The joke about Johnny Cash is drinking makes him break out windows, doors, as Johnny Cash used to smash everything in hotel rooms when he was on drugs. The guy in the song is old, gray(with gray hair) black gentleman. At then end of the song he says "i saw him picking up my change" Tom T Hall also wrote "Haper Valley PTA" He lived to be 85 years old until he committed suicide

Ironsides was a TV show from the mid 1970s starring Raymond Burr . It was a police inspector who had been paralyzed in the line of duty and was confined to a wheelchair. At that time wheelchairs were often made with metal plates on the sides of the chair to help people who had been using them for a long time and suffered from muscle degeneration to sit upright. The chairs were often called iron sided.

Thank you so much for this reaction. I have a wonderful story to share about his kindness.
As a young girl I loved his songs and the stories they told. Mom bought his albums just for me. Then she got tickets to see him at a small local nightclub here in Maryland. I cried, raised a fuss, but since 15 was a far cry from the mandatory 21 minimum age requirement, I couldn't go. However the angel that was Mom did something so loving for me that evening. She had Mr. Hall sign the back of her program for the show and personalize it to me. It simply read:
    'Sandy, Wish you were here.
    Love, Tom T Hall.'
Fast forwarding about 17 years later found me driving to Illinois to see my friends Sawyer Brown perform at the fair with my childhood hero opening for them. I brought my treasured autograph hoping to meet him. My dream came true when I met him that day and showed him my treasure. Since it was a program and had the date of that long ago show, he said he was touched that I had kept it all those years. He then signed it again under his original message with these words and that date:
'We finally meet after all these years. Thanks for being a lifelong fan.
    Love, Tom T. Hall'
    What a thoughtful, endearing man.

My mother and her sisters knew Tom T. Hall before he became famous. He was from Olive Hill, Ky. My mother was from Salt Lick, Ky. There used to be a show house in Salt Lick and he would play there and my mother and her sisters would go see him. He also played on a local radio station and he used to dedicate songs to my mother's young sister Alma. He would tell the audience he was dedicating the song to his "little sugar booger". That's what he called my aunt Alma. My mom and her sisters talked fondly of Tom T. Hall. This song is my favorite.
Tom T. Hall was a story teller like no other. He had a conversation with an old gray-haired black gentleman. The old black man had more wisdom than most of us could ever comprehend. You can tell that in the story Tom T. tells. "Iron Sides" was a television show that was actually called "Iron Side" staring Perry Mason.

I'm an old radio dude and over the years have had a lot of opportunities to sit down with some notable performers. One of the first (In fact, now that I think off it, it was the first) was an evening spent on Tom T. Hall's bus, just chatting with him, and with the members of his back up group, The Storytellers, that included Johnny Rodriquez at that time. I was nervous at first, but they put me immediately at ease, and in the course of the couple of hours I was there, others popped in and out of the bus, including Jim Ed Brown. We talked, "T" sang a little and we even played a few hands of poker. It was like sitting down with family and as relaxing as you think it might be.

One Summer, back in the mid-70s, I was driving some curvy little narrow 2-lane Cascade mountain road in Washington state on my way to the little one-horse western town of Winthrop. One side of the road was a veritable wall of stone. On one of those stones, roughly the size of a basket ball, someone had painted in yellow letters: "Tom T. Hall was here". Now of course I have no idea if Tom T. Hall wrote that but, if he didn't, then I gotta wonder why someone would go to the trouble to do that? It was easy to drive past it and never see it. I only saw it because I just happened to have briefly glanced over at the side of road. Funny how a little momentary blip of an experience can stay with you for a life time. Thanks for sparking that old memory. If you like story songs then Tom T. is the man. He was literally known as "The Storyteller".

Tom T is a legend. There are so many country songs that he either wrote or co-wrote that other country artists have recorded. Some of his songs he did record himself, but a lot of them he had others record, and they made it big with a lot of the songs he wrote.

I was in the Radio business for more than 40 years, many of those as a Country Music Disk Jockey in West Virginia. Tom T Hall had been a DJ for a spell in tiny Spencer WV, writing songs, looking for his break. Like you, Britt, I love a good story teller. Newsmen like Paul Harvey, Comedians Like Red Skelton and Entertainers like Tennessee Ernie Ford. But one of the best was Tom T Hall. I remember well the first time I played Watermelon Wine on the air and it didn't take long to light up the phone lines...which in the the early 70s was akin to the "Likes" of TH-cam. I recommend that you pull up a lyric sheet of one of his songs and follow along as you listen. You'll laugh and cry and your cheeks will know you've been smilin'. There's always a Good Time spent with "The Storyteller", Tom T Hall. Great post, Britt.

The line was " As I left for my room I saw him picking up my change." Tom T. was a master storyteller. " A week in a county jail" is freaking hilarious, and having driven across the country many times... it's pretty damned accurate.

God bless you, Britt. You ARE a country girl at heart. Its no coincidence Toms nickname WAS " the Ole Storyteller " He has songs that make you laugh and some will make you cry. " I Love " is one my Dad played with his band. " Faster Horses " and " Country is " are great songs. " Country Is " pretty much sums what it like to simply be Country. I agree whole heartedly with this song. Everybody knows Uncle Rick loves his dogs, his wine and you gotta love the babies. They're the best people on earth. You're right up there too,Lovely. ✌️❤️ from Ky.

The first song i ever heard from Tom T Hall was ballad of a switchblade knife. It was a hoot. I even ask the radio station at the time to give a heads up just before they would play it so I could record it off the radio. I am dating myself with that, chuckling. You cannot go wrong with anything sung by Tom T.

A "gray black man" is a gray-haired black man. 'Ironsides' was a TV show about a lawyer in a wheelchair. P.S.- most ALL entertainers of our Era (I'm 58) were just that, entertainers. They could tell a joke, sing, play, tell stories, etc... no auto-tune, just talent
