As I sit here hunkered down in the middle of a hurricane with my two rescues laughing my butt off, I started to cry remembering my Tucker. I rescued him from the humane society shortly after my german shepherd passed away, and he was exactly like bo, nonstop energy, took him to the training, and they asked me to stop bringing him, because he was scaring the other dogs, and people. I thought he needed to release some of that energy, so I took him to this large fenced in dog park, and watched in horror how he just mowed over all the dogs he came in contact with. I would wait until most of the people would leave and ran out of the park with him. I worked full time and tried doggy day care, into week 2, I was asked not to bring him back. I was dumbfounded, I had never experienced anything like that before. I sat down on the floor with him and started to cry. Suddenly, he wrapped a paw around my arm an just looked at me... from that day forward and 11 years later he never left my side, till the day he was diagnosed with cancer and I had to let him go. I have sammy & buddy who are rescues by my side as we wait out hurricane Ian. Side by side... together 💕

As much as Lee's story made me laugh, yours brought a tear to my eye. Tucker taught you the hard way as some dogs do. But you persevered, just as you will through this hurricane w/your Sammy & Buddy. Hope you can keep laughing tonight, and stay safe.🙏🏻

Did Tucker ever chill out enough so that you could take him places, or was he a "stay at home" guy?

Aw my dog was banned from doggy daycare too, later I found a place run by an older couple who also ran a farm. They had a combination of discipline and love that worked with her and she was good with them, but when she first arrived she stood over other dogs. Tbh she would tell off a male dog that didn't respect her space. Male dogs can be in your face. She's speyed but they still tend to push it. . Once they accepted her boundaries she was fine but you can't do that with other people's fur babies. But as a puppy the big dogs could through whatever rough and tumble they wanted with her and run her over or roll her over and she'd keep coming back for more.

I rescued my Bibi from the streets when she was a puppy. She was severely beaten and nearly lost an eye. She bit other dogs. She bit people. She also fought cobras and monkeys. I worked with her endlessly and she became the best dog I ever had at age 3 or 4. She passed away in November from a brain tumor at age 6. The pack is recovering, but we are devastated.

II rescued a Pit Bull from the pound, she was ugly, had been abused. It took me 3 years to help her become what she was meant to be, an incredibly intelligent certified service dog. She's now beautiful, happy and people marvel at all she can do. Don't ever give up, because sometimes it takes a while for the dog to develop into what they were always meant to be.

I have a black lab. Her name is Millie Moo. Worst dog I ever got! I went to the shelter for a small dog and she looked at me so pitifully that I had to bring her home. She was 4 months old and had been surrendered by her first owners. She was full of energy and I really did think I would have to take her back to the shelter as she chewed on everything and me. But we stuck it out together and now she is almost three years old. She is the most loving dog. It does take a while for labs to mature. I hug her all the time and I almost cry thinking about what would have happened to her if I hadn't of brought her home with me that day in the shelter.

We rescued a beautiful purebred border collie from our senior and disabled dear neighbor. We quickly found out why she couldn’t keep him. After two years of lessons, daycare, and wild walks we had the most wonderful, loving, well behaved precious being dog on earth. We were only blessed for 13 years of him before he passed. Anyone who has a highly active breed or mix does need to give them time to mature. Our boy still needed plenty of exercise when he matured but nothing like before. He was 4 years old before he became our best dog ever. Border collies are truly a special being. They’re smarter than we are. He actually had empathy and could read our minds. It never even crossed our minds to give him up in the beginning. I had dogs from when I was born. We are so thankful that we didn’t give him up. Of course, we’re not too smart. Now we have a border collie mixed with Bernese mountain dog. She keeps us young and is finally calming down. We’re going to rescue a senior bc when we really get old.

@@tommiemerritt4595We just got a little female border collie from a lady who wanted to rehome her. We had previously owned 2, one mellow and one crazy. Britt is a mixture of both. At 4 she's still so active, loves to run. Her previous owner had her in agility and she was started with sheep. I take her to barn hunt to keep her mind busy, mine too. They are smarter than most humans. She is in our heart and will be with us forever. My husband said no to having sheep in our backyard for her.

Training, training, exercise, electric fence, a 6 foot privacy fence. Baby gates. Nothing stopped her from going where she wanted. I kept her. Lots of tears and prayers. So true, Lee....4 years ago, I adopted a rescue dog from a really bad situation. He had had a wonderful foster, but when I got him he turned out to be a BITER....Holy cow, I would never have adopted him if I had known. But it turned out that after about 4 - 5 months, he stopped doing that, and being aggressive at the door. And now.....BEST DOG IN THE WORLD. The sweetest, most affectionate and goofy guy. He just needed time to feel safe, and secure, and to know that his home was his, and that he didn't have to be a guard dog to keep it. He is a total dreamboat. So glad I didn't know what the first four months would be like!

You get the picture, and I’ve thought of finding another loving home for him. However after watching this video, I’ve decided I WON’T give up on him!!! Thank you for putting things in perspective!! Owner of a Staffordshire Bull Terrier and this resonates with me so intensely. She was the first dog purchased from a breeder in our family. All of the previous dogs were rescues and phenomenally well behaved. She was so hyperactive and had no fear. Her breed type scared others, I had people scream at me to get this dog away from them even though her intent was innocent. She loves humans. I have had to be so more careful and prudent with her but it has been worth it. I am mindful that she may create fear in others, was once fearful of her breed myself. She has settled down but she is still high energy. Love her so much and dread losing her. She just has become a beautiful dog. Best friend had a vanilla Labrador and died last year that I previously dogsat and was just an awesome dog. No respect for personal boundaries but so incredibly loveable. Neither of us gave up on these dogs and it is very true. They just blossom in their own sweet time. When we take on dogs, this is a committment that they are going to be a family member for the duration of their lives.

Our Jake is going to be 9 years old this December and has JUST started to slow down the tiniest bit. He has no awareness of space or his place in it, he has no concept of size (his or anyone else's), he still runs full force for the door landing against it with two legs on the floor and two on the door windows when it's time for a walk, his tongue has no stop button, and he has separation anxiety like you wouldn't believe... BUT! He is so sweet and so loyal... his big brown eyes show nothing but love, even when he's being reprimanded for darting off after a deer and having to do the walk of shame into the house 15 minutes later... I couldn't imagine my life without him and I too just couldn't bear to give up on him... My thoughts on difficult (energetic) dogs has been and will always be... "This is a member of your family/pack... he may be a struggle, but if someone were to adopt him would he be living his best life?" My answer has always been "I don't know." and that... was never acceptable to me and thankfully my husband feels the same way.

But she has tried so hard to overcome her past, and we are now contemplating having my son's large dog to stay for a week while they are away, something I couldn't even have dreamt about a few years ago.

Bo sounds just like my chocolate lab. She has eaten everything. At 5 months she ate the wiring on my adjustable bed, ruined the bed and had to have surgery. I have lucked out though. We are at the 15 month mark and she has settled down considerably. She is the best snuggler and let's me sleep i in the morning to any time I want!

My English Chocolate Lab, Betti was a female version of Beau! The ONLY dog that ever drove me to tears because of her exuberance and insane ability to find trouble. Yep, by the time she was 5, though, she finally started to settle into a "cruiser". She had a penchant for taking herself on waddling adventures to visit neighbors, so I had to be at least 10 steps ahead of her plan for another couple of years. Her nickname of Betti-Boop never left her because she was forever just looking for a party. Bless you!

I had a beautiful Chocolate Lab and when you said you were hooking the dog to the bike I said, "BAD idea!" She was a lot like Beau! She ate all my best leather shoes one by one! lol. She was hard to walk. She always wanted to greet people and I didn't walk fast enough. Hence, two times I found myself flat on my face as she pulled to get to her "friend". She was a wonderful dog and I miss her so much. My Sugar Bear. Best dogs for a companion. You are blessed with so many doggie buddies

This made me laugh so hard. I adopted a Catahoula/Aussie mix several years ago that I named Ziva. She's the most loving, intelligent, sneaky, destructive dog that I've ever had. 3 doors, 2 couches, several chairs, parts of 2 walls, and endless sheets fell victim to her youthful exuberance. But this dog, she has my heart in her big webbed feet. We have such a deep connection and I can't imagine life without her. She has calmed down now in year five so don't give up people! The really great ones are worth the effort ❤

I've had Jack Russells for over 40 years. They may be small but are incredibly busy and full on. A lot of people get caught out, thinking "oh, they're little, they will be easy." Nope, they chew, bark, dig, escape, pick arguments with bigger dogs, all at 100 miles an hour. And they do this all their lives. But they are also wonderful, loving and so intelligent, and I can't imagine life without them.

Great story! I think many dog parents need to hear this. I rescued a Samoyed husky mix and he was horrible the first 3 years. I took so much patience and trail and error in training. His 4th year he started to really respond to the training and the 5th year we are enjoying our lives together. I can take him everywhere with me. No drama what so ever. I can leave him home alone, he sleeps and is completely chill. I missed the drama and since a year I rescued an other Samoyed (mix?) He is very very nervous and scared of everything. He screams yells and barks, never stands still. This time I know how to commit, love and trust that everything will be fine someday. Never give up on your dog unless its not fair to the dog :)

Had a black lab named Snoopy he destroy our house. First the sofa then the legs on our table and so on. He did not like a collar or harness. Snoopy went crazy when we put them on him. We started walking him and taking him to the pool to swim. When we arrived home he went to sleep. He had the best behavior of any dog ounce he started sleeping with me in my bed. Snoopy became my best friend. He lived to be 14 before passing away. I was lost of his passing even were in fights when they said bad things about my Snoopy my dog. I cried silently at night it hurt so bad. Then one day my Grandfather came to visit with a black lab puppy. He said here is you a new friend not replacing Snoopy but to help you to heal. I named him Shadow cause he truly was my shadow he is still with me and is 11. But Snoopy will always be in my heart. I do thank my Grandfather for Shadow. Best memory of Snoopy was camping with me and him rolling in freshly cut lawn he so love playing in that dam grass. Can't wait to see my Snoopy in Heaven.

I used to have a Blue Heeler that was way too much for me to handle at one point. I was depressed, job hunting, moving to a new area, etc., and she was off the walls and chewing everything. She is the closest I have ever come to taking a pet to a shelter. Everyone said "she will be better after she turns 2" I struggled. Lo and behold, almost to the day is her second birthday, she calmed down. She ended up being one of my great loves and "took care" of my crotchety, sick father. Dad had lung cancer and was ill from treatments and she stayed by his side and was so comforting to him. I'm glad I held out for those original 2 years

I had a "Beau" once, too. Mine was named "Chet" (Barker), but he was older (10) when I adopted him and much, much calmer than yours... except that he had severe SA. It wasn't so bad that he'd destroy my small LA (dingbat) apartment, like Marley & Me, but he'd bark non-stop, even if I'd just stepped outside for a moment.
He was also a food-obsessed choc Lab, however, and this is no joke: When in doubt, don't leave it out! It was often like coming home to a crime scene, but my biggest fear was that it would mean an emergency. This was not only stressful for me as a caregiver to my two other elderly dogs, but for them as well. Finally, I found something so easy and inexpensive, I couldn't believe I hadn't thought of it sooner. Every time I'd leave the apartment, I'd give him a peanut butter or banana-stuffed kong to keep him busy and as a reward. Also, I'd give him a couple of AN Happy Travelers (supplement, not a sedative) to calm him.
Anyway, like you said, Lee: Each dog I've had has taught me something different, not only about them but about myself. After the others sadly passed away, Chet and I moved alone together to the east coast to be here with family. My buddy loved food until one day when he didn't - and then we knew his time was near. He died Sept. 2017 at ~15/16, and I miss him and his brothers everyday.💕🍀🌈
ETA: Four adopted dogs of my own, first and last the most challenging, and both were Lab/mix.
Also, not sure if I mentioned it on this site or another, but a few months after Chet died, I dreamt that I'd given him away to a stranger, then immediately regretted it. When I woke up crying and looking for him, I was relieved to see his box of ashes on the dresser w/those of my other dogs. That's when I made peace w/his life and death, and I forgave myself. He was a dog who deserved so much more than I had to give, and though I'll always wish I could've done better, I know I did the best I could.

We reached out to find her a good home. Before anyone even responded, I realized it didn’t feel right. Someone gave up on her once and I wasn’t doing that to her again. I used to volunteer at a rescue. My favorite dog have been rescued from a fighting ring and was going to be really hard to adopt out because he was very dog aggressive and fearful of a lot of men too. But I used to take him on dates all the time just down to the countryside and he chilled out so much. Then I bought a house so that I can foster him and kind of build a space for him to be safe and separate from my dogs. And 5 days after he moved in he died. He had gotten sick with lymphoma. So it turned out to be hospice but I would have kept him forever.❤

It was difficult to take him to the dog park because of his unpredictable behavior. As with Bo, Chewy chilled out as he got older and became a calm, wonderful, middle aged dog. Omg! That story was hysterical, except for the fall of course. It brought back memories of my dog from years past named Bear. He was a lab, chow mix a pretty big guy. I had to work during the day and so always walked him at night. He associates grass with playing fetch. One night we were walking thru a school on our way to a safe area to play fetch and run him off for awhile. But, before we got there he saw grass to my left and jetted in front of me to get there. I probably should've dropped the leash at that point, but there was a busy street right there and I hung on. I got slam dunked right into the curb HARD! Long story short, I broke my left hip and left shoulder in that fall. I required 3 large screws in my hip. Almost 2 years later to the day, I was walking him when he wandered into some bushes. I went after him and inadvertently got the leash wrapped around my ankles and, once again went down on the pavement and broke my right hip. They put more hardware in that hip too. My sweet Bear. I miss him.

Thank you, Lee, for saying not to give up on a dog. So many people just take a puppy to a shelter or, worse, just abandon them. Dogs are completely dependent and loyal to us, they deserve better.

You are so right, never give up if possible! A year ago we were given a wild Chihuahua mix. He had been rehomed 4 times before we took him. He showed signs that he had been mercilessly teased, and had severe food allergies. His food issues have been resolved and he lives in a calm, loving home. He is just the best little guy. Friends remark on what a nice dog he is. Especially those that met him right after we got him. He is our 6th rescue. Every one of them has been joy and love in a furry body! Those no longer here are greatly missed. Keep doing what you do, Lee. You are a bright light in this world!

This is almost how I feel about my current dog. I never thought about giving her up. I swear not even once. However, my fiancé gets annoyed with her and compares her to our other older well behaved dogs… mind you they are all over 6 and she just turned 3… I see SO much potential in her she is SO smart, SO athletic. Shes very good at reading other dogs even though she’s pretty insane by herself. She’s very gentle with kids even though she’s a very high strung dog. She always wants our pack together and even though sometimes she messes up she listens to the corrections. I just see her really blossoming into an amazing dog in the future. And maybe even a potential pack leader and it’s a beautiful thing to watch. It’s really hard for me to get mad at her to the point where I would feel like giving her up because there’s just so much potential.

Wow, you are very aware of your dog! You listed out so many amazing things about her!
When your fiancé starts seeing those things also, his view will change because she sounds so… amazing!
When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.
I have a “wild child” (her doggy school named her that) also who I absolutely ADORE, one of the loves of my life, and I always say that when she gets to be a “young lady” she’s going to be the best dog ever… just needs time. Shes only 1 and half and She’s nuts though.

Adopted my dog Eric from the local shelter when he was four months old. He's Husky'Lab and I almost admitted defeat countless times. He was so bad. He will be four years old next month and I'm so glad I didn't give up. He turned into such a good dog and I'm sure will only get better with age. The story about Beau was so funny! I will remember that, Not my dog, but I will find the owners! Too bad I live in such a small town that a lot of people know he's mine. Thanks for the great videos. Just wanted to add that I did not let Eric run rampant. There were and are boundaries and rules. And he gets lots of exercise and love and attention.

I do know that many Labrador retrievers are "puppies " with the all-day zooms for the first three years and they will behave as pups chewing up your underwear, socks and furniture..My son n law and family would exercise his dog every day but only tired out the family who took turns, but never, Lexi, a beautiful black lab. Like Lee they stayed with it and added brain games for her to complete. It all payed off. Around 3.5 to four years old, she finally outgrew her puppy behavior. She is 10 years old now. Sweet as ever❤. Never give up.❤

Bird dogs and working breeds are a different kind of dog experience. I always tell people that they don't grow out of puppyhood and calm down until at least age 3. This has been my experience as a Pointer mom. It takes lots of exercise and enrichment, especially in their natural working environment, but also just waiting for them to grind off their rough puppy edges naturally. A hour in the fields wears my dogs out faster than an hour at the dog park.

I would do the same. I love you, Lee. I've had dogs with weird behaviors, bad behaviors, and curious and funny behaviors. I had a dog named Jack who had a problem with jumping up on people because he loved people so much - we would yell, "Jack, off!" and people around us would lose it laughing. I got so embarrassed!! We obviously changed the command, and used his full name, Jackson. So, I get ya. XOXO

I want to share with you-- 2 years ago I lost one sweet dog Sept.10th, then October 26th I had to let my other little girl go. On the way home from that awful night, I got a phone call about 2 little boys that needed a home. I said yes yes yes. I got them the next day. What a wonderful blessing they have been. I still hurt over the loss of Gilley and Bailey, but these 2 little guys ,Rocky and Pokey, have been a joy. They had been shuffled from home to home until I got them. I love them so much They are here to stay.

I'm a Northerner but for 'partner' reason I moved to Lafayette LA. But when I came I was horrified to see so many homeless dogs. I, of course took in a bunch and immediately became an enemy of the city. They constantly KATC tv 3 showed how terrible people were to have too many dogs. I had to give up my house and flee to NE Texas that of course is a bad place to live. After 2 years we snuck back in here and nobody knew we were all hiding in here. I tried to save dogs instead of being caught and sent to be euthanized but we were ENEMIES OF THE STATE. Most of them are still alive and we are doing well. I am 73 but to the end of my days I will stand up for these guys, even if we're hunted out of the city we're in.

Oh sounds like my Wiley, Great Dane/yellow lab mix I found in a dumpster at work when he was about 4 weeks old. And then the circus began. He is the sweetest craziest dog I have ever had. He got loose at the beach one time and all you could see through the sea of people were flying beach chairs and people screaming and my Wiley right in the thick of it. He was playing with my son one time and jumped up so hard he literally split my sons forehead wide open like a boxers eye. Wiley is now 9 and has calmed down a bit, not a lot but a little. God I love that big idiot!
