  • Thrills, spills, drama, suspense, action, danger; my first ever bullet hell game for #BulletHellJam was an experience containing none of these.
    Instead, I worked with an amazing artist (who happens to be my partner) in creating one of the best-looking games I've ever had the pleasure of working on. IN A WEEK.

    When you talked about a "proximity feature".
    It reminded me of a very niche mechanic.
    I think you'd know about "CAVE" and their bullet hell games.
    Well, in one of them.
    "Ketsui: Kizuna Jigoku Tachi" (yes that's it's full name), there is a scoring feature, scores in the game are represented by green squares with numbers on them (called Chips).
    The scoring feature is that the more closer you are to an enemy the bigger the score is.

      Ahhhh, I know a couple of CAVE games (Death Smiles is probably my favourite, but I also love ProGear and Akai Katana -- there's something about the horizontal ones I love, apparently!) but I'm not familiar with Ketsui. Maybe I'll have to get into it, and call it research. ;)

    This game was great! It was really awesome, can’t believe this was made in a week, even with 2 people. Also yeah, that video would be really cool! I hope you’ve gotten some sleep since then :)

      Thank you! Well, we'll be doing some small fixes for the jam version of Maledictus soonish and, after a couple of my own projects are finished, working on a full-size release! ;)

    Absolutely stunning game. Love the visuals. What a great story..... I can code but I can't do art to save my life. I have never found an artist so I get stuck on the "squares" or "place holder" stage and give up. I am going to try again in 2024. Maybe I can find someone great to work with after hearing your inspiring story! Can't find a finished full game for sale. Shame you two didn't do the full game. It has so much potential

      We *might* have started work on a full version earlier this year, maybe. We also *could* be taking it a little slowly because of other things going on, and *possibly* will start posting updates when there's something to show. ;)
      Squares can work though. Two older indie shmups by the same dev, rRootage and Noiz2SA, had visuals that were just squares and other simple geometric shapes. And they were AWESOME. :)

      My partner and I are definitely looking into making a full-size version of this jam game which *should* be heading to Steam when we've done it. A longer-term project though, these things take time, especially when you're not crunching like mad people over a week-long jam. ;)

    No way this is so cool! I remember participating in this Game Jam and also making my first bullet hell game. I've been continuing to work on it for 2 years now and it's close to releasing as a full game! I would much appreciate it if you checked out the demo and gave me some feedback.     What software did you use to make the game?

      Construct 3! Art was mainly done in ProCreate (by my partner) with a few things (the stuff that I did personally) made in GIMP.
