The idea of spending years on something only for it to flop or not even see the light of day terrifies me but man what you've done with this is really something special. I remember seeing this project way back. Great to see the end of the road!
I wouldn’t let that hold you back pal iv been working on my own game for 5 years as a solo dev you’ve just got to go for it and don’t let anything stop you ❤
So something that I've learned as I've gotten older and I wish I learned earlier is to allow yourself to be new at a new skill, for me I was so afraid of failure that I'd never learn something new. But reality is we learn as humans more from failure than we do from success, so it's okay to fail! If you do, and you probably will with something as complex as a game let's be honest here it's a complex amalgamation of stuff science, language, math, art. And those are just the basic skills, it goes further in the more complex your project. So make games and learn from everything you do and eventually you'll get better and better and better, . Its not a race it's a learning experience, and the only way to really fail is either to never start for fear of failure. Best of luck I really hope to see your work in the future 😀
I'm studying game art right now and your story is honestly so inspiring. You don't shy away from talking about your failures and instead show us what we can learn from them. I really hope your game will be a success and that I might also be able to develop one in the future.
patch quest is probably one of the most refined gaming experiences i've played recently. being part of the community throughout the development was great!
I saw this video at the perfect point in my game design journey, I just started my "last 10%" of menus, options, and all the other minutia. As another first time dev, thanks for the motivation.
You should make a video where you explain the creation of a monster. Like what was the original concept, how and why you changed it over time and go more in-depth in the little design choices.
Really excellent video, so many great messages, sounds like you learned a lot from this journey both about game development and about yourself. Congrats on making an excellent game and reaching the finish line!
Might sound funny but when I moved to another country for my PhD last year, your videos really helped me settle in and I got super immersed in those alone, without ever playing the game. Those videos alone have helped me a lot on my personal journey, so thanks! Definitely gonna buy the game
20 minute - 23 minute mark was beautiful. I am a college professor and director of data science courses while also working on my PhD in AI but I have been making games on the side for years, doing consulting work for indies who don't underestand economics / econometrics for their games. I have been working on my dream game for years and I redo it from scratch each time I learn new skills. I can walk miles around adobe products and game engines, but I am solo so it gets discouraging when I run into breaks where I see new completed games. I teach my students growth mindset and I'm here living it. I also think back to the fact that I am trying to also tell a story and immerse the audience in an environment. I am also reminded that a lot of games exist and are fun to play now even though their style and concept are almost 40 years old.
Your story is so inspiring, this video He taught me soo many things, what to do how to do, and your game is truly a work of art. And thanks to you i now have a reason to start game dev too. Thank you Sorry if there are speling mistakes, my english aint very good
This video came at the exact right time! I literally just rediscovered your channel just as I'm starting to take game development seriously. Thanks so much for being so transparent with everything! Your story is very helpful
Congratulations !! Publishing a game is a huge achievement. I work with big teams to make and deliver and it's already hard, making one all by yourself is a humongous challenge. Thank you for sharing your experience both now and along the way.
I think in-depth vids would be an awesome follow-up across the board :) The learning curve for every one of those hurdles you jumped, smashed through and tripped over would be a great thing!
I have been following patch quest for a while and some of the advice was good to hear, I'm making my own card game and this video really resonated with me ❤️
Cool! I would love to be able to make this journey and upload a similar video in the near future. Looking back at something I made and share it with people. Congrats on making one of your dreams come true! Haha, I hope to find and work with someone like you on a game like the PKMN TCG for the GameBoy! That would be a dream come true!
It is really hard for me to play games now as I am always drawn to trying to emulate what they have done. It is a very dangerous double edged sword. It is comforting to hear another developer going through this issue. I appreciate your advice.
Been developing a game for a good minute and I’ve never felt disheartened by new releases since I’m making my game BECAUSE it doesn’t exist. No other game has the animations I want to look at with the mechanics I want to pilot and the story I want to tell. I personally have to put that into the world
Bravo, this is probably the best devlog I ever seen🎉 the game too looks rich in ideas and content I am rewatching this video for the third time how good it is. Really good job well done mate
This video was absolutely incredible. You did such a fantastic job distilling down the indie game creation experience, and your game looks like an absolute blast to play! Best of luck on your launch, I’ll be picking myself up a copy!
"You will continue to grow for as long as you believe you can." "Life is supposed to be an adventure where you reach for your dreams, even when it's difficult." I remember your early dev logs, so seeing how you've pushed to the end and learned so much from it is truly inspiring for me struggling with my web design and development degree right now. Your words made me tear up, and I've put them up on my whiteboard! I wish you the best of luck, skill, and ammo with the launch!
If you're worried about marketing, having a TH-cam channel has helped immensely. I only found this game through your channel. It's a fun, unique roguelike for sure. Glad I found it!
I've been following your journey on Patch Quest for years now, learning from your experiences as you developed all these things and explained all your Dev Logs and... I don't design video games, my focus tends to be more on the tabletop: TTRPGs, Card Games, Board Games. And I've learned so much from seeing you fight to finish this game that I can apply to my own projects. I didn't realize until I'd discovered your videos that I'd made much the same mistake, and overlooked what the core of my game was and had to restart from scratch several times before I was finally able to settle on something. My own projects are still in development, but I wanted to take a moment to thank you for all the advice, guidance, and inspiration you've given me over the years. I *finally* remembered to subscribe today, and you can bet I'll be buying a copy when Patch Quest Releases next month. Thank you so much for everything, and congratulations on your upcoming release.
Very enjoyable video i like how u explained divided into chapters and how sincere u was not hidding any details. about the game inself the "lasso" idea is a very good innovation since it require some skill to dodge the bullets and keep completing the circle.
I think your game gave me some unconcious inspiration for the first project I plan to release. I always enjoy listening to your devlogs and the game making process. Thank you for sharing ^-&
Just purchased your game because your content has been so amazingly inspirational. I've been going on the same journey recently, and when I realised my game wasn't working I restarted it as a direct inspiration from you. Thank you!
Struggling along on my own solo journey while I try to simultaneously learn Unity and C#. Your video helped me feel less alone and gave me some inspo. Thanks for that!
I'm currently watching your video while I'm developing my own game. Its really inspiring to see your journey up and downs until your final result. Amazing work ! Great Video
i want to become a game developer when i am older and have been learning and exploring for 2 years now and you have taught me a tonnnn of life lessons thanks!! my favorite video
Just found out this beautiful game, hopefully I will be able to buy it at the end of the month. One Toy Idea: Flute (actually amazing if is playable but I think that is too much), when sounds all the pets in ranch make a little dance at the same rhytm maybe even march in line . Looking foward for more news!
Your videos really make me feel quite excited for the future. I'll def. keep my scope quite small. Had some experience with PHP a few years back so I hope I have a good idea on how to not go overboard with my ideas. Thanks a bunch for your videos and talking about mistakes and lessons learned. Was a blast and you most certainly saved a lot of people a lot of time and frustration
I’d love it if you made a video on each of the topics you listed at the end. But even if you don’t, I can’t wait to get Patch Quest. It looks fun and unique. You’ve taught me a lot about game design which has been so helpful! Thanks and good luck for the launch and your future projects!
Really beautiful video, made me tear up a bit. It must feel really great to have a release date after all this time. Been following you for a few years and the game has never looked better. Can’t wait to play through it again when it finally releases v1.0
Congrats! I’ve had Parch Quest wishlisted for so long. Literally just about to play for the first time on my Steam Deck. Looks like you’ve hit that perfect balance between being punishingly difficult and yet never frustrating.
So inspiring and cool! Def one of my fav devlogs out there. I cant wait to see your well deserved success! ;) And I cant wait to finally play the game too
I just came back from one of Retromation's plays of Patch Quest. I didn't realize that the world of Patch Quest is so large and complex. I really enjoy when some of his comments run parallel to your descriptions of the game. Very cool game!
ohhh really interesting, i did never thing about the main thing in the game such as jumping in mario, it's actually gonna help me so much, already love this video so far
Thank you for sharing your journey with us! I’ll revisit this video when I need it ❤ I thought that Patchquest was created by a larger studio, so kudos for you, your skills, patience and love for your ideas.
Super inspirational. Could not agree more on learning that the things worth doing are often the hardest. Can't wait to try out the 1.0 version of the game!
I saw your game on Steam and I was like - wait... I remember watching a TH-cam video about a game similar to this. And wouldn't you know, this was the video! Immediately bought it :)
I am watching your dev logs for a while now. I am impressed that you could keep up the motivation through out those years. So, I just bought your game and played it for a few hours. I realy enjoy it so far. It has fun game play mechanics and it is very polished. Great work!!!
This video was truly inspiring. There are many "how to game dev" videos out there, but this video really got to me. Your passion is incredible and I'm so proud of you for not giving up for so many years working on this project. Personally, rougelite is not at all my genre. Your game definitely looks awesome, but it's just not my kinda game. I bought it anyway to support you, as I think passionate, dedicated artists like you are definitely what this world needs. I'm sure many players out there will greatly enjoy your creation! Good luck
I was a player of that original discord beta from 3 or so years ago and only recently im looking through steam and saw the game was out, honestly i instantly bought it cause i rememebered how good its beta was
Great video, and you should be so proud of your game. It looks fun and beautiful! I'm literally just dipping my toe into game making, but im a bit older and basically starting from scratch
I can't believe the first time I learn of this game is the devlog of it's creation! This looks like a 'content creator' friendly type, I predict a rather few videos of it to appear soon.
This is amazing insight. I think the part about the Discord community was super relevant, at least for me. You need to be kept accountable and there is something motivating about people actually play testing your game and enjoying it.
This game looks fantastic, already shared it with my friends and all of them are interested. I fully support you , and I love how fresh the idea is . KEEP IT UP MY FRIEND !!!! 🤩
Really proud how far this project has come and how much you have learned and share it with us! You nailed it with monster design and understood appeal, which many other monster designers seem to miss. I'm also trying making game and it is really hard!
Thank you for this video!😍 I'm starting out with game dev and your experiences you provide are sooo helpful to here!🥰✨ Please keep updates us about your journey, this video was so much pleasure to watch😍💫✨👍🏼
I was watching your devlogs for a long time, played early access version, and I will come back to it at full release. Great job so far - good luck, fingers crossed!
Ahhh, I remember when I first started watching Patch Quest devlogs back in late 2019. I actually started trying to develop games back then, but I'm still yet to find something that really resonates with me. Its been really inspiring to see this game develop and evolve. I love the art style the gameplay and the very unique hook of the game and it's amazing to see this game finally on steam and available.
Fascinating video. You've made an amazing game to be very proud of, it's incredibly fun! I've been hooked ever since I bought it. I'm sure it was rough, glad you didn't give up. Great job!!
I have been following along for some years and it has always been exciting to see Patch Quest evolve and being even more enjoyable to play!! Tracking the progress in the great dev log videos and having a go at it for each new update has been a blast and the game have managed to impress me with new brilliant features every time becoming even better (For instance when underwater and all the music and sounds become “submerged”. Especially PAC’s bibs and bops xD ). I look much forward to the launch and how it all ties together!!
Very few games have such a focus around its monsters/pets. I love things like pokemon and monster hunter so I'll definitely check your game out. You are hitting a niche thats targeting me hard. Hope your game does amazing!
Very inspiring, hope you will make it big! I relate a lot about the artist's part and desire to create that dream project. I respect your dedication toward making your journey because I see a lot of myself in it.
Really great video, learnt a ton from this video. I really liked the flowers, animals and randoms videos in between which tied the whole thing together. Will definitely give the game a try
This and Hi-Fi rush are 2 10/10 game in my list this year, I bought it day one and even after 10 hours I’m enjoying it. Thanks for this amazing game! Respect your hard work
I saw NL play this game, and was very disappointed he didn't play more - so when i got the opportunity, I got it! This game really hits a niche for me I love (the part htat adored Pokemon Ranger as a child) and I love that this is a rougelike game! Thanks for sharing this process - this game is fun!
I got the game recently and it was a blast so far, the gameplay is fun, pets are very cute (especially snooth, snooth is the best) and the style is nice too, even such a small thing like decorating the camp with pins is not boring in the slightest. I think it would be cool if when you get a treasure you can place it in your camp as a pin on a pedestal or something.
Should I make an in-depth video on a particular side of game development? (Like Coding, or Art?)
Comment Below!
Uhh Art would be interesting 😅
Enjoy your game my favorite game so far!
I think deep dives would be very interesting. Coding, art, story/dialogue, etc
I would love to see you talk about coding!
Im DYING to know more about your artstyle
The idea of spending years on something only for it to flop or not even see the light of day terrifies me but man what you've done with this is really something special. I remember seeing this project way back. Great to see the end of the road!
Just gotta stay positive :)
I wouldn’t let that hold you back pal iv been working on my own game for 5 years as a solo dev you’ve just got to go for it and don’t let anything stop you ❤

I live in the cave, ok ?
xD
I'm studying game art right now and your story is honestly so inspiring. You don't shy away from talking about your failures and instead show us what we can learn from them. I really hope your game will be a success and that I might also be able to develop one in the future.
Best of luck!
Your opinion on the AI image generator
Torokami 110, honestly bro, you got this and only person who has to believe in you is YOU, that’s it and ik that was not asked for.
patch quest is probably one of the most refined gaming experiences i've played recently. being part of the community throughout the development was great!
Thanks so much Dazcar!

No problemo
You should make a video where you explain the creation of a monster. Like what was the original concept, how and why you changed it over time and go more in-depth in the little design choices.
This is a great idea, I'll do this with the post launch monsters in a couple of months time
Really excellent video, so many great messages, sounds like you learned a lot from this journey both about game development and about yourself.
Congrats on making an excellent game and reaching the finish line!
Thanks a ton!
genuinely insane that this is your "first" game. The quality of it is truly something to be proud of, Lemon.
Might sound funny but when I moved to another country for my PhD last year, your videos really helped me settle in and I got super immersed in those alone, without ever playing the game. Those videos alone have helped me a lot on my personal journey, so thanks! Definitely gonna buy the game
That's awesome, thanks
It's been a fun ride, happy to have jumped on the beta when I did
Thanks for all your testing and feedback!
Yesss! It's amazing to see all the changes the game has had, and can't wait to see new projects!
Me too!
I'm so excited that Patch Quest is finally getting a proper release! By far one of my favorite indies, and I can't wait to continue to see it grow :)
20 minute - 23 minute mark was beautiful. I am a college professor and director of data science courses while also working on my PhD in AI but I have been making games on the side for years, doing consulting work for indies who don't underestand economics / econometrics for their games. I am also reminded that a lot of games exist and are fun to play now even though their style and concept are almost 40 years old.
2 years ago I watched your old video, installed your game on the discord app store, and then when I saw this I was so happy
Your story is so inspiring, this video He taught me soo many things, what to do how to do, and your game is truly a work of art. And thanks to you i now have a reason to start game dev too. Thank you
Sorry if there are speling mistakes, my english aint very good

You're welcome
Congratulations !!
Publishing a game is a huge achievement.
I work with big teams to make and deliver and it's already hard, making one all by yourself is a humongous challenge.
Thank you for sharing your experience both now and along the way.
No problem :)
This looks like something Nintendo would take years to make with a whole team! You somehow managed to do it all by yourself!? Props to you man (:
It's inspiring to see the masterpieces indie devs can make compared to the bigger studios!
I think in-depth vids would be an awesome follow-up across the board :) The learning curve for every one of those hurdles you jumped, smashed through and tripped over would be a great thing!
It was great to watch your journey. I started seeing your videos 2 years ago and I’m so happy patch quest is almost completed
It's been a long time coming haha
This game has become really fun and it feels complete imo
Thanks!
I have been following patch quest for a while and some of the advice was good to hear, I'm making my own card game and this video really resonated with me ❤️
I am starting my game dev journey your journey is really inspiring.
It's a natural feeling
20:58 The quote " Don't compare yourself to other people. Compare yourself to who you were yesterday " is by Jordan Pearson. Great guy.

Thunbs up for DKC soundtrack use. Stickerbrush symphony
Thanks!

Your game looks very polished! Well done! Good luck!
Congratulations on the launch!!
If you're worried about marketing, having a TH-cam channel has helped immensely. I only found this game through your channel. It's a fun, unique roguelike for sure. Glad I found it!
You can do it Liam, don't give you up. I also want to create my own project too and I put your story as a motivational guide :)
Best of luck!
What a journey and the game looks fantastic! Can’t wait to buy the finished game in March!!
Hope you enjoy it!

about the game inself the "lasso" idea is a very good innovation since it require some skill to dodge the bullets and keep completing the circle.

So inspiring and cool! Def one of my fav devlogs out there. I cant wait to see your well deserved success! ;) And I cant wait to finally play the game too
Thanks so much!!
This game has been such a joy during early access, I can't wait for the full release 😊 I'm rooting for you (and your numbers)!

I love the art style the gameplay and the very unique hook of the game and it's amazing to see this game finally on steam and available.
Love that you used Donkey Kong Country music for this video. Thank you for sharing your journey with us. Excited to try your game. 💕
;D
YOU FINISHED IT?? I'M SO PROUD! I remember watching your update video years ago.
Thanks for playing it all this time :)
this game you've made looks amazing. it's amazing that you made this while also working and you did everything on this without a team?? incredible
Great Video! Ive always wanted to be a game developer and you’ve really inspired me! I sincerely hope your game does well, you deserve it!
Very few games have such a focus around its monsters/pets. I love things like pokemon and monster hunter so I'll definitely check your game out. You are hitting a niche thats targeting me hard. Hope your game does amazing!

This is my favorite game in general. You did amazing
Glad you enjoyed it!
What a great success story, your game looks beautiful. And the video is so well made. Congrats on all the success. ♥
This and Hi-Fi rush are 2 10/10 game in my list this year, I bought it day one and even after 10 hours I’m enjoying it. Thanks for this amazing game! Respect your hard work
Very happy to see pq finally seeing the sun as a complete game
ヽ(・∀・)ノ
WOW What a crazy video!! Thanks for the motivation!! Wishlisting the game right away
The biggest thing i learned is you will make and not finish a lot of game prototype tell one just clicks and you keep adding to it and making it fun
1:15 - Hey, it's the Messiah oof that Joey Kuras created!
Brilliant video. It's great to hear your retrospective thoughts and the whole story!
scrolling througt steam and found this game, the art is remind me from dev log videos on yt. congrats for the release
