I've been here 3 days. I chose an inexpensive hostal in the suburbs. My AB&B is $16. a night.
Those first two days ended with me wondering what you found so interesting about Arequipa. The 3rd day, I started early and walked the central area.
The weather, here, is to my liking. Cold sleepable nights and warm shirt sleeve days.
Coffee shops and restaurants are of excellent "Western" quality at Peruvian prices. I just finished a wonderful Oso Buco for $13USD.
It's a 25 or 30 minute walk from my apartment. When I do this again, I'll look for a place 20 minutes closer to downtown.
The sidewalks in the "burbs" are as bad as any I've walked in my last two years of slow travel. The streets are dirty and litter strewn.
Based on my "boots on the ground" experience, I believe that I could live here very well, solo for $1200 to $1500 a month.,(Feb.2024)
My visa is running out or I'd stay here much longer.
Thanks, Dan, for encouraging me to add Arequipa to my travels.

We lived in Arequipa for 16 months while I worked on a project. It definitely has some great pros as well as a few cons. One can live well on about half what it would cost in the USA and the climate is fantastic. The people are very friendly and the food is good. The taxis are a pollution nightmare and they have a problem with fake taxis that are robbers. I would definitely consider living there again if not for family considerations.

We loved the old town area and walked everywhere. Plus, we used Uber.com for all taxi rides since there is an international record of who picks you up and how much it costs and where they dropped you off. Just don't flag a taxi on the street. Honestly, that is a rule I follow all over the world when possible.

I love Arequipa. The volcano looming in the background and the high altitude put it at the top of my list of favorite places in Peru. And you got some great pictures in Santa Catalina Monastery. When I was there, I overheard a tour guide telling her clients that one of the nuns was well known for two reasons - first, she could levitate, and secondly, she could be in TWO places at the SAME TIME! And she said this with an entirely straight face. Unbelievable. And I mean that in the most literal sense, lol.

In Lima there is very little sunlight year around with a lot of fog and drizzling which to me was depressing, although the temperature never dips very low or very high. Drivers in Lima are dangerously careless (ignore stop signs regularly, very aggressive driving) and the traffic slows everything down from a lack of good public transportation options.

Not only Arequipa there is more cheap in another cities , all around Peru , you should to go other places. There is beautiful places, in the cost, jungle, mountain it's more cheap if you don't care about city is more cheap buying on locals markets than malls , if you want to live without luxury, you will live more cheap . If you produce yourself food will be free , is more free to buy locals . Help the locals to produce more and will be more abundance more they produce life will be more cheap, lack of productivity make the country spensive, more productivity, les spensive. So we need help locals they produce none químicas food.

How much you reckon it would cost for 2 adults and 2 children? Have international schools? Have expat hospitals?

    • @nydownes
      @nydownes 4 ปีที่à¹à¸¥à¹‰à¸§ +3

There are private hospitals, yes. These are used by middle and upper class locals as well (not just expats). There are several schools well known for the level of English that their students attain. Prescott, Lord Byron, Max Uhle (your kids will also learn German here). These schools are between $5,000 - $7,500 per year for the tuition (other costs not included).
Kids learn languages really fast. These schools are all upper-middle and upper class families. There is nothing inherently wrong with these families and many are really great people. However, to really learn about a different culture, being around the folks who have less can really be eye opening.

The riptides in Cancun were pretty strong. Do you know where I can swim out in to the ocean?

My advice is never ever move or retire in Peru. It is disorganized poor and cortupt. Take it from someone who lived there ten years.

@@VagabondAwake You visited Peru as a tourist in a bubble. As I said before, living there as a resident is different. I'm back in the US with my Peruvian wife. She thinks it's Disneyland compared to Peru. No more power outages, water rationing, stray dogs, and trash in the street. Again, never ever consider living in Peru.
