We had a talk from his mum a couple of years ago: she did everything she could to keep Breck safe and he still ended up dead. Im not sure that's true, he was raised to trust everyone, alongside the religious undertones of respecting authority. His parents should've done so much more, how can a teenager be so smart but lack basic common sense? Because his parents didn't teach him to think for himself. They may not be legally responsible but are morally negligent.

    I had to call the police not long ago after my son made friends with a so called young girl in a online game. My son brought it to my attention after this person was telling him to say certain sexual things (very explicit ) to say and asking for naked photos, my son was 11yrs old. I rang the police and gave them every detail about this so called young girl and nothing was done. It's scary how many predators are out there.

    • @InTheMindOfDavid
      @InTheMindOfDavid 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      To be fair, when his mother called the police she wasn’t making clear that actual grooming was taking place. Like she said that Lewis was turning Breck against everything and goes on to tell the police how Lewis is anti-government and anti-Christianity. Which in my opinion is completely irrelevant, especially when compared to what was actually happening. With Lewis isolating Breck from his other gaming friends while also alienating him from his mother. That he’s convinced Breck that Breck doesn’t have to listen to her, and that she’s just evil cause she’s jealous of them of their friendship. He’s completely undermined and destroyed the very foundation of her relationship with her son.
      But no, apparently Lewis being anti-government and anti-Christianity was the most pressing concern. Why would a Police Officer in another country talking to their citizen about your child in the US when you could just take away all of his things that connect to the internet or just revoking his protection internet privileges? Their problem solved.

    When I was 15 I went into Napster chat rooms and received a lot of attention from men and women in their 20's-30s. I was just coming into my sexuality and it was a place I found I felt safe to be gay. It didn't feel like something I could share with anyone in my life at the time. I'll never know for sure but I would often talk to a mid 30 year old woman and remember it being flirty. I still remember the song she sent me Obsession by Animotion. At some point we disconnected and I joined an lgbt MSN chat room. I lied and said I was 17. I never thought that women could be predatory. I really loved the attention I got from the 30-40 year old women who showed interest. I grew up in an unhealthy family (alcohol and emotional neglect/abuse) and those vulnerabilities led me to seek attention from older women and authority figures. Thankfully I never met anyone and wasn't pushed to do so. After learning about this poor boys story I hadn't realized how lucky I am. Thank you for covering it ❤

    As a parent of younger children who are beginning to get into gaming this absolutely terrifies me. From the moment we find out we are growing a little human we become fiercely protective, we would do anything to protect them...but the internet can be a scary, dark place. I'm forever checking my kids accounts and removing 'friends' they don't know, making sure there are no strangers sending messages etc. But even doing all this sometimes it's just not enough 😢
    I can't even begin to imagine what Brecks parents went through let alone Breck himself. It's heartbreaking.

    Horrifying to imagine what was going on in Breck’s mind, the second it all clicks, that his mum was right, that Danes lied about everything, that he was now in a dangerous situation. I’d bet his last thoughts were about his mum, dad and the triplets. Poor boy, he had so much potential. Thank you Emma for telling his story.

Like Breck and his mum, we have a really trusting and close relationship. Mia is my only child. Again, I just think of sliding doors. it sends chills down my spine. But I’m thinking, that could have been my girl, if the wrong person was on the other side of that screen. She’s all grown now, but it truly does make you think. @@EmmaKennyTV Just got caught up on watching this and what an absolutely horrendous case…😢! I can’t begin to imagine the fear poor Breck would have been feeling in that moment when he realised it really was a trap from which he couldn’t escape; no doubt desperately wanting his Mum and Dad …something I’m sure that haunts Breck’s parents every day 😞! It brings tears to my eyes thinking of his terror when the realisation of his situation kicked in 😢! And, I just cant believe the inaction of the police, to think it all could have been avoided if they had simply bothered to input Daynes name..🤷🏼‍♀️?!?!
      What an amazing Mum Breck has though, doing everything she possibly could have done to try to avoid such a tragic outcome; and continuing to do so now by educating others in Breck’s name…!
      It beggars belief however the sheer level of depravity of Daynes, that he still taunts the family from prison…his only means to exert the control he clearly needs, is just beyond the pale! I just pray whatever equipment he had has now been taken away and the prison are actively vigilant at making sure he doesn’t get access to any more..🙏!
      Anyway, thank you for another great episode Emma; you really did Breck and his family justice with your astute insights and deep empathy! As a Psychologist too, I really enjoy how you explore these cases in such depth and detail; not just relaying the facts but also posing important questions, in a way we don’t really see on many crime documentaries!
      ( Just a side note if it’s Ok to ask, but could you please cover ‘Dennis Nilson’, ‘Israel Keyes’ and ‘Ted Bundy’ sometime perhaps - I know much has been said about ‘Bundy’ already but I would very much enjoy your hearing your insights… please and thank you! ) I hope you feel better soon 😊🤞!! That Daynes had previously been investigated for rape demonstrates a real dilemma: at the time his chillingly sadistic and psychopathic inclinations must have been clear to those in authority, many of whom I'd guess would have predicted that these would probably lead to serious harm or murder one day. But what can be done? You can't lock someone on the basis that they might be capable of committing an atrocity.

    • @susanwaldron6831

      Thats true but it would've taken the police only a few minutes to type his name into their database. That's all it would've taken to potentially save Brecks life. I hope the man who took her call and then just ignored it feels partly to blame for Brecks appalling death at the hands of that monster.

    • @dante6985
      @dante6985 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@susanwaldron6831 That's true... but you wisely used the words "potentially". People are blaming the police a lot in the comments, and let's say his mother was aware of Daynes record and tells Breck. Does he believe her? Groomers are exceptionally devious, if Breck is willing to believe a stranger is about to hand over a multi-million dollar company to him, he might believe his mom and the police are lying (or whatever sob story Daynes feeds him).

    Thank you for another excellent account, as hard as this one is, the extra detail you give in your posts is much appreciated.
    This horrific murder happened when I had 10 and 4 year old boys. It was so heartbreaking because of how hard Lorin tried to keep an eye on what Breck was doing. She talked to him, educated him on the danger of strangers online. Even reporting the situation to the police who did nothing. She could not have done any more. We all hope our children will be honest with us, the very people who try so hard to protect our children. Breck was so convinced by a stranger who manipualted his innocent trusting soul.
    When my youngest son was about the same age as Breck was when he died, he had started to play in a group with friends from school. I had the conversations with him about safety. One rigid rule being that in no circumstances was he ever to use his real name or give personal details online. There was a rule that while he played online he had to keep his bedroom door open, the only reason I allowed it in the first place is that he had moved schools 2 years previously and his new friends were all in the group play. I told him that I would be listening to him and that it was for his safety, he had been the victim of some horrible bullying at his last school so I wanted him to be able to be connected to his friends. He understood and didn't argue and I had agreed to it with huge reluctance. I listened randomly to his silly 14 year old conversations and everything seemed harmless.
    One day he mentioned a man had joined the group. He said the man was 19 and claimed to be the cousin of one of his friends. I asked questions about who the man actually was, did and of my son's friends actually know this person? It was all a bit 'muddy' so I told him when this man joined in with his group he was to log off, he was not to talk to him. I could not establish whether the friend group knew this person but it started to seem like he was a stranger to them and had won them over with his friendly banter. I listened in on the conversations and although nothing sounded out of order I still insisted to my son that a 19 year old man should not be joining in with a bunch of 14 year olds. I stopped him from playing for a couple of weeks.
    Some weeks later and despite my listening in to him playing with his friends, my other son, then 19, came to me and said that he had heard his brother giving his address to someone. I went straight upstairs and unplugged his console. I think I was in shock, I ripped into him about what a stupid thing he had done. The one thing that got to him was that I told him that the man online could be watching him, watching his bedroom window, waiting for him to leave the house. I sometimes wonder if that was a bit harsh because he was terrified at the thought of a stranger watching him with a view to harming him. It changed him and me. He was no longer allowed to play in online groups, it meant that he didn't play much online with friends but thank goodness he understood why. I consider myself very lucky that my son told me about the 19 year old man. What if he had never mentioned him? What if his brother had not heard him giving his address? When I watched this episode it reminded me of how sick I had felt, the thought that my son was in such potential danger sitting in his bedroom.
    I hope that police call handler has nightmares every night for not passing on the call for action, that sounds hard but I would want her locked up for her lack of action, just shocking. To think the police could have carried out a simple check that could have saved Breck. I cannot imagine how Lorin and Barry have dealt with how thier son died, knowing how scared he must have been. So young and so trusting of that evil stain of a person who killed him.
    I have no doubt that Lorin has saved a lot of children by telling her story and talking to parents. I hope she has been able to find peace.
