Semimajor axis is actually the mean of the periapsis and apoapsis, the lowest and highest points of the orbit respectively. (Really it's half the length of the widest dimension of the ellipse, but the geometry works out the same if you measure the periapsis and apoapsis from the very center of the parent body).
Cool! I always thought that a planet with mountains that extended above the atmosphere would be great in ksp2, but now I can have it in ksp until ksp2 gets interstellar travel in a few years

Hey, great tutorial! Really appreciate how concisely you show how to do this, because all of the other tutorials are really... dense, lol. I'm having an issue though, when I launch the game with my custom planet Kopernicus gives me an error message ("wasn't able to load the custom planetary system due to an exception"). I tried copy+pasting one of the Quackpack planets to make sure all the syntax was correct (overwriting texture files and orbit etc), still wouldn't work. Infinite discoveries red giants are a bit tricky since heightmaps don't work on stars. What you do to get heightmaps on stars is: 1. Make a regular planet (doesn't need a color map or normal map, just height. 2. Copy the cache of the planet (usually generated in the Kopernicus mod folder if not specified elsewhere) 3. Set the cache of the star to the planets cache folder. Since the mesh of the planet is stored in the cache, the star will take on that shape.
