For anyone interested in some more details on the rules of laying stone. He is doing a pattern known as random ashlar. He mentions 3 rules here and those are some of the most important but there are a few others that he is doing instinctively that aren’t mentioned.
To explain some of the terminology, with the stones he is using here, there are 3 sizes (heights), biggest is the jumper/riser (he refers to them as jumbo), the medium is leveller or stretcher, smallest is the sneck/deuce.
    Rules.
    1. Jumpers shouldn’t ever touch (except when used as quoins (corner stones)
2.the longest vertical joint should be the height of your biggest stone (jumper)
    3. The longest bed joint should be a set pre determined length that fits nicely for the wall. Usually 1200mm (4 foot level)
    4. A stone shouldn’t be higher than it is long
    5. Avoid obvious stepping (placing 2 stones next to each other of the same length and same height)
    6. Avoid placing snecks smaller than 100mm in the wall
    7. Your bonding lap should be at least the height of the stone being set ideally, but absolute minimum should be 100mm
    8. Never place more than 3 stones next to a jumper
Those are 8 of about 14 established rules. Again many of these he hasn’t mentioned but he is doing them instinctively in the video.

      @@travisandtracyjacobs6198 Hi Travis and Tracy
Good Question, I'm not sure truth be told, there is a book they sell here in Canada for apprentices that has it contained but it may be different depending on the part of the world you are in. Where abouts are you located ?

I am in Oregon in US.
Every time I get onto some of these cultured stone groups or mason groups people post little snapshots or snippets of how stones should be laid with no tombstones, running joints etc.
And I am searching for books or material that I can have as a reference so that I don’t always have to keep asking people stuff. Like those things that you just mentioned I want to make sure that I have those kind of ingrained in my brain. It’s hard to find books on masonry construction or the rules
