    I love this song. It's a moving mixture of optimism and pessimism, hope and cynicism. It takes me back to my high school and college days in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Sentimentality is one of my biggest weaknesses. Or is it a strength? I don't know.

    And here it is again!! A Dead recording!! The only place on TH-cam where you can read through the comments and not find bickering back and forth, ppl trolling to stir shit up and just rude and derogatory insults being thrown around. Instead you find everyone in one way or another giving gratitude to one another, the world and to this group of musicians. Maybe all of us here are fortunate to still be like kids////////......" And the politicians throwing stones, so the kids they dance they shake their bones"

    • @coryswartz5285
      @coryswartz5285 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The main reason for that, is because we're very fortunate and blessed to be part a "GRATE" community of incredible "DEADHEADS". I've met many longtime GRATE friends from long ago, during my years of touring, until about 10 years ago when a drunk driver caused me to flip my Toyota 4runner 5 times, being clinically dead for 3 minutes and 15 seconds, they used the defibrillator paddles on me for 3 times before I had come back. I was in YORK Hospital in a coma for 9 days, but remained in that hospital for a total of 6 weeks. I was then transferred to Moss Rehab Hospital in Philadelphia. While there I had to relearn too walk, talk, read, and write. Then 2 years ago my neorologist found a brain tumor. My 1st neurologist Dr Sterling was a very cool cat. He was a huge Deadhead.
      Now my neurosurgeon Dr Winer, is the same story. He's an even bigger Deadhead than Sterling. anyway, I just had cool doctors. Dr Winer couldn't get all of it. The portion that has grown tight against the upper left side of my brainstem, plus part of the tumor has grown wrapped around the brainstem. o well, shit happens. Sorry for the length of this aimlessly babbling session. Y'all have a "GRATE" night.

      It's in response to the original comment. He said this is "[t]he only place on TH-cam where you can read through the comments and not find bickering back and forth, ppl trolling to stir shit up and just rude and derogatory insults being thrown around." So I replied with a comment that uses all the platitudes that Internet trolls love to fall back on. It's satire. Get it now?

    • @coryswartz5285
      @coryswartz5285 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Gotcha man, it just didn't seem satirical when I had read it man. Plus it being right under my comment it seemed as if though it was directed towards me 100%. That's why I didn't really get the whole "rape culture" thing,lol. My bad!!!

      There are plenty of excellent professional musicians on TH-cam who dissect, instruct and otherwise dedicte hours of quality Dead related content. But yeah. Because musicians know the world is full of countless thousands of "unknown" musicians who are "better" than those who become famous. Classical, jazz, and bluegrass musicians, to name just a few genres, blow away those in rock.
      With rock, it's all about the SONGS, and there's nothing wrong with that.

      @@agnostic1247 he didn't need to hear Bobby because that parts was deeply imbedded in his head already but he hadn't played with Wasserman in bass often so the non-Phil was throwing his timing a little.
      But mostly you are correct: Jerry held his guitar up near his face so he can hear it. I've done the same.

    • @agnostic1247
      @agnostic1247 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      mu6best I hadn’t even noticed Wasserman was on bass. I was distracted watching Jerry. I’ve heard a lot of live tapes and it feels to me like Jerry would drift from time to time even under the best of technical circumstances. It’s part of the airiness that is his style. He could play out of pocket and at times it’s like an ethereal dance over the top of the band. He was so unique and a rather underrated talent outside the Dead community. I just read what I wrote. It sounds pretentious and it’s not exactly what I wanted to say but it’s close. Anyway, this was what I implied as Jerry leaving his fingerprints.

    Some of my favorite Dead music is Bob singing and Jerry riffing behind. Bobby Mcgee, El Paso, Black Throated Wind, Looks Like Rain, especially in the early 70's. Listen to the last night of Winterland '74 El Paso, Jerry rocks it out while Bob sings. I really grew up on early 70's shows and I've never lost my my love of the sound. The Black Throated Wind from Steal Your Face, the complete version on Relisten, is magic. It goes on past the album and is amazing. Had that tape in the early 80's, think it snapped.

    I got on the bus at age 8 June of 85, Hershey Pennsylvania to be exact. It's something I'll never forget, saw the rest of that summer tour and I've been riding the bus ever since. They are much more than just music, they are bigger then music, they fed off of us while we were feeding off them from show to show... It's not that they are the best at what they do........ THEY ARE THE ONLY ONES TO DO WHAT THEY DO. AS far as Jerry and his guitar playing he's definitely in the top five, when you have people like Eric Clapton just to name one saying in interviews that he doesn't know how he did the things he did, the riffs and notes he would put together on his guitar, Eric said he tried to recreate some of his solos and host couldn't do it and he wasn't the only one to say this like that. When Jerry was on he couldn't be touched. The fact that we were alive and got to see Jerry, Brent and the boys while they graced this earth to me is a true blessing and a gift... There 2 generations of there that ask they know is the renditions of the boys videos and recordings of the boys after Jerry left this broke down palace. Has there been some magic made since then yes but nothing, NOTHING LIKE THE MAGIC THE GRATEFUL DEAD HAVE US. IF YOU KNOW YOU KNOW. I'M SO GLAD I WAS THERE. I'VE SEEN THE BOYS 187 TIMES, JGB I SAW 104 WEIR AND WASSERMAN 74 TIMES, IF YOU INCLUDE RATDOG IN THAT WELL THEN IT WOULD BE JUST SHY OF 200.. I ALSO SEEN EVERY RENDITION SINCE THEN AND IM GRATEFUL FOR EVERY MINUTE, GRATEFUL TO STILL BE ABLE TO GET TOGETHER WITH OLD FRIENDS WHILE MAKING NEW FRIENDS AND TALK ABOUT THE PAST MEMORIES WHILE MAKING NEW MEMORIES. THERE NEVER WILL BE ANOTHER GRATEFUL DEAD, JERRY, BRENT, BOBBY, PHIL, MICKEY AND BILLY. WHAT THEY DID FOR US, FOR MUSIC, FOR LIFE AND FOR THE JAM BAND SCENE AND ALL THE JAM BANDS THAT ARE AROUND TODAY AND IN THE FUTURE IS BECAUSE OF THEM.. THEIR MUSIC TRULY WILL NEVER STOP. THANK YOU BOYS FOR THE MUSIC, THE FRIEND'S AND THE MEMORIES OLD AND NEW, THANK YOU FOR THE LONG STRANGE TRIP THAT I WILL TAKE TILL THE DAY I'M LAID TO REST. NFA FAMILY (~);-}
