    You hit the nail on the head with so many of these, especially the Book Box and TikTok conversations! Also your audio on this is so soothing 💛

    totally agree about book boxes (i’m thinking about going to book only but there’s occasionally something i really want and it sucks me in 😭) and also romantasy- you are so right!!!

      Yeah I did the maths and realised if I went book only and then bought the items I wanted secondhand I would save so much money 😅

    I like french flaps on poetry collections as it means I don't need a book mark. It also allows more space for review excerpts from critics which can help give more insight into the poems. I can see why they'd be annoying on fiction books. Enjoyed these topics! I've never bought book boxes or whatever those are. Buying a beautiful edition of a book or a hardback is a good enough treat for me.

      that's really interesting about the french flaps in poetry books! I don't read poetry so never come across that before

    16:03 Tolkien was not an atheist. He was Catholic, and his religion had a lot of influence on his writing. I am not particularly knowledgeable of the influences, but he himself said that LOTR is "fundamentally religious and Catholic work; unconsciously so at first, but consciously in the revision" in his letters.

      Yes someone else commented this, my mistake! I was taught at school that he was atheist and never questioned it but now I know I am incorrect :)

    5:54 I feel like pop culture references are more tolerable the more recognizable the reference is. If you reference The Godfather or Harry Potter (god forbid), most people are going to get it because they’ve just been solidified in the cultural zeitgeist. Also, in books set in the modern world, it feels weird to me if there AREN’T any recognizable pop culture staples. Like what would the world even be like if Star Wars didn’t come out to completely change the landscape of movie merchandise?

    9:49 I haven’t read all of Austen’s books but how can Pride and Prejudice be your least favorite when Sense and Sensibility is right there

    In my opinion, TikTok has done damage to the book community more than helped it. It’s a lot more popular to read now but I think that also diluted a lot as well in regard to the quality of writing, printing, etc. it’s sad to see. I got into the book sphere in 2018 and I just don’t like where it’s brought us personally (I also just dislike tik tok as a whole so maybe I’m just bias 😂)

      I think I agree. Making reading more popular has been wonderful and definitely given more opportunities for authors, but tiktok definitely encourages such a fast pace of production that authors are being pressured to release books quicker and quality is dipping as a result. 10 years ago waiting 1-3 years between books from an author was normal and now people can't cope with that 😭

    so I guess it is unpopular that I like French flap... it is supposed to be used as a bookmark

    • @LiteraryLily
      @LiteraryLily  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      actually it's not! French flaps are designed to make a book like more premium and also give the publisher more space for reviews/blurbs/info about the book. A lot of books with french flaps are too big to use them as bookmarks 😊

    I really enjoyed the video but I have to make a HUGE correction on something you said: J.R.R. Tolkien was not "a major atheist". He was actually a lifelong devout Catholic, and Lord of the Rings has many biblical elements throughout the story. Maybe you were thinking of another author. Hope this helps 😃. Have a great day!

    • @LiteraryLily
      @LiteraryLily  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      ah interesting, I wonder why I was taught he was an atheist at school 😂

    • @XfileSeeker22

      @@LiteraryLily Oh wow 🤣 You know what... I bet you're thinking of author C.S. Lewis (Tolkien's bestfriend). C.S. Lewis was an atheist, and became a Christian (hence his latter works). People often talk about/ teach them together because of the contrast.. I bet that's who you were thinking of 😃

    • @LiteraryLily
      @LiteraryLily  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@XfileSeeker22 nope! I was definitely taught that CS Lewis was Christian and Tolkien was atheist and that Tolkien hated how much CS lewis based Narnia on the bible! It was when we were learning about books inspired by or based on other works… who knows where that teacher got that from 😂

    • @XfileSeeker22
      @XfileSeeker22 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@LiteraryLily Interesting, the teacher somehow got it mixed up... it's actually switched. I don't know if you ever read Lord of the Rings (it's my all-time favorite novel), or if you ever saw the movies, but you can see the Biblical elements and similes in the story 😃

    Tiktok is a double edge sword. It made reading more popular and accessible. However, the books that are popular on booktok are usually smut romance-fantasy. People are reading more but nit reading not thought-provoking books.
    I hate French-flaps!
