    This “white people can’t write about other’s people culture” seems such an American way of viewing things. I don’t honestly know what white even means. I’m French and I have family roots in Italy, Spain, Morocco and Ireland… but I consider myself white. Those cultures are all so different! There isn’t a white culture ??? And what a sad thing to think that you can only write about what you know. Does that mean I can’t write about the Roman Empire era or the 1800’s Ireland ? And what if a Mexican person isn’t connected to their roots do they still get to write about Mexico ? Trying so much to put people into boxes doesn’t work.

    • @choihaeki
      @choihaeki 2 ปีที่แล้ว +283

      This. What if that 'white person' grew up and lived in Mexico and wanted to write about it, can't they do that? I mean, I will read and love a book written by someone who isn't "of that culture that is focused on the book" as long as it is well researched and had proof reads by people of said culture or something like that. I get that we want diversity in our authors and what POC some attention but we should also allow authors to explore and grow.

      I'm African American but my DNA also says I'm indigenous and white. I live in an urban environment but my family roots go back to North and South Carolina as well as the Bahamas.
      The average person has a lot of background and history thats not monolithic but what you know to your core should be the front. If I was to write a book using Choctaw culture and words that would be putting my voice over Choctaw people who grew up in a Choctaw community. Same as if I wrote about the Bahamas and Gullah people.
      But yes I could write a book about a Black character having a conversation or something about the different roots or exploration of them.
      As long as you keep it mind what experiences you could actually talk about or properly credit the people you get info from for the parts you have slacking in some areas

      @@imabookworm Here's my personal opinion (I rated it 3 stars and I've read both books til the end):
      - Why you should read it:
      • Good characters + diversity
      The story follows multiple p.o.v's of different people. All 6 main characters differ from one another, and nobody is "perfect". It gives for an entertaining story, especially when you get to see what each and every one of them is thinking from their own perspective. Plus, there's racial diversity and LGBTQ+ representation. This is definitely the highpoint of the book.
      • It deals with real-world issues in its own fantastical way.
      Without spoiling anything, I'll just say there's a lot of capitalism in Ketterdam.
      - Why you shouldn't read the book:
      • Weak plot
      Especially in Six of Crows there isn't much of a plot, the story mostly focuses on the characters and their lives from before (lots of flashbacks).
      • Takes long for action to begin
      Like I said, if you're in it for the plot, don't start with the book. It takes ages for anything to start happening. It's mostly preparations and then when it gets to that point where we can finally experience something fun and scary and exciting, it ends really fast and we are back to the long, long talks about their past or discussions/preparations.
      All in all, for me this was a mediocre read. The writing is good, and everything flows really well, but too slow for my liking. If you're someone who's just starting out with the fantasy genre, this is a "fun" read, but if you're like me who prefers action over character arcs, don't start or you'll get bored.
      However, the second book (Crooked Kingdom) is definitely better when it comes to the plot, there's more tension, so I prefer the second over the first book.

    "white people shouldn’t write about other cultures" is really weird mindset to me cause like, does that mean I can write just about white people from my country?? Am I supposed to not be inspired by existing cultures to creat new ones in my fantasy world? And since we are at it, are people not allowed to write fantasy books inspired by European history when they are not from Europe? Or not write abou mythology from a different country? That just doesn't make sense. And then if someone really "played it safe" and wrote just about their culture, it wouldn't be inclusive enough and that's gonna be also an issue. I really just can't imagine how would anyone write any good story and not writing about other cultures as well...

      That's especially annoying because people say that like everyone else can write about any culture they want... unless they're white??? Like wtf, do they not realise that's discrimination in itself? (And if you don't think so you can look up the definition for yourself...) You can't broaden your knowledge by writing about other types of people PURELY because of your SKIN COLOUR? (Which is also segregation, btw.) Like, just think about it for more than a second, please. I get when you want things to be written WELL, but to be BANNED from writing them at all? That's absurd. Ugh, people that think like that seem bigoted and need more education in that area.

    My thing about Book 1 Cardan is that he seems terrible when you judge him through a human lens, but for people who are super into that mythology, he’s a peach compared to most creatures in the folklore. Personally what I love about Holly Black’s faerie books is that she balances the scary with the fantastical really well. As opposed to like Smeyer writing vampires who are essentially harmless, just shiny. Like Cardan is actually scary, as he should be as fae. Now you could argue that the depiction of the bully romance in Cardan’s case is like, irresponsible or harmful or something because it goes too far, but the context matters. Cardan is not human. He doesn’t and shouldn’t have human morals. I think it’s a bonus to the book that the terrifying monster love interest is ACTUALLY monstrous. That being said, I wonder if the whole series might have fit better on an adult fantasy shelf instead…

      I wouldn't say that Twi!vamps are actually totally harmless though, unless we're talking exclusively in terms of what we actually see them do on the pages. But..yeah. I think that's something which is a conflict for a lot of people...some people like their nonhumans perfectly inhuman, and others like their nonhumans essentially like humans+some-added-stuff. And that probably is why certain things do hit so very differently for different people.

    As an Enemies-to-Lovers enthusiast, I'd argue that Friends-to-Lovers is actually a lot harder to do... simply because a lot of FtL pairings I read kind of fall flat because there's not really any reason for the two parties to... not be together, and the coming together part is a bit too easy? Like, the only instances of Childhood Friends to Lovers that are well-done to me are a) Winter and Jacin from The Lunar Chronicles, b) Will and Elizabeth from Pirates of the Caribbean, c) Buttercup and Wesley from The Princess Bride.

      I read one Enemies to Lovers recently which makes me doubtful that a good one exists. The book I'm referring to is What's Not to Love by Emily Webberly and her partner, it was pretty ugh, at portions it was okay, certainly better than the other books I read in September and October, er except Instructions For Dancing at least had some charm. Either way unhauling both. And don't trust the authors of either, especially after looking up the synopsis for Nicola Yoon's other books, Instructions for Dancing is definitely the best one.
      Another Enemies to Lovers, or sort of, this could be loosely interpreted as such, but also Fake Dating book I read this year, that was also bad, was She Drives Me Crazy. I live the cover of it though, keeping the book jacket, but yikes. Way too much wrong with that. I am going to type a couple of cute scenes, so I have them to reread. There was a third scene that was cute at the time but then the author went and ruined it later on since ifScottiehadn't donethe thign she didthere, it wouldn't have given Charlotte ammuniton, whichmeant that what Scottie thought of as a heroic act actually hurt Irene, indirectly, allowed Charlotte to play the way she did, very ew. But that's not even the book's main problem, all the characters were awful, except maybe one and somtiems Irene was all right, just would've been nice if she were in a better novel.

    I'm latina and i recently read a book where the main characters where Mexican and it was steeped in Mexican culture and slang and it was SO well done i really thought the author was latina. So I was shocked to find out she was actually Asian (who was raised in a predominantly Mexican neighborhood so that makes sense.) I've read a handful of other books written by white people that were also done REALLY well (and/or respectful.) So you're absolutely right that it can be done but it's a sticky situation. It's why Idk where I stand on the whole "people shouldn't write outside their culture" thing because while I understand why people have a problem, I HAVE ALSO seen it done SO well that I can't in good conscious be gatekeepy.

      Sorry. This will be a long response.
      the second book is more sad.
      I don’t remember passages exactly because it has been a while since I read them.
      Just keep in mind that each character’s story is tragic. I will be going over book 1.
      Wylan’s story is tragic because of his father. (Spoilers but not too many). His father thinks he is stupid and worthless because if his struggle to read well. Tutors were impatient with him which leads to a dark incident. I won’t spoil it there. It is kind of sad but when he joins the Crows, he becomes more confident, finds a purpose, and uses his skills as a demolition expert.
      Jesper is a gambler which made him leave home because he left his family in debt and he uses the heists to raise the money back to pay off the debt.
      Kaz’s story is complex but it involves his brother dying which you get flashbacks to in the beginning of the book so not too spoilery. He is getting revenge on the crime boss behind that and since that happened, he became cold and ruthless. To be honest, that is basically his character so…
      Inej’s story is heartbreaking. She is enslaved (and correct me if I am wrong) whored out and many girls have to deal with the same fate. Kaz helps bail her out by selling the crow club, eventually. Her goal is to save the girls there.
      Nina’s story is in the middle. She falls for Matthias who was taught to be against Grisha (she is a heart-render) but they teach each other and she gets him out of his shell a bit. But other Grisha see them together making her forced to have him imprisoned. Obviously, it makes him angry and it takes time to trust her. Her story is really sad when they give her a drug (forgot the name) that elevates her powers, but the caveat is it can be addictive to Grisha. So she is dealing with a drug addiction, but she gets better with support from her friends.
      I was so invested in the twists and turns and shipping that I kind of forgot to cry. Bit everyone is different. So brace yourself, but have fun reading it. There are funny moments and the dynamics between the Crows is fun and heartfelt. Each one is different but they mesh well together.
      Book 2 is another story all together.

    The Throne of Glass got me back into reading many years ago. ACOTAR helped keep the momentum going, but if I had to pick btwn the two to ever re-read, I'd pick TOG. I wonder if I'd still feel the same upon an actual re-read. I like your observation about how a person might enjoy (or not) ACOTAR depending on how deep into YA fantasy they are when they read it.

      I read both book series as an adult and I’d enjoyed TOG waaaay more.

      Alright, when I was younger, I loved to read but then I kind of lost that up until about two years ago when I first picked up Harry Potter after some coaxing from parents. After that I read Narnia and Twilight and then fell out of reading again until I read The Cruel Prince and TOG this summer. I’m currently reading the ACOTAR series and loving it but I would agree that TOG was my favorite of the two, which seems to be a rather unpopular opinion among Sarah J Maas fans. It just seemed a bit more grown up and I absolutely loved all the characters. And I feel like I will never be able to love an MC as much as I loved Celaena/ Aelin

      Same with me. Found a new home in TOG and read ACOTAR because its the same author nothing can go wrong! Didn't like ACOTAR cause of the characters and how problematic and confusing it is but dont hate it. I still recommend it to people cause its a 50/50 sorta book. But think people have blown it up on Tiktok as a book that's homely and perfect and great no matter who you are. But its very much for the fresh people who havent been able to read for a while or want to dip a toe in fantasy ya and dont mind the problematic things that happen in there.

    • @yukiandkanamekuran
      @yukiandkanamekuran 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      SAME. TOG is definitely much better in terms of a fantasy that people should get into. While it can have a lot of similar problems to ACOTAR, it's definitely more well written in my opinion. It's also the first SJM series that I read.

    In terms of the “white people shouldn’t write about other cultures”, I think it’s too unspecific. Because that seems to encourage lack of diversity. Because yes the goal is more diversity in publishing, but when a vast number of published authors are still white, to limit rep in their books limits rep in general. Which is in its own way detrimental to the entire concept of diversity and equality, which is normalizing it. So with that said I think the perspective needs to be clarified. White people shouldn’t write about the experience of being an indivisible of a different cultural/ethnic background, no person should ever do that, as that experience and perspective on the issue is unique to those who share it. But if a story is not about cultural experience, that shouldn’t limit authors from including ethnically diverse casts of characters.

      I think it's fine for them to have diverse casts of characters, but I don't like when they write a story where the main character is a poc and the culture is very important to the story because then it can be inaccurate and unrelatable

    • @bluedune8458
      @bluedune8458 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      @@mahi93162 Exactly. Culture and experience being central to the plot is a whole other thing from just having a main character happen to be poc. Although for curiosities sake how do you feel about fantasy? In this situation it usually applies to contemporary of historical fiction, but in fantasy where the cultures are entirely made up and likely only loosely based on any real human mythologies, do you think a character who is poc should still have their culture not be central to the plot? Because when it comes to worldbuilding I can only assume it needs to be addressed to some degree. And I haven’t yet made up my mind on how I feel about this yet.

    • @lunamagicath1658
      @lunamagicath1658 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I think authors should keep including the cultures but they really need to stop emphasising the race. I've read so many books that depict POC as food and then every other chapter they refer to their race and it kind of feels forced. But I've loved the books that have something from a country like a horse from Asia or an outfit from India but its kept relevant to the plot rather than an "Oh look I'm not racist"

    I think my biggest issue with ACOTAR wasn't really the writing or that I wasn't in the YA headspace (I literally read them all back to back and love plenty of other YA books that aren't the best written) but there was some problematic stuff sprinkled in there that just rubbed me the wrong way... I don't really care about characters being toxic (kind of) in books because I'm a grown adult, I know it's fiction and how to separate it from reality. But just some of the s*xual assault stuff and the way she handled Tamlin's PTSD and just character overall was timed extremely poorly and not not talked about well....... I think the scene that sticks out the most to me is when they're in the library that is home to the priestess SA survivors and Mr Reeses Pieces makes sexual comments and innuendos to Feyre about banging in there. I don't mind erotic stuff in books, I love it, but I thought that was timed in possibly the worst spot imaginable. Maybe I just have a stronger feeling and feel more sensitive about that stuff because of my history as someone with a PTSD diagnosis/SA survivor but it really put me off of SJM as a writer and the ACOTAR series as a whole. I remember thinking the first book wasn't too bad, just a little corny and then the more I read the worst I felt about it. The newest book about Nesta though.......... I will openly say I hate it. No deeper reasons, just thought it sucked. If other people love the series though, that's fine. I just can't get behind it.

Idk if she was trying to make the characters relatable but the whole thing with Tamlin being abusive and the Rhys was all "I would never DREAM of that" but then he does the same shit but more hidden. But because Tamlin did worse stuff aside from the relationship he was this big horror. And then the whole thing with Mor and her sexuality just made me feel awkward cause it felt so forced and like it was just there rather than a she been a reject cause of it and has felt hated and confused cause of her sexuality. And then the whole thing of having sex through roof tops when their people are already struggling with their homes after the war also messed with me. And the whole birth thing and keeping a woman from the truth about having a child because its not just her choice and Rhys wanted the kid and keep her from the truth for her own sake just disgusted me. Overall it left a bad taste and I thought I would be safe and then ACOSF came out and the snippets i saw made me hate it even more

Like I'm mexican, if you're gonna write me as just being this girl who loves tacos and tequila, get me the hell out of your story. Culture is a big part of how a person is raised, it shapes our thoughts, our values. If you're gonna make it a personality trait then maybe....don't?

    Acotar was my gateway drug into reading! I found your acotar summary videos after reading the series and I thought "ok these are way too long but maybe I'll watch 15 minutes.." I ended up watching all of them haha.. I absolutely love your humor and it got me SO excited to explore the fantasy genre. When I was younger, I had sporadic periods where I was obsessed with reading. I never realized what genre I liked until now

    I think a book is what it does to you. That’s why I absolutely love ACOTAR, it was one of the first fantasy books I read and it just completely beamed me away. I am in love with the characters and This whole universe was an escape for me in a hard time. Also, I think compared to the YA romances I read before, especially the female characters are so much better developed and (especially Nesta) just is a badass and I love how cassian treats her and women in general.

    I just discovered your channel. Love it. I also really really liked ACOTAR, even the second one! I normally find the second book in a series to be not that good, and I truly liked this. The enemies to lovers thing... I love it haha. Guilty pleasure. The Grisha books... I read them. And I loved the world-building. And... somehow I just couldn't connect emotionally to the series. Haven't read six of crows yet!

    I only read book own of Divergent and like it, but couldn't finish book two.
    Miscommunication trope... I can only deal with it if it's something like the characters literally can't share something or else they would be in danger- like in Shadow of the Fox. It's more of a "keep a secret so I don't die" thing. Other than that it just stresses me out in a bad way.
    I don't find a lot of books with male protagonists. They don't appear in YA/NA fantasy, so get almost excited when I see one. Lol. Diversity! (Haha).
    A book being praised all the time, being talked about in a way that make it seem like one of the best books ever, but when someone reads it they are not as pleased as they thought they would be-.is an overated book. I found Caraval to be pretty bad... The plot was messy. I liked the other two books though.

      I found it hard to read at first, but I got used to using clues to know who was saying what lol. It’s the only Sally Rooney book I’ve read, and I really enjoyed it. Not the kind of enjoyment where it makes you happy at all, though. Totally put me through the wringer!
      I thought that there was some character development, but not the super in your face kind. It was just interesting seeing how aspects of their perspectives and characteristics progressed or regressed depending at where they were in life. But yeah, I could see how it’s definitely not for everyone lol!

    "I hate tropes where the girl is battle-hardened and a badass, but some boy softens her"
    I mean, same. It's definitely time to get rid of a lot of those kinds of tropes.
    That's why the men in my upcoming novels actually help to strengthen the women. One even teaches the woman how to fight.

    • @emmanarotzky6565
      @emmanarotzky6565 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      “Girl can’t fight until a boy teaches her” is a worse trope IMO. But like all tropes it depends on how you do it. At a certain point you just have to ignore the genders and do what you want with the characters, because if you view every character through the lens of their gender then you end up reading into things. Like maybe it makes total sense for your boy character to teach your girl character how to fight and it has nothing to do with girls vs. boys. And maybe it makes total sense for the soft character to “save” or “fix” the battle-hardened character regardless of anyone’s gender.

    • @Shalaena
      @Shalaena ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@emmanarotzky6565 Let me clarify that it's "pirates teach aristocrat how to fight". So you're right, gender could be ignored for context as to why it's a good or bad trope. The battle-hardened woman being softened trope bothers me more because it feeds into the "women have to be soft and sweet etc etc" nonsense.
