    Daniel Fisher, Sweetwater's madman of modulars, demonstrates the power of the Moog Model 10, a meticulous, limited-edition re-creation of the first compact modular synthesizer system created by Dr. Robert Moog in 1971. Engineered for portability, the Model 10 is housed in a road-ready Tolex-clad wood cabinet hand-assembled with 11 discrete analog modules, including three 900-Series oscillators, venerated for their magical sonic depth; and a 907 Fixed Filter Bank, acclaimed for its massive sound-shaping and timbral potential. The predecessor of the Model 15, the Model 10 design is focused on purity of sound and ease of use, while delivering the immense sonic depth and dimensionality you expect only from vintage Moog modular synthesizers.
    During the intro and outro music, Daniel is playing the Model 10 through a Source Audio Nemesis Delay:

    This instrument had been used upon Styx's 1972 self-title debut "Styx." Styx would have purchased their ARP 2600s after this, meaning all synthesizer heard on this first record was produced by the Moog Model 10 Synthesizer. Dennis DeYoung hadn't been interested in the hassle of these early synthesizers, but one of the studio technicians or engineers had suggested they would program the device and Dennis would focus on playing for the recording.
    All information I just expressed is sourced from the third-party record keeping at Styxnet.com, of a 1981 Contemporary Keyboard magazine interview with Dennis DeYoung. Found here via Archive.org's Wayback Machine: web.archive.org/web/20060502120508fw_/www.styxnet.com/deyoung/print/int_ck81_1.html
    In case you're curious, Dennis has implicated the use of many instruments throughout Styx's first ten years. These include the ARP Solina String Ensemble, ARP 2600 (to which Dennis has said John Curlwuski owned their own model of and would play live), ARP Pro Soloist, and, of course, what most Styx fans will identify with Styx are the Oberheim synthesizers. The ones I know that have been implicated by Dennis as having been used are the four voice, the OB-1, OB-X, and OB-8.
    Dennis DeYoung had repeatedly expressed distaste for early synthesizers, referring to the use of patch cables, lack of presets, and the constant need to tune the synthesizers even mid-performance. In later years with the Oberheim OB-8, for instance, Dennis has suggested he would personally tune the instrument before a live performance, rather than having anyone else do that for him. Dennis has also repeatedly expressed distaste of pitch bend wheels, and has instead expressed fondness toward vibrato effects stemming from your fingers, like via aftertouch on the ARP Pro Soloist.
    If anyone has a question regarding Styx's keyboard capacities, like organ or piano, please feel free to ask. I feel Styx to be my favorite artist, and I feel I may be able to help you in answering your question, from what I've already read, seen or become aware of.

    A lot of science fiction and horror movies of all budget production levels… they would have never been made, or became the cult classics that they are had it not been for the model 10 and the minimoog alike. I was watching a documentary about THE SHINING where one of the production assists was telling of how Stanley specifically called for a minimoog to be used to produce the ambience as Jack Torrance was looking into the daze at that model of the the hedge maze
    And then you have R2D2 and his sample and hold filter isolation “chirps”, along with the sounds of the weapons being fired and the blast doors… I think Tobe Hooper even used a minimoog to produce his score of Texas Chainsaw Massacre in 1974, along with household tools… and then you have Phantasm and Dawn Of The Dead… clearly a minimoog in action for those, as well as the Rickenbacker model 4001 bass guitar

  • @multistring
    @multistring ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hey Daniel… thanks for another outstanding Modular application clip. I’m responding to your invitation to ask questions. I have a specific Moog Modular ask. Is there a remote possibility of you illustrating how the “Clamp Trig” portion of the Moog 921 module works and can be accessed or controlled with or (in my case) without a 953 keyboard controller? As I become more and more familiar with my Model 15 the clamping point feature still stumps me. What’s the scope of it’s application in sound design? In addition… is there a patching strategy one could apply to creating glissando on a Moog Model 10 or 15, again, without using a 953 controller? Excellent presentations! Huge fan!

    • @sweetwater
      @sweetwater  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi multistring. A few years ago, I read a forum post that went deeper into the uses of Clamp Trig on the Moog 921. I understood some of it but, seeing as I don't have regular access to a Moog 921 Oscillator, I didn't get to try it out immediately. But what I gathered is that when the Clamp Trig is fired, the oscillator is reset. But, unlike a normal Osc Sync, you can choose what level it resets to (instead of always resetting to zero on Osc Sync). This will result in new wave shapes. Hope that helps a little. -_Daniel_

    HI Daniel
    Question about Sequencer 960/962 triggering a Behringer Modular 55 (with S-Trigger) and an Eurorack Keyboard (e.g. Matriarch) is transposing the sequence. But when I connect The Pitch of the Eurorack Keyboard (over CP3A-0 Input 2, Input 1 = Sequencer CV-Out) than the pitch goes up (more than 1 oct.). Why is this and how can I solve it? Thanks for answere.

    After looking carefully at this presentation of the Model 10, I understand why I mess around hours and hours with soundshaping on my little GM. I wasn't aware the GM has most of the "modules" presented here too. This explains my excitment for my device.
    Of course, going real modular brings far more capabilities: Still a lot of money to spend.

  • @cornerliston
    @cornerliston 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice to see, thanks for the demo.
    I'm a little bit concerned about the quality inspection on this because of the two screws on the face plate on the filter bank that's so tight they make the face plate bend. At 10:49, clearly shows the second screws on both top and bottom row make the face plate bend inwards.
    If this was a Behringer no one would expect anything else, but this is a premium priced Moog …
    I would also take a look at the horisontal alignment of the upper row modules : )
    Just the kind of attention of detail you would expect from a product like this.

    Daniel, you sent that analog beast of beauty through the digital setting on the delay pedal? LOL

    • @sweetwater
      @sweetwater  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Roger. I know that seems counter intuitive, but the Digital setting allows the echoes to be the most accurate reproductions of the original analog source.
      Given the kind of upper-frequency stereo imaging I wanted to create, an artificially rolled-off high end (simulating analog bucket brigade technology) was not the right fit for this particular demonstration. Each of the delay types on the Nemesis Delay is perfect for various sonic situations, but starting with Digital mode and then using its parameters to tweak to taste was exactly what I needed for this performance. Thanks for watching!

    If you want something that sounds great - certainly in this ballpark, but 1/5 the price, and even less than that second hand - Roland System 500.

      Hi mamakuproject. Matriarch's oscillators are based on the Minimoog oscillators, which were based on the 921 oscillators found in the Moog Model 15 (as opposed to the Model 10's 901 oscillators). Thanks for watching!

    Great. Another Moog modular the price of a car! I guess it’s more reasonable than the Emerson modular that’s the price of a house.

      If you have to make that comment then it’s not marketed for you. Moog makes PLENTY of new stuff every year for the average synth geek, this is for the professionals that can afford it. Let them have that too. It’s also just so cool that they do this, when would ever be able to get an old one of these close to this price?

      Reginald Mizer patronizing? More like not being an envious cheap skate and understanding there are markets for everyone. what POS car you getting for 10k? Unless it’s used, but in that case any synth is the price of a car because car prices go from free to inifinity $.

      For me is possible to buy it in 2023 because i go in pension and the Italian State give me a good sum of money.
      I’m professor.
      Then, if is important, i send to Moog an advance to reserve the synth and the balance will be paid in 2023.
      If this production is sure for all 2023, no problem.

    Is it possible to make something similar with the Behringer 55 modules but instead of duophonic make it polyphonic? I'd really like to have a polyphonic eurorack moog clone but I'm a hard time wrapping my head around what would need to be added to make that possible. Or even just be able to have multiple voices played, not controlled via a keyboard.

    What do you prefer... System 15 or this?

    • @sweetwater
      @sweetwater  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Andromeda Music. Although the Model 10 VCOs have a fatter sound, the Model 15's VCOs have better pitch stability. So I would probably lean toward the Model 15 if they were both available and were at roughly the same price. (But it's a very slight lean as I've had great fun with both.) In time and with mindful consideration in module selection, you’ll have that and then some in Eurorack. If you can get a Behringer D for $300, by the time you spend what this would cost you’ll have a pretty sick setup. Just wait until your old neighbor, or an uncle or relative passes away and scoop one of these up for free.
