I only watch your shearing. But everyone knows how analogues work. Another shear that was many years old popped up on my feed. The guy chased the sheep down, cornered him, and with two other men forced him into the barn where one of the men did a close shave. He left the sheep with so many nicks (deep wounds), the sheep looked like it had been in a knife fight. There was no apology, and no talk of lanolin. They all acted like, hey good job mate. 😮 It made me really admire your work even more.

Oh man, these poor sheep, having a wool quality that mats so fast. That comparison to sheep that missed four years of shearing really emphasized that an unlucky single year missed can really mess up a herd, and that the owners tried their best within all that chaos.

You are a fantastic example of someone who has empathy for the sheep, but doesnt let that cloud your decisions.
So many people who love their animals will see their animals in distress like this and won't be able to handle it. What is best for the animal isn't always to baby the animal, its to hurry up so you can prevent stress and overheating. Often babying the animal will actually stress the animal out more; as you said, the animal can feel your energy.
But, at the same time, you cannot forget empathy altogether. It's a balance, and it takes practice to show empathy without letting it slow you down. You learn with time and experience how to calm and reassure the animal without stressing it out more.

How fast wool felts depends on the quality of the wool. Some wools felt extremely readily, others are more resistant. Conditions also matter - heat, humidity, and motion also play a role. I was also surprised at how badly these fleeces were felted, considering that they were only (if I remember correctly) about 6 months past their yearly shearing.
