I haven’t had this in many years and not sure I’ve ever made it. I would mix the Mayo, sugar and salt together before mixing in with the peas to insure they get combined well.
There’s nothing better than bacon grease! I was raised on it also. Love wilted lettuce and green onions with corn bread! Ummm! Thanks Greg for this wonderful pea salad, you’re right I’m in Ohio and in the summer’s cold salads are so refreshing! Thank you!
I've made a layered salad that has all of these ingredients plus shredded lettuce. I will definitely try this because the peas are the best part without the mess of finely shredding the lettuce. Thanks for sharing!
My Mother-in-law made this a lot. She cubed her cheese in little cubes. If it was the primary dish with cornbread she put hard boiled egg in to add protein. Instead of sugar she just used Miracle Whip as it’s sweet. I should make some fur my husband, she passed in 1973, he would probably really enjoy this.
I have also made a simple pea salad with canned LeSuer peas, drained, chopped onion, and mayo. Some people like adding a hard boiled egg to it, but it's delicious without it. Quick and easy and goes great with any meal
I didn't grow up having this but was introduced to it for the first time when I worked at a big insurance company. They had a cafeteria & pea salad was in the salad bar. I tried it & loved it. It was just peas, a little onion, shredded cheddar, mayo & a little salt. I tried & tried to make it but it never tasted right until I used real mayo, I'd been using Miracle Whip. I like Miracle Whip & it's my choice in quite a few instances....but when I make pea salad, it's gotta be mayo to produce just the right taste. It's a quick, easy, delicious cold salad.
I have never heard of Pea Salad but that looks delicious and I love peas. So you can guess what I’m making this weekend. Thank you for sharing that recipe. 😍
Grew up with and still make this delicious dish. Only difference is adding chopped hard boiled eggs and replacing sugar with paprika. You are correct the sweet onion when available is an excellent choice over the usual red onion. Also myself and family prefers uncooked frozen pas over canned for the firmness and little crunch. Makes a difference imo. Thank you for the video!
Finally. Someone who cuts onions like I do. Thank you! I’ve never put bacon or cheese in my pea salad. Think hubby will love it so I’m giving it a try. Awesome.
We used to make a 7-layer salad. We layered lettuce, onion, cheese, bacon, I think egg, peas, and sealed the top with mayonnaise. At serving time we mixed it.
I love this salad it reminds me of my mom. Thanks Greg i found you in my feed and I subscribed. I like the frozen peas thawed better my mom used canned baby peas
Yeah this looks delicious. The easiest way to make sure your wet things are doing well it's to use a salad spinner as it spins off all the excess water
I subscribed to youre channel for several reasons, I grew up in the 60's and 70's in the midwest, Minnesota and Wisconsin and while I don't remember Pea Salad as such it rings a bell probably at a church pot luck. We never had air cinditioning or a freezer, the freezer on top the icebox was so small nothing fit so no frozen peas. I save bacon grease as well thanks for the video I will be making this salad today looks realy delicious.
i remember bacon grease too hardened and Great for pancakes! Just remember whatever nitrates were in the bacon are still there so take it easy. not healthy stuff
Hi Greg, just found your channel and have never heard of or tried pea salad however your recipe looks delicious and easy to make so I'll be trying it soon. Thank you!
2 (15 ounce) cans kidney beans 2 stalks celery, chopped 1/2 cup chopped onion 1/4 cup sweet pickles, chopped 3 hard boiled eggs, chopped 1/2 cup of Miracle Whip or mayo
@@gregscumberlachiakitchen thank you so very much. It's sounds like it might just be it. I can remember the celery onion ,eggs and mayo, but that's it. I will make a salad for Easter and let you know how it turned out. The last time we has this was when we lived in Country Lakes, Woodridge, IL and went to The White Fence Farm Resturant. 4 salads were serve before meal arrived. Special of the day known for their chicken.
Yes, Hazel, I have. My mom used to make it. She was a very basic cook....nothing elaborate or fancy & no specific amounts. She drained & rinsed a can of dark red kidney beans. Chopped up 2 hard-boiled eggs. Added a little finely chopped onion , about a teaspoon of pickle relish (or dice a pickle) . Then she stirred in a couple tablespoons of Miracle Whip....added salt to taste. Hope that helps....if nothing else, maybe it'll provide a jumping off point for you.
@@hazelbrungard1623 well, everyone has their own way of making things. 🙂 I don't like celery so that might be why my mom didn't put that in her bean salad. For some reason she put relish. Just her take on it, I guess. Sounds like maybe Greg's recipe is what you wanted. That's great! 👋🙂
Nope! They're blanched or pre cooked so just thaw and make a salad. Of course you can use them in hot as well as cold recipes. You can add bacon as he is, chopped ham or chicken, peanuts, eggs, cheese, whatever you want! It is very versatile!❤

Love the music, too. Thanks!😎
I haven’t had this in many years and not sure I’ve ever made it. I would mix the Mayo, sugar and salt together before mixing in with the peas to insure they get combined well.
great tip..thank you
I'm going to make it your way. My mother only used cheese and mayo.
There’s nothing better than bacon grease! I was raised on it also. Love wilted lettuce and green onions with corn bread! Ummm! Thanks Greg for this wonderful pea salad, you’re right I’m in Ohio and in the summer’s cold salads are so refreshing! Thank you!
So good!
Love wilted lettuce!!
My mother in law put a couple of boiled eggs in hers. I love this salad. I will be making it soon. Thank you for the delicious reminder.
I've made a layered salad that has all of these ingredients plus shredded lettuce. I will definitely try this because the peas are the best part without the mess of finely shredding the lettuce. Thanks for sharing!
I just love this type of salad!! Especially since it has bacon in it! It’s so funny, I’m not a huge fan of hot peas, but I love them made into this!
Me too!!
My 15 children a 7 Grandchildren love this, we add Raisons too and celery sometimes.
Love pea salad and every time I cook bacon I use the bacon fat to make biscuits and tomato gravy
Tom-tomato gravy?? I'm intrigued.
May I ask what that is exactly. Never heard of it in my life. From California.
I cut up sweet gherkins and add to all these ingredients. I also like a cut up boiled egg. This is my favorite salad.
Sounds delicious!
I have also made a simple pea salad with canned LeSuer peas, drained, chopped onion, and mayo. Some people like adding a hard boiled egg to it, but it's delicious without it. Quick and easy and goes great with any meal
Great idea! Thanks for the ideas
Me,too.
This is one of my favorite recipes and is so delicious. Thanks for sharing this.
That looks so yummy, Greg! I had forgotten about pea salad, and I love it 🤣💕. Thank you for the reminder! Tennessee is calling you 🤣🤣😉
You are so welcome, and yes, I hear it calling...can't wait
Anything that starts out with bacon is a hit in my book
Exactly. I agree.
Never had this pea salad without hard boiled eggs too. Great salad!

Nor have I.
Willing 2 give it a try.. Will be Gr8 @ Daughters of American Revolution events we have several times a year.
You are so welcome, let me know how you like it Jolene
I love this salad! I used to be able to buy it in a local grocery store, but they quit carrying it. Thank you for the recipe!
You're welcome, as you see it is so easy to make
Making this tonight with small shell pasta and hard boiled eggs
One of my favorite salads.. great video..
Thank you Beth
I just started making this about a year ago. I make it different ways. With carrots or eggs. Last time was bacon. Love this salad! 😀
I love pea salad just like this. yummy

My mom used fresh frozen as do I. Prefer it this way but would eat it made with canned too.
I love pea salad!
I love pea salad and seeing the addition of bacon, that's good eating! All the bacon fit this time :)
I hate when it all fits and I don't get a few to nibble on...LOL
Not sure I've ever eaten pea salad. Going to have to try this though. Peas with bacon and onion sounds so good together. TFS
It's so good! Let me know how you like it
@@gregscumberlachiakitchen Hi Greg, I tried the pea salad for dinner last night and it was delicious. TFS and God bless.
Now that looks really good. Love all the tips from comments.
I also add some finely diced celery to mine for some crunch. Yummy, thank you.
Great idea!
This looks delicious and I like that it has no lettuce in it. The recipes with lettuce don't hold up as well.
Glad to have found your channel and am playing your old videos.
Welcome. I appreciate your watching. Have a blessed rest of your day Betty.
I grew up with this one too, good memories. Just started making it myself. Sooo delicious.
Thank you, 👍😊
My mom used to make a pasta salad with elbows, peas, spam, mayo and cheese
80-90 degrees is a cold day in a Texas summer! I make this salad and grill indoors!
I’m in Florida and when he was talking about it being hot at 80° or 90 I belly laughed😂😂😂
This looks so good!…Definitely putting this salad on the weekend menu! 🌻🐝
Hope you enjoy
I love this recipe. Enjoy watching you cook! Thanks for posting this.
Glad you enjoy it!
It may be an old recipe but its a great one. One of my favorite my grama would make along with the broccoli one.
It's so good!
I was thinking similarly...Peal Salad, Broccoli Salad, and Carrot Salad.
Great Recipe Thx 👌
I love this salad. We used to do it with shredded lettuce and crisp bacon on top just before serving.
I'll have to try that too...thanks for the tip
@@gregscumberlachiakitchen You bet! I should say that the shredded (iceberg) lettuce was on the bottom and the bacon was on top
Finally. Someone who cuts onions like I do. Thank you! I’ve never put bacon or cheese in my pea salad. Think hubby will love it so I’m giving it a try. Awesome.
the bacon and cheese make it so good.
Whoever says you shouldn’t save bacon fat is not from the South and their vegey’s don’t have much flavor LOL
We always saved it in the North as well....
We used to make a 7-layer salad. We layered lettuce, onion, cheese, bacon, I think egg, peas, and sealed the top with mayonnaise. At serving time we mixed it.
A real good classic!!!
Just made this not long ago.
It's wonderful & so refreshing in summertime when it's warm.
Hi Greg I just subscribed to your channel I watched the pea salad recipe it looks delicious. When my sister makes it she puts a boiled eggs in it
Thanks for subbing! I sometimes put egg in mine, but prefer it without. Again, thanks for joining our channel
Looking forward 2 trying this easy recipe. Thanx 4 sharing.
Hope you enjoy
I do tweak everyone’s recipes to make it my own😂❤
I love this salad it reminds me of my mom. Thanks Greg i found you in my feed and I subscribed. I like the frozen peas thawed better my mom used canned baby peas
I either blanch my frozen peas, or use canned.
This recipe reminds me of my mother too....
Think I miss my parents more, the older I get..
I've been making pea salad for 47 years, but never thought of bacon in it! Definitely will use bacon the next time I make it!
You should! It totally changes the taste/texture
I recently made some using real bacon bits, it was good but doing your own bacon is much better, in my opinion ( IMO)
JUST finding your channel. LOVE it!
We always use red onion and added water chestnuts cut in fourths. Haven’t thought of it lately...ty!
great tip on the water chestnuts, will have to try that
Yeah this looks delicious. The easiest way to make sure your wet things are doing well it's to use a salad spinner as it spins off all the excess water
Great tip!
It’s great frying croutons for other salads in bacon grease. We also fry okra in the South in bacon grease. 😀

Vidalias are the best!
The absolute best
I save my liquid Gold. 👍😁👍♥️
I have made this for many years. I always add jars boiled egg but not bacon. I’m going to try adding the bacon. Thank you.
You are so welcome!
Love it...and I have saved my bacon fat my whole life. :-)
I can’t wait to make this! It has been too long!
Looks really delicious, does it need time in the fridge for the flavors to get better?
It does meld the flavors together after an hour or so in the fridge.
Yum 😋
😋
Yes Trish, it is. It never disappoints
Ive been there, they have delicious fried gizzards!!!
I used to hate peas, but I like them now
I didn't like them much as a child, but now I love them.
I like that recipe it's close to the one that I already make I do add chopped boiled eggs to my 7:57
So yummy came across your channel so glad I did 😋
Me too. I hope you enjoy our videos
Love this !Just found you !
Bacon fat….the official condiment of the south!
Yummy❤
Bacon fat is liquid gold grew up on it and use it now
No bacon as I recall my grandmother made cheese onion fresh peas
Looks delicious however l dont like mayonnaise so l put ranch dressing and boiled eggs its really good
I’ll have to try that too. Thank you for the tip
Add celery, boiled eggs, shrimp, ham, chicken or turkey for a whole meal.
It would no longer be pea salad then,
Of course you save your bacon grease. How else could you make gravy?
What kind of gravy would it be without the bacon grease? The same kind that goes on broccoli, I guess!
Have you ever had red kidney bean salad?. If so. I can't remember how it's made.
2 (15 ounce) cans kidney beans
2 stalks celery, chopped
1/2 cup chopped onion
1/4 cup sweet pickles, chopped
3 hard boiled eggs, chopped
1/2 cup of Miracle Whip or mayo

oooh Onions. this used to be a deli or cafe offering. Hellmans mayo for me. Do you cook the peas or thaw. I better go back to listening.
Thawed only
I always save my bacon fat. My elderly mother worries about her cholesterol. SMH...
And how old is she ? Lol....😅
God bless her soul, ❤️🙏
What about the hard boiled eggs?
Not everybody makes pea salad using boiled eggs. My mom never did. Don't think the original pea salad
calls for them.
This is I the way I make our pea salad, except no bacon. My body doesn't agree with salt and additives used in bacon.
I wished they'd show the exact ingredients a d measurement instead of a transcript. Who's with me?
I don't use bacon but use boiled eggs instead.
Hey,Greg what kind of cheese?
Looks like colby jack cheese.
I have had it with black olives.
What Part of Ohio I'm From Cincinnati.
Wapakoneta
So the frozen peas were not cooked first?!

Has anyone ever made this salad and substituted greek yogurt for the mayonnaise? I have to watch my fat intake.
Simply Sarah does 1/2 and 1/2 greek yogurt and mayo.
I use half fat free Greek Yogurt and half low fat mayo. If you're wary of fats, try small cubes of lean smoked ham.
yes you can...it's good that way too
Maybe he like’s burnt bacon 🥓
It’s frustrating that you didn’t post the recipe.
It’s below in the description
music went on too long for me to watch
Oh,no!… you need to wash your hands !…leaking your fingers is just plain gross.
Drop the bacon. It is going to be soggy and will taste bad too. I add boiled egg to mine.
