I had a customer who every so often would clean out their pond and spread the pond muck on their lawn, I thought they were busy but Christ did that grass grow fast after. Great job and thanks for the video.
Looks awesome. If you want it to be even greener add a little iron. It'll make it a darker green and sort of acts like a sunscreen in stressed times. Try it you'll like it.
This has to be the #1 lawn improvement before/after video I have seen on TH-cam. Awesome job man! I had my yard composted today (San Antonio, TX). I'm hoping for the same results. Simular story, clay soil, compacted, contractor tore the soil up building the homes in this area 15 years ago and the ground is still struggling. However, I enjoy a challenge. 😉
Your ground is struggling likely because the builder took the valuable top soil and sold it off leaving you with garbage. Happens a lot here where I live.
Heather Sowell - Hi Heather. The service I used did a good job, but I may do it myself next time. It will be cheaper and great exercise. The service I used: Eco Lawn San Antonio (Brad Walser is the owner - great guy btw). Call him @ (210) 316-9444. The bottom line is I wanted to stimulate my soil with micro organisms and he delivered. He used a compost that's high in "nutrients" (manure based.. lol) and my grass responded VERY well. I have a variety of grasses; Bermuda and St Augustine. The Burmuda was the greenest I have ever seen it... the St Augustine... not so much. I expect that the extra Phosphorus has a better impact on the Bermuda. I could go on-and-on because it is my pet project. If you have any additional questions let me know and good luck! 😃
Good work and good job on a time-lapse my dad's lawn when I lived in Bakersfield to do exactly the same thing responded really well to manure but don't be afraid to Super over fertilize it because you can't kill that stuff and then it will have lots of fertilizer so I sometimes double or even triple the normal fertilizer. This is the proper way to dominate your Neighbors lawn especially artificial turf!
Nice to see a lawn tutorial from a California resident. I just fertilized and seeded my lawn with steer manure three days ago as it's cooling down here in So Cal. Not sure how often to water, but I knew I had to keep it moist initially so I may have broken the law, as I've watered for three days. I'll give it a break for the next couple days.
Organic cow manure is a great supply of nitrogen. I've been using it on my lawn and the results are very good: a darker green lawn, healthier grass plants and good growth - requiring more frequent mowing. That's how I like it. The manure smell isn't noticeable after a couple of days.
I had to laugh when you mentioned not telling your wife about spreading manure on your lawn. My Dad was to buy steer manure to fertilize the lawn but instead bought and spread chicken manure. Oooops!! Neighbours 10 zip codes away could smell it. It took a long time for him to live that down...this happened decades ago and still makes me chuckle. I own a horse and know the benefits of livestock manure. Black gold!!
Wow! The results of a beautiful lawn w/ no detaching, no aerating nor reseeding!...it almost hard to believe! Well... One thing we do have in Puerto Rico, is MANURE. I'm on it KG, Thanks!
None of those things are necessary for a nice lawn (well, except for seeding if you have bare spots). This worked because manure is simply nitrogen. All he did was fertilize his lawn.
Thank you for the great tip! Put some manure over some dead areas in my lawn and man what a difference. Cheaper yet most effective way to bring back the life of Bermuda. Manure, Scotts and Milorganite!
We did this to a country home with horse manure from the neighboring horse barn onto plain dirt with grass seed. Can I tell you... It stunk heavy for about a week, but a month went by and it was the freshest greenest grass I've seen for a while...
Looks great, I will try this in the U.K. synthetic grass has its uses but does nothing for the native birds and wildlife. My wife just watches me work too, whilst giving me “helpful “ advice. Thanks for the video
Holy amazing results! Assuming Bakersfield is still as hot and dry as it was when we left in the 90's, I feel hopeful this would work in Texas too. Thanks!
I just moved into a house and gave this a test run on a small patch of my backyard. It worked really well! The yard was badly neglected so there are patches that need to be re-seeded, but the composted manure is a winner.
I have been considering doing this to amend my soil. Areas are dry and dusty, lacking organic material. I have been considering manure hoping it might open up the soil a bit. Our climate in West Texas is nearly identical to Bakersfield. We get a bit more rain, but you guys can water more often. Because of the similarities, your video has been super helpful and it has convinced me to go ahead. Unfortunately I happened to mention it to my wife already...
So you top dressed your lawn. Very nice. I've got to top dress my lawn. It's all clay. I can aerate until the cows come home and it won't do much for it. I don't fertilize with chemicals or spray for weeds. I love the distribution wheel. I'll have to look around for that one. Never saw one around here in Pa. Thanks for not using chemicals. They're killing my honeybees and other beneficial insects.
since you have clay soil look for the Next products from lawn care nut. They have a product called air 8 which will soften your clay. Not sure I spelled air 8 right but you will know it when you see the products. It will help.
Lawn looks real good. Nice job. I did notice that in the final picture there seems to be a little manure on the areas where it was dry to begin with. Might want to cheap your sprinkler head for clogged or calcium build up might not be getting enough water in that particular area. That is what happened to me. Great video. From Bakersfield, CA.
Great results, I think I'll make the spreading roller, looks easy enough and appears to do an awesome job. G'day from Aus. I'm Brent, using wife's account. Won't be pleased either .🤣🤣🤣
excellent job...did the same to a section of 1000 sq ft of my 5000 sq ft lawn to see what happens.(cow manure and compost).spread milorganite over the top(about 15 lbs of it) and raked it in with a garden rake. i should have taken pictures of before and after..this was st augustine floratam in south florida,..the difference in color was amazing..took about 3 weeks to show up but once it started it did not stop...did the rest of it..happy wife happy life.
I'm in Canada we don't have spreaders like that here have to order from states . Might bite the bullet and get one will cost me over $450 Canadian for one! Good job good results!
Bermuda grass sucks in the winter, but usually pops right back as soon as the weather warms up again. I’ve found while it’s heat tolerant, it does like water too. Having said that, I hated it. It grows sideways and I have to constantly edge it.

Pretty cool Sir! I added compost early this week also but wish I had that wheel to spread it. I ended up putting in few sticks in my lawn...my St Augustinegrass was actually pretty green already but wanted to add the compost more to improve my sandy loam soil. Thx for your vid it pushed me to do the job.
That's the exact reason why I bought that spreader. Years ago I spread manure and ended up with sticks/rocks/clumps/etc. That spreader did the trick on keeping it clean.
Perfect, i just did this to my lawn. I mixed it with top soil. I have my fongers cross. I wish I had that mesh tool instead of using the back of the rake.
Very cool video! Thanks for the post. I’m trying to fill in some brown patches of my lawn (St.Aug.) that I burned out because of over use of herbicide in spot patches. My lawn is very shallow due to our lava rock base. I hope I can use the manure to level and top dress too. Appreciated your time lapse very much!
@@rushmuzik it’s creeping back with some seed germinating. Going well, but have to be vigilant about the seed watering. All the attention means my lawn is getting better and better.. 😃
My buddy swore by it. Used the same process as you did. He would move his lawn at the lowest setting bagging to pick up weeds or die off and then would lay manure. Neighbors complaining about the files but heck after a few weeks he had the best lawn.
Great. Manure and fresh cut grass don't seem like a good mix as u'd think that might allow bacteria to get into the grass plant at the tips. Didn't seem like an issue though. Such a huge difference before and after.
This just proves what is right and more economically sound instead of buying pallets of sod no matter what type of grass you want to grow always works with manure you will have weeds but it can be controlled
Southern Hitta you should have seen the response from the neighbors in this high end neighborhood. I got a lot of funny looks, then a week later they’re all spreading shit in their lawns as well.
Kelsey Gallegos haha I bet I’m in North Georgia my uncles neighbor owns a lot of cows and it always smells bad but the grass in the summer looks amazing very green and it’s just a whole field so it’s a good view in the summer
Which spreader is that? Can it spread compost like Leafgro? I just replanted my lawn (till in some compost to about 4-6"). That spreader is something I needed years ago. It would've save me tons of time spreading compost. I knew there had to be an easy way - haha! Great job. Thanks
Crazy that you are allowed to water 3 times a week in that climate yet where I'm at in Florida they limit me to one day even in the dry season. Luckily no one checks to see if you're watering off day.
yeah they really have to watch how the water gets used. The american taxpayer paid a lot of money and a lot of wildlife was killed to pipe that water from three states over.
It seems so crazy to me to live with a limited water supply, and then spend it making the lawn pretty. In Maine we have no water usage limits. Our water comes from a well in the back yard and replenishes itself faster than we can use it, just have to avoid dumping chemicals on the lawn.
Wow that's beautiful hey. Am stunned at how much everything changed in 7 days. You really did an amazing job hey. Am starting mine as well and am thinking chicken manure. Any advice on how I should do that will be highly appreciated. Thanx
That’s interesting. I just shoveled out my chicken coop and have 2 wheel barrel loads of chicken manure. I’ve never tried chicken manure but from what I read it’s good shit (pun intended)! You’ll have to let me know how it does for you. Best of luck and thanks for the nice comment!
The spreader leveled it pretty good, so there was no need to drag it. If I would have spread it via shovel I probably would have dragged it, or at least raked it at a minimum.
Proper use of manure in the garden can supply your plants with nutrients and help improve soil structure. Adding too much manure can lead to nitrate leaching, nutrient runoff, excessive vegetative growth and, for some manures, salt damage
Great idea. But I'm curious do you mulch your grass clippings into your lawn that can replenish up to 25% of what is lost during growing maybe that will help your lawn. Mulching the grass clippings and also helps keep the ground moist.
Had to laugh at the wife comment. I'M the one that sprays for mosquitos and fleas, and treats the yard for fire ants. Now I will be treating the yard! Hubby never questions anything I do. He just thanks me for all the work I do. But man, how nice your yard turned out! Hope I will be as successful as you were! Thanks for posting this video. 👍🏻
Fredmullegun You're absolutely right! I've used rabbit manure, corn gluten, spoiled milk on my lawn and took it from looking like a sand dunes to a great lawn. I wish I only had Bermuda instead of that St Augustine tho. It can't tolerate the TX heat like Bermuda. The $$$ saving is superior to chemical treatment.
Kelsey great job! I now want to fix my lawn. It looks like yours prior to adding the manure. How often should this be done to the lawn, monthly, quarterly, yearly? Can a Mesh drum roller be rented to spread the manure? Thank you for your help. Hope you see my comment.
I apply it once a year. Too much manure can burn the lawn. You might be able to rent a roller at a garden center, but if you can’t find one you can always spread it with a rake and shovel. Best of luck!
After the finer compost is out of the spreader add the larger particles to your compost (or start one). start making your own with your clippings yard waste and kitchen scrapes and put it on your garden and just as important the lawn. Surprised how much you can supplement compost. Maybe from a full yard of soil to 1/2 yard implementing compost. Then year to year you need less and the compost you create will cover your needs. Throw it in a green bin and buy it back or keep it and use it. Also compost tea in an ortho spreader after you spread compost is ideal.
Great Video and informative in an old fashioned simple way.... Without any obnoxious music or drumbeats, etc! Love it, thanks!!
Thank you

Blackkow is great but too expensive to spread it on my 10k lawn.
yes sir use black kow every year in the spring with some seed it works miracles but thankfully I don't have as big of a front yard as this video.
Hi Kenny! I’ll try this....
If you also wanted to Level your lawn, would cow manure work or would you suggest to mix it with topsoil or sand? I also plan to overseed .
What type seed do you use?

Did you find that you had to eat more food to produce all that manure to cover your whole lawn, or was the regular diet enough? Thanks.

Eat more fiber. Bulky!
A speader is not needed if you eat plenty of ex-lax.

Good stuff tho lawn looks beautiful!

Bermuda grass sucks in the winter, but usually pops right back as soon as the weather warms up again. I’ve found while it’s heat tolerant, it does like water too.
Having said that, I hated it. It grows sideways and I have to constantly edge it.
Agreed - but when it's in good shape it sure is a good looking lawn. Just high maintenance.

Great vid. Any reason you didn’t overseed those patch areas at the same time or the whole garden in general?
So after you spread the compost did you drag it with anything to level it?
The spreader leveled it pretty good, so there was no need to drag it. If I would have spread it via shovel I probably would have dragged it, or at least raked it at a minimum.
This was great. What type of Manure? Chickens, horses, cows?
I Did This As Well But With K-31 Fescue In Southern California.(San Bernardino) Excellent Results And Inexpensive!

I would add another layer
Proper use of manure in the garden can supply your plants with nutrients and help improve soil structure. Adding too much manure can lead to nitrate leaching, nutrient runoff, excessive vegetative growth and, for some manures, salt damage
Maybe a week or two later. You want to add just enough so you are not smothering the existing grass blades.
Great idea. But I'm curious do you mulch your grass clippings into your lawn that can replenish up to 25% of what is lost during growing maybe that will help your lawn. Mulching the grass clippings and also helps keep the ground moist.

Nice work looks great
I found out the compost I just bought contains sewage sludge. I can't help but think this is not good to use?
Kelsey great job! I now want to fix my lawn. It looks like yours prior to adding the manure. How often should this be done to the lawn, monthly, quarterly, yearly? Can a Mesh drum roller be rented to spread the manure? Thank you for your help. Hope you see my comment.
I apply it once a year. Too much manure can burn the lawn. You might be able to rent a roller at a garden center, but if you can’t find one you can always spread it with a rake and shovel. Best of luck!
Dominated!
Good job!
That’s awesome bro! Thanks for the tip. Looks amazing

Looks like crap! Oh wait...it is crap 💩😂. Great job on the lawn. That green color doesn’t lie. That’s a happy and healthy lawn!
He sure works fast
Wow!!! That looks great.
Looks great bro
Thanks
Wow
Looks great!!
I'll have to give this a try next year.
Very nice. I’ll need to look for one of those spreaders. Curious,...did you consider core aerating before composting?
It was on my "to-do" list, but never got around to it.
Plus, a big plus! No poisons or other dangerous chemicals!!
Nice work its looking great. All the Calvin.
How much compost and how much square footage of lawn?
Awesome man, great job!!!
Amazing results! How many sq ft is that front yard and how much did it cost you in manure? I have a corner lot and I'll need to cover about 2000sq ft.
approx 1800 ft^2 and $40 in manure.
How much did you spread here?
Great job! Thanks for sharing! This is very helpful.
Sheesh only 7 days?? That’s crazy. I put mine down over 8 days ago now and have been consistently watering it and it looks the exact same
It depends how starved it is for nitrogen
