I just wanted to say thank you so much not only for this fantastic video, but your replies in these comments. Building the leveler and getting my lawn right has helped me immensely during this quarantine. Thank again!
Watching you mix that sand and dirt. I had to use 45 yards of compost/sand/soil mixture to level my yard. I was lucky the supplier could mix that up at their yard before delivery. I paid some guys a “day” rate for their services. Took a few days but they got it all out there and pretty level. I mainly did mine to provide better nutrient base for my zoysia grass. Lawn topping is under rated for a great looking yard.
Just got done watching all 4 segments. Very well done! Just finishing up stage 1, sunjoe also. Stage 2 of your video helped me decide on my lawn leveling strategy! I'm also switching to KBG. Going for the lower cut lawn look now. Plus, KBG has great repair qualities that TTTF doesn't!! Tenacity is something I use as a post/pre emergent anyway. A very good product. Again, great job and good tips!
I would be worried that I would suffocate the seeds top dressing over w soil. I will be leveling then applying seed. Making good soil contact with you great idea of the board.
4.12 I think the technical name for the mini-drag is a "Lute" go down your local hire centre and ask for the weekend rate on a Lute for your lawn and watch bewilderment. I asked for a "Tariff" once and the guy said "What does it do?" I responded with "It tells you fee for each tool hire per day etc."
A push broom would have been great for getting the soil & sand into the bottom layers of the lawn and exposing more grass blades. Nice work though. A nice lawn is definitely a labor of love. I recently seeded a Zenith Zoysia lawn and used a drag mat to level my lawn before seeding, but I still have some top dressing to do next year in a few spots.

My backyard suffered after a long winter and dog's pees. There are multiple patches that need to be restored. I was watching many videos and saw just a few times where sand with compost was used which surprised me a lot. Why sand with compost and not normal soil?
IMO you don’t need sand/compost for fixing bare spots. If you’re going to seed those small bare spots a light layer of normal soil is good enough or you can use peat moss to lightly cover the seeds to keep them from drying out. Remember, key to quick and successful germination is proper watering, do not let the seeds dry out.
@@ShortCutLawn Oh in my case in backyard I have big spots of dead grass, multiple little areas with no grass or rare grass. In front yard it will require leveling as there are many bumps in the ground and when I cut the grass with lawn mower the surface is not flat. So... in few words is not just over-seeding. As you said peat moss is needed when you want to overseed the lawn to avoid seeing ground through the grass. In my case it looks like the backyard is missing lot of grass and (I hope I understand correctly) sand with compost should do the job. I almost ordered soil only, but then I saw few videos with difference between soil on top of grass and sand+compost on top of grass. Just the soil will make another layer that will prevent the grass that's already in the ground from breathing while sand+compost will let it breathe and on the same time will help new seeds to germinate. Please, let me know if I understand the idea correctly.
If I've never top dressed and leveled my (bumpy and patchy) yard before does it make more sense to do the overseeding as the last step after top dressing rather than first like you did? Just walking over my yard barefoot I can't imagine I would be able to keep the layer of top dress under .5 inch like you advised and still fill in the low areas.
With your situation you have the right idea, go ahead and level it and overseed afterwards it’s perfectly fine. Just make sure you have good seed-to-soil contact, seeds needs to covered and moist for it to germinate.
Hey Ryan,.. yeah you may wanna check out this Bluebank from seedsuperstore, it’s 4 stars across the board with the exception of shade tolerance. It’s considered “Super Elite” so I don’t think we can go wrong with that 🙂⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Correction: Bluebank is actually 4stars in shade tolerance but 1 on spring green up and 3 in leaf texture. I got mixed up with Regenerate Tall Fescue which I might use on our small front lawn.
Looks good, here's where i go different. Instead of shoveling dirt onto the lawn try throwing it at a good angle, it spreads itself evenly believe it or not.. Might sound like a lot of work but its actually quicker and you get near perfect coverage. You avoid raking afterward which you dont want to do if you just spread an even amount of grass seed. With the hand throwing method just stand with the wheel barrel beside you and dont move till your done the whole area 360 degrees around you, then move the wheel barrel ahead 10 or 15 feet and do it again. finish, turn on sprinklers and your done. You dont want to rake afterwards cause you just move way to much seed around and you dont have to use you drag behind thing cause ...well...its spread perfect. Master the throw and you'll change your ways i promise. Ill make a video one day. Nice lawn btw
You sound passionate and knows what you’re doing, but i have a feeling you didn’t quite get what i was doing. The drags main purpose was to level and spread the material. KBG seeds are so tiny that it’s almost microscopic 🙂 so when you put it down on a turf it goes straight down and gets locked in between the grass plant. I’m in need of lawn rejuvenating. Great vid. My question for you is why did you not mix the seed with your compost/sand mixture? And I saw briefly you thatched the lawn. What other prep or fertilizing did you do if any? Thanks for sharing!
Control and consistency. If you spread the seeds separately you get to put it where you want it, in my case I spread it evenly on the entire lawn. If you mix the seeds with your top dressing you most likely to end up with clumps. In my opinion Mixing only works well when you’re fixing small patches. On this project I didn’t add or use any additional fertilization, just water. - Thanks for checking out my video 👍🏼
So if you have to level your lawn out with depths greater than .5inches... is it best to seed after you lay the top dressing?? Or should I seed, top dressing, seed again? Good stuff though, subbed for sure
Thanks for the sub Mike, yes if you’re gonna go more than .5” of material then seeding after is best, just make sure you rake it in afterwards, good seed to soil contact is very important. I guess if you have extra seeds then you can do both, just don’t put too much down to avoid over crowding. Good luck Mike 👍🏼
I probably need 10 dump truck loads to level my yard lol. I noticed some spots keep dipping I wonder if it is the septic lines causing that. I am afraid to add too much dirt on top of them.
Well in my situation, i mowed 17 days after seeding. Seedlings are about .5 to .75 inch at this point. With a low cut lawn I had to mow as soon as possible ( I can’t let the existing grass to grow too tall). But if you mow tall then you can delay your first mow which is better for those baby grass. I don’t think you have to wait 30 days.

I like seeing the drag in action I was wondering if something like that would work but I wasn't sure
ShortCut Lawn thanks for the answer, was also wondering why.
your lawn was already pretty much leveled.
What is the ratio of compost to sand? 1 to 1?
Great video .... just made my own lawn level from your design. Cheers.
Are you gonna upload a video using it? 😁
What all did you use to build your leveler
Awesome someone with as much maybe more energy then me 👍🏻.and also a perfectionist. I wish I had that flat bed to bring the compost mixture 🤔😆
Alright 😁👍🏼
So if you have to level your lawn out with depths greater than .5inches... is it best to seed after you lay the top dressing?? Or should I seed, top dressing, seed again? Good stuff though, subbed for sure
Thanks for the sub Mike, yes if you’re gonna go more than .5” of material then seeding after is best, just make sure you rake it in afterwards, good seed to soil contact is very important. I guess if you have extra seeds then you can do both, just don’t put too much down to avoid over crowding. Good luck Mike 👍🏼
What is the correct season in California for this job.
Spring or early autumn.
I probably need 10 dump truck loads to level my yard lol. I noticed some spots keep dipping I wonder if it is the septic lines causing that. I am afraid to add too much dirt on top of them.
Compost tea is the best fertilizer
I actually want to try that in the future.
@@ShortCutLawn I’ve been doing it for a few years it’s the best thing you can do for any kind of plant
@@ShortCutLawn how do you like the short bed truck?
Clever Tools applied
Thanks man. Good shut.
Which spray nozzle you used?
Hi what setting do you have your wizz set at for seeding?
3 1/2
That’s what we call in Georgia top dressing right
How often after topdressing will you mow your lawn in next 30days? Always have a problem with that..
ShortCut Lawn Thanks a lot!!
