My daughter and I started Dr. McDougall's starch solution diet in May. She has tried just about every diet without success. Since then she has lost 30 pounds and I have lost 16 pounds. This is a very easy diet to maintain for both of us. She is 24 years old and easy for her without any cravings! I have my cholesterol checked through work every year and it had been slowly increasing with the A1C slowly creeping up too. Well after being on this diet all my numbers were down so far, the doctor told me that my numbers were light a teenager!! What? I couldn't believe how fast that happened. I am so pleased. We feel more energy and happier on this lifestyle, not to mention it is so easy! I realize nobody really wants to hear about changing their diet. My husband has had 6 stents placed in the past 2 years and now needs open heart because of scar tissue over the stents. He is a diabetic. The surgery will happen in the next month. I can't get him on board with committing to this lifestyle and therefore our 15 and 21 year olds follows his lead. It is so sad because this is truly easy to do and yet they don't want to give up the "good" things they say. My daughter and I will continue to live this way and try to set the best example possible and praying something resonates with them. Anyway thank you Dr. McDougall and Gustavo for the work and reaching the people like us :)

Completely awesome Dr. McDougall and Gustavo! Thank you for this very valuable information. This is my 14th day McDougalling and already my body has many changes. Arthristis pain has diminished. I have a history of TKR's both knees. Stents heart since 2002. Have not been on any meds what so ever. Cardiologist said all the heart meds raise my liver enzymes and I said good didn't want to take them anyways. So med free my whole life. Feeling great lots of energy. No heart burn, and looking forward to clean eating and clean arteries. Blood pressure has been low most of my life like 120/ 75 now 105/60. Sometimes it would go up to 140/80 but that was in the Drs. office. I told them I had the white coat sydrome. lol.

The one thing I know, and I believe this is all true, is when I tried low-carb, and or Paleo, I felt like crap. No energy. Didn't feel like working out. Fact is sugar/carbs is energy. Required for exercise and feeling good. Therefore, based on my experience this is all true.

I can't personally prove I can lose weight on this yet, just started, but I know that I exercise a lot and low-carb style diets are AWFUL for that. Those aren't the answer.
I also get real sick of Paleo real fast. Far less options on a diet like that. My own personal experience.

I tried LCHF for 5 years and never had success either. When I start rethinking the whole macronutrient differences in terms of their boiling point, everything makes sense to me now that sugar in all forms is used by the body. Reading Arnold Ehret's works helped too.

Seeing patients only get sicker and how frustrated their doctors were was why I changed my mind about med school and becoming a physician. I did not want to study and work so hard all those years to watch the people I was SUPPOSED to have the knowledge to help get sicker & sicker! I wanted to help people get healthy again!! I thought that's what I would learn in med school, but watching some of the "top" docs in the clinic, I learned med school would not teach me how to make people well again. Fortunately my questions on why these people never got better kept nagging at me, I did my own research and am convinced that most chronic diseases and illnesses can be prevented and reversed with a low fat, whole food plant based diet.

    • @pastryshack551
      @pastryshack551 ปีที่แล้ว

@@panes840 I am a diabetic I have listen to dr McDougall over the years. I am no at not on medication, but as a type 2 if I eat a sweet potatoe scaling 3 Oz, my sugar will go very high. I would love to eat starches, but I can't. I disagree with him saying sugar does not cause cancer. I am not obese, so I don't know if his client are obese an this is the reason these people can eat starch, but I can't. Just looked his snark remark about dr lustig having a tummy because he is against sugar.
He is very arrogant, his way or the highway. I see many drs who ignore, never saying a word against him. Let him have his way. He threw me on another podcast, whe he said dr Gerson, the German drs work is the same as his, when he would be the one who copy dr gerson,s work who if he were alive would be close to 100, because his sister Charlotte is in her late 90,s

    • @panes840
      @panes840 ปีที่แล้ว

@Pastry Shack I hear you in some of what you say. I find him incredibly arrogant. However, the reason for your starches issue would be insulin resistance and/or fatty liver! I would check that out.
Sugar doesn't cause cancer. He is correct! What it does do is provide FUEL. This is because the molecules biochemically act differently when processed without fibre.
If you have a compromised fatty liver, which generally goes hand in hand with diabetes, then yes, when eating starches will go silly, but that's due to the fatty liver. Fatty liver affects you beta cells in your pancreas and reduces insulin sensitivity. I know this because I have studied nutrition. Refined sugars are also problematic for everyone and their livers.
With weight loss, those sugar spikes will come down!!!!
Want more reassurance by a diabetic who teaches this with starch for type 1 and 2? Go to Managing Diabetes channel with Cyrus and Danny. You can also cross reference that with highly qualified nutritionist Simon Hill on TH-cam
Both channels provide the truth with unbiased scientific evidence and data.
Honestly, my mother was the same. She was 71 and got rid of diabetes in under 4 months, but I helped reverse her type 2 with filling her up with starches from beans, steamed and cooled reheated potatoes (best way as you increase resistant starch which is highly protective against some cancers) and fill yourself up with lots of vegetables either baked, steamed, stir fry but NO OIL. Omega 6 oils are fine and can help reduce the number 1 killer heart disease, but the calorie density of oil is very, very high. Jeff Novick does a brilliant video on that.
So get rid of foods high in saturated fat. Like dairy and animal products. A little saturated fat is normal. In fact, saturated fat is in an apple (technically), but consuming foods high in saturated fat and cholesterol is not your friend. Our bodies make enough cholesterol all on its own.
Again, I want proof? Check out my suggestions.
You can seriously change this and quickly, too. Good luck. 👍🏼

A big clue is waistlines. The diet of people with obese waistlines is incorrect. Whatever diet works to limit the calories in the long run, and something that people we know have eaten in the past is a good indicator on what we should eat. But the studies also clearly show there were no problems in Japan before the western diet infiltrated.
Veganism reduces waistlines dramatically and gets people into the correct BMI range and waist line range. I feel satiated doing it. I just started and yet to have to sustain it in the long term. It takes time to cook vegan foods. It is very easy to buy simple foods like a pizza and throw in the oven. However, I have too much to lose. I will dedicate time each week to food preparation.

      @@WalrusRiderEntertainment from Ray Peat
Many people lately have been told, as part of a campaign to explain the high incidence of fatty liver degeneration in the US, supposedly resulting from eating too much sugar, that fructose can be metabolized only by the liver. The liver does have the highest capacity for metabolizing fructose, but the other organs do metabolize it.
If fructose can by-pass the fatty acids' inhibition of glucose metabolism, to be oxidized when glucose can't, and if the metabolism of diabetes involves the oxidation of fatty acids instead of glucose, then we would expect there to be less than the normal amount of fructose in the serum of diabetics, although their defining trait is the presence of an increased amount of glucose. According to Osuagwu and Madumere (2008), that is the case. If a fructose deficiency exists in diabetes, then it is appropriate to supplement it in the diet.

Dr McDougall has a lot of great things to say but he really is confused on sugar (sucrose). On one hand he says how great sugar is and that it doesn't cause disease then on the other hand he says sugary foods shouldn't be available in school even though children need a large supply of simple sugars. He also hates on fruit a lot and avoids including it in his recommendations. He avoided answering the question about fruit in this video (well where i got up to ). Even though he admits he needs to add simple sugar to his bland complex sugar starch meals in order for people to want to eat them. Basically this is trying to recreate fruit as that's what peoples frugivore cells are truly craving. Also saying refined sugar will "rot" your teeth but refined sugar is also great and recommends you add it to food. It makes no sense that the bodies number one fuel source - glucose and fructose will "rot" teeth. Simple sugars are neutral on the PH scale and do not introduce acid into the mouth that can dissolve teeth. I know about the carb-eating bacteria but people aren't just eating straight sugar, always other substances involved. Teeth health is a complex beast with many many other factors other than diet coming into play. Obviously whole fruits are the healthiest but I'm saddened Dr M is still spreading old wives tales about sugar. He also incorrectly calls starch-based foods "sugars" which easily confuses people. They are not "sugars" until the body has broken down their bonds.

I appreciate what John McDougall said about Robert Lustig having a belly, but then McDougall looks quite thin. McDougall said that fat, oils, with sugar can get stored in fat cells because of the insulin for the sugars, carbs. So what would happen if you had fats without sugars, carbs, would the fat just get used as energy and not stored?

These people do not sit around watching TV an I prove it for myself. I love spaghetti when I have it I just go for a strong walk. I have proven everything for myself.

Research is difficult because feeding humans a diet that *might* kill them cannot get funding. So food manufacturers fund research that they can use to increase sales of their products. All we can do is look at the evidence around us. Sugar has increased so it's in every processed food and western countries have 2 or 3 fat people in 3.

I always read dietary fat is converted to triglycerides before it's stored, how can it be stored in its original form? 'After ingestion, lipids (dietary fats) are broken down into glycerol and smaller chain fatty acids by lipase, a pancreatic enzyme. This process is known as lipolysis. Next, these compounds are converted to triglycerides, which travel to your muscles, liver and fat tissues where they're once again broken down into glycerol and fatty acids. Some are used for energy and other biochemical processes. The excess is stored as fat in adipose tissues.'

    • @panes840

You have to look at the metabolic pathways for different types of fat. Notwithstanding, those metabolic pathways will react differently if you are eating carbs and protein and the % of all x3 of macronutrients in the diet. On top of that how fat is metabolised will be different for someone who has a fast or slow metabolic rate. Its not straight forward

Can someone please clarify and talk about refined white commercial sugar , cause back a few years ago when I started learning about processed white sugar like S & H I was taught that it was toxic and would dirty up my blood and contribute to toxemia , which is , I came to learn, a key factor in premature ageing . So over the years I have struggled with a white sugar addiction the commercial kind of course , and when I was using this type of sugar I would periodically get a cold with out fail, starting with morning sniffles that would eventually turn into a full blown cold or flue . So then I came to realize all I had to do was stop eating the commercial crappy junk processed food like pepsi coke donuts snickers etc. and I would get well real quick , worked like a charm every time ! now a days Iv'e been vegan for the past three years most all of my health issues have cleared up and I'm looking forward to healthier days to come ! I'm the outdoors kind of guy very active , also a musician, so I exercise and work out to maintain high energy , at 73 I'm doing pretty good all things considered ! I'm off topic , so one last thing , is dr McDougall saying that white sugar is ok ? Is He agreeing with Durianrider that it's ok or healthy to put white sugar in your smoothie and breakfast cereals , and to carb up with commercial sodas like sprite ? I think that's terrible advice for any one who is striving to be healthy on a vegan life style ! white commercial sugar in all it's disguises is like a drug , I'm sticking to whole plant sugars like starches and fruits ! I'm just saying clarify what kind of sugar you're talking about ! I personally follow Dr McDougalls advice , but I'm not sure as to what it is he's talking about when it comes to the word sugar.

I love Mr Mc Douglas but I am a diabetic, I am not fat, 110 lbs, but I find when I use his diet my knee begins to hurt like an arthritic. I am convinced that his diet is the cause of arthritis. It's difficult to convince people that sugar is the cause of these ailments.
If I put a sweet potatoe weighing 3 0z along with vegetables, my sugar goes up to 10. I know he has good intentions but starchavores can not be diabetic and eat this way. I take no medication at all other than a B12 so I don't know why my sugar goes up so high. There are many of his patients who are on medication this might work, but for me it does not. Even the banana bread in the book starch solution would kill me. So I don't know if this is because these people are taking medication. E en 100 grams of chickpeas with Vegetables sends my sugar high

The fat you eat is blocking your insulin receptor sites thus the body has to produce more insulin to get the sugar into the cells.
When you eat around 20g of fat MAX per day then your body needs very little insulin to do its job hence you SHRINK and get HEALTHIER :)

Focus your diet on low gi starches like brown rice, sprouted bread, squash, beans, legumes, stone ground wheat or very high fiber whole wheat bread (carb ratio to fiber ratio should be 5 or less, so if it has 25 grams of carbs and 5 grams of fiber the ratio is 5, aim for 5 or less on processed breads) oatmeal, corn, yam with the skin, sweet potato with the skin, all non starchy veggies and don't be afraid of fruits, especially berries, blueberries raspberries every kind of berry. Focus your diet mainly on those high fiber starches, for example, oatmeal with berries and cinnamon with unsweetened soy milk for breakfast, brown rice with beans and no sugar tomato sauce or tomato paste or just herbs and spices for lunch, squash, sweet potato, corn, brown rice, black bean, spinach, avocado bowl for dinner or many many other variations on that. You could buy a frozen pack of stir fry veggies from ALDIs, but don't fry it in oil and don't use the sugary sauce packet, just add it in with some soy sauce and brown rice if you want an asian dish, or many many many other variations and recipes.

Just remember, its not sugar that causes diabetes, thats a misconception. Look up dr. Neal Barnard, he's treated hundreds of diabetics with diet alone and virtually cured them. Its because diabetes isn't caused by sugar alone, its far more complicated with that.
