So much stress was built up in my mind that I found it difficult to function in the day-to-day routines. It saved me from several visits to a psychotherapist.
I have sung this masterpiece with my former choir Bergen Oratoriekor. There are segments in this work (particularly "Eia Mater Fons Amoris") that was impossible to get through, or sit and listen to, without someone among the sopranos or altos suddenly braking down in tears. It is all about the heartbreak of Mary as she watches her son suffer and die on the cross. The lamentation is audible throughout this profound musical work. Any mother would feel the endless despair and pain. It is deeply moving and profound. So heartwrenchingly mournful. And yet so unbelievably beautiful at the same time. Antonín Dvořák is genuinely one of mye favorite composers.

Well, I fact it is known that Jesús had at least one brother. Maria was "the virgin" but that has to be understood in a different context. Or let us say, every woman is a virgin AFTER having the first child. A different conception of virginity but it makes sense.

There is something we are incalculable . There is something that impresses people so much and gives people a falling tear and solace . What going to make us do that ?
Translation (Edward Caswall, 1849, Lyrca Catholica) At the Cross her station keeping, stood the mournful Mother weeping, close to her Son to the last. Through her heart, His sorrow sharing, all His bitter anguish bearing, now at length the sword has passed. O how sad and sore distressed was that Mother, highly blest, of the sole-begotten One. Christ above in torment hangs, she beneath beholds the pangs of her dying glorious Son. Is there one who would not weep, whelmed in miseries so deep, Christ's dear Mother to behold? Can the human heart refrain from partaking in her pain, in that Mother's pain untold? For the sins of His own nation, She saw Jesus wracked with torment, All with scourges rent: She beheld her tender Child, Saw Him hang in desolation, Till His spirit forth He sent. O thou Mother! fount of love! Touch my spirit from above, make my heart with thine accord: Make me feel as thou hast felt; make my soul to glow and melt with the love of Christ my Lord. Holy Mother! pierce me through, in my heart each wound renew of my Savior crucified: Let me share with thee His pain, who for all my sins was slain, who for me in torments died. Let me mingle tears with thee, mourning Him who mourned for me, all the days that I may live: By the Cross with thee to stay, there with thee to weep and pray, is all I ask of thee to give. Virgin of all virgins blest!, Listen to my fond request: let me share thy grief divine; Let me, to my latest breath, in my body bear the death of that dying Son of thine. Wounded with His every wound, steep my soul till it hath swooned, in His very Blood away; Be to me, O Virgin, nigh, lest in flames I burn and die, in His awful Judgment Day. Christ, when Thou shalt call me hence, be Thy Mother my defense, be Thy Cross my victory; While my body here decays, may my soul Thy goodness praise, Safe in Paradise with Thee.

So beautiful. We sang this with ACS
I love the commercial break 20 seconds before the final chord
Thank you SO much for uploading this! This piece is very important to me ... in my life .., and I love it!
Thank you!
Visemanden / Ole Irenæus Wierød
I had a possibility to hear about him as an ordinary man from a lady whose ancestors were his friends. One of the greatest world composers loved potato soup with baatsch /local speciality and beer....Beeing atheist hearing his music I have to think of God or the origin of wonders of this world
Eva Zatloukalova я тоже не верю в Христа как Бога, скорее правы те, кто говорит что Понтий Пилат распял вместо него кого-то другого!
what does it matter ?
There is so much coughing in the background, I bet there's a blunt
rotation being shared with the audience members.
I just love the voices together amazing high and low very addictive XXX
it's a very good interpretation!!!!! a pity there is no video of the musicians performing and Harnoncourt, conducting.

The context of this piece is absolutely heartbreaking. All three of his children had died within a short period of time.
Well, I fact it is known that Jesús had at least one brother. Maria was "the virgin" but that has to be understood in a different context. Or let us say, every woman is a virgin AFTER having the first child. A different conception of virginity but it makes sense.
??????????????????????????????????????????????????
ValerioDenise Salvador i agree
Dvorak had nine children altogether. Only first three of them died very quickly.
danielsondanielson ** I made a mistake, I had read that his wife had died but only his 3 children did.
THIS IS SO BEATUTIFUL I ALMOST CRY

Translation (Edward Caswall, 1849, Lyrca Catholica)
At the Cross her station keeping,
stood the mournful Mother weeping,
close to her Son to the last.
Through her heart, His sorrow sharing,
all His bitter anguish bearing,
now at length the sword has passed.
O how sad and sore distressed
was that Mother, highly blest,
of the sole-begotten One.
Christ above in torment hangs,
she beneath beholds the pangs
of her dying glorious Son.
Is there one who would not weep,
whelmed in miseries so deep,
Christ's dear Mother to behold?
Can the human heart refrain
from partaking in her pain,
in that Mother's pain untold?
For the sins of His own nation,
She saw Jesus wracked with torment,
All with scourges rent:
She beheld her tender Child,
Saw Him hang in desolation,
Till His spirit forth He sent.
O thou Mother! fount of love!
Touch my spirit from above,
make my heart with thine accord:
Make me feel as thou hast felt;
make my soul to glow and melt
with the love of Christ my Lord.
Holy Mother! pierce me through,
in my heart each wound renew
of my Savior crucified:
Let me share with thee His pain,
who for all my sins was slain,
who for me in torments died.
Let me mingle tears with thee,
mourning Him who mourned for me,
all the days that I may live:
By the Cross with thee to stay,
there with thee to weep and pray,
is all I ask of thee to give.
Virgin of all virgins blest!,
Listen to my fond request:
let me share thy grief divine;
Let me, to my latest breath,
in my body bear the death
of that dying Son of thine.
Wounded with His every wound,
steep my soul till it hath swooned,
in His very Blood away;
Be to me, O Virgin, nigh,
lest in flames I burn and die,
in His awful Judgment Day.
Christ, when Thou shalt call me hence,
be Thy Mother my defense,
be Thy Cross my victory;
While my body here decays,
may my soul Thy goodness praise,
Safe in Paradise with Thee.
Thank you.
Amazing and moving. thank you for posting this.
Diese Musik berührt, einfach grandios und wunderbar.
Harnoncourt is a wonderful musician! Thank's! Ursula Bagdasarjanz
getting goosebumps all over!
Superbe !
Qui était Dvorak, qui était cet homme qui savait écrire une telle musique ?
Geneviève Bauer Czech composer - most famous for his New World Symphony and his Cello concerto. The symphony has the tune to "Going home' used for many melancholy times like funerals
+Robert Woodley The man who wrote the lyrics actually wrote them after hearing Dvorak's New World Movement 2.
+Geneviève Bauer Un homme extraordinaire, admiré de Brahms entre autre !
Que obra mais linda.
BELLISIMA MUSICA
The vocals and the trombone really bring out the straighter parts. There is nothing more epic then a ghostly operatic chorus. #BlockBuster #MegaMillionDollarMovies #VintageBrands #MassMedia #SocialMedia
