    This will probably get buried in the comments but here it is anyways.
    Input sensors like the cam and crank are very sensitive to interference. The two biggest causes of interference on a motor are the alternator and ignition systems. Make sure the cam/crank wiring is routed away from the ignition coils, alternator, and associated wiring. And make sure the cam and crank sensor are mounted as far away from the coils and alternator as possible.
    You mentioned that some tin foil helped. Instead of tin foil which can ground out on contact throughout the engine bay, use a different type of shielding for the harness that is insulated. Make sure it is only grounded at one end, ideally at the main ECU ground to prevent “ground looping”.

    Hey Matt...quick note...when driving in Alaska, and the same symptoms occur on our truck as well as the Bobbi, we put a product called "Heet" in the tank to dry out the fuel. Something about water in the fuel that gets in from condensation, messes up the sensors and eventually stall the vehicle.

      Traveling between drastic temperatures is an actual issue. If your unit is spending time above zero (because Celcius), and you see below freezing in your future, gas line antifreeze is your friend. Sounds like drag-strip fuel, but dumping alcohol into the tank is just basic. Alcohol attracts water, and remains flammable. Moisture in the fuel system crystallizes and blocks the filters.

      If your gas is 10% ethanol, any of the Heet alcohol gas line antifreeze products are a complete waste of money.

      If your fuel has ethanol in it, like most fuels do, moisture in your fuel is NOT the problem. Ethanol does the same thing as "Heet", aka methyl hydrate, aka "gas-line antifreeze". It bonds to any water in your fuel and prevents it from freezing. Because pretty much all gasoline has ethanol in it, fuel icing is no longer a modern problem.

      these guys are very much of the "it works well enough, we will just struggle through", probably comes from their days in demo derby.
      the different jobs may not be as long apart from eachother as the videos are because of editing and releasing on a schedule for the algorithem.

      @ecot29 We don't know the exact timeline that they are doing these recoveries, these past few Bombi videos all could have happened within a couple days of each other. If they couldn't figure out the issue with the small amount of time they had between recoveries but they needed the Bombi for a "deep snow" recovery, like the customer said it was, then they have to work with what they got.

    Ditch the drive train. Hydrostatic is the only way to go. Also be well worth adding a we blade to it as a winching anchor or for generally shifting snow.
    Honestly a hydro system will make you life so much easier and more controlled. No just set the engine revs and massive torque and mm perfect control. What you have there is a lovely machine with a disaster or a transmission.
    I worked for the UK government in Antarctic tractor train traverse and we used big plastic sheets as sledges. Look up how people move fuel in Antarctica. Messing about dragging and often breaking vehicles in deep snow is just folly. Burry the plastic, drag the vehicle on, then strap it down, drive off pulling the sled. If you need to go work hill just drag and anchor behind you. It’s safer and way nicer to your machines. The tools needed are also light weight and portable. You could modify it for your needs no bother.

      We use similar sleds for heavy hauling behind snowmobiles here in Alaska, and I've see really nice ones out of Canada. Much smaller versions of course!

    A hydrostatic turning dual-differential setup would be the way to go.
    The tracks would be locked with no steering input and you'd have complete control of both track speeds for turning without fighting the brakes.
    Its what military tanks have been using for coming up on a century.
    Most efficient AND controlled way to use tracks

      The bombi exists the way it does because it's cheap and when done right is very effective for small light vehicles. Hydrostatic drives are 4 or 5 times more expensive.
      The fact the brake caliper snapped off means there has been no true engineering done to calculate anything on this vehicle. Not great when it is the rescue vehicle.

      @@benfulton1265yeah they used an off the shelf kit that would generally be used for cars without much additional reinforcement. Would have fractured it with all the driving they were doing previously where it wasn't turning due to the tracks not being set up right... Wonder what the lateral traction bars were for and if it will just slide off the road now... 😏

    Hope you guys see this. By no means is this criticism, you guys are great, nothing but respect. Just some advice for the term x system on the bombi.
    1. The term x can also be run in batch fire (no cam needed). You will need to modify ignition parameters to do so. I recommend you upload a version of your current tune to the 3.5" handheld with a (no cam sensor) designation. Usually you'll need a little more idle fuel, but closed loop will take care of the difference.
    2. I don't know if you guys figured out why it wouldn't go into closed loop the other day, but many times it is either EMI interfering with the TPS RoC or MAP RoC acceleration enrichment triggering your "pumpshot" which puts the ecu in open loop. The enrichment values and VE table can also be so far off that when it triggers the accel enrichment, it temporarily runs better (it needed fuel and got it) or worse (it was running fine, got too much fuel). Either of those situations can cause a change to vaccuum fast enough that it exceeds MAP RoC blanking and gets you in a never ending loop.
    3. The term x systems are not as reliable as a stock ECU, I would keep a spare on hand with a get home tune preloaded. They have a higher than normal failure rate for stuff like injector drivers and o2 sensor drivers. If you lose an injector, you'll still get home, but if the o2 driver fails and you have tightened down the learn and closed loop tables yet, you'll be in trouble when it happens. You'll have to clear the learn tables and disable o2 feedback. I find it is simpler to just preload a tune that has the o2 sensor feedback disabled once you have your ve table within +/- 5% accuracy when warm. To be safe, I would add 10% fuel to the entire VE table.
    Can't wait to see what's up with the axle on the bombi and what you're going to do next

    The Bombi has a control authority problem. Tracked vehicles have a ratio of track width to wheelbase which allows them to steer correctly... If you end up with a ratio much over about 1.5 or so you'll end up not being able to steer effectively. The reason is that you develop steering torque based on your vehicle track width, and you develop track stability based on your ground contact length (wheelbase, effectively).
    It needs to either be wider or shorter :)

      Oh, and if you want a good drive option, have a think about electric drive... You can get a 100kW electric motor for about $7k... One of those per side would make the Bombi pretty hilarious... One CAN throttle per track and it'll stick steer faster and slower :) Chuck a generator in there instead of an engine and have some fun :)

    To avoid fuel lines freezing: keep a full tank, especially when the rig will be sitting idle during wet/cold weather. This avoids condensation in the tank. Also, the appropriate ratio of HEET to gas will help. In leaded gas days, it was 1 can to 15 gallons. Now it's 1:10. But read the bottle's label; the ratio has changed at least once. HEET's cheap insurance, keep a couple bottles handy, and put one in when you fill up.
    And... it's not a failure if 1) everyone makes it home, and 2) nobody's in a body bag on the way home. So, no failure.
    But the best part? L O L A Lola! That was a decent adaptation and appropriation. Well done!

    You could go with old school dozer steering. There was no differential. It was a bevel gear that drove both tracks equally. There was a clutch and brake on each side. To turn you just had to declutch one side. To turn more, you applied a brake. I think the Ripsaw tank by Howe and Howe is set up the same way. The problem with differntial steering like you have set up, is when you try to stop one side, the other side HAS to speed up due to the gear ratio in the spider gears. Just bombing around (pun intended) is fine, but as soon as you put a load on it pulling, thats what overloads the drive train. Hydrostatic is nice, but requires full hydro with pumps, spool valves, and oil that gets thicker in cold weather. The mechanical drive train is more reliable.

    You removed all of the side cleats and then you slid into the guard rail and couldn't get lateral traction. Might want to put some of them back on.

    Probably the best way to drive a tracked vehicle is to use individual drive motors mounted in the rear. I can't see electric being practical, given the energy loss from the cold. A hydrostatic pump and "wheel motors" would be more efficient, but you will need to control both the high and low fluid temps to make it work well. Also, there is a mechanical reason that dozers and such mount the track drives in the rear - doing so only puts the bottom of the track under tension (moving forward) - the top of the track isn't loaded. Putting the track drives in the front increases track wear because you are now pulling the top of the track forward under load before it can go around the rear idler and pull the vehicle forward. If you look at 32:15 in the video you will see the track all wadded up under the drive hub. This is extremely hard on the track.

    Matt, not sure if anyone mentioned this. Look at using a tractor axle with wet brakes. There are also mechanical drive axles for rough terrain forklift axles that may work. I used to design equipment. If I was starting from scratch, hydraulic drives are the way to go.

    Hej Team,
    Im thinking the steering issues and the fact that the caliper fell off are symptoms of the same problem. The mounting bracket for the caliper flexes too much, so what you'll get is 2 things:
    - it will oscilate between "grabbing" and "sliding". which ruins any brake performance
    - this oscilating also caused the bolts to fail due to fatigueing.
    So instead of jumping straight to a different steering system, you could try something pretty cheap and easy: Make those mounts MUCH stronger.

    31:34 Absolutely hilarious when all the guys start dropping like flies on the uphill slog. Suddenly you can tell who does cardio. Tom is da man! And Tom being all chipper, breathing only slightly elevated, and making them all carry on a conversation just kills me! 🤣🤣🤣 Classic mind games that we play in the closing stages of an endurance race to psych out our competition. Does Tom do marathons? He obviously does something....

      Except Tom had snowshoes, if you've ever walked in snow or sand a very long way, you'll understand why the snowshoes are a HUGE benefit!

      Agreed. He brings so many untested vehicles into a recovery situation, never brings much food and water, doesn't seem to finish his projects. Drives a vehicle without a water pump for several minutes.

    Just to try and help you guys in the future, those 4wd actuators need exactly 12 volts to work, if this ever happens to you again you can run a wire to the positive side of the actuator from the battery, and it will engage again something sucks about those and the actuator will be good but the part that supplies the power won’t give enough, they suck

    I just found out that my younger brother spent some time last week designing a steering system for the Bombi and sent it to Tom. I really suggest checking that out because he's amazing. Just a little background on my little brother too. He almost died a couple years ago from a brain infection and was left with severe brain injury. so for him to actually design you a steering system says a lot about how much he likes you guys. He had to sleep all weekend to recover from designing that system. I really enjoy your content as well and watch all your stuff. keep up the awesome work and thank you for entertaining my brother.

    i love how prepared tom is. when it rains i have rain gear in my bag so when i walk to work i'm not caught unprepared. its no different than if i go somewhere without a snatchblock , pull pal, and tree savers. lifes easier when you're prepared

    Ever considered wet disc brakes like farm tractors and heavy equipment use? Very low maintenance. Hydrostatic would mean a major rework to add a pump, oil reservoir, cooling. Plus hydrostatic generates heat. Slap a big John Deere or New Holland (Ford) diff under there hook up brake linkages and you're done (tractor diffs already have individual brakes for brake steering)

    Matt needs some huge semi truck brakes on the front to make the bombi turn better and I could probably help him with that if he lets me come to the matts offroad recovery compound i wouldent charge nothing i would come fix it just for fun ive been building bombis since 1997

    If the water pump isn't turning the temperature gauge is not accurate, it takes the temperature of the water as it's pumped thru the thermostat housing or water inlet, you would want to check the oil Temp but don't think that model has a oil Temp sensor, next best would be a infrared temperature gun to take temp readings of various spots on the engine

    Matt, you didnt fail my friend, this is just another step into improving the Bombi and you will in due time, dont rush things take your time into research on how snow cats or bombi's operate and go from that. You got this Matt you have a great crew to back you up and help you all the way, i wish i still had that drive in me to fix vehicles but i lost it and unsure how to gain it back, i've prayed to god for assistance but no answer yet, i used to be just as active as you all but not anymore sadly and the bummer part is doctors refused me to work so i sit at home doing nothing being bored out of my mind, best of luck Matt oh and to your crew please continue to be there for Matt and each other, God Bless you guys.

    You guys should call Edison Motors. They're working on a DIY series hybrid system for heavy duty pickups. Whatever generator they pick will be plenty large for the bombi's engine, then you just need a 150kW motor for each side of the tracks. It would be considerably more controllable.... and efficient.

    You should be using a 14 bolt axle. They are robust enough for the ripsaw. That should work wonderfully for the smaller lighter bombi

    4x4 tip: when it won’t engage, and you have a light on at the switch pull the t case fuse (# 2 I believe) wait 45-60 seconds while waiting turn key on and off 5 x put fuse back in and it might work. This clears the codes and let’s it function one more time sometimes twice.

    Matt and team pulled the rabbit out of the hat again and the team effort saved everyone's bacon! Well done all in spite of the odds against you. The old car rally saying applies, "Press on Regardless!" HIgh Fives to all especially the gracious staff at the diner, above and beyond the call. Matt and team always show great respect for those in the service industries they come in contact with. Another epic recovery "not according to plan!"

    I havent watched Matt's videos for a whil maybe a year. this video is so funny because it embrases the fun of offroading ( getting stuck, and taking the most fun of it). also, watching the bamni ( for me ) for the first time after seeing it being restored. I realy enjoyed watching this video, it is so funny. especialy with Rorry being in it .
