    Rhett with his brace's off.
    Toms beard shaved looking all fresh faced. And with Katelynn playing a big role in this recovery, it looks like you've got a fresh new MORR crew.

  • @bobmazzi7435
    @bobmazzi7435 ปีที่แล้ว

    Matt, have you considered a "tow bar" type setup to latch in where the D-Rings are on the back of the wrecker and bolt into the towed vehicles trailer hitch? You would still do the lifting with the boom and winch, but the tow bar would keep the tow from surging forward and running into the back of the wrecker. The Holmes 440 that I ran ages ago had a sling and straps arrangement that had an A brace that kept the tow from surging forward. I don't know that a sling makes sense with lots of aftermarket bumpers to cut them, but the brace would seem to.

    • @garymoon2829

      Matt replies occasionally to all the suggestions like this, saying that a more rigid link is incompatible with the very un-level terrain on most recoveries.
      With a skilled driver like Katelynn on a recovery, maybe all these "suggestions" for a tow bar or sling etc are just not necessary!

      It's great that they can support this with the TH-cam videos and the app subscriptions. Otherwise, recovery from some of these situations would be hideously expensive for the person who breaks down on the trail.
      The usual choice is to get a bunch of wheeling enthusiasts together to slowly work the victim out of the jam, but that can take days and often involves collateral damage. With Matt (and Paul and Rory in there respective territories) and others like him, there's a way to get out a lot quicker, and we get to watch.

    Matt- we need a book out of you. “Off-road recovery in the American Southwest” so many of us from Denver to San Francisco have found ourselves in the accursed wastelands and the snowy pinyon- juniper elevations- possibly in need of a little help if we weren’t accompanied by like- minded friends. A LOT of recovery gets handled by one’s group/club. But if someone is alone and the music stops- there’s you. And they have a deep existential decision to make. Your family (and dog) oriented aid gives off-road-hopefuls a dose of the realities involved. Do I want to pursue this, or should I figure something else out ? You’re giving second chances to the curious. The Off-road Industry needs you.

    Have you ever considered using 24 volt for your winches, especially as long as your winch ropes are? Double the speed with the same pulling force. The diagram an auto electrician sent me long ago, which I just wasted an hour looking for before posting this, allows you to switch between 12 and 24 volts, like some rock crawlers use for competitions, and doesn't affect the rest of the vehicles electrical system. It just connects dual batteries, in their own loop, into a 24 volt line instead of 12 volt. So you run out 100 feet of line and only needed 25 (yes I've seen you work haha) you switch to 24 volt and reel that sucker in and then for more control you switch to 12 volts, easy as.

    Matt why don't you design a bar that attaches to the rear bumper and straps to the axle of the vehicle that is being towed. this bar would maintain the distance between the towed car and the wrecker. no worries that the towed car might swing into the boom or the wrecker bumper. Just a suggestion.

    Matt, with that Jeep situation being close to the boom. I would fabricate an adjustable length full swivel (both ends) boom to come off your wrecker mount level with the average hitch receiver, and plug into the receiver and lift with the winch as you do now. Would maintain a constant gap between wrecker and towed vehicle.

    For these instances have you ever thought about making a bar that you can use in your pintle hitch to the vehicle receiver that would help with the issue of the vehicle slamming into the boom?

  • @aaronmagee8652
    @aaronmagee8652 ปีที่แล้ว

    Longtime listener, first time caller here from New Zealand.
    I've got a question that's been bugging me for quite some time now.
    Why don't you run a hard bar between the wrecker and what it's towing? Just something with with one or two swivel points that connect onto some common area like the tow receiver. That would alow the wrecker to go down hill without being rolled into.

    oh! and as for the replacing Lizzy question.... this woman is crazy! i bet she's the 1st to roll over any of "Matt's Recuvery" vehicles!, and she will scream in pleasure at the same time!

    Make an attachment that goes in the center Pintle hook and in the square receiver of the the disabled vehicle not to hold weight but to keep it away from the boom. Could also be adjustable with pins and holes

    I keep commenting about an idea for when doing lift-towing and the need to not run into the boom. How about a solid pole with ball-ends and adapters into the wrecker rear and the towed vehicle receiver? It could be adjustable for length. Seems a simple piece of bridge building but I have not yet gotten a comment on it

  • @mmodtomic7119
    @mmodtomic7119 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I know you like to do the most with the least, but a couple of out-riggers to keep a towed vehicle from bumping into the boom would make life a bunch easier. Heck, build them with springs and shocks to make it interesting!

  • @chrisanderson4799

    Matt
    Why not build a tow bar that utilizes 2 hard points on the back of the wrecker like a “Y” then goes out with a single piece of steel that is adjustable in length with a fully articulated pintle ring.
    Then in the disabled vehicles hitch you could slap in a standard pintle receiver. This would prevent the disabled vehicle from smashing into your wreckers boom.
    Of course you would still lift in the same manner or could even lift via this tow bar if the disabled vehicle lacked lift points

  • @Hamthe110
    @Hamthe110 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    For the future worth making a bar that goes into the towed vehicles reciever hitch and then the other end secures to the wrecker and thw bar could have a heavy duty shock absorber to take the edge off of shock loading either vehicle ? Make the bar adjustable length so you can pick and choose the distance between the towed vehicles roof and wrecker boom

    Many years ago I used to flat tow cars and I ran a chain through a length of pipe.The chain was looped around anchor points on each car with bolt and nut. This prevented the towed car from hitting the towing car. Think some version of this method would work for you.

  • @alfworks

    Suggestion -- why not put a steel rod on heim joints/ball joints between the Wrecker and pulled car? that would keep the distance and avoid swinging the car towards the boom.

  • @wrtrmike
    @wrtrmike ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Matt, get yourself a appropriate length of pipe or tubing and either attack a chain on each end or thread your chain threw the pipe then attach at each end to where the pipe hangs just low enough on your towed vehicle to stop it from catching up to the wrecker as you tow. Finish the ends of the pipe/chain as you think fit.

    Hi MORR Team, I recommend that you add a tire (no wheel) while pulling with the wrecker. You should route the winch cables that come out of the boom/arm through a 15” tire. The tire will work as a bumper. This my dad’s and uncle’s old pulling trick. Thanks for sharing and best of luck🤞

    Make a set of off-road dollys. Electric trailer brakes hooked to the wreaker. Then you have no need for a brake person in a car. Either use a brake controller on brake pedal or add a separate manual button and ratio ealily accessible.

    Matt I'm sorry I've been wanting to tell you for over a year to make a triangular bar you can pin to the back of the wrecker that goes to the receiver on the vehicle you are recovering. Make it so you can pin the point of the triangle into their receiver and build in a ball swivel for extreme flex between vehicles. You should make it adjustable to make more or less distance from the wrecker boom/cable to the recovered vehicle. You will never need someone holding the brakes. Just a small word of wisdom from a person that has done off-road recovery since the 70s. Since the 80s with the Binderbird,,,,,,

  • @pmichaelbowden3800

    You need two poles that can attach to the two loops on the back of the wrecker, be crossed over each other and firmly attached to the vehicle being towed to keep it stable side to side like your crossed straps but also keep the distance when going downhill.

    Just wondering, can't you make some kind of pivoting bar to attach between the heavy wrecker (MOHW) and the recovered vehicle. Especially when you rescue on obsticals like this one. That way it would keep the vehicle back enough that the boom wouldn't hit and the vehicle wouldn't roll into the HW.
    Just a suggestion.
    Love watching! Thank you!

    1) how does the rear steering on the heavy wrecker work? Is it just proportional, or is there a separate control?
