Honestly, I disliked George Lucas for some of the decisions he’s made; but I do feel bad he doesnt get enough credit. The man is a visioneer and wanted to move away from the traditional format of filmmaking; and I respect that. Edit: Since my original comment, my opinion on Lucas has somewhat changed; he was definitely a masterful world builder and creative but lacked as a filmmaker. He was very timid and offered little direction to the actors. A New Hope was actually saved in the edit by his wife at the time, who managed to effectively tell a better story with the footage shot and fix many pacing issues. She, the crew, artists and animators deserve just a much credit as he.

The Separatists were about to assemble the largest droid army in history and would've started a horrible war. Imagine if Palpatine didn't get those emergency powers to have the Clone army rally to back up the Jedi. A ton of the Jedi, including Anakin and Obi-wan, would've died in one fell swoop. No Luke, no Leia, and no Anakin bringing balance would have occurred. In a way, Jar Jar saved the galaxy since if Sidious didn't rally the Clone army he could've had the empire last for hundreds of years if he really did discover how to live after death or attain immortality in Canon and Legends timelines. Jar Jar is the real hero.

I'm rewatching currently and there is a handful of really enjoyable Jar Jar episodes. I actually had such a blast with the episode where he was pretending to be a Jedi on Naboo. I personally like Jar Jar, but I can see why he got criticism.
Jar Jar was an groundbreaking character digitally. The subsurface scattering shader code ILM developed was used on Gollum. I worked on Gollum development at WETA Digital. We were all inspired by ILM's achievement.
If Jar Jar had actually been likeable in the first movie, revealing him as Palpatine's master would have been potentially a better twist than the Darth Vader father twist. It took the internet 15 years to even conceive of it.
The whole "Jar Jar is a Sith Lord" theory is very convincing. And indeed there are real hints coming from both George Lucas and Ahmed Best that there is more to Jar Jar than the audience realizes. But neither confirms it. If it were true, why hasn't Lucas finally admitted it by now? It's 2020. What does he have to lose?

Other emblematic scene of Jar Jar thougts and emotion is when he talks to Queen Amidala on Coruscant. He is worried about his people, but also very proud of them. When moron fans say Jar Jar is not a real character and only a comic relief, they simply don't pay attention to the goddamn movie

@ Friends? Family? He had 4 squadmates. That's it. One died on Jakku, the other was the traitor trooper who hates him for what he did. It doesn't seem like the first order wants much compassion or comraderie from its troops, just like the empire. They punish them for staying behind or trying to help fallen comrades, instead prioritising pushing forward at any cost. Just like the empire. Finn doesn't have much love for the first order or what it stands for. I wish there was more to his story as it did have a lot of potential, but him firing on the people that oppressed him and fed him propaganda and tried to brainwash him doesn't feel wrong to me.

Clone Wars made me appreciate Jar Jar a lot more. His character isn't fundamentally different, but the situations he was put in played to his strengths more than the prequels did.
When Jar Jar jumps into the lake, right as Qui-gon & Obiwan walk in behind him, you can hear the emperor’s laugh. Even Qui-gon turns around before he submerges, recognizing evil. That was a sound design and was put in that movie for a reason.

Rose-colored glasses. Many people made fun of the originals in the 70s, early 80s. Sci-fi was still not respected by many. The Jawa's were the butt of many jokes and dont get me started with what was said about the Ewoks. The only difference is that the internet hyper-inflated opinions when the prequels came out much like it does with every single topic today. I was 21 when Phantom Menace was released my friends and I went and saw it and my friends thought that the movie was ruined by Jar Jar. I told my friends that I believe Jar Jar is going to play a important roll in later movies and my friends thought I was crazy until we saw Revenge of the Sith. My friends really didn't understand Jar Jar's roll until I explained it to them. My friends just saw how annoying her was (Yes I agree) but I looked past that. Tons of people gave Lucas so much shit but I thought Lucas was genius for creating Jar Jar and Lucas's idea for where he was going. Im 22 now and grew up watching the prequels (they are the best movies to me) and i thought that jar jar was a great addition to the movies even though he wasnt in my favorite characters
"JarJar will never let you down" If you think he's good; Betrayed his people to the Sith If you think he's bad; Took years to convince the Senate to side with the Chancellor & offered no more help If you think he's neutral; Betrayed his people to the Sith, cost the Empire a key battle and almost killed the good guys multiple times, especially by guiding them past the dangerous fish he *knew* were there. I am 27 and never had problems with Jar Jar. Even liked him in PM, but I was about 8 when it released, so that's may be why I liked him. Remember, people who now criticise Jar Jar were adults when they first saw him and grew up with other kid-friendly characters like C3-P0 and Chewbacca, who were different than Jar Jar. But believe me, if Jar Jar was in original trilogy and C3 and Chewie appeared first in PM, they would hate them as much as they did Jar Jar. They just have nostalgia glasses. Some young people dislike C3-P0's typical boomer type of humor.

I've been making licensed merchandise for nearly thirty years. I worked closely with Lucasfilm in the late nineties and early naughties. The idea of Jar Jar as being a skilled warrior who employed 'drunken fighting' techniques was even more explicit in early versions of the character. When we first started working on designs for Ep I merchandise before the film was complete, the renders we were sent of Jar Jar showed him brandishing weapons, kung fu style, the Gungan spear and the bolas.
As one of the kids who grew up with jar jar. I love jar jar, I'm 27 now and jar jar was the least of the prequal's sins in all honesty. Kids dont give a fuck about trade talk and politics. They want to see aliens and new worlds.
Jar Jar and Teek will always be my favorite Star Wars characters and 'THX-1138' will always be one of the best dystopian films of all time! Literally *all* of George's movies have a Jar Jar-esque character to some degree, even 'THX-1138'. *Note:* Ahmed did the Best he could with what he was given to work with. Also, his "never let you down" speech was beautiful. Jar Jar has more than a few traits in common with Vash the Stampede.
As a classic Star Wars fan making Jar Jar Palpatines true apprentice would have been epic. To have him go from using his normal voice to a true dark lord's voice during the reveal would have been amazing.
Could you imagine if JarJar cameos in The Rise of Skywalker. With modern CGI and everything. How bizarre would that be to see? The goofiest, clumsiest, buffoon of a character that ever came out in the Star Wars trilogy was, Yoda. When Luke let out his frustration with regard to having travelled all that way to such a dismal planet, it was only then that Yoda revealed himself to be a great Jedi Master. When I first watched Episode I in theaters, I wondered, "Is Jar Jar, a Sith Master?" However, when Darth Maul was slain, and Windu mentioned the Rule of two, and Yoda explained how there could only be two Sith at a time, I got confused. I deduce Lucas caved to pressure and did not continue with whatever plans he had with Jar Jar, as he had about two scenes of significance in II, and was a moot character in III.
Rule of two dosent mean there are only two sith. Thats just one sith philosphy some sith follow. Theres plenty of examples of more than two sith existing at one time

I’m 30 years older and love the prequels too. I found Jar-Jar funny when Ep. I came out, and today I would love to see Darth Jar-Jar.
Honestly, I disliked George Lucas for some of the decisions he’s made; but I do feel bad he doesnt get enough credit. The man is a visioneer and wanted to move away from the traditional format of filmmaking; and I respect that.
Edit: Since my original comment, my opinion on Lucas has somewhat changed; he was definitely a masterful world builder and creative but lacked as a filmmaker. He was very timid and offered little direction to the actors. A New Hope was actually saved in the edit by his wife at the time, who managed to effectively tell a better story with the footage shot and fix many pacing issues. She, the crew, artists and animators deserve just a much credit as he.

The Separatists were about to assemble the largest droid army in history and would've started a horrible war. Imagine if Palpatine didn't get those emergency powers to have the Clone army rally to back up the Jedi.
A ton of the Jedi, including Anakin and Obi-wan, would've died in one fell swoop. No Luke, no Leia, and no Anakin bringing balance would have occurred.
In a way, Jar Jar saved the galaxy since if Sidious didn't rally the Clone army he could've had the empire last for hundreds of years if he really did discover how to live after death or attain immortality in Canon and Legends timelines.

If Jar Jar had actually been likeable in the first movie, revealing him as Palpatine's master would have been potentially a better twist than the Darth Vader father twist. It took the internet 15 years to even conceive of it.
The whole "Jar Jar is a Sith Lord" theory is very convincing. And indeed there are real hints coming from both George Lucas and Ahmed Best that there is more to Jar Jar than the audience realizes. But neither confirms it. If it were true, why hasn't Lucas finally admitted it by now? It's 2020. What does he have to lose?

It doesn't seem like the first order wants much compassion or comraderie from its troops, just like the empire. Clone Wars made me appreciate Jar Jar a lot more. His character isn't fundamentally different, but the situations he was put in played to his strengths more than the prequels did.
When Jar Jar jumps into the lake, right as Qui-gon & Obiwan walk in behind him, you can hear the emperor’s laugh. Even Qui-gon turns around before he submerges, recognizing evil. That was a sound design and was put in that movie for a reason.

I was 21 when Phantom Menace was released my friends and I went and saw it and my friends thought that the movie was ruined by Jar Jar. I told my friends that I believe Jar Jar is going to play a important roll in later movies and my friends thought I was crazy until we saw Revenge of the Sith. My friends really didn't understand Jar Jar's roll until I explained it to them. My friends just saw how annoying her was (Yes I agree) but I looked past that. I've been making licensed merchandise for nearly thirty years. I worked closely with Lucasfilm in the late nineties and early naughties. The idea of Jar Jar as being a skilled warrior who employed 'drunken fighting' techniques was even more explicit in early versions of the character. When we first started working on designs for Ep I merchandise before the film was complete, the renders we were sent of Jar Jar showed him brandishing weapons, kung fu style, the Gungan spear and the bolas.
As one of the kids who grew up with jar jar. I love jar jar, I'm 27 now and jar jar was the least of the prequal's sins in all honesty. Kids dont give a fuck about trade talk and politics. They want to see aliens and new worlds.

Jar Jar and Teek will always be my favorite Star Wars characters and 'THX-1138' will always be one of the best dystopian films of all time! Literally *all* of George's movies have a Jar Jar-esque character to some degree, even 'THX-1138'.
*Note:* Ahmed did the Best he could with what he was given to work with. Also, his "never let you down" speech was beautiful. Jar Jar has more than a few traits in common with Vash the Stampede.

The goofiest, clumsiest, buffoon of a character that ever came out in the Star Wars trilogy was, Yoda. When Luke let out his frustration with regard to having travelled all that way to such a dismal planet, it was only then that Yoda revealed himself to be a great Jedi Master. When I first watched Episode I in theaters, I wondered, "Is Jar Jar, a Sith Master?" However, when Darth Maul was slain, and Windu mentioned the Rule of two, and Yoda explained how there could only be two Sith at a time, I got confused. I deduce Lucas caved to pressure and did not continue with whatever plans he had with Jar Jar, as he had about two scenes of significance in II, and was a moot character in III.
Rule of two dosent mean there are only two sith. Thats just one sith philosphy some sith follow. Theres plenty of examples of more than two sith existing at one time
@@dtj4232my confusion was with whether may have been a Sith Master or not. I know that Sith under the Bane lineage seldom stuck to the rule. This included Plagueis's master, Darth Tenebrous who had two apprentices, and Plagueis also did not care much when Sidious had Maul as an apprentice.

George is soooo sad! I hate it! He made this character he loved and had a plan for, but was just spat on by the general audience.
they should have added jar jar to solo and rogue in a small but dark role for redemption...oh well it was a missed opportunity
Loved all the movies and I love the prequels, always have. I also love Jar jar as a character. It is the fan’s fault that he sold Star Wars.
