Ran into Pat Simmons in an antique store in Saratoga, CA a million years ago. He was looking at a Tiffany (yes, a real Tiffany) lamp. I was so star struck I just stared at him! Didn't say a word, just stared!
Pat Simmons is the “glue” that holds the Doobie Brothers together, appearing on every Doobie Brothers album. Doesn’t matter who’s the leader of the band….Tom Johnston or Michael McDonald.
What he did was double tracked his vocals. Something we used to do in the studio. You record the lead vocals on one track and then do the same lead vocals on another track. It gives it a really neat unique sound.
Since I’m in the Bay Area I’ve seen them MANY Times!! I remember being in a choral group and singing this right before we hit the stage in HS. Love them!!! 💖💞💗
The Doobies have a wide range of sound..I personally love the early Doobies before Michael Mcdonald. My sons were blown away once when this came on, and me, my sisters and our husbands all stopped what we were doing and sang the whole song.. and we automatically fell into different parts when they hit the ending😄😄. They still say we had to have practiced! We also do a pretty good Seven Bridges Road by the Eagles😆. Great memories, guys.
This is without Michael McDonald but a fantastic tune. That’s probably why it sounds a little different to you. Like the Eagles, it’s not always the same lead singer.
The Doobs were better WITHOUT Michael McDonald. He took what had been a rock and blues band and turned it into an R&B/pop band. Ok if that's your thing. Not mine.
Well, I liked both incarnations of the Doobies. Michael McDonald joined the Doobies as lead singer when the original lead was ill and had to leave the band for an extended period, not sure but I think it was a couple years. When he recovered he was welcomed back into the band and both he and McDonald lead the band. McDonald began his career as a studio backup singer, you will hear him on a lot of Steely Dan albums.
EXACTLY what I wanted to say. I can't remember what movie or tv show I first heard that quote, but yep. The fiddle is a different instrument all together!
According to a violin player I know, the technical difference between a violin and a fiddle is that there is a higher, somewhat more rounded arc on a violin's bridge (the doohickey that holds the strings up away from the body of the instrument) than on a fiddle's, which has a much flatter curve. The flatter curve makes it easier for the fiddle player to play double stops (which means, to play two strings at once with the same stroke of the bow).
Saw them live a number of times in the 70's and early 80's. Had backstage passes for one concert and got to meet a number of the members. One of my favorite bands back in the day.
This song included a technique called a "round", where there are two different parts sung against each other, makes it super interesting. One early morning after the gig was done, years ago in Fairbanks, Alaska, our drummer started this "acapella" at the bar and we had the whole place singing for about a half hour
That is a swampy southern rock/ delta blues tune With the healthy dose of New Orleans Dixieland Jazz and Bluegrass. just a blend of great American music from the south makes this song groove so much. The instruments are the acoustic guitar tuned to double drop D and two guitar tracks, a bass guitar, Viola, an auto harp, wind chimes, drums and percussion. Plus 4 vocalists total contributing to the harmony vocals. Their best track imo.
Love the Doobies. At 55 I feel so fortunate to have grown up in the era of music that I have. Probably the best fifty years of music that there was or ever will be. It's nice to see some of the younger crowd finding all this incredible stuff.

My personal favorite is "South City, Midnight Lady." To be honest you can't go wrong with their catalog. The Doobie Brothers have a really solid collection of tunes to choose from.
The Doobie Brothers were in a league of their own. I saw them in concert three times in the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. They were fantastic every time. I was 18 in 1979 and will never forget how good they were and are.
Doobie Brothers hold a special place in my heart. They came out of San Jose CA. That's where I was born. My two older brothers actually went to High School with the two founding members of the band. Try China Grove or Long Train Running.
Remember. The music of the 70’s is well thought out and developed. Singers and songwriters took pride in their music and worked to develop their craft as singers and songwriters. Basically, they don’t want to give you everything all at once. Pace yourself as you listen. There are always little nuggets hidden in the song. The Doobie Brothers have this sound with this lead and then they have the Michael McDonald years. Both are incredible! Listen to more.
This is one of my favorite songs from The Doobie Brothers. I believe what you're trying to describe and how it sounds, is an accent. It takes you down to the Louisiana, New Orleans sound. I love it.
This has a little soft bluegrass feel to it. Makes you wish you were on a raft floating a river. THis is one of those songs i always wanted to be a 8 minute or better session. It just ends too soon. There is a live version of this out there as well.
I love seeing your reactions to most of the music I grew up on. Your reactions take me back to when I first heard it and wondrous magic it created for me. Thank you!
This song is my Favorite one. Brings me back to a memory I well cherish. A special young man, my cousin in law who loved this song. He was killed in an accident. Resurrection In Paradise Johnny.
These are the Doobie Brothers pre Michael McDonald .Love the fiddle in "Black water".They are great ."Listen to the music", "Long Train Running ",and "China Grove"are my personal favorites.
One of their best! . The band released so many great tracks , but their earlier 'country' inspired songs for me were their best. A couple of lesser known songs like Daughters of the Sea and For Someone Special are wonderful too. You don't have to look far to find more beautiful music.
There are two Doobie Brother periods. This was the first period, before Michael Mcdonald joined up. After he did, a lot of that "blue eyed soul" sound came into it with songs like "Takin' It To The Streets" or "What A Fool Beleives". Both periods are excellent.
I have great memories of this song in my early teen years. The dreamy violin sounds and funky upbeat danceable choeus. My 2nd fave Doobie tune. First is Take Me In Your Arms (Rock me a Little While). Its an upbeat ode to a woman leaving him and his drsperate plea for more time in her presence. Sad lyrics to a upbeat wonderful danceable chorus. Take a listen and be blessed! ♡

@@larrywt656 There are many southern rock bands that aren't originally from the south. Where the band originated has nothing to do with it.
This Song is definitely a vibe.
I play it all the time at cook outs.
I love seeing your reactions to most of the music I grew up on. Your reactions take me back to when I first heard it and wondrous magic it created for me. Thank you!
I never thought of the Doobie Brothers as an acquired taste, but I guess they are. This is one of my favorites.
I've been waiting for this. Told my wife yesterday.
Me too! Their Reactions are so fun to watch. Also the songs bring my mind purpose to stir amazing memories. lol
Saw them in concert in South MS and when this song started it was sooo emotional.. people cried. It was a fantastic concert.
Joy to the world - Three dog night. It is a catchy tune! Locomotive Breath - Jethro Tull.
South City Midnight Lady and Another Park, Another Sunday are a couple of really good tunes!
This one of my favorites! Now you need to do "Long Train Running." It's great.
I like the way her face lights up when the instruments pause and the harmonies start.
This song is my Favorite one. Brings me back to a memory I well cherish. A special young man, my cousin in law who loved this song. He was killed in an accident. Resurrection In Paradise Johnny.
I went to high school with Pat Simmons- the composer and singer of this classic.
This song is on my playlist, love the lyrics and tunes
That's why the music of the 1970s was so good, you got vastly different sounds and tempos within one song.
Hard to believe you can't remember one of the most iconic bands ever.
Distinct blue grass with the fiddle and rhythm. My favorite Doobies Song!
❤🎵 SO Classic ! Great memories ! " I'd like to hear some funky Dixieland" -- I hear a lot of people singing out there 😎
Doobie Brothers are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They were one of my favorites back in the day and still are.
I love this song 🥰
These are the Doobie Brothers pre Michael McDonald .Love the fiddle in "Black water".They are great ."Listen to the music", "Long Train Running ",and "China Grove"are my personal favorites.
Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) has plenty of violin magic: Roll Over Beethoven, Livin' Thing, Sweet Talkin' Woman.
Yes, yes, yes and Mr Blue Sky too. The ultimate happy song according to scientific studies, apparently! Tho’ I also love All Over The World.
Yes! Mr. Blue Sky is such a happy song.
It’s the difference in the cadence❤ demonstrates greatness
Love the Doobie Brothers, especially ‘China Grove’ , ‘Listen To The Music’, ‘Jesus is Just Alright’, and on and on it goes!
A favorite !!! Excellent band. So fun in concert.
One of their best! . The band released so many great tracks , but their earlier 'country' inspired songs for me were their best. A couple of lesser known songs like Daughters of the Sea and For Someone Special are wonderful too. You don't have to look far to find more beautiful music.
The Doobie Brothers and The Eagles are two of the greatest bands for harmonizing.
Would love to hear more 80s bands like Duran Duran, Depeche Mode, The Cure, The Smiths, Echo and the Bunnymen, Crowded House, Culture Club.
Erasure, The Communards, Midnight Oil…
Check out JayVeeTV for more 80s vibes. And he’s easy on the eyes.
Yes!
The Christians were another great 80's band, check out their Happy in Hell album, it's fantastic!
Whew, thats a mess!
This song has always fed my soul. I love the vocals
