    In their beginning the Doobie Brothers had Tom Johnston (singer in this video) on guitar and lead vocals starting in ’1970. Later in 1975 Johnston had health issues and the Doobies hired Michael McDonald as a keyboard player and lead vocalist, to give some relief to Johnston. Obviously Johnston was irreplaceable (just as Michael McDonald is) and the music style changed. Some hated it, some loved it (I loved BOTH styles). However they NEVER lost their tight 3-part harmony. Both Johnston & McDonald have since shared the same stage with their amazing talents. DOOBIES ROCK!!!!

      When Michael joined in my opinion they got more pop and commercial. It was ok but I to preferred when Tom was there it was pure rock and blues. It had more get up and go the production was way better. The musicianship was good ol rock and roll. I just liked them better in there early days. Still love Doobies and always will. I remember Chinagrove in 7th grade. Even though that wasn’t a up beat rock song it’s still one of my favorites from them. Jesus is just all right is probably my favorites.

    One of their early hits. Going back over what you've already reacted to, I'm shocked that you haven't done "China Grove". The guitar riff in that one is one of their best! "Take Me In Your Arms (Rock Me) is a total rockin' vibe. "Takin' It To the Streets" is great, and so is "Real Love". Their last big hit, in 1989, was "The Doctor", and it's a terrific bookend to the Doobie's amazing run. While I'm at it, I'd like to request "Right Place, Wrong Time" by Dr. John, a great musician you haven't reacted to yet.

    Tom Johnston was the original guitarist and vocalist for the Doobie Brothers who sang in so many of their early hits. Tom was very soulful. Michael McDonald came in as a keyboardist lead vocalist after Tom left for health issues. Both Tom and Michael are currently with the Doobies on their 50th Anniversary tour. Different sound per the eras of Tom and Michael since both had their own unique vibe and soul.

    In a way the Doobie's have two era's. Pre McDonald and after he joined. In both phases they're fantastic and hit all of the right buttons to be one of the best bands ever.

      @@porflepopnecker4376 Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. The band kept putting out hits with McDonald and that's what matters. The Doobie Brothers are still a great band with a wider catalog of material than they might of otherwise have had.

    Tom Johnson, the singer-songwriter of this song, performed this song for years as a throwaway song that he never had any fixed lyrics to before being convinced to record it. He said that the lyrics he finally settled on were inspired by the song City of New Orleans by Arlo Guthrie which is a beautiful song you definitely should do and react to

    • @tjhunger5656
      @tjhunger5656 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@garyarnett1220 Regarding the lyrics, Johnston said: "None of that stuff really had any basis in anything. It was just out the top of my head, which, quite frankly, is where all lyrics come from. Songwriting's a weird thing, and everybody does it differently. For me, I always write the music first, the words come later. But I've had songs that just seem to write themselves, and those are blessings for me, because you don't have to sit there and strain your brain for hours trying to come up with the lyrics, it seems like they just flow out on the paper, and you don't even have to think. Other songs, like 'Long Train Runnin'' - not that the words are that difficult or anything - it's just finding the words that I thought fit the track. Took me a long time. I got into the whole train mode, and it's just stuff that comes into your head. It's not like I had a point of reference with anybody named Lucy, I had been around trains on and off throughout my life. Coming from the Central Valley in California, there's a lot of trains running up and down that valley. And I assume that's where some of that stuff probably came from. And Arlo Guthrie released a popular train song the previous year: "City of New Orleans." Both songs mention the Illinois Central train in the lyrics.

    "Long Train Runnin' " was the Doobie Brothers 3rd Billboard Hot 100 charting single & 1st in the Top 10, peaking @ #8 in 1973. Their 1st charted single was "Listen To the Music" which almost hit the Top 10, peaking @ #11 in 1972. In between those was "Jesus Is Just Alright" which hit #35.

      Thanks, Mr. Whit...ness. ;) They had 16 Top 40 hits, 5 Top 10s, and two #1s (both of which they've reacted to). The next highest-charting song they do, if they were selecting that way, would be "Real Love" (a great song).

      @@Shrykespeare Hey Patrick. I couldn't remember which Doobie Bros songs they had already reacted to before giving a recommendation, so I just did a search: 1) Listen to the Music, 2) What a Fool Believes, 3) Black Water, 4) Long Train Runnin' and then I saw a weird title: "Give Me That Beat Boy" credited to TDB - which is really "Drift Away" by DOBIE Gray. Somehow this never got corrected? Not sure cuz I guess this reaction was before I started watching. But for what it's worth....
      I would be happy with "Real Love" as the next one. Maybe "Minute By Minute" or "Takin' It To the Streets" after that?

Unfortunately--but also, happily-- we left the state for a family event and have to miss the show, which was actually rescheduled from a month ago. I gave the tickets to my neighbor, who was excited and said the last "Doobie" he saw was at Woodstock! Lol! Know he is rocking out to this great band as I write this.

    This is the “disco” remix … it’s great,but the original is better. Doobie Brothers have two original lead singers - Pat Simmons (the voice on Black Water, Toulouse Street, South City Midnight Lady, Jesus Is Just Alright, …) and TomJohnston (the voice on Long Train Runnin’’, China Grove, Listen To The Music, …). When Tom suffered a breakdown, Michael Macdonald stepped in with his soulful voice to become the third lead singer (What A Fool Believes, and others). The Doobie Brothers have been playing together for more than 50 years!
