There's actually a darker history of the original mugen devs. they did a kickstarter type fund raiser, and it was for mugen to be a side scroller shooter game. however, it functioned better as a 2d fighter. gained a large following, and many people donated to the cause. The devs launched the engine for dos initially. then built a solid linux version, but was hard to create characters due to the major fan base being on windows systems. so they teased everyone with a working beta of the "mugen for windows". and asked for more money from the fans, to finish making the windows version stable. This is the dark part. After receiving a LOT of money from investors/fans. they just vanished. Took the money and ran. it was at least 6 months before someone reversed engineered the windows beta, and released the now, hacked open source code. after hundreds of characters were created, many game version compilations built, and the mugen scene blowing up, they was still no word from any dev. after about a year, people started making characters for their own custom build, and made them more stable and high frame rate than even the AAA titles of the era. They wanted to charge fans for these builds, on a "stolen" engine. THAT'S when the original mugen devs finally came back, and made a big stink about what happened to the windows engine. After fans fixed their windows beta, and made it a polished, finished game engine, ready to code easily by even average pc users. They wanted to sue everyone for the work everyone else did for them, and make everyone that used the engine, pay for the games they compiled. The mugen scene took a huge nose dive during this time. MANY great creators quit. which made Fake creators pop up everywhere. Stealing the works, and changing the credits to their names. MANY of the characters used today, that were ripped from REAL fighting games, are just stolen sprites from the original creators. stolen sprites became so bad, even the devs backed off, because they must've realized the case was pointless among so many cheaters. The devs got what they deserved, for stealing the donations from fans to finish the windows version to be stable, and bailing on them. I was there from the start of mugen. from the 3d side scroller idea/demo, to the downfall of the community. the number 1 site for all thing mugen, used to be "The Mugen Fighter Guild" which had countless creator pages, hundreds of characters from all over the world, to a meer shell of what once was. mugenguild.com. I myself quit, when this crap all went down. I used to compile full games for people. It took me a hot minute to find it again it’s Cyberpunk 2077 Night City 3D by tigregoods. That transition isn’t from the stage though that’s a mechanic The Melancholy has (which I think itself is pulled from Guilty Gear Strive)
I think it’s more so the fact that it’s the one singular Donald that’s constantly edited. There’s probably more Ryus and Ioris but there’s so many different versions of them from different games and series I wouldn’t count them as the same kind of edits
Why do you pronounce it as mew-jin instead of moo-gen? Anyways, nice video. I.K.E.M.E.N is also a nice alternative option. A dev is currently in the works of adding rollback to the engine itself. Also, check out some actual games made with it if you haven't already. I could give you more info if you would like.
Next part I cover more of the full games in depth like The Black Heart and Hyper DBZ and I think there's more in the next few tiers after that as well. Lots of really interesting stuff especially as far as IKEMEN is concerned. As for pronunciation it's just how I've said it since like 2008, I know the Japanese word is moo-gen but I've just never said m.u.g.e.n. that way.
@Sungazer certain characters can do more than just the normal 12 palettes, something the POTS color select code works or something similar. I'm working on a game myself actually.
Are hi res sprites supported? Eg. The sprites from streets of rage 4? I’ve only seen retro pixel sprites used. That white thing at the 11:27 mark is the most detailed one I’ve seen in MUGEN.
I mean any sprites are supported but since the game officially only runs at a maximum of 1280x720 you can only get so detailed with them (so not true HD in this case). There are a ton of characters that are made from hi-res sprites, ripped 3d models and higher quality original art you just have to work around the limitation of the engine, no matter how high res the sprites are it's always gonna be squashed down to 720p
Nah the band came first, I found that out like six months after I started using this name lmao. There’s also a species of lizard called the sungazer lizard I only found out about that like a month ago
I'm looking to get into Mugen, but I have a few questions for those who have used it. I know it's not for commercial use, but is it possible to export entire games and make a completely original fighting game to call your own? Or is it a platform that characters are added to online?
So outside of commercial selling of full games you can totally make original games you just have to release them for free. That's what a lot of the fangames are; just prepacked MUGEN installations. The next part covers some more original outings like Battle Craze and Babel Sword. A lot of these games end up being made in IKEMEN however, due to more features, a most consistent engine and the option to release them with intent of monetization
Elecbyte’s download page is still up for the straight up executables with full game screenpacks available on warehousing sites like the Archive or FFA. Otherwise don’t worry too much about safety as far as characters and stages go; anything containing malware is a) exceedingly rare and b) mostly only for winmugen. As long as you’re getting your source .exes from legitimate places then you’ll be fine.
