My cousin recently told me that her mom made a quilt that she never got to finish. My aunt has been gone for 19 years now. I offered to help my cousin finish the quilt so that her kids can have a quilty hug from their grandma.
My dear sister died in 2011 at the age of 68. She left 12 unfinished quilts behind. I finished 5 of them, and her quilting girlfriends finished the rest. Watching this video made me teary, truly a work of love.
Thank you for sharing this journey with all of us. Your family is so lucky to have a wonderful woman like you in their lives to take on finishing your moms quilt tops and spreading her love. You are amazing!
Watching this series encouraged me to dig out 11 panels of red work embroidered cats that my late mother stitched for my then toddler daughter 35 years ago. My mom didn't sew so she expected me to do the quilting all along. By the time she had finished the 11th panel, my daughter Emily was born and our lives were turned upside down by her devastating diagnosis and eventual death 2 years later. The 12th panel and the original quilt were never finished. I kept those cats for all these years and this series brought them to life. My mom died in 2019 and the cats became a memory project for me. I felt my mother's presence as I stitched those 11 cats (plus some smaller panels I made for balance) into 2 lap quilts - one for the original intended recipient and the second for her younger sister. Thank you for this series of posts, they spurred me into action and a lovely memory project.
It cracked me up Kate, when while you’re working on one quilt, your mind is busy away creating your next one! I do the very same, I’ve got several ideas! Haha What a sweet sentiment, your mother’s quilts are going to their new homes!
Watching another one of your videos. Absolutely your mom is watching over you,and what a loving thing you did finishing her quilts. You are a very special lady. Even though we’ve never met,I feel like we are friends. Again thank you for sharing ❤️
Ive loved this quilt finishing series from the time you opened that suitcase. What a wonderful trip down memory lane for you, and a great service to your mother. Im sure she would be so pleased that her last quilts were finished and going to family. Well done, Kate!
Everyone leaves a some unfinished work behind. We can only hope that loving hands will pick up and complete it as you did for your Mum. Thank you for sharing this journey with us.
Lovely Kate… Each one full of special embraces… emotionally ♥️ I was fortunate to get my Moms handwritten recipes… books, & Bible… I also have a box full of Daddy’s handwritten sermons… he was an Italian Pastor for 69yrs…. These are precious to me…. Blessings Kate 🤗 🇺🇸
This has been a beautiful series of Red suitcase treasures from first opening the case to final folding in front of Agnes’s quilt Thank you Kate for sharing such precious moments 💕
They are lovely quit and Mom did the taps and you had finished. I hope your family treasures them like you’re wanting them too. You’re such an inspiration, Kate and Anna thank you.
How lovely to be able to finish and share your mum's quilts. Having recently lost my mother, I'll always be grateful that I (along with my sister, sis-in-law, and niece) was able to help her piece together a quilt for my son and his fiancee's wedding. Sadly she won't be able to see them enjoy it, but I know they will love that she made it for them. Thank you for sharing your story.
Kate, It's the day before Mother's Day and I came across your channel. Through my tears I reflect and miss my mom who passed a little over a year ago. She quilted to almost the age of 97 years, completely finished a quilt before another began and they are all hand done with her beautiful stitches. Seeing others handle the fabric with care was one thing she appreciated, and you made me think of that. I love applique and towards the end we completed a couple mother and daughter quilts which I cherish. Thank you for gently stoking my memories I've been having trouble allowing. Best wishes.
Kate, finishing these quilts was such a touching, loving tribute to your Mum. I am sure she is looking down proudly at all you’ve done to get them finished. Your family will love them. Thanks for sharing the journey with us. Sending hugs as you remember your Mum. 💗💗💗🤗🙏🏼
After my father passed, there was lumber and different saws he used in wood working. My mother wanted to sell certain pieces and get the lumber out to someone who’d use it. So we found a buyer. A father was setting up a shop for his son. After the oak and cherry planks were loaded, the young man sat beside the lumber and ran his hand across it. I knew then dad was happy! Someone would love this as much as he did. Your mother is smiling🥰 Cheryl
I'm so glad you are keeping one of your Mum's quilts for yourself❣ I miss my mom so desperately. She's been gone 16 years. But she formed and shaped me. I wish there was a phone in heaven. I'd so love to call her...
It's a dear task to complete a project for a loved one who has left us behind. My Mam passed away in 1981 and as she was a seamstress and crafter there were several incomplete items that I found and finished myself. I love having her work around my home where they fit well and thinking of her every day. Thank you for sharing your Mum's work with us, it warmed my heart to follow your journey. 💞🇨🇦
I love that you have completed your mom's quilts and it encourages me to finish my own projects, repair a much- loved quilt from my grandmother and turn three generations of handwork into a memory quilt. I also have unfinished projects from a cousin who passed last year. She loved working with tiny blocks, not my favorite, but will make cute doll quilts and most importantly finished. Thank you for reminding this Texas girl to finish projects and pass along to the next generation.
Oh kate...... this made me cry. I love "hearing " my moms voice over my shoulder. What a beautiful privilege for you to be able to finish something your mom handled. To know that she put so much thought and love into the quilt tops...💜how very special ❤️ It's so wonderful to see you feeling like yourself. I absolutely love listening to you! Take care. Much love from very cold and very very snowy Minnesota! We are receiving 16+ inches of snow right now!!!!
I’m sure your Mum was smiling down as you went through the process of finishing her beautiful quilts, Kate! They Al. Are so beautiful - a double label of love from your Mum making the tops, & you finishing them in her honor & memory! I am glad you picked the one you did for yourself!! It would have been my choice too! 💜💜💜
What a treasure your mom left for you. Such a blessing to do this with your daughter in law. Also a treasure for your family to receive them. Thank you for sharing this journey with us. Jody from South Dakota, USA
Watching this quilt series has been so enjoyable. The way you talk about your “mum” makes me think of my mother. You remind me so of myself and how I look at life. Thank you for all your hard work in producing these videos.
Lovely to see these memories completed in one way, and soon starting to make new ones! I just sent 3 to my son, partner and my youngest grandson. Was able to FaceTime to see their reactions as they opened the box and unwrapped them. The baby loved them ALL and quickly made a lovely fort to crawl in. My son is an artist, so was enthralled with my design and freemotion stitching. His partner was sooo happy, since she’s never had a handmade blanket. Great memories!
This has really gotten to my heart. The love you have put into your Mums quilts are so special and to give to your family. So much love and warmth in these quilts. I just wish I had all your energy for all you do. I have in my mind all these things I want fo do, but my body doesn’t agree with my mind. I’m 81 and in good health except for 3 shoulder surgeries and one was a total shoulder replacement and possible another coming soon. The shoulder and arm keeps me from accomplishing all these things in my mind. This as been a depressing 3 years. This is why I love your Your TH-cam.. you keep me inspired. You made me cry when you talked about your Mum was looking over your shoulder.
All of your mom's quilts are lovely, but I especially love the one you are working on in this video;I know your family members will treasure them. I have some of my mom's quilts and they are priceless to me. Such sweet memories.
What treasures they all are and such a wonderful gift, you completing them and passing on to family members. They are a joyful reminder of your mum and her creative spirit, working with her hands, a gift you also possess. Such love. Thank you Kate for your inspiration. Be well.
Kate how lucky you are to have been left with your Mom’s treasures. To be able to finish them off in her honour and share them in the end with other family members. Love all the quilts and I too really love the string quilt. Great job with the bindings. Thanks for sharing 👍❤️😊
Stitching bindings down is my favorite part of the quilt. The grand finale. I would have loved to have helped you. Your quilts will be an enormous love hug to your family. Thanks for letting us be part of the whole process.
You are such a lovely person, Kate. I'm not a quilter, but watching this series has been really enjoyable. Your family are going to be thrilled with the quilts to remind them of your mother. thank you so much for inviting us to follow along xx
It doesn’t matter what one of your videos I watch or re watch, I always smile and feel So happy! Thank you Kate & my mom has been gone since 2005 and I miss her so much. Not a day goes my that I don’t have a wee bit of a conversation in some way or another. thank you Kate
What a Herculean effort on your part to help your mother finish her unfinished earthly business. These will be such wonderful heirloom gifts for your family - they are absolutely beautiful! Oh, and Rita - 💕
It makes me happy that you are keeping the strip quilt for yourself. Thanks for letting us watch this project from beginning to end with you. Have a blessed March, Kate and Family.
What's it called when one watches one video after another? Ahhh! Binge viewing! Today just seemed like a *Kate-Last-Homely-House day!* Thus, quilting (actually, free-hand quilting) and Kate. That makes for a very satisfying, quiet, intelligent and thoughtful day!
This was so lovely, Kate. It is a wonderful way to honor your mum and spread the joy of her making to your siblings and family. I liked hearing you felt her presence as you completed them, our mums' voices truly live on in our heads! XOX from California
I wish I could see your family’s faces while they receive their quilts but I imagine that to be a very private moment. They are beautiful and full of love. Thank you for sharing this.
So many of my friends say they hate to attach the bindings to their quilts, but I’m like you; I love binding! It means a finished quilt! I just started watching you and look forward to many videos.
What a touching video. The love for your mom shows in your love and care of her work. My mom was a quilter and taught me. I think there's a special bond in mothers and daughters who quilt together. Watching you put the binding on your mom's quilts brought tears to my eyes. So precious.
Oh Kate, I am so glad you are passing them on to family members. When my mother n law passed in 2019 we found a box of quilt tops in her shed. Some of them dated back 100 years. We know that the box came from her mother's house after she had passed. My sister n law kept all the finished quilts from the house and gave all the unfinished quilt tops and those that needed to be repaired to me sense I'm a quilter and she is not. After I finished working on them, I had them long armed and gave one to each of my 6 grandkids. I feel as if I'm passing on a piece of their history to them. I have two more to finish and I'm going to keep them for now. Thank You for sharing your mothers' quilts with us.
These are precious treasures. My husband's grandma left 3 tops quilt to finish. They are almost 100 years. I'm currently quilting the first one by hand. Each of my 3 children will have a family memory of there own.
I’m happy you chose to keep the quilt you did to keep. It was my favorite also and after all the work you did to get all of them finished you certainly deserve to keep your favorite one.
Oh my , your comment about your beloved Mum talking over your shoulder , made me shiver . I had exactly the same after my Mum passed away . I’d watched her for decades when she used to sew daily but never really sewed myself . I inherited her janome machine . I only used it about a year after her loss ,just to make something to pass the time . I opened the carry case and immediately my Mums smell hit me , she had bits of fabric I remembered ,I started to thread the machine , not sure I was doing it correctly , and I heard her , do it like that , don’t do it that way . And when I commenced sewing she urged me on , and still does if I hit something difficult to sew through , Go on Hill she says , and it’s a comfort . hearing you say the same made me tingle and had to comment . How special , she’s on my shoulder urging me on even now , I’m 70 now and love it still . X
I get tears watching this video when you mention your mother. My mother sewed many beautiful things and recently I found unfinished quilts she had worked on. I hope to finish them one day. She taught me a lot about sewing and I miss her still teaching me. Glad I found you, Kate!
I hope your Brothers and their families appreciate the work your Mum and yourself have lovingly put into these quilts so that they remain heirlooms for generations. I imagine your Mum over your shoulder saying "Good job".
You have been such an inspiration to me . I have just about finished my first ever quilt top, and that is thanks to you Kate and your wonderful videos. I am binge watching when I am sewing and I cant tell you how much joy they are bringing. So thank you again Kate and Anna.
Following the journey of these quilt tops has kept many of us sane during these times. Watching the love for your Mum shine in your eyes as you unfolded each one, decided on backing fabric, and stitched away by machine and by hand, has been a blessing. Lucky will be those to whom you gift these treasures.
I’m 100% a topper. The excitement of starting a new quilt top. Choosing fabric and design. The rest is basically the same. Sandwich. Baste. Quilt. Binding. The top is where the action is. 😉
What a wonderful legacy you habe finished for your mum. I liked the part of her commenting over your shoulder about how you finished them. Your family should be pleased.
Yes! "She's always looking over my shoulder, giving an opinion." I lost my Mom a year and a half ago. She left many, many unfinished quilts. So far I have finished 2, have another 2 almost done, and have donated another top to be finished for a cause my mom supported. I have 2 more that have to be finished for the youngest graduating grandchildren. I always hear my Mom when working on them. I feel so much closer to her then.
Lovely to see the all the quilts finished Kate. Your Mum would be so proud of you for finishing them off. What lovely gifts for all the family, the best keepsake ever xx
I have watched every video and especially liked following your mums quilts to completion... they are beautiful as you lovingly finished them. Your family members are sure to love and cherish them. Thank you for sharing them,
*sigh* ... It's so happy - but it's sad. I truly enjoyed this series. Mum's quilts are SO charming. I feel like I got to know her a little bit somehow. Thank you for sharing this sentimental bit of your life (and your Mum) with us Kate. 💗
What a lovely project ! My mother made my wedding dress, 52 years ago, and I like to take it down and see her beautiful sewing skills. It is the most precious thing that I keep because it makes me feel her close and it brings me beautiful memories.
Please make sure that it's stored securely! A friend of mine was heartbroken last winter when she had a plumbing crisis and one of the things she lost was the fully lace wedding dress her mother had made for her in the 1960's!😱 A pipe had been dripping unknown for a long time, rusty water into the built-in wardrobe, staining and moulding everything in it until it gave way one day and floored. She was heartbroken.please keep precious things in waterproof, smoke proof containers! 🕊️❤️
What a beautiful labour of love and such a privilege to be able to watch the process of finishing your mom’s handiwork…thank you for bringing us along, Kate…it’s a little sad that they’re done, but no doubt, the recipients will treasure each one! ☺️
Another wonderful Sunday afternoon spent with Kate and LGS friends. Seeing your Mums quilts are so special. Such a delight to sit with you while you're binding them. I am making chicken soup today as it is fitting for such a cold day in the Northeast. Hugs from Maine. Have a great week all.
That was so lovely Kate. Delighted the quilts are now finished. What a wonderful labour of love it has been. It is only recently it dawned on me that my mothers collection of books was in the collecting and seeing when a new book came out. She passed away in September aged 91 and I used to say that she would never be able to read all her 100s of books if she lived to 100. But like your mum and quilts, it was the joy of collecting the books rather than reading them that my mum enjoyed.
Binding is my fav part of the quilt also, Kate! How fortunate to have quilting in common with your mum and how fortunate your family is to have these lovely hand made items.
Oh Anna! I had no idea I was going to like your quilt quite so much! You are doing such a beautiful job and I’m jealous that Kate is your teacher. Keep up the good work you are doing!
What a fantastic journey to share with us youtube friends, many thanks for allowing us to be part of the process. it has been amazing to see the many shades and pattern blocks that your talented mum and you have created Love your work
Thank you for sharing the last binding stitches on your mum’s quilts with us. Isn’t it wonderful that you feel her presence next to you, still giving opinions and guidance. So lovely.
I have absolutely loved watching the series on your mum's quilts. Just beautiful. She had a good eye for colors and putting those together. Thank you for sharing this with us.
I followed your serie about your mum's quilt among others( while re-binding a quilt I made for my son when he was a toddler and that he gave back to me to repair now that he is closing in on his 40th birthday!) and your comment about knowing that your mum would be okay with you modifying the quilt tops, gave me the nudge I needed to finally take up 2 quilt tops I inherited from my grandmother who died in 1979 and modify them to finally have them see the light of day, providing warmth and comfort to some of her lucky descendants, my own grandchildren. Permission is all I needed! Thanks for making room on your green couch!
Your mother’s quilts are beautiful. What a lovely labor of love completing her work. I’m sure she smiled at you doing this and sending out her love via the quilts to family members. These are truly treasures. Love your videos and your chats.
Kate, when Covid first hit, women were rapidly making masks for hospitals and care homes. I had a last bolt of fabric of my mother's that she had planned to use for a huge tablecloth. Using her sewing tools, and those of her best friend (who had become my stepmother after my mother's death), I was able to make a lot of masks to a pattern preferred by the healthcare professionals. It was so rewarding to be using their fabric and tools on such a worthy cause. They had been gone for such a long time, but were with me and advising me every step of the way, just like you said of your experience with binding your mum's quilts. I think what you did was wonderful and it must be so rewarding for you to distribute these treasures to your family. It's wonderful to see you looking so well. Love to you, your family, and all pets!
Following you doing your mom's quilts encouraged me to finish a quilt that I started some 40 years ago. It's cross-stitch tulips of multiple colors. I had finished all of the cross-stitch but hadn't finished the quilting. Because you took yours up to Scotland to Kat, the long armed quilter, I also took mine to a long arm quilter. It's done. The binding is sewn on but I haven't hand stitched it to the back. That's my next project once I finish knitting my sweater, my son's sweater and his hat. I need to look up the binding stitch for hand stitching once a again. Thank you for being my encouragement. I've been with you for some years now and wouldn't miss a single Podcast. Thank you for being your authentic self and bringing your life to us through TH-cam.
What a beautiful comment Karen. Please share a photo of your finished quilt when you’ve finally done the binding…we’d love to see it! Regards from sunny Australia.
If you can remember how to do a hem stitch, you would use that same stitch to finish the binding after using a sewing machine to apply it. You could check out Just Get it Done with Karen Brown for a tutorial for the whole process of binding a quilt. I would love to see a picture of your quilt. Take care.
That is a real accomplishment. I also enjoy the quiet, meditative activity of sewing down a binding by hand. I have quilts my great-grandmother made (well, mostly tops). The story is that one Christmas she brought them all out and let her grandchildren choose which one they wanted. After my grandmother passed away - she got the completed crazy quilt - the siblings drew lots for that gem. It has eventually made it's way to me. 😊
My cousin recently told me that her mom made a quilt that she never got to finish. My aunt has been gone for 19 years now. I offered to help my cousin finish the quilt so that her kids can have a quilty hug from their grandma.

Hi 👋 how are you doing today?
A true labour of love, Kate, and a little bit of mum to warm each family member. Warm their bodies and warm their hearts. 💕
I'm so glad you are keeping one of your Mum's quilts for yourself❣

I wish I could see your family’s faces while they receive their quilts but I imagine that to be a very private moment. They are beautiful and full of love. Thank you for sharing this.
Dear precious Kate you are a Blessing from your mum to her family for generations to come.💜 So enjoy all your videos Bless you .
Hand binding is always best part of quilting for me😍 Thankyou for finishing all your Mum’s. 🥰🇦🇺
It is a true labor of love mindful of the one who made them and the ones who will receive and cherish them. Your Mom would surely be happy & proud.
So many of my friends say they hate to attach the bindings to their quilts, but I’m like you; I love binding! It means a finished quilt! I just started watching you and look forward to many videos.
Made my day seeing you lovingly work on your mum's quilts. And brilliant that they are going to family. I'm sure they will be treasured.
What a touching video. The love for your mom shows in your love and care of her work. My mom was a quilter and taught me. I think there's a special bond in mothers and daughters who quilt together. Watching you put the binding on your mom's quilts brought tears to my eyes. So precious.
Kate its so lovely to sit and sew while you chat - like sitting with a friend on your long sofa! thank you
Oh Kate, I am so glad you are passing them on to family members.
What a beautiful tribute to Kate's mom! Thank you for this video update.
I very much enjoyed watching you honor your mom by completing her quilts. Beautiful.
Beautiful stack of quilts. A meaningful legacy. Thanks for sharing the process, Kate!!
What a wonderful time I have had watching these videos. Many, many thanks.
Kate, I have enjoyed the journey of your Mums quilts. Thankyou for sharing it. Your Mum would be very proud of what you have done with them
Following the journey of these quilt tops has kept many of us sane during these times.
Thank you for sharing them,
Binding is my favorite part of making a quilt. It’s like framing a picture.
Every quilt is very lovely. I am sure your mum is smiling and proud of the work you did to see them finished.
🤗 The quilts are beautiful Kate, I’m sure who ever receives one will be thrilled! Take care.
Your mums quilts are so beautiful and it's lovely that they are now going to be family heirlooms to hand down.
What a fantastic journey to share with us youtube friends, many thanks for allowing us to be part of the process.
it has been amazing to see the many shades and pattern blocks that your talented mum and you have created
Love your work
Watching this made me miss my mom, who lives 3 hours away. she is 93. Going to ring her now.
Thank you for sharing the last binding stitches on your mum’s quilts with us. Isn’t it wonderful that you feel her presence next to you, still giving opinions and guidance. So lovely.
The quilt project turned out great. Loved the way you finished your Mum’s quilts. Lucky family members who receive one. 👍❤️
How lovely of you to share this Alyson. Thank you, it is vey moving. Sending love, Susan
Kate those of us on The Lime Green Sofa have loved the journey of your mother’s quilts. Thank you for sharing. Be healthy and safe
What a wonderful thing, completing your Mum's quilts. Great that they are going to the family.
@@Westeross I will post a photo, Kate. Thanks for asking.
Wow. I would love to see your quilt. Sounds beautiful.
Yes, please share with us! ❤️
Simply lovely. Thank you for sharing this journey with us, Kate.
Beautiful treasures, your family will love those quilts. Your MoM is smiling down on you.
