"I let you live here for free and I don't even charge you rent." That's SERIOUSLY the best lyrics they could write for their villain song?! At least Chris Pine seemed to be enjoying hamming it up.
So let me get this straight: a benevolent magician king builds a perfect society where every citizen gets the chance to magically enchance it. If their wish won't help the society, the magician king is kind enough to make them forget it after he doesn't grant it. And our hero is the one who wants to destroy this whole civilization built on magic, progress, benevolence, and peace because... her grandpa didn't get his wish? Am I understanding this right?
Well you missed the point quite blatantly. The “perfect” society is to keep the people there. People give their greatest wish to him, in hope of it coming true. Because they think they can’t do it on their own. It’s not just any Wish. But from the very best part of us. The people do not know their memory is literally erased of their wish. And the King tells them he does what’s fair. When really he’s quite dense, picks favorites, and leaves most under the bus. And everyone is dependent entirely on him. It’s really not that hard to figure it out.
Thank you for the Kingdom Hearts comparison, because it really does feel like one of those stories. Read a plot synopsis, but replace “wishes” with “hearts,” and it’s uncannily close. You can even see the point in the story where an Organization member would whisper into the king’s ear, convincing him to really turn bad - because there’s not a good motivation for him to do so otherwise.
I really wish after she was hurt and couldn’t sing, that it was the grandpa that started singing and fulfilled his own wish of inspiring the next gen, then dahlia and friends joining in, then the rest of the town. Idk it felt odd to me that they didn’t do that.
Well, he specifically wanted to inspire others with his music. To be fair, this is a moment everyone loses hope. But Asha remembers we are all made of stars. She basically gave the people the push in the right direction, they needed in that moment. Just like Star gave her a push in the right direction.
The King was willing to teach Asha MAGIC! If he was truly selfish, he would not be having apprentice audition. And Asha only met the King for 5 minutes and she has the gall to ask for a selfish favor, then throws a tantrum when the King refused her. The entire movie, she acts like the King forces the people to give their wish to him. But no, they were all voluntarily moved there, made a living there, enjoy the security and protection there, and chose to partake in the monthly lottery for a chance to have their wish granted. Their choices. The King was just doing his job as a protector. The wish granting is just extra benefit. If Asha doesn’t like it, go away. The people should have already know that most wishes given to the King don’t come true, since they have eyes. They can count the number of people, then count the number of wishes already been granted, and do the math. The entire movie, I felt bad for the King because Asha increasingly pushes him to use forbidden magic to protect his kingdom. Think about it, she didn’t learn anything, didn’t have any character growth, didn’t change anything. Asha could have just learn the King’s magic, then grand the wishes herself if she like. But no, she just made a wish, and it came true. She gets the ability to do magic in the end via the magic wand, without even training like the King did. Not even a classic lesson of “be careful what you wish for.”
You know what the worst thing is? The fact that she destroyed his leadership because "he can't be in charge of granting wishes" (just because he said no to her grandpa's wish) only to be crowned wish granter herself. I swear Asha has to be the absolute worst character anyone's ever made or seen.
I have yet to watch the movie, but... it really took her going into the interview to realize that one wish per month granted with all those people living there meant that some (most) wishes were not being granted? I kinda like the idea that she is the reason that the later villains got their wishes (almost) granted, causing the conflicts and horrors. Though it seems to leave unanswered where the book came from. There COULD be a lesson in the story if she had realized how easy it was to topple the king and his working regime and his measured approach, and how hard it would be to rebuild and deal with all the contradicting wishes and aspirations without him, how some wishes were entirely selfish and harmful to others. How her naivety without listening and learning first, but rushing head in head first and excitedly bumbling along the way was not helpful, no matter how well-meant (and pushed the King over the ledge, apparently). Maybe if the movie had ended with a montage of her and her own apprentices and next generations had to constantly intervene to send chosen heroes on their right path to undo the resulting chaos.... Are we sure that adorable little star is one of the good guys? I've said it before, but the original "When you wish upon a star" lyrics said: "Fate is kind She brings *to those who love* The sweet fulfillment of Their secret longing" In that the titular "wish" was one born out of love and selflessness. And when it wasn't, it was about self-improvement "Fate steps in and sees you through" - not necessarily granting your the wish directly, but giving you strength and endurance, HOPE to work yourself to the finish line (to what you are meant to become anyway-?). "If *your heart* is in your dream no request is too extreme". Love and hope. The original wish was not meant to be the kind of "I want to be the best" or anything that would be harmful to others... If this movie was trying to play on that, then I think Disney forgot its original meaning themselves... If the wishes in the movie had been the kind referred to in the song, then, yes, the story and rebellion would make sense - but it seems the King made a point about how at least some of these wishes were not.
Radical idea: Instead of a movie about a King who turns evil after an eon long reign because one of his subjects questioned him... They should have made a movie about the King being right, but the apprentice not getting it, thinking the King was too strict in his judgement and not grasping the notion of a wish needing to be born out of love and a good heart, (maybe the King gets sick or kidnapped and the apprentice has to step in) going around and granting random wishes they thought sounded nice and fun and useful (in the moment) and being oblivious to the consequences. They crash and burn when the chaos builds up and then make some friends on the way, and learn the real meaning of selflessness and help and hope and love, y'know. They do manage to clean up their mess on their own (by the power of compromise?). ...and you know what? That could be a modern homage to Fantasia's The Sorcerer's Apprentice, too. And it could still be the "prequel" to all Disney movies if the one lesson the apprentice learns on their way, one the King had failed to consider before, was to bring that kind of magic to other realms as well (in good measure) to help behind the curtains to defeat (mislead) villains and support the pure-hearted's wishes.
A review on Disney i saw some where mentioned how Disney likes to make women diverse races, but men are usually white, and now i can’t stop noticing how many white men are in movies with diverse women. Little mermaids dad is white, the prince is white, but his mom is black, king magnifico is … a color, of the seven dwarves only 1 is not white while of the women only 1 is white
My problem with this movie is the villain seems absolutely correct. Every time I watched the trailer, I just couldn’t see how the villain was the villain. I was hoping they could do a cool twist where he turns out to not be a villain but that sadly was not the case Also looking at the concept art of this movie, it’s absolutely insane how much they ruined this movie. They had so many cool ideas(Queen also being evil and the original star boy being some of the ones I wish happened).
He was absolutely correct, the guy literally did nothing wrong or evil through the entire movie. I'm puzzled and a little disturbed they threw him in the dungeons like he did something horrible when... he did nothing at all. What in the world happened in that movie
And like the Pixar theory, it will just remain speculation. Chris Buck refused to confirm anything about supposed origin stories and interconnections of different movies as canon. Magnifico is not the magic mirror (he is not even in a mirror, he is in the crystal of his staff and it does not even look like the Wicked Queen's wall mirror), Asha is not Cinderella's fairy godmother, Bambi, Thumper, Meeko and Peter Pan are not the same characters as those from their movies, the staff and magic book were not later found by Maleficent etc etc etc. Just like Belle's cameo does not mean that Belle lived in Paris 200 years before her own movie and Boo did not become the witch in Brave. Random thoughts are fine for fanfic but should not be mistaken for fact in the movies' continuity. Some fans tried to connect Tarzan, Little Mermaid and Frozen in one timeline and the theory was torn to pieces when Frozen 2 was released. Plus, Disney has countless separate continuities for characters in comics by different authors, TV series such as Once Upon a Studio, franchises such as Descendants and animated actor concepts such as Who Framed Roger Rabbit and House of Mouse. I adore Wish as a movie but no new writers can impose their own version of origin stories on classics that have endured the test of time and Disney knows it, which is why they do not comment further on those Easter Eggs.
This movie was very weird bc i didnt think magnifico was a bad guy. Literally he tells you i take your wish. You lose it. Maybe youll get it back. All the terms and agreements are right there. Heck, 'Once Upon a Studio' can't even save this film from exploding in Disney's face more than 'Strange World'. Plus, the merch for 'WISH' is so much better than what we got for 'Strange World'.

I give it a low six cause of Chris Pine and the Easter eggs but it was a mess it needed a ton of tweaking. I do wish they stuck to the original idea of Star being a star boy and Amaya being evil
The first mixed princess with singles (braids) and they fuck it up 😭 this makes me so fucking sad cause i was happy theres a character that FINALLY looks like me cause tiana was the closest which was great but she wasnt mixed. Also i feel like encanto was our peak with musicals from Disney that arent remakes tbh
I hate that I've been thinking about this movie since it came out, but like in how it had so much missed potential. Like you were saying, it sucks that their first afrolatina princess got such a bad movie, not to mention this is going to make them think that new stories and diverse leads, and not the exec meddling, are the problem (so here's to a decade of sequels :/) but super great overview! I wish I had watched this before I saw wish, but here we are lol.
Did they steal all of this from the hall of prophecies in Harry Potter 😂 (but for real I wish they’d given us the Starboy Romance and the Villain couple)
I hear everyone talking about the point that the animation is less-than, and the writing is absolutely deplorable- the A.I. written songs doesn’t help-that’s a valid criticism but I think they’re missing the mark with what the movie is actually about. Given some various looks, it makes sense that people are saying this movie is intended to be an allegory for God, and people. (Not only is it incorrect by even the Bible’s standards, but it’s actually worse than that…) I can really hear someone’s voice through this movie, like a criticism someone behind the scenes may have. Not to mention all of the references and depictions of and to satanic imagery (literally, not just saying that) and just plain out anti-God sentiment. Not that many people are talking about it- frankly I think most people aren’t even knowledgeable in that. Most people just write things off as religious people just being salty or something, but I’ve listened to some Christians perspectives, and a lot of them are spot on. There is so much more to this movie, and the fact that it is all intentional makes it worse-I feel bad for parents who don’t know that they’re showing their children. I think it’s time people wake up and start choosing to see that Disney is actually not all sunshine and unicorns.. I mean it’s princesses and magic* and even goats. Promoting selfishness under the guise of freedom or growing up aren’t really good traits to have kids look up to. And there’s something I touch on later, regarding why it’s rather difficult to make a clear point on this movie other than why “it’s just bad.” Anyhow, I do believe the management of the movie quality wise was heavily mishandled, and that might have to do with why the movie’s intentions are so unclear- why some may not think Magnifico is the bad guy, and other things. This movie is so confusing on top of that, and I would love to hear from the team who worked on this, or at least who made all the decisions. I wonder if they mention their intentions.
Gotta say this movie sounds trash and i thought i was gonna leave without anything of value from this video. Until i found out mickey is becoming public domain soon. Cant wait for the mickey mouse horror movie lmao
7:50 I feel like I'm losing my mind. When did everyone decide Europeans are Latino? Cuz they're not. Latino means Latinoamericano. No part of fake a Mediterranean country is Latino
That this king is the man in the mirror there were so much Easter eggs I think so many people bypassed it, and then not really watched the movie. I think there were so much stuff in there. I’d love this movie.
I love Wish! Valentino is my favorite character because he's adorable and a little brat! I love how Alan Tudyk lends his voice to the most cutest character in Disney history. The fact that this original movie is the origin story of the Disney anthem "When You Wish Upon A Star" is a beautiful way to celebrate 100 years of Disney. But overall, Valentino is the cutest little angel Disney had given us! God bless Alan Tudyk! He is a star!
I hate how much hate this movie is getting... for me it was really important and i cried. Not every movie is for everyone... i think the movie was great and Asha is great and very different than others, truly the only self less princess...she gets a we're going to war song, she gets to take down a king. My only criticism is its too short, i wanted it to be fleshed out more but it was good to me and i love it
Take down a king that’s not even freaking evil but supposedly a villain, basically every female is colored and every male is white, songs and characters are mediocre period. I hate how blind people are

Selfless? She got close to the king just to ask him for a favor and when he said no she overthrew his kingdom and tortured him. Literally every bad thing that happens is because of her and her selfishness.
Almost this entire video explanation misses the mark on so much and the hilarious part is that it’s four months old so it’s should at the very least be up to date on why Disney is ACTUALLY going under. I’ll give you a hint to start… Snow Woke doesn’t have dwarves anymore and traded success for an idiot actress that has most recently been spanked by the corporation and the media 😂
Afro latina????? Seriously??? Please do your research. The story is based in the Iberian peninsula which is modern day Spain , when Spain was moorish and would have been called al-Andalus , it depicts medical Spain and the Christian/Muslim and Jewish cultures
That comes from the filmmakers themselves and the press notes. Might want to listen to the voice actress Ariana talk about it wearemitu.com/wearemitu/entertainment/disney-wish-ariana-debose-trailer/
People travel to Rosas. The first song of the movie literally explains that people travel to Rosas via boat. Magnifico built Rosas and not sure how old he is but probably only out 3 generations at most or natural born Rosasians

I don’t get is when he does say about most of these wishes don’t get granted, but she knew that going in
Mickie is about to show his true colours it seems.
You do realize that Mickey is also a trademark and those don't expire and also it is only mickey from steam boat willy that is entering the public domain
Every night a movie night! I caught that joke.
Such a disappointing film. Wished it was a lot better than it was
Is John the bear Little John? From Robin Hood?
Ty for saving me from watching wish
Those AR glasses are like 600$
I AM A FULLY ON DISNEY FAN. And I love the Pixar theory so having a Disney Disney timeline.😙 Chefs kiss.
Did they steal all of this from the hall of prophecies in Harry Potter 😂 (but for real I wish they’d given us the Starboy Romance and the Villain couple)
AI made the whole movie. It felt like a statement about Jesus Christ stealing prayers but I think that’s because I grew up in the Christian church
(Not only is it incorrect by even the Bible’s standards, but it’s actually worse than that…)
I can really hear someone’s voice through this movie, like a criticism someone behind the scenes may have.
And there’s something I touch on later, regarding why it’s rather difficult to make a clear point on this movie other than why “it’s just bad.”
Anyhow, I do believe the management of the movie quality wise was heavily mishandled, and that might have to do with why the movie’s intentions are so unclear- why some may not think Magnifico is the bad guy, and other things. This movie is so confusing on top of that, and I would love to hear from the team who worked on this, or at least who made all the decisions. I wonder if they mention their intentions.
i enjoyed Wish
Bros advertising these Wall-E ass glasses
Gotta say this movie sounds trash and i thought i was gonna leave without anything of value from this video. Until i found out mickey is becoming public domain soon. Cant wait for the mickey mouse horror movie lmao
1:02 Mulan x Asha x Snow White
DISNEY IS GONNA DO WHAT!? TO MICKY! NO NO NOOOOO!!! DISNEY YOUR GOING TO FAR!! 😭
I liked it as a life long Disney fan. I didn't love it. It could have been better BUT it could have been way way worse.
Now I see why everyone was up in arms and calling this movie super woke, it’s like they turned the culture war into a Disney movie.
He is a star!
she’s created free will
I hate how much hate this movie is getting... for me it was really important and i cried.
I hate how blind people are
The King was willing to teach Asha MAGIC! She just made a wish, and it came true. Not even a classic lesson of “be careful what you wish for.”
Selfless? She got close to the king just to ask him for a favor and when he said no she overthrew his kingdom and tortured him. Literally every bad thing that happens is because of her and her selfishness.
This movie was forgettable. I was so disappointed ☹️
Almost this entire video explanation misses the mark on so much and the hilarious part is that it’s four months old so it’s should at the very least be up to date on why Disney is ACTUALLY going under. I’ll give you a hint to start… Snow Woke doesn’t have dwarves anymore and traded success for an idiot actress that has most recently been spanked by the corporation and the media 😂
well i'm just dissapointed with this movie. it feels souless.
Might want to listen to the voice actress Ariana talk about it

People travel to Rosas. The first song of the movie literally explains that people travel to Rosas via boat. Magnifico built Rosas and not sure how old he is but probably only out 3 generations at most or natural born Rosasians
@@JClucky13 the official Walt Disney website explains the Iberian based theme not Afro Latina
