Yeah the Chinese word for witch 巫婆 Wu Puo. Is such a distinctly western concept that even calling her one makes the character stick out like a sore thumb. Should have made her a spirit of a demon if the production team actually did any damn research.
Chinese as well and I thought it was okay. I wish they made the movie like actually realistic and accurate, but it's Disney and we need to have some type of magic in it. Honestly though, I thought the idea of the witch was cool, but maybe that's just me having a little crush on her 🤣. My father on the other hand hated the movie and he kept pointing out all of the inaccuracies that the movie had (which is A LOT) and he thought that the movie was to American which I agree.
@@krystallights1325 I honestly liked the witch character too and was probably one of the more interesting characters in the movie. It's just unsatisfying when they didn't really expand the character, give us any of the witches motivations that made sense. If anything it should have been revealed that the Khan was being controlled by the witch all along and Mulan would have to face this powerful enemy. I also don't think people really take issues with the fact that the movie wasn't accurate, it just that disney "CLAIMED" they wanted to be historically accurate and they failed to deliver a fantasy story nor a historical story.
Two things disappointed me: the exposition and the chi as a superpower. In the beginning of 1998's Mulan Shan Yu is on the Great Wall and the poor solider we all know is going to die bravely lights the warning flame and says, "Now all of China knows your here." To which, Shan Yu responds, "Good". Instant chills. That strong dialogue combined with the atmosphere could have been present for the witch (Xianniang) or Bori Khan attacking the outpost. There were a lot of missed opportunities throughout the film to develop characters. Instead, Mulan's dad is providing exposition over what should have been pivotal emotional scenes. The structure and framework were all there with no payoff.
@@ilovepossumsforever3809 Yes! Perfect example of show don't tell. We all know what is going to happen but they never outright say to kill one of the messengers. 2020 Mulan would have said it directly.
And this has been the case for pretty much all their live actions, so far. I'm not even interested in Disney, anymore, and try to support it as little as possible, even though Disney has a stake in EVERYTHING... and this review pointed out exactly why. Capitalism has killed everything; money is king and few companies have a soul, anymore. Try to buy things from small businesses if you can.
You know, it's hard for me: Normally, i would seperate the actual Movie 'Mulan' from the Real Life. Look at them seperately. But this... THIS is just an extreme case and i dont know how to do it here. All this is so insane. The Movie is full of Cringe, Fake-Feminism and Plot Holes - yet, the Real Life has way crazier problems and I'm starting to think China is so off-track from the rest of humanity that some Nation should - no kidding - invade China and take over, so the Supression ends... Or something like this! I know this normally isnt right, but... i believe there is a 'Point' where such a thing is justified. Of course this point is by no means easy to reach, but... it's possible to reach, you know? Oh, i don't know.
it felt like there was no hardship for Mulan in the live action. She didn’t train and practice secretly during the night, they didn’t shame her when they found out she was a female. Instead, there was the problem of ‘chi’ and the effortless superhero-like fighting and the “le gasp she’s a girl?! now begone i dont wanna see your face”. Not to mention the addition of the younger sister so theres less pressure for Mulan to marry for the family.
They shouldn't have made any live action remakes; they should have just reanimated them and, maybe, modernized them a bit instead of these turds they keep pushing out. And I feel bad saying that about this movie, but the good about it is too overshadowed by the bad.
They really went out of their way to make it as difficult for themselves as possible instead of just hiring ONE Chinese person who understood the history & culture. Smh
They do this with pretty much ANY show or movie or book about any culture other than white, unfortunately. This is why so much of PoC media still suffers from bad representation, sometimes to the point of being completely offensive.
I don't know if this is because I haven't seen a Disney movie in a while, but a lot of the editing seems off. Like unnecessary zoom-ins, a scene with a second too long which makes it cringey, not to mention the oddly placed remarks. I don't know how to feel honestly 😂
It is Western style quick editing for what should be a Chinese action film. To properly show off the action you need to actually have a long shots, so you can see all the choreography in the fights and properly appreciate them. And it honestly did look like a number of the fights actually were okay, just they were murdered by the quick jumps.
@@RenaDeles Huh, so that's why it felt off. I was thinking there where so many pointless shots that took too long instead of progressing the story. Some scenes where just plain corny.
I can't say I understand why people didn't like the haircutting scene... as a Chinese American, I never saw that scene as her cutting her hair to look more masculine. I saw it as her feeling that what she was about to do would dishonor her family, so she was cutting herself out of it. There's a history of Asians cutting their hair when they are forced to leave home (a la Prince Ashitaka in Princess Mononoke, which I know is Japanese, but the root of that exists across many Asian cultures, Chinese included.).
@@dontbemean3942 thats not the point. People think it’s okay to mix and match asian cultures when writing stories because “they’re all the same”. And that’s not okay.
@@dontbemean3942 that's not celebration. It's called monolith, and its one-size-fits-all thing may sound good, but it's actually bad to the point of insulting. As a Filipino-Chinese, having every single Asian country be smushed into one cultural monolith is an insult to the richness of all our cultures. Our cultures are so similar and yet so different that there's no way to mush it all into one and make it look recognizable to us. There's nothing wrong with comparing and differentiating. If anything, being considered "all the same" is insulting to us.
Giving Mulan a sister actively makes the movie worse though. The fact that mulan’s an only child and that all her family’s honor rests on her is a huge part of her character
Just a few bones to pick with their pathetic attempts to be "accurate": 1) Mulan was from Northern Wei. North. She shouldn't be living in a tulou. Those are Hakka buildings. Hakka people live in the South. Like Shanghai. 2) They used the WRONG phoenix myth. Their cringeshot "rise like a phoenix" visual metaphor doesn't work with the Chinese phoenix because the _fenghuang_ has little to do with "rising" or rebirth. It's a symbol of prosperity, happiness, and imperial femininity. The "wife" of the dragon. 3) Their tactics are shit. Just saying. 4) "Qi" doesnt fucking work that way. Even in its most fantastic depictions. Qi is breathing. It's something you supposedly cultivate to grant you superior control over your body and in wuxia films to such an extent that it's borderline magic. That said, it's not something you can just be born with. You cultivate it. You train to get better at using qi to reinforce your physicality. 5) The costumes are an anachronistic mess. Styles from different time periods and different bloody DYNASTIES interact with each other. There are also rules regarding the use of color and symbols for different social classes and this movie doesn't care to learn about them.
Hakka people live way south than Shanghai, mainly around Guangdong province, e.g Guangzhou. And the Hakka buildings were not being built until the 16th century ish, hilariously far from Mulan's time. The original movie had some problems with historical accuracy but I have no idea what they were thinking when they made this one :/
@@YiningDai "it looks chinese therefore it's culturally correct" is probably what they're thinking. seriously, I only read some Chinese novels but hell I know the shittiest emperor won't do the shitty dumbass thing the emperor in this movie did. the whole idea of Chi only belongs to boys is the same thing as saying blood only belongs to boys, they seriously thought mixing in some Chinese word can make the movie culturally correct huh.
"Chi" just means "air" in Chinese and it's mostly a way for martial artists to regulate their breathing while fighting, but c'mon superpowers? You might feel fly, but you ain't flying cuz your breathing hit a bit different
Well sometimes chi is used as like borderline magic, and if you REALLLYYYY stretch it, then it kinda works for this movie? But the main aspect is; chi needs to be trained. That’s always how it works and you aren’t just born with op chi. It’s more like energy flowing through the body. Also the whole “chi isn’t for girls” is like saying “girls should breathe” or some shit like that.
The original legend and movie had Mulan as a real person who went through trials and tribulations and overcame them through her own determination and commitment to her honour and country. The 2020 movie had Mulan as a woman with superpowers who's special because she was born that way, not because of what she did.
I had sooo many issues with the movie. The biggest thing was that they took all the times when she was smart, clever and hard working to achieve her goals and were like, “...magic.”
I’m a little worried that Disney corp might use the failure of Mulan as an excuse to not venture into POC leads and cultural stories, instead of just doing their research and making better movies.
I never thought of that! Damn you Disney but I doubt it, there would be backlash for sure. I know they'd bend over for the sake of $$$. That's one of the reason why they pandered to China because of the big market share there. Also considering how China's operations are back into full gear, people moving freely and all.
I think the issues is that the movie industry's have forgotten to develop characters who happen to be non white. They focus so much on race, gender that they forget to develop the character. I mean look at finn in star wars i was looking forward to his character being developed but actually he was brought in so that Disney could tick a checklist of just being a black character. So this mulan had to have superpowers because for some reason women cannot be allowed to be weak anymore but already has powers that they have to hide from men.
What’s crazy is they copied that scene from Wonder women when Diana about to go into no mans land but in that particular scene and movie its better directed, has better build up, and is actually earned within the character which doesn’t come off as a total cringe fest like in Mulan lol.
Personally, I found Shan Yu's motivation of being an incredibly prideful warrior and seeing the great wall as an epic challenge from the emperor so much more interesting than Bori Khan's revenge over dead dad angle.
Shan Yu was just a fantastic character all around he wasn't just a stereotype that could be summed up in one line from Inigo Montoya. He had intimidation, charisma, and intelligence. His army didn't end up being painted as incompetent by dropping an avalanche on themselves, instead, they were overcome by Mulan's ingenuity and quick thinking. More than that, at the end he simply wanted the Emperor to acknowledge his victory, which really helps characterize him in a way we just didn't get with Bori Khan.
@@danielhounshell2526 totally agree, Shang Yu is such an underrated villain, he is way more seious than most villains and yet, he is still charismatic and competent.
The whole film was a flop once the Chinese Communist Party put their hands on it. Not to mention Disney just doesn't give a crap anymore as long as it makes money. It was such a waste of talent having Donnie Yen and not showing how awesome he is lol!
It's funny because they actually lost money here, nearly 3/4ths of that 200million. And the money made was just low in general compared to their other live action films. Their running out of films to milk and it shows, this crap is finally starting to bite them in the ass and they do not care.
The most hilarious part is that they spent part of that 200 million hiring a white costume and set designer team who went on a field trip through museums in EUROPE (and a few weeks in China) so that they could get ideas / inspiration 💀💀
The producers at Disney do not care about culture or feminism for that matter. They cater to a very small (but loud) minority of SJW's that think progression is about giving women superpowers and showing different races on screen, without having them actually do anything meaningful. Its funny that in 1979 we had Alien, which showcased a naturally strong woman, but in 2020 you can't be strong woman unless you were born with special powers...
Disney in the '90s, just saved from the verge of bankruptcy: so, we're making a movie in Africa, send our best artists to study African nature in detail, get immersed in it Disney in the new '20s, one the biggest entertainment conglomerate in the world: so, we're making a movie in China, send a couple of people to European museums and see a couple of dresses
But at the same time they should get to the core of *why* people loved it. Take The new Lion King movie, is supposedly a frame by frame copy of the animated one, but lacks the heart and the emotions that made it great.
But you have to admit coco was more authentic even down to its cast than the book of life not to mention way better plot Ex the architecture found in the book of life is something you’ll find in Spain not Mexico.
That moment when the animated series that has ghosts and a talking dragon is more grounded in its themes, character actions, power level and relationships than the live action remake that claims to be closer to reality.

Live-Action Mulan sucked so much that I slept almost through the whole entire movie. They should of gone with the same story line and the same characters and the exact same plot as the animated movie. Just sayin....
As much as that would have been better, I think ppl would have still complained about it, and I think a good reason why that is is because it’s nearly impossible to replicate the charm of Animation. See in an animated movie the director has FULL liberty of the characters moves, line delivery, expression, even the world they live in. So it’s pretty clear this new era of Disney is flawed at its base, it’ll never be possible to replicate what their classic were. Period.
@@fabiofuoco maybe not necessarily replicate but it should have charm. Aladdin and beauty and the beast are both recent live action adaptations and with whatever faults they might have they did the original justice. With Mulan they tried so hard to please everybody and be "different" that they ended up with a mediocre product. Personally the moment I heard they cancelled General Shan and changed Mushu i knew we were headed for disaster
I agree with you and they could of added a bit more to it maybe how the mom and dad are coping at home worrying about Mulan hoping she is okayy and the ancestors talk about how they wonder if Mulan is saved by the great dragon yet ect... just added a bit more to than before and maybe made a few more things accurate and the woman that voiced Mualn would of been a better option to play her! Or maybe she be the mom
Surprisingly enough, I enjoyed Mulan 2 because I got so attached to Yao & co. in the first movie. It made me happy that they did eventually find girls worth fighting for. I'd choose this movie anytime over the live action disaster.
Fun fact about her: She's also known for being expressionless, just because she always want to look pretty. She should be a model instead if she doesn't like to do expressions.
The special effects where do weird! And than she is like spider man and jumps around like crazy but struggles to balance on this construction on the end. I was pretty disappointed 😔 the best where the Instagram shots of things every now and then.
the live-action Mulan tried to give her strong power (Chi) at the beginning, so she don't have to struggle through all the practice or "physical disadvantage"......the animated film have done it so well, audiences can easily "stand beside her" and watch her fight animated version is not cultural correct all the way, but the changes and the adaptations fit the aesthetics so they're well-done btw thank you for using the Taiwan(ROC) flag!!!!
10:23 oh yeah, they do Mulan adaptations all the time. A classmate of mine told me of one where Mulan almost married a princess. I think they become allies, I have to check
Please watch jon solo's channel. He explain Aladdin and why it was actually a chinese story that has an Egyptian like setting. In short, it was originally a chinese story.
Aryen Ganesh they don’t seem to understand the difference between a strong female character and a strong character who happens to be female. Give me the second one every time.
They’re trying to have this feminism trend in Hollywood/ Disney but they’re completely missing the mark and dare I say making it worse in so many ways.
Changing Mulan to a Chosen One story instead of a regular woman who works hard to save her family is a major theme change and I didn't like it.

Then I wonder what she things about Conquering the Demons.
How many me does it take to deliver a message

Chills for me
@@ilovepossumsforever3809 Yes! Perfect example of show don't tell. We all know what is going to happen but they never outright say to kill one of the messengers. 2020 Mulan would have said it directly.

So what hollywood usually does?
I'm joking (kind of), but yeah, I'm just gonna wait this out. I'll be an old crone by then, but it'll be over.
ahh capitalism :)
For the love of goodness, use actual words. It's "people".
it felt like there was no hardship for Mulan in the live action.
Making her train was empowering... The pole scene was so important and they just gave her chi... Annoying!!
miss the "dishonor on your cow"
The animated version of Mulan was so iconic and did not deserve this atrocity
They shouldn't have made any live action remakes; they should have just reanimated them and, maybe, modernized them a bit instead of these turds they keep pushing out. And I feel bad saying that about this movie, but the good about it is too overshadowed by the bad.
They really went out of their way to make it as difficult for themselves as possible instead of just hiring ONE Chinese person who understood the history & culture. Smh
AND THE PERSON WHO SANG REFLECTION WAS WHITE

Yeah the western editing doesn't fit the Chinese action film.
Really, at least they can do good in terms of cinematography.
@@RenaDeles too bad they didnt get a director who specialises in fighting scenes
@@RenaDeles Huh, so that's why it felt off. I was thinking there where so many pointless shots that took too long instead of progressing the story. Some scenes where just plain corny.
I felt like I was watching a Bollywood movie
I can't say I understand why people didn't like the haircutting scene... as a Chinese American, I never saw that scene as her cutting her hair to look more masculine. I saw it as her feeling that what she was about to do would dishonor her family, so she was cutting herself out of it. There's a history of Asians cutting their hair when they are forced to leave home (a la Prince Ashitaka in Princess Mononoke, which I know is Japanese, but the root of that exists across many Asian cultures, Chinese included.).
I think people dislike it becado is more of a japanese tradition than a chinesse one
@@despinasgarden.4100 Not true. Google "cutting hair in ancient china" It's super common in Chinese culture.
You do know most asian cultures share similarities in culture beliefs and morals ... maybe try not to separate each other or compare but celebrate ☺️
Just a few bones to pick with their pathetic attempts to be "accurate":
1) Mulan was from Northern Wei.
They clearly should've hired you instead whoever the heck they decided to overpay
Thank you for taking the time to teach us so much in this comment.
Thanks for the info but now that i know those things, it makes the movie look even worse.
"Chi" just means "air" in Chinese and it's mostly a way for martial artists to regulate their breathing while fighting, but c'mon superpowers?
You might feel fly, but you ain't flying cuz your breathing hit a bit different
It's used in acupuncture & Chinese medicine as well. But it's not like OMG super power.
@@wwaxwork it's like the director watched Iroh's "firebending comes from the breath" speech in Avatar and said "this shit real"
idk but it means something like energy flow in other Asian countries? It's definitely been given a new meaning or it's actually a different concept

Must every single thing in Disney have magic! 🙄

I didn't even think about this and the dread literally gave me goosebumps.
So they are holding us hostage: like this crappy movie or no more poc leads?
no. this should teach them to make better movies instead of kissing China's ass

How do you get a $200 million dollar budget and not get ONE Chinese person that studied Chineses history and knows about Hua Mulan
Anyone else thought her name was fa mulan
Disney in the '90s, just saved from the verge of bankruptcy: so, we're making a movie in Africa, send our best artists to study African nature in detail, get immersed in it
Disney in the new '20s, one the biggest entertainment conglomerate in the world: so, we're making a movie in China, send a couple of people to European museums and see a couple of dresses

As much as that would have been better, I think ppl would have still complained about it, and I think a good reason why that is is because it’s nearly impossible to replicate the charm of Animation.
