I was a union man for 31 years. I did my job and the union got us a fair raise and benifits. We were treated with respect. The company could not fire you for not liking you. There has to be a reason, Stealing, to many days off work over your sick time.I have seen supervisors just get fired because they wanted to replace that person. Yes it is a working labor job but not a white shirt job where you might not know if your job is there the next day..When you have a mortgage, wife, kids depending on you The best i would say is a union job.

Unions have a wide range of power and administrative structures but one thing everyone should understand is if you join a union- you should get involved. You have the legal right to request financial statements, to run for president or other officer positions in the unions; you should attend general memberships meetings, join a committee, hold your local, national or international union accountable. If you dont have time, you should organize with your co-workers and elect a dedicated, hardworking co-workers that you all respect to be your shop steward or delegate to general membership meetings. Identify issues affecting everyone so when negotiations come, you have a list of priorities to show your leadership- not them begging you to fill out a bargaining survey. The fact is a union is a member tun organization that can hire lawyers, business agents but ultimately youre the expert in your job, and you should be part of the bargaining team. It’s should be clear you’re there yo collaborate with your employers- that means finding ways to save money for the company or government that can in turn help you negotiate for higher wages. Like he said, a company or even govebrmebt has a budget .. and you have to understand what that budget is in order to negotiate for higher wages or benefits.

I think it helps in the public sector. I've worked as a mechanical Laborer in a commuter railroad run by local government. Basically we already got great benefits/retirement but our pay was much below comparable jobs at other transit agencies. We were able to negotiate for better pay and cost of living raises, and not much else. I was promoted to another job which is non-union now - same district and I make a little more, receive cost-of-living raises occasionally and probably have a better working relationship with management than when I was union. In this particular job there is only 2 of us, and there really isn't any benefit to unionizing. To me it makes more sense when you're a part of a larger group of employees.

@@Kyle-pj2vc you're right. It got us a pay increase and then the union reps were non-existent. Government employees can now opt-out of union membership so that's what some of them are doing now.

@@garretth.1920 The public sector unions is holding the local governments and federal government hostage for money essentially which the public pays for. Even the most progressive democrats in history such as FDR realized that private unions were okay but public unions are terrible and undemocratic.
No one gives a shit about your pay increase, the principal for doing that to any government is wrong. The top unions in this country are for people making modest wages in the 50 to 100K range. Those people don't need the unions, if anybody needs the unions it's very low wage workers. However when I see the middle class using unions as a bargaining tool to extort companies, you're a shitty human.

    • @jetetarro
      @jetetarro 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@garretth.1920 Unfortunately, the union people in your job didn’t educate you on what a union should be and how it operates. If you just think it’s pay for service- then, at the minimum, you should request monthly financial statements, any minutes at meetings for general memberships and board meetings. But most people dont even do that. A union should be a member tun organization. Members should go to the general membership meetings, be in committees, or run for office. Request and understand financial documents. If you’re paying dues or any type of money for any association or unions- if you dont get involved- it’s on you.

I don't know of any union that pays members full pay when on strike

I’ve worked union (teamsters) for a while... hated it! My father worked union (shipyards) for decades. Every strike you can make a few bucks on the picket, OR they may try to get you on the “extra board” in a sister assignment. Dad would work the longshoremens. But it was always lean on a strike. I had to wait an extra 6mo for my first car when I was 16. Dad was on strike. I handed mom my car fund at week 5 when money went scarce. They paid me back but it took a while....yeah never heard of a union paying wages on a strike.

Best thing to do is read the contract that the union has with the company you're looking to work for and decide if you like it. The contract dictates everything, pay, vacation time, benefits, retirement, disciplinary action procedures limits, you name it. Contracts very a lot, some are strong and others are a joke. I've been a union engineer for 16 years and counting and I can't stress enough, read and know your contract. If you work in a good paying shop and it's union, you'd be better served join the union, otherwise you're throwing away benefits the company must pay the members. Justin could better elaborate how you may dictate your terms of employment at a non union shop as an automotive mechanic, if you really know your shit and have made a name for yourself you can write your own paycheck in automotive, my wife's uncle with 50yrs plus experience has written his own ticket like that. I envy you automotive guys for that, I'm an edifice engineer by trade, electrical, HVAC, steam boilers, welding, plumbing, blueprint reading, kitchen equipment, kind of fix all fuck all stuff. I'm stuck with hospitals, hotels, big buildings if I want to work for an employer.

  • @lucky15driver

I'm a Union Firefighter and have been one for 20 years. The main purpose for us is working conditions. We have collective bargaining, where we have the Union which represents the firefighters and the municipal government we meet and negotiate wages and benefits and have a mutual agreement called a contract that normally lasts for a few years. The contract is binding and cannot be altered during the contract time frame, unless both sides have agreed to. There have been times where we have had the city attempt a massive over reach and violate the contract, or a inconsistent discipline not aligned with past practices. During those times the Union has saved jobs. At other times I have seen the Union be its own worst enemy and loose a benefit due to an offer not being totally our way due to a few stubborn individuals. On a whole I recommend being in a Union. One last thing is we are not allowed to go on strike per civil service law however we can picket, post billboards, do news interviews, and partition citizens for support during the disagreement however, we will not walk off the job.

My full-time job is not union, and I wouldn't want it to be ever. I'd rather negotiate my own salary and benefits, and have opportunity to move up based on merit. Is it always "fair"? No, but I continually go to school, get certifications, etc. to make myself valuable to my current employer, or the next employer if needed. I also work a part-time gig that is unionized, and it's fine as a part-time gig, but I would not want to deal with such in my full-time career. In my experience, the union seems to uplift those who don't want to work very hard, and hold back those with work ethic and some ambition. I can see where at one time unions protected workers from exploitation, and now I just think union big wigs get wealthy off the union member dues, and the union does nothing for those of us on the job.

Wow look at that myopic viewpoint!
So let’s ask a few questions here...
Did the United autos workers union unleash a slate of garbage automobiles during the 1970s?
Were unions champions of the AMC gremlin?
Were unions champions of the AMC pacer?
Were unions champions of the Ford Maverick?
Were unions champions of the Ford Pinto?
Were unions champions of the Ford Mustang II?
Were unions champions of the Chevrolet Vega?
... and the list could go on and on and on of really pissed poorly designed automobiles that didn’t innervate with the times.
      How about in the 80s?
Did the unions tell GM to put faulty seatbelts in their automobiles?
Did union workers want massive recalls throughout their product line due to poor design? Remember that when 1% of the American public worked for GM That lion share of GM employees (union workers) owned GM cars, so you’re saying that their families wanted to drive around in crappy unsafe and poorly designed automobiles?
      How about in the 90s?
Was it a union marketing plan to rely on X-Files to carry Oldsmobile marketing department?
Did the United auto workers union support NAFTA or normalizing trade with China?
When you’re ready to get off your daddy‘s knee and have a conversation with the big boys let me know.

You’ve provided a strong case argument. One that could also be seen myopic. Unions serve a purpose, no doubt. That doesn’t mean that they all hold value. This is a very dependent and multivariable topic. Unions aren’t everyone’s savior. Not all of them are/we’re supported by the mafia. We can agree to disagree. There’s no winning for either one of us.

You can tie the collapse of the middle class directly to the percentage of Americans who are not in unions.
If you want me to list the philanthropic nature of Henry Ford (brilliant entrepreneur who also believed in eugenics) versus Al Capone (terribly flawed humanitarian) I’ll be more than happy to do that for you.
Henry Ford opened trade schools and then wrote them off on his taxes. You know, the same kind of trade schools that would then produce mechanics that could work on his floor. Some of that evil socialism but in America, socialism is okay as long as it’s for the wealthy not for regular people?
Al Capone gave the schools of Chicago milk so the children were less likely to develop rickets.
Henry Ford opened up libraries on college and university campuses so that he could write off on his taxes and have his name on them. More evil corporate Socialism and a vanity project all rolled into one.
Al Capone opened up soup kitchens all over Chicago to make sure people didn’t starve to death during the Great Depression.
Do you want to go down this rabbit hole too?

      How old are you?
The US in 2008 gave an over $80 billion bail out To the US automotive industry.
In 2013 Chrysler and jeep were still owed by Diamler but how about you roll over to the Fiat dealership and asked to pick up a
      AMC?
      Eagle?
      Plymouth?

      Oldsmobile?
      GEO?
      SAAB?
      Pontiac?
      Saturn?
      Hummer?
Go to your local Ford dealership and asked to pick up a
      Mercury?
Ask them if they still own Volvo?
After 2020 Ford will only be manufacturing trucks, SUVs and mustangs.
Sorry to break it to you but the collapse of the US auto industry has been taking place for a lot longer then post 2013.
