    I got accepted into the apprenticeship last 2 weeks ago, I started last Wed and now I'm almost halfway through bootcamp. I'm excited since I'm 32 and I wasn't really able to attend college but I don't mind a whole lot of reading and learning. Wish me luck ladies and gents!

      @@Nick.CampbellMusic Hey man. 👋 The trade is very hectic depending on where you get sent out. If you've never worked construction it's a bit overwhelming but the more you ask questions and keep busy you'll be good. Now, in order to become a member apprentice takes some time depending on how many applications are processed, test scores, and interview process.

      Lol is 32 the age people decide to be electricians? I'm 32 and have been trying to get onto an Apprenticeship. Went to a tech school for a year but it was crap and didn't learn anything because the teacher didn't even teach, everything was open book test you could use a phone for...

    I worked 13 years as a non-union electrician before I joined the IBEW in 2013. Being an IBEW member has allowed me to support a family of 4 on a single income and purchase a house within a short commute of any job I want to work. My only regret is not joining sooner. Thank you so much for putting this video together!

      I was already a journeyman electrician in Oregon when I joined. It’s as easy as walking in and saying you want to join. In Oregon and soon to be in Washington, you need to go through an apprenticeship to become a journeyman electrician. Trade schools won’t help you toward this, BUT, having gone though a trade school program should make you a better candidate if you apply for the apprenticeship. It is super competitive, so anything that helps is good. I’m sorry they misled you, it’s not uncommon from what I’ve heard.

      Im assuming youre female. The reason I say is you'll encounter guys that arent keen on women in the trade. Ignore them. Women can do this work. Ive always felt this way and ended up with crews that were mostly female on a couple huge jobs I was on as a result. Ye brute strength is nice but I teach work smarter not harder. Not all women are cut out for the trades but then again not all men are either. Being female is much harder non union as well. Hope you make JW.

    • @Weebwhacker
      @Weebwhacker 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tonythomas951 I been thinking of getting my little sister into this trades aswell. She likes what I do and the money I make but she worries she might not have the muscle needed for this and when I think about it it still is a construction field in the end. It would be nice for her to join a lucrative career out of high school rather than go though college with debt and no guarantee of making a decent living so I may have her hit the gym with me to muscle up and improve stamina to be prepared for it. Have you encountered times where lack of strength would hinder your work? What other struggles would a woman in the trades encounter?

    • @tonythomas951
      @tonythomas951 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Weebwhacker as a girl you just have to be a little smarter. Learn to use leverage and use things like hand trucks and carts. Work smarter not harder. Let the guys do stupid shit cuz they are too lazy to ahead. Most of my time in the trade was in service so I was by myself a lot and was forced to come up with ways to get it done alone. Just learn to think how can I make this easier.

    I just want to take the time to thank you for producing these videos. While I discovered your channel after I had applied for the IBEW apprenticeship the first time, your content kept me believing that I made the right decision. I applied for the first time in March 2019, found out in September 2019 that I did not make the cut. I then dedicated myself to rounding out my educational qualifications and reapplied in March 2020. Waited until November 2020 to have an interview scheduled, and then until April 2021 to be accepted! Finally, I found out a few weeks ago that I'm beginning my apprenticeship with the Safety & Orientation training on September 27th!
    So, again, thank you for all that you do to fly the flag of the IBEW.
    I can't wait to get started.

    I always try my best to respond as quickly as I can. Some comments are very quick and easy to respond to while others require a little bit more time. I always try to give well thought out responses, so sometimes the longer comments take a little bit longer for me to have a chance to respond to. Between this video, my 30 other videos, IG DM's, and being busy with life in general, sometimes this means that it will take some time before you hear back from me. I just ask for your patience and understanding in the meantime.

      @@MadElectrician man my career as a union electrician has been very hard it’s easy winding down and I have no regrets. Being from Texas working at petrochemical plants where every black and brown worker on the job were laborers! Not because these men and women didn’t want to be craftsmen but systemic racism. I got into the union because of a NAACP lawsuit on behalf of black and brown people. Many locals at one time had it written in their bylaws no Negros! Just like with climate change we have to evolve to reflect modern conditions or we will all parish. I was lucky because I spent my 5 years for 2 journeyman. Cleaveland Reed 3 yrs and Mark Cody 2 yrs when I topped out and passed the first state test. I was working with a shop Mark was the Superintendent. Compac Computer was just getting started. Many of the top level executives attended his church. We were invited to bid work but the contractor we worked for was shady. They asked Mark to start his own company and the rest was history. When we started working on that facility the had 3 buildings. I went from a first year journeyman to Superintendent in ten 10 years. Running a crew of about 120 guys and girls. Today it’s the corporate headquarters of HP. By the time I had left the company I had hired Cleveland Reed to replace my position in the field a I spent most of my time estimating in the office. Mar sold the Company and became a missionary work dried up in Houston. I remember the old timers telling me to head to Chicago so I did. I can say this Chicago is the most racist and segregated big city I have ever lived in.

    Non-union electrician of seven years who did his apprenticeship through the IEC here. I really regret not going the IBEW route. I was living in Northern Colorado at the time, and there wasn't much of a union presence there. I didn't want to commute to Denver for work and school, so I went non-union. I feel way behind in skill than union guys with the same amount of time on the job, and I'm just way underpaid compared to them. Fewer benefits too. I'm moving to SLC in a couple weeks. I just finished up college at SOU and moved to Portland so the IBEW 48 is looking pretty good to me. Best of luck finishing your apprenticeship and thanks for giving back to us through these videos!

      Most union apprenticeships will credit you for most if not all of your progress in your apprenticeship during your non union time. I know in my local they will give you 100% credit for your working hours and allow you to test out of years based on your knowledge and ability.

    Thanks for the info! I'm currently active duty Air Force as an aircraft electrician and I'm looking to switch over to being an actual electrician. Unfortunately, I'm serving overseas so it makes the process more difficult so I'll probably have to wait until I can get back stateside.

      First off, thank you for your service! 🇺🇸
      The IBEW really values our veterans and I think that you'll find that you'll have a competitive advantage when you do finally apply and go through the whole process. I hope that my channel can serve as a good resource for you!

    • @elijahbmet
      @elijahbmet 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I couldn't tell you much about how it would be in the Army, however, a lot of our work is troubleshooting/fixing electrical systems. We shoot wires, repair broken wires, and do preventative maintenance. We also do things outside of electrical work like the air conditioning system, landing gear, and pressurization.

I’m worried that it will take a long long time to get into local 103 because I’m green. WJG will take my in anytime and I’ll go through their apprenticeship program. I’m thinking about doing WJG while applied for local 103, I’m just a little lost with those options if you can help clear some of that up please.
