He certainly sounds like he's been listening to Albert King
Hard to play a rhumba blues and not sound (at least a little) like Albert King.
It also sounds like Clapton in Cream
"That's what I've been doing all my life, it get it to feel good. Now I'm trying to make it sound good". That exactly describes my guitar journey. I spent so much time in the feel good space and not enough time is learning new techniques space.

John definitely knows about 'swamp blues' because during that video on YT that shows Dead and Co rehearsing Easy Wind. There's a moment where he describes the change in style (on a chord change) as 'swamp'.

Of course I’m not accusing you of being an Albert Collins knock off because obviously you have been influenced by a number of cats but that seemed like something you got excited about Because like Albert Collins or any of the greats that motif was timeless. Although I feel like I’ve heard it, I’m pretty sure I have not. I’ve been screwing around with that motif all night and coming up with some cool thematic development off of what you came up with. I apologize but I have to incorporate that little gem into my improvisation ( or ripoffisation). It’s just too much fun.
